Effan noticed that in the iMate ROM 1.72 it was creating 3 dlls in the TEMP directory; and he build a new CAB to move them to the \Windows directory, you can read about it here (towards the bottom)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/vie...ys=0&postorder=asc&highlight=hsdcard&start=50
My question is; does anyone know what these are? Were they supposed to go into the \Windows directory, did it make a difference to anyone who has moved them? Have any of the people suffering from Hard Resets tried to use these files? I just did the 1.72 Rom update and in 20 minutes it already hard reset itself… (hoping these help...)

I have been reading lots of posts on the forum and got so far but now I'm stuck.
I have an XDAII and have managed to unlock and unhide the extended rom. now I can access the extended rom while XDAII is in the cradle.
I understand how I can add cab files to it and will be using the configcreator tool to edit the config.txt file.
The problem I have is; all the pockekpc software I have, is on my computer and I have only ever installed it through activesync the normal or official way. When ever I have tried to put the files directly on my phone and click on them I always get the messeage this is not a valid pocket pc application..... or something like that.
So how do I convert the software files I have on my computer to cab files so I can include them in the extended rom? ? :?:
To most of you guys this must seem like a nuby question sorry  , but I can't seem to find the answer on the forum.....
Is there a tool I can use or a program that I can use to make useable cab files?
Also just a though when I install programs via activesync does my computer convert the files to cabfiles and then automatically transfer them to my device? if so can I somehow copy the cabfiles from the temporary location on my computer :?:
A step by step guide would be helpfull but any help would be appreciated :?
Thanks in advance
Daz
Some 'high-end' software will leave a copy of their cab files on a specific directory (i.e. you have a choice of choosing). Those you can just go to the directory and copy it. If you do not know what I'm talking here, nevermind
Anyway, for normal simple software, they will most probably extract themselves to temporary directory. Example
C:\Documents and Settings\'yourWindowsUserName'\Local Settings\Temp\
where 'yourWindowsUserName' is your username for the PC. My guess would be, try to search for *.cab files in your temp directory (i.e. as the above dir) before you install your software. THEN, start your software installation, and do a search again on the 1st setup screen, see if you are lucky And try to do another search after you're done with the setup.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for that I'll have a go.

I managed to edit my extended rom! 8)
I was able to add the cab files from tom tom navigator 3 and it installs them perfectly after a hard reset!
The only issue I have, when I run Tom tom for the first time after a hard reset I have to keep entering the activation code. Not really a major issue more of a pain.
Wonder if anyone knows how to get it to enter the activation code automatically :?: Bat file or something :?:
This sites really helped me with my tinkering I think its about time to donate
Thanks for all the help guys

Hi :
Here after what I do with succes :
When installing the application from ActSync, you must select "Storage Card" instead deffault location to install.
Then, you have to cancel the installation process before the progress bar on your PPC's screen ends.
A dialog box will ask if you're sure to abort the process.
At this stage, you go to storage card throught your PC Explorer, and you'll find the cab file there.
You save it away.
This cab file on the storaqe card will be automatically removed when you confirm that you really want cancel the installation process on the PPC's screen.
Or...
Go to c:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync folder in your desktop and you can find there more cabs. Or simply find all the *.cab files on your HDD and you'll be surprised.
Thanks for this I will check out both methods
Does anyone know what the best freeware tool for modifying the cabfile is? and where I can download it :?:
Thanks for the help

I think, that everyone here knows only WinCE Cab Manager from OCP Software. But this is commercial,but...on internet is everything...
I made a mistake, a big, BIG mistake. I tried to upgrade from WM2003 to WM5, flashed the ROM no trouble, then gulp, no utilities at all. Tried to restore the original WM2003 ROM image I had made and bang, dead.
Eventually managed to load a fresh copy of WM2003 but now I have lost all the extras, like sim manager, camera etc.
I am finding the utilities slowly, but cannot get the camera to work again even though I have the .CAB file Camera_2.21b18157.sa installed. All I get is the following error message
Cannot find 'Camera' (or one of its components).
Make sure the path and file names are correct and
all the required libraries are available.
If anybody could help me out here I sure would be appreciable
After much looking around I found out why the camera wasnt working, the cab file I needed was still there, but the config file in ExRom was not listing it at all CAB: \Extended_ROM\CameraRC132_WWE_1.5.sa.CAB because of this the camera simply could not find the required CAB file with which to operate itself.
Problem solved after using the ExRom unlocking tool found in the ftp files, a swift rewrite of the config file to add the needed CAB and away we go
I feel like a total IDIOT !!!
I was messing around with my TyTn trying to unlock the ext rom.....
I installed fit4cat 1.0 checked it out...didn't do anything with it.
My TyTn started acting a little strange..so I did a hard reset.
When it reboot during the customization process it tells me:
\Extended_ROM\MT_ShortcutMMS-Hermes.CAB does not exist.....
then it freezes!!!!!
What did I do !!! I'm a fool!
Can someone help me out?
I just want to reset it and get the ext rom installed..
btw..i have bootloader 1.14
ok...i kind of got things going again.....!
I still get the message about the missing .cab file!!
I can now access the ext rom folder.....now the question is how do I instal .cab files for the ext rom?
I downloaded the appropriate ext rom version for my device and it contains a bunch of .cab files, one of them being the missing file
How do I get it in there...do I simply instal it like a standrd .cab file?
Does it need to be installed in the ext rom ?
hahaha your not the only one... what you need to do is visit the wiki here and download the appropriate ExtROM for your device and... use fid4cat to unhide and unlock the EtxROM and simpy copy the missing file back there... re lock the ROM using fid4cat and hard reset it....

ok.....where do you copy the missing files? at the root level of the ExtRom folder?
There's other folders in there:
Program Files
WMDRM
I don't see any other .cab files in the ExtRom folder of my device...is that normal? Should I copy all the ExtRom file I downloaded since I have none in the device ExtRom folder?
if you can see the extrom and there are no cab files inside it then you have somehow formatted your EtxROM, you need to copy all files from the relevant downloaded ExtROM onto your PDA in the ExtROM folder and relock the etxROM

Hi,
I have two similar problems that I think stem from something in the OS that prevents a normal user (without a hack) from deleting ANY FILES from the Windows folder (is this because it is in the ROM?).
1. I want to delete the WMA file that produces the stupid tiger roar when the Cingular 8525 is soft reset. Very annoying in the middle of a meeting! I found the WMA file, but I am not allowed to delete it.
2. I stupidly moved some fonts from Windows XP into my Font folder on the 8525 that turned out not to work right, and now I want to delete them and can't.
Is there a hack that allows the user to over-ride whatever safety feature brings up the "Cannot delete____________: There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination may in in use" when you try to delete something from the fonts file?
Thanks so much for any help!!
you can't delete it, but it can be overwritten.
Over-writing files in Windows Folder
Thanks Olipro. I would be happy to over-write the annoying growling sound that happens at every soft reboot. How would I do that?
try the wiki instead...
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Registry
and look for this title...
Disable/change the startup animation or sound
Thanks-resolved!
Thanks Shogun Mark,
I did the hacks and over-wrote the unneeded files and I'm in great shape. Got some additional help on some other hacks too from the forum you recommended. Problems solved.

I was wondering if someone would share some information about low level modification of the rom kitchens. I have been working with Dog Guys kitchen and an original rom image and i have done some extensive modifications. Unfortunately, it is really just a cluged mess. The problem is that I don't know how to modify the underlying registry keys.
NOTE: I am not talking about *.rgu files in OEM packages and I am not talking about boot.rgu.
I am talking about the registry keys associated with the version of the compact framework built into the rom. Or the registry entries that define what applications are initially set on the program menu. Or the keys with the various application that are installed in the rom by default.
I have done a great deal of searching and I clearly don't know what the key words are to find this information. It must exist because both DCD and No2chem were able to either find it or derive it. I am just hoping someone will point me in a direction where I might be able to learn the next stage of rom customization beyond simply adding different OEM packages.
Thanks
most of the programs have their own folders. In each folder there is .rgu file. that file contains registery entries for that program.
in oem folder there are folders oemapps and operator. those folders contain more than one programs in one folder. all the registry entries that are related to all those programs are in one single rgu file in those folder. There are some registry entries in .provxml files as well.
when one file contains registry entries for more than one program, most of the entries that belong to a single program will be next to each other ( not always true )

Could you tell me where the registry information is for the contents of the SYS directory. for example where are the registry entries for SYS/NET. there isn't a corresponding .rgu file.
thanks.
sys folder has lots of other subfolders .. they have their rgu files.
There are some programs in bin format. they are already encoded i think.
You can put registry entries in a cab and put it in extened rom .. and run it after hardreset .. that way it will overwrite the original keys.
atomclock, I found this old thread concerning a solution and troubles with cooking .net CF 3.5 into a ROM:

Thats funny... That is the oem package I'm using in my rom.
There seems to be three possible avenues to work this issue.
1. Build oem's and hope that the registry keys in the oem's .rgu file COMPLETELY overwrite the original entries. (Oemizer is a good tool for this http://tiermann.net/index.php?optio...d=3:personal-oemizer&catid=1:Desktop&Itemid=3 )
2. Review the registry after a rom is written and create an xml file that will overwrite and delete all unnecessary registry keys (here is a link for anyone interested http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=366337&highlight=kitchen )
3. Get the inside information as to where the registry keys are actually located and make changes at the source instead of trying to patch it after the fact. (If someone has a link for this information please provide)
Why is it so impossible to get the necessary information to proceed with option 3.
I want to port the drivers from the current official rom to an old wm5 kitchen. I really need to get access to the underlying workings.
NOTE: I already know how to proceed with options 1 and 2. I need the information for number 3.
If you can answer the following question then you have the information I want.
Where are the registry entries for the BUILT IN .net framework (/SYS/NET)?
Thanks
