Hello, I am in the market for the XDA phone and from what I gathered, all the XDA's are the same except for ROMS. I am currently using a Treo 270 (ugh!) with T-Mobile and would like to upgrade. Here are my questions:
1. Can I buy any XDA (1900MHz) on eBay and flash it for T-Mobile service? For example, I perfer AT&T silver phone over the gold tone T-Mobile's PPC phone.
2. Which ROM upgrade do you recommend? I would like latest and greatest but stability for me is much more important? Should I move to PPC2003 ROM?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated and I have been reading many of the previous helpful posts. Thanks!

I have done exactly as you suggest. I was an ATTWS customer with existing ATT XDA. It takes a couple of steps... I:
1. Backed up my existing ROM on an SD card
2. Cooked a version 3 ROM on Jeff's Kitchen with no included software, I just did it to unlock the phone. (worked)
3. Cooked a 4.00.11 ENG ROM with all the goodies I wanted.
4. Popped in my T-Mobile SIM
5. Created GPRS connection settings for both ATTWS and T-Mobile
I am sooooo happy I can't stand it. Except for some conflict with "Battery Pack" software utility, I have found 4.00.11 to be rock solid, and I can now easily switch from ATT to T-Mo on a whim. (If you can call the physical wrestling with the SIM in an XDA easy). I am still running the most recent ATT radio stack with no problems on T-Mobile. (A.20.10)
BTW, I used the .exe method of flashing my PDA for both steps 2 and 3 via my USB cradle. No problems.
Thanks Mad Max for all the helpful tips!
Is XDA-Dev tools all I need to backup and reflash?
Thanks a billion! I am so excited!
Not sure which question you're asking:
a. Do you need XDA-dev tools to be able to create and restore the image on the SD; or
b. Do you need XDA-dev tools to be able to take the saved image and move it off the SD onto your computer for safekeeping.
If (a), then no, the built-in bootloader function of the XDA has the ability to write ROM inage backups to/from an SD card, but note that doing this overwrites any data on the card.
If (b), I'm the wrong guy to ask. Now that my original ROM image is on that SD, the SD is sitting at home on my desk, I never took the time to write that data onto my PC because I don't need the card right now.
Please remember that there is a slight risk that you will incapacitate your XDA. If you corrupt the ROM to the extent that it cannot bring up a serial connection to your PC AND the bootloader becomes corrupted as well, you may have a handsome coaster for your coffee table. I've never had any problem (and most here haven't) but please understand there is a slight risk.
Thanks again, Mad Max
Mad Max, I read in another post that you are using the stock AT&T's A20 stack, any reason why you didn't move on to T-Mobile's stack?
I am now waiting for my new AT&T Siemens SX56 that I purchased from ebay. Is there anything I need to do with an AT&T phone or can I simply put in my T-Mobile's sim card?
Many thanks!

When I go back and forth between SIMs, it works, so I thought "why mess with a good thing?" but really it's more just laziness on my part. GSM and GPRS seem to work just fine on both carriers, and the only side effect seems to be that while on T-Mobile, my signal meter reads lower than it ought to when I compare it to another t-mobile phone at the same location. I do plan to drop a new T-Mobile RSU phone, I'm curious if anyone knows of an easy way to do that by .exe, since I don't have an SD card reader or serial cable handy. (Again, at the cost for either, I don't have a good excuse for not having both.)

No, just have to unlock the phone (per my previous post on this thread) which I did by temporarily installing the kitchen's 3.17 ROM, and either stick with 3.17 or rev up to 4.00.11 ENG (my recommendation). The only settings you have to put in that aren't already in the SIM are the GPRS setttings for T-Mobile, which I can post if you need them.
For quick ref, kitchen is at
http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/ROMkitchen/
MadMax, I can't thank you enough. I 'cooked' up a 3.17 rom with no autoconfig data, no software except XDAunlock and made this as an .exe install file.
Please correct me if I am wrong... I am assuming this is all I need to flash the rom with the unlock program.

That's pretty much it... The EXE you have is the full installer, not just the ROM image. If you open that EXE with WinZIP (I'm old fashioned, I just do it myself rather than running it) you'll see all the goodies--the ROM image, and various install programs. Extract the whole archive to a folder, then in that folder run start.bat. It's all on auto pilot from there, it's really amazing how easy the XDA gang and Jeff have made all this.
When it's done, (make sure the XDA screen says it's complete!) remove the XDA from the cradle, and do a HARD reset. When it comes up, it will say that a locked SIM was detected right away. Click the OK to unlock, and you are done with 3.17. Right back in the cradle, and repeat the whole thing with the desired ROM image.
I've had great results using the EXE method. Others here will probably advise towards SD flashing, but I've had no problems. All teh caveats apply though, so be carefull not to lett either device's power or the connection get interrupted.
MadMax, things are looking GREAT. I got my unit this morning and I immediately unlocked the unit as you instructed. I then decided to move on to 4.0.16 since I am using T-Mobile. Everything works great but my RSU is at 4.12. I am trying to upgrade to A20 or whatever T-Mobile's latest RSU is. Constant GPRS is neat, but reception is more important to me.
I just ran back from CompUSA and purchased a 256 SD card. I'm now lost and can't find step-by-step instructions on RSU updates. Can you point me to the right direction? TIA.

Nevermind, I got it working! I found a posting from mdavidm. I needed to move 4 files over to the device and run the stack upgrade manually. Worked like a charm! Thanks again.
Now, I am curious if I can upgrade from A.20.10 to T-mobile's latest stack. I was thinking if reception would be better if I use T-Mobile's. Any suggestions/ideas? Thanks!
Guys- I took my phone to be unlocked from a wee shop in Edinburgh and they failed, leaving the XDA useless. I beleive the software version i had on it prevented unlocking. (i had downloaded upgraded software and radio pack off the 02 website about 2 months ago)
Do any of you know what I can do- I need to get it up and working again and then put a vodofone sim card in it..
many thanks in advance from a frustrated scotsman..
Can you explain what you mean by "leaving the xda useless"?
Hi- it wouldn't boot up, however since my first messagem the operating system is back! It still leaves the problem of how to unlock it...Any ideas
Thanks -Stew
Which radio stack are you using?
You can try downloading xdaunlock.exe, copy it your xda, this file has to be dragged/dropped to xda or cut/pasted to xda, do NOT execute the file on the pc, it needs executing on xda, just explore your xda to the place you copied the file to and double tap. The other option is to use a serial cable and download the xda manipulator program and run that on your pc with your xda in bootloader mode while connected by serial cable. The other option is to download the developers rom 1.2, that will unlock your phone automatically. You would be advised to backup your existing rom to sd card then you can go back to that if you decide not to keep the 1.2 rom. The sd backup will also come in handy if you cook a rom in the kitchen and decide you dont want it, I keep a 64 meg sd card for just that purpose.
I also suggest you have a good look around the forum and become aware of problems that may arise and solutions that may be available, there is a mine of information here thanks to the guys that run the forum and their dedication to the task.
Thank you for taking the time to reply
How do I find out which radio stack i am using?
Re the radio stack-I downloaded an upgraded version from the 02 website a few months ago if that gives you a clue..
thanks again
Stew
Go to start/settings/system/device information.
Cheers- as you can tell I am not as technically gifted as some of you guys but I learn quick.
Will check out what version it is when I get home and let you know.

Is this (WM2k5_1.50g_XDA2_HIMALAYA.rar) newer then this
(WM2k5_XDA2_HIMALAYA_O2_FullRAM)
getting confuse.
I have a few question, please advise me.
1. extracted either files, and found that there is no (ms_) and (Radio_)
is this normal ?
2. i saw Radio 1.7.
Do i need to put Radio 1.7 together with NK.nbf and HimaUpgradeUt.
3. As for Protocol
Do i need to grab from the WM2003SE upgrade files?
I have read Wiki, but it did not mention about Radio 1.7 and Protocol
please guide me.

WM2k5_1.50g_XDA2_HIMALAYA.rar
to my knowledge g could be newer than f the one in the full ram version, so this potantially could be newer, as for the files ms & radio they have to be in the same folder as NK, regarding the protocol i have no idea what do you mean so please explain further
Basically, i am trying to claify by comparing WM2003SE files.
You see, when you extract WM2003SE, you will see 3 files (MS, NK and radio) right?
And in WM2005, you only see 1 (NK).
So, by my understanding, there is no Radio, and MS(in this case, this is protocol) in WM2005
Does it means that do i need to copy Radio 1.7 FTP: xda:xda and (MS) from WM2003SE into WM2005 folder?
pardon my english.
i see the screenshot for WM2005, and it has the radio 1.7 and protocol 1337.38
this really confusing me
Also reading the upgrading procedure. is just use patch 1, patching the NK files
then use ERedit and change the operator
this leads me that this file is only for OS.
So, as for radio and protocol (here i means , MS and radio), it is copy individual from different files and place it into the folder WM2005(here i mean going to upgrade)
thanks
by the way, this file WM2k5_1.50g_XDA2_HIMALAYA.rar is only 6.08MB, which is smaller then WM2k5_XDA2_HIMALAYA_O2_FullRAM (23MB)
Huh, I downloaded it and my rar file was 23695Kb, the extracted NK.nbf was 32769Kb.
I need my device at the moment so I dare not risk the upgrade at the moment. If anyone has performed the upgrade please post a line if it was successful.
cheers
hey guys,
there is nothing wrong with it...
i just uploaded it onto ftp. so if you have downloaded something smaller than usual size, you did the download before it was completely uploaded...
And yes, it is the newest version....

I'm still waiting to see an improvement. Even with the slightly newer kernel I still see my battery dropping approx 1% per hour. Maybe that's OK, but with my radio, BT, and IR off I think it should do better than a 25% / day drop. If my radio was on, for 8-12 hours then 25% (maybe 40%) makes sense. I do notice that ActiveSync seems to load itself periodically (which I never saw using WM2K3SE), and I assume my serial port is being energized whenever AS loads. This could account for the power drop, but I'm still observing it. I haven't seen anything I could point to as an improvement.
I was hoping to see an improved video camera and working SMSs...
Oh well, I'm willing to wait whatever time necessary for better and better releases of BuzzMobile5.0
WoW another version from Buzz.... Buzz can u please whats the diff between the old and the new pls..
i've upgrade my xda with 1.50g, it works just great, with more stability on my device, but still with the minor bug (camera, and record button). i can see the program memory is bigger than the 1.50f, so i can open the 3mb excel file freely. now i can use the wisbar advance 2 without a bug, i think....
gadz, or anybody else with WM5, have you tried Wisbar 2.10.0.29 ? When I tried to run it, it would lock up until I renamed lrgwesex.dll. I'm also experience small graphic hic-ups, is anyone else?

Is there anybody that can point me to a simple upgrade overview or simply outline what the options and the benefits are and what is involved please .Blimey guys we all have to start somewhere !....
I have over the past week spent something in the order of 5 hours trawling hundreds of threads and thousands of posts trying to find a basic intro setup and upgrade overview for the 02 Himalayer without success.
I have found hundreds of dead links and even more obscure threads with suggested upgrade files that either don't work properly or are incomplete or brick the XDA
I am new to the 02 XDA ll and cannot find anything comparable with such a large screen. ?
therefore I would like to make some basic improvements if it is possible without risking corrupting the Rom or bricking the XDA as I do not have the technical expertise to sort out the resultant problems.
this is the spec I have
02 XDAll
2Gb SD card
Rom 1.72.00WWE
Date03/15/04
Radio 1.17.04
ext Rom 1.72.18.1
Ram 128Mb
Model PH10B
I would like to be able to have a large analougue or digital clock on the start or active screen like the touch .
I'd like to be able to customise the start screen and remove some rubbish.
is there any chance of installing some large icons ? like the Diamond/Touch et al as it would be useful to be able to operate it without needing glasses all the time.
Photo editing thumbnail gallery software like Picassa or similar ?
I'd be very interested in other owners mods they have carried out to simply improve and update their XDA and make the day to day operation easier or any suggestions at an alternative with a 3.5"screen
Any help or advice would be much appreciated as I don't think I could face another 5 hours searching phew
well does anyone know of any other XDA with 3.5" screen at least? one that has a better spec than a XDA ll ?

thank you Rudegar but that means absolutely nothing to me I'm afraid.I assume that I can access this readme file through file explorer yes ?
What would flashing the Rom achieve for me ? what would I flash it with and why would I do that ?This forum is littered with hundreds of flashing problems
I don't mean to be disrespectful but your answer is not exactly helpful is it?
ok I've found the reason why no one wants to help .Its here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45
This forum is full of people with problems that 5 minutes of searching will find a solution for, this is one such but as it is sunny outside, first time for far too long, i will indulge you a wee bit.
If you download a ROM for any PPC what you will get will be a ZIP file. In that ZIP file will be three or more files, one will be the new ROM, one will be the program to flash that ROM to your PPC and the third will be a readme.txt file detailing how you actually achieve that. There may be other files in the ZIP or there may not. The readme.txt can be read by Notepad on your PC.
The basic process to upgrade is this:
1 - Download and unzip the ROM
2 - Place the PPC in bootloader mode, follow the instructions in the readme to do just that
3 - Run the upgrade utility to transfer the new ROM
4 - Have a cuppa while step 3 completes, anythig from 10-30 minutes.
5 - Reset the PPC and enjoy the new ROM
Hi all i'm newbie on ppc,i wanna upgrade my o2 mini II,my device info, rom version 1.03.00 WWE,rom date 11/1/04,radio version 1.01.00,protocol version 1337.38,extrom ver 1.03.166 WWE any suggestion?

I am sure some of you are going to read this and shake your head but I need to know what is the whole purpose of updating your ROM on your phone. I currently have a US Cellular PPC 6800 and US Cellular never has anything on their site for new and cool things for their phones. I would like to update the phone to Windows 6.1 not for any particular reason just to say I did it. Is their certain features on this phone that I am missing out on because I have a stock ROM? By upgrading my ROM what features will I be able to get or do?
Thanks for your answers.
speed, speed, more speed, memory tweaks, battery tweaks
Really. I like that. I will start reading threads and getting a better understanding of this whole ROM upgrade. Any particular ROM that someone can suggest so I can read more on it. Anyone have any good words of wisdom on things to do or avoid?
what do you like in your roms? with programs? or barebones?
See that is what I need to learn yet. The differences in the ROM's. But I would have to say I like programs.
then r4r reloaded is the way to go by scrosler or bitserve. to unlock use nuespl
I see that nueSPL-2.47 is the latest version and I assume that would be the version I would use. it says "DO NOT USE with a NON GPS RADIO (2.xx). Only use with GPS RADIOS (3.xx). A version check will be added soon." How can I verify this?
What is the actual purpose of the nueSPL?
I don't mind getting my hands dirty and doing some reading but I am very new to the whole world of upgrading my phone. The fear is if I do something wrong then I have a very expensive piece of junk. I have worked on UNIX machines for the last 15 years so if this was a computer no problems but like I said earlier I know nothing about phones.
Thanks for your help
have you decided on a rom? kitchen or RUU file? let me know which one, then, ill help you unlock and install your rom
I am still researching the best one, or the one I think I would like to try. Thanks for your help and I will get back to you when I think I fully understand.
ok, this is what I believe to be true. a ROM and RUU are pretty much the same and a kitchen allows you to pick and choose which apps you want to install. What I am looking for is a way to allow me to have more features for the phone (ie. turn on GPS and upgrade to WM6.1) but yet also have some of the same programs I use all the time or be able to install the programs I use ( Office, Opera, Calendar, ) Things like that. Since you have way more knowledge on this then I do, with what I mentioned what would you suggest?

You will also need an updated radio, I recommend 3.42.40 or 3.42.50.
You have to do SPL first, then radio, then rom.

ill help you with the installation because its quite simple
once you get it unlock
rename your rom (ruu_signed.nbh) to TITAimg.nbh
copy TITAimg.nbh to storage card (using whatever activesync or card reader)
put phone in tri-color screen (in case you dont know it's power+camera+reset hold for 2 seconds)
that will install your rom.
the steps for upgrading the radio are the same:
delete previous titaimg.nbh file and replace it with your radio (titaimg.nbh) file
tricolor screen
done
