2G GSM/GPRS Radio measurement tool - P3Kit - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Hi, we made available a XDA/O2 GSM P3kit, which measures GSM/GPRS radio strength in real time.
pls try it out, http://www.mobilegx.com/ppc/p3kit/p3kit.html
It is tested on O2 PPC2000 edition, possibly works on XDAII, T-mobile as well.

Can't get a signal on my SX56-- Help

I bought a new SX56 from an ebayer and it appears to be unlocked etc. I put my current active Cingular SIM card in it but I get a no signal message after it searches for signal. The device came with xda-developers.com ROM version v1.2 on it. I have tried to switch to all of the different Bandswitch settings with no success. HELP PLEASE!!! ANYONE??!!
What's your RSU version ... you can get it from device info or displayed while booting.
PS: it's very risky to use the GSM menu this way. Check with your operator and select the right band once and for ever.
No signal on SX56
My device info is:
ROM ver: 3.17.03 ENG
ROM date? 05/15/03
Radio Version 6.12
Protocol version 324e4
Seems you have a bit old ROM and RSU ... you better check with one in your area but I see here some people have either TMO 4.01.00 + 6.24 or AT&T 30.09 + A30 and they are on Cingular. The right bandwidth setting is the key factor.
Thanks for your reply. I don't know how to do the updates you refer to. I hate to return the thing because I got a good deal on it, but if I can't use it on Cingular I don't know what else to do with it? Any help would be appreciated.
Doc
You can get the complete TMO update (ROM + RSU) here ftp://tmobile:[email protected]:21
Good luck ...
Hi,
I tried to link and get an error trying to connect. Could you please send it again :?: ? Do you think updating to windows 2003 would be if help? I can download it for free from the Siemens website. I just don't want it to lock the phone or cause any damage!
Doc
The official update from AT&T should be OK ... however, you device is better to be PW10B type (check the rear sticker) these upgrades were made for USA use.
Also, if you are in the Cingular 850Mhz only zone, you wont be able to catch signal, cause none of the RSU's will support this band.... (quite unfortunate for all of us in North America)
Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure of the Band mHz on Cingular. I will try to find out from them if I can. Guess I'm the die hard type but I still want it to work or I'll have to abandon it. Any other help will be appreciated

Quite unfortunate indeed. What are the chances that AT&T will release one in the future to make it compatible with Cingular 850 networks after the merger?
I still think there is a way to tune a digital device to another frequency. AT&T has a deal on these for $99.99 and it was just bought out by Cingular. It would be logical that Siemens has something in the mix an upgraded model, different freq. etc.

That's what I am thinking. I am a Cingular employee so I bought one to put on my ERP but I can only use AT&T and T-Mobile signals at the moment.
I am 100% certain that it is possible to get the device to work on 850, more than likely just restricted in the radio stack.
You are lucky!! I have six phones through Cingular and they have been trying to get me a Treo 600 since December!! I'd prefer a windows based device hence my reason for buying a SX56. I had no way to know it would not work on Cingular. All the ads I see for unlocked phones claim they will work on any GSM carrier with an active SIM card.
Obviously it doesn't work hence my involvement in all of this!!
Doc
It is possible that somebody has got cingular sim to work on 850, if they were in close proximity to a mast maybe the 50mhz wouldnt mean too much and a signal could be acquired, but you would still be using a phone detuned by 50mhz which isnt an ideal situation.
I'm not an expert but 50mhz is a pretty big difference in frequency. The splash over from 800 to 850 or 900 to 850 is pretty big. It probably would not work very well even a few feet away from the site where it functions. Still there has to be a way to to tune one of these to 850mhz.

re: the 850 tunning question, As far as I understand this is a hardware aspect of the radio, thus you can not tune to this freq. This is also the reason AT&T did not brand the XDA II, because HTC would not impliment 850 into the device. You are more likely to see a HP6300 or MPx in this department as they are both quadband phones (meaning 850 implimentation) the real question is, will either of these phones be EDGE enabled? My quess is the HP will but the MPx will not. Reasoning: Rumor was HP was using TI Ref design WANDA. TI make EDGE hardware for phones. TI processor may be in the HP phone. The bottom line is you will need new hardware for 850 or EDGE. Sorry for the bad news, I too would love to be proved wrong. Guess I'll have to pony the dough for one of these two new devices. I really loved my HTC device but if they aren't going to keep up...I have no choice. I still feel the XDA will be a better over all device, but without 850 & EDGE implimentation it's going to fall way short. It's nice to own a Corvet, but if a Honda goes faster...why buy the brand name.

I'm getting depressed. I bought this thing thinking it would just be a matter of sticking the SIM card in and off we go!! I've emailed 15 times, joined three different PDA/Phone forums and learned more about these damn things than I ever intended. Now I have a slow PDA, a car charger, extra case, extra sync/usb cable and it won't work on Cingular which I can't change!!!
HELP!!!
Wallaby from T-Mobile works fine with Cingular
Excuse me if I'm way off base, but I just moved over to Cingular from T-Mobile using an unlocked Wallaby, and it works fine. The only thing I haven't been able to do is to make a GPRS connection.

Problems with SX-56 rom, HELP !!!

hello.
i have the siemens SX-56 device and i did a rom burning of the special rom 1.2 from xda-developers.
the problem is that i have no reception.
something in the phone module got wrong.
i tried various bands, i tried different sims...but nothing.
i get zero reception and i cant make a call.
what to do?
have i been doing something wrong?
i tried to burn the 1.2 rom several times, but each time was the same.
PLEASE HELP
Thank you guys.
I also get no reception but I'm beginning to believe it's because I'm running Cingular and they run on th 850mhz band which the phone doesn't support
So I've now changed to the Special Addition ROM and the T-Mobile Radio Stack. When I go to the network selection within the phone tools, the only two that show are T-Mobile and AT&T. I'm running Cingular, but I was under the impression that I should be able to piggyback my coverage on T-Mobile coverage. For some reason, I still get no signal and when I try to tell it to connect to T-Mobile I get an error message.
bad upgrading!
Tried Flashing in T-Mobile ROM and the Radio Stack and it went through no problem. Still getting same issue. Could it just be the area I'm in, Syracuse NY that is.
Please help me too, i have the same problem...
does anyone here knows what to do?
Do NOT use the SX-56!!!!
I read alot of complaints about this ROM, its buggy!
You could try changing bands from the gsm bootloader menu.
Thank you for your reply,
i have already tried several bands from the bootloader.
is there a special way to change bands?
i chose the band i wanted, and right after that i did a SR.
is that right?
isnt there anyone here who could know whats going on? this is so bizzare.
Thank you

Cingular 1.34 ROM update UMTS issues

I wanted to know if anyone is experiencing similar issues.
I have a Hermes 100 O2 with a recently updated 1.34 Cingular ROM.
I also live in an EDGE area that borders a UMTS area.
What I've noticed is that whenever I transition from one area to the next (like in the car) I have had everything from lost calls, to bluetooth functionality dropping, to having the phone lock up and having to do a soft reset to get function restored.
Once I'm inside the area, the phone acts normal. It's just ANY transistion from UMTS to EDGE or visa versa is when I get this behavior.
I was on the Dopod 1.23 ROM previously and experienced none of this.
Anyone with ideas or similar experiences?
i downgraded to v1.31. on v1.34, when i use file explorer to look at files in storage card, it also freeze/lockup.
i believe v1.31 is more stable. also it' aku 2.6!
Interesting thought.
I know Sleuth255 is running 1.31. Maybe that's why.
I may go that way.
I am daily transitioning from EDGE to UMTS usingn 8525 ROM 1.34 and no problems
Are you in iddle mode or dedicated mode?
Are making a voice call or data ?
For voice it should work both ways unless the network parameters were not optimized in your area
For data it will work only from 3G to 2G with a slight interuption
if you are on EDGE and transitioning into UMTS it will not work. you will stay on EDGE though and no interuption

I was only referring to voice. Once per week I make a trip that starts in an Edge zone, enter a small 3G Zone, exit that zone back to Edge for about 15 miles then enter a 3G zone at the end of the trip.
The main thing I have noticed is that whatever zone I am in when I make the call, the phone usually works until the call is over. Then I have had everything from bluetooth drops to signal failure, once the entire phone locked up.
All of those scenarios result in me having to soft reset the phone.
On one occasion, I received a call while in the small 3G zone and upon leaving the zone, the phone dropped the call. In fact the person called me back 3 times and each call was dropped after about 2 minutes.
I'm not sure what to think at this point.
The fact that 3G Zone 1 is King of Prussia PA (Cingular PA headquarters) and the 2nd 3G zone is Philadelphia PA
has me thinking, they may still be trying out different things as these areas are 3G aware but not updated on the Cingular coverage map yet.
I had much better consistency on the Dopod 1.23 ROM. It never missed a call or dropped transitioning from one zone type to another.
Why don't you just set the phone to stay on the EDGE network and not switch to 3G? This should solve your problems. I do this often, though not for the reasons you discussed but to save battery life! I can't even get a full 12 hours on 3G these days in NYC!

I'm glad I'm not the only one with that problem. I got a full 7 hours this AM. I was using LogMeIn for 4 of them, but I was really surprised at how fast the battery drain was.
1. All 3G software devices including Hermes are still buggy and new releases are still coming. CW is focusing oh the LG CU500 for the launch with Video Share. service
2. The Cingular 3G network is going an optimization campaign which might last until January. Ericsson and Lucent patches to remedy some major issues are scheduled for the end of the year. The GSM/EDGE R99/HS two-way handover is not yet optimum.

Good Idea.
I guess the fact that it seemed to work better on an asian ROM than Cingular's own ticked me off a bit.
The clear thought is to force EDGE for the time being and see what develops with 3G around here in the near future.
I also saw this, especially the call dropping and then each following call also dropping - all this when I often had excellent coverage. I haven't tried Cingular's ROM though.
EDIT: I tried the Cingular ROM and after about 15 mins (plus the amount of time to download the HTC ROM again) I am reloading HTC's 1.18 TyTN ROM. For some reason, my phone wouldn't stay connected to the network longer than about 30 seconds, then it would drop the connection and stay disconnected for minutes - sometimes I had to reboot to get my network back!
I hope HTC releases an update soon, and I hope Cingular gets their **** together and fixes transitioning between GSM and UTMS.

Cingular ROM downgrade error
Good morning, i have a Vodafone PDA1605 (TyTN etc.) I've updated the ROM with new Cingular version available on this site (1.34.502, bootloader 1.06), now I need to downgrade to older version with same CID (1.30.502, bootloader 1.04) but I receive an ERROR "Wrong Vendor ID" every time i retry to flash the ROM (following the procedure... restarting the update without disconnecting the PDA).
I've also tryed to put other ROM with bootloader 1.06 (new Vodafone FRA... i will upload when tested) but I receive the Error: "Wrong Model.."
Could someone help me?

To get around this issue, it seems like the consensus is to install the original ROM that came with your phone. Hopefully that will put your bootloader back at 1.04. (Your Vendor CID must match exactly when doing anything with 1.06)
Once you get it back to your original ROM, you should then be able to move up.
all of this is assuming your original ROM was a 1.04 BL
Hope this helps.
Is there an easy way to switch from GPRS to UMTS?
l3G3ND, I have the same problem as you but I don't have the Cingular Rom. I have the original Rom (including original radio Rom) that came on the HTC Tytn and I get same issue as you. Only difference that I don't have to soft reset.. I just have to turn the phone radio off and back on again in Comm Manager.
Just letting you know so you can see that perhaps it's not the Cingular Rom??

imei-check screwed me over. Help!

Since I had less than a day to prepare my 8525 before leaving for Australia, I figured I'd pay www.imei-check.co.uk for their unlocking service so I could use My Precious down under. I read through the unlock instructions on this site, but couldn't verify a single person who'd used them with an 8525 and was not willing/able to be the guinea pig.
After arriving in Oz and popping in a SIM from Telestial, I could not find a network at all. Yes, Network selection was set to Automatic. When I clicked 'Find Network' it just ground away on 'Searching...' for many minutes (sometimes almost an hour) before reporting 'No Network.'
So I tried manually selecting a Network but everything listed is *outside* of Australia. Frustrating.
So then I went to the following stores and tried SIMs from all three:
- Vodafone
- Telstra
- Optus
None of the salespeople's SIMs could find a signal.
So yesterday I sent an Email to imei-check.co.uk complaining that the unlock did not work and I get this Email back (verbatim):
"Hello,
you are not correct. After unlocking you can use ANY sim card. NO ROM flashing is required. What is the error message you get when you try a different SIM card? For us it just sounds like YOU set the phone for FIXED network selection and when you try different SIM card now it can not find your fixed network. So please correct this wrong setting from you in your phone settings:
Start->Settings->Phone->Networks, select Automatic, press "OK" and wait 1 minute."
Does anybody else find that seriously offensive? Are their average customers really that stupid?
FWIW, I even contacted Telestial and then they informed me that their SIM (to connect with the 'JUST' network, if anyone's ever heard of that) was incompatible with my phone. Incompatible with a quad-band GSM HTC phone? Come on...
I knew I was going to be bleeding edge, but I really feel like nobody's interested in helping with this stupid phone...
Hi mate,
Where abouts in Australia are you? If you're in Melbourne, I'm happy to give you a hand to (a) check that it is unlocked and (b) if its not unlocked, unlock it for you using pof's tools.
Cheers
Kev
Fixed!
Here's what the knuckle-dragger at imei-check should have known:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Registry
See the bit at the bottom about enabling the UMTS band tab.
what exactly is the issue than?
Cingular rom is perfectly compatible to Australian GSM and 3G networks. tested on Optus and Vodafone with great success. ROM tested: Cingular 1.31, 1.34.
Auto mode is just fine.

Thank you. Seems OK so far... How come this is only a GSM upgrade?
*EDIT* I don't notice any difference in reception between 1.50, 1.48, and 1.40.30... I'll have to see about battery differences.
Thanks pof

I believe it means that it is just radio? At least I got UMTS reception as well.
Testing it now, hope it's better than the 1.48 which caused me to lose several calls.

Please, can someone upload this to some rapidshare - there are many problems with FTP download on proxy in work. Thanks a lot!

Can't receive calls,
China mainland.
Here in the Netherlands this version is working perfect. Get nice HSDPA connection. Wifi is working with WPA security.
All calls come in, only not when HSDPA connection is active. Had this problem also with previous versions 1.47 and earlier.
Hope it's also working fine for you too....
Anyone in Toronto try this yet? Have been having problems with radio's after 1.43 and missed calls with Rogers. Hopefully 1.50 resolves this issue.
I will not be able to test this myself until late today and will post results once done.
Quick question: Anyone know the origin of this release? Did it come from a specific carrier, as most do?
Thanks.

Same thing here in Italy with TIM phone company.
I think that the HDSPA problem is not a radio software fault, if i try to call my Tytn while i am on an HDSPA session, the tone from the phone company is not "free" or "busy", it is the one they use when a number is wrong or the line is absent or broken.
I will check the battery usage too.

Silly question, If it is a GSM only upgrade, it wouldnt effect HDSPA?
