I'm a little unclear on your setup, but I'll ask some questions here. Is your computer connected to your Exchange server on the LAN? Your computer has to have access to the Exchange serverand Outlook configured for the server for it to work. I don't know how well it works over a VPN, but I'd imagine it'd probably work, if that's what you're using. If you're trying to do it over a general internet connection without a VPN, it definitely won't work.
Thanks surrealmonk
Iam trying this from my home pc which is connected to net by dialup so its not in LAN.But i check my emails and conacts by webmail from my home.
I have tried sucessfully by GPRS to sync to exchange server its ok,but my question is why to use GPRS when i have internet at home pc where pocket pc is docked with this i need to sync my all conacts & calendar mails to exchange server.

hi there
is there any way to syncronize my XDA over the internet?
can you tell me the steps for that
thanks in advance for your help
I'm assuming that you need to sync with a Exchange server?
It's not quite so easy, basically you have to install an enterprise software component call Microsoft Mobile Information server, this is a chargable option (quite expensive).
It acts like a proxy gateway between your PocketPC and the Exchange server. Your company may already have one setup, i doubt it.
http://www.microsoft.com/miserver/
If by chance all you need to sync is POP/IMAP & Avantgo, then you can do this by simply;
1 - Setup the POP / IMAP service in you "inbox", then when you are connected just hit the sync button
2 - When in avantgo (in IE) just click on Tools down the bottom, then hit "Modem Sync" whilst connected, this will updated all your AvantGo stuff.
Cheers
Is it possible to sync using activesync over the internet without running an exchange server? I'd like to be able to sync my XDA while I'm out and about to my PC at home.
 :?: :?:
been trying to do the same for ages , but never found out how to do it
It can be done, under a few conditions:
1. You need to have a static IP address for you PC
2. You need to install Pocket Hosts or a similar free utility to map the WINS host name to your PC's IP address.
3. Your carrier / ISP must not have a firewall that blocks ports 5678 or 5679 (T-mobile seems to block this)
Remote active sync was designed with a local area network in mind and it is configured to connect to you computer by using the WINS name and not using an internet based DNS name. When you connect over an internet connection from your XDA, it is not able to find you PC.
If you install a free utility such as Pocket Hosts (http://zimac.de/cestuff.htm) you can configure the Pocket PC to be able to find you PC. This utility will allow you to configure you Pocket PC to map your PC Name to an IP address (similar to the HOST file on a Windows based PC)
Before I had the unlimited GPRS plan, I created a dial up connection to an ISP on my PocketPC Phone and it works perfectly. However, when I try the same thing over the GPRS connection, it does not work. From my end, it looks like T-Mobile blocks ports 5678 or 5679 on their firewall, which are the ports that remote active sync uses to complete the connection. (It looks like it is about to work, but then fails to complete the connection)
I have tried to convince t-mobile to fix this, but they keep claiming that it will not work out of the box, they don't know how to make it work, and they won't support it. They try to "upsell" me the sidekick or other device. I can't seem to get through to the right people. It seems crazy that a setting on their end blocks us from being able to sync over the air. After all, what is the point of a data connection if you are still restricted to using a cradle to sync. I understand that they don't want to support this and walk people through setting this up, but blocking the functionality seems pointless.
Anyone tested this on ATT? With number portability starting, I may have to explore other options. Anyone have an in at T-mobile that can get them to open up these ports on the firewall?
try www.yahoo.com
get an account (if you don't have one already)
login -- click on mail
the click the tab for addresses
on the next line to the right you will see the word "sync"
this will take you to download intellisync for yahoo
then follow instructions
sync you pda and your good to go, you will have your info on the internet and sync from anywhere
one more thing if youown a palm os and a pocket pc pda and you want to have both devices with same info (contacts, mail, notes etc. etc.)
the change the settings on your intellisync for your other device and resync
hope this helps it did for me...
Hi, I'm from the Philippines and my Network is SMART Communications. I tried synching with my active sync via GPRS but it seems it can't find my PC eventhough I used Pocket Hosts utility. It seems they block the port too. Anybody from Smart to please open the gate for us.
I've setup up my Win2k PC as dial-up server. And with the help of the Pocket Hosts utility, I can now be able to sync my Outlook over the air. But the call charges is killing me.

I've been investigating this myself too - and have to say T-Mobile's attitude is also alive and well here in the UK on O2 (via crapphone-whorehouse data support team).
I was actually shouted at by one of their 'tech' guys when I tried to persuade them that it could technically be done, but I needed to find out whether they were blocking the relevant ports. He eventually hung up on me! Fantastic service, eh!
I've been trying to get ActiveSync working over the Internet for the past few days and have finally managed to get it to work reliably. There are a couple of things that I have found...
Firstly, at least one of the ports required for ActiveSync does seem to be blocked when using GPRS (Vodadone UK in my case). Setting up a normal dial-up ISP connection results in first time connections to ActiveSync every time. It would be nice to know why there is problem over GPRS.
Secondly, my device was still connecting as Guest. Whilst reading through various other forums I found a fix that seem to work for this but it involves deleting a registry key. I wouldn't recommend it as I have know idea what else this key might be used for but it certainly solved the problem for me. The key I removed is HKLM/Ident/Username value is guest. The key is replaced automatically at some point (maybe after a reset) so if it stops working, you have to go and delete it again! There must be a better way....
That's great information, thanks.
I now have my device remote synching!
Just to summarise my steps to get things working on my XDA II:
1) XDA: Set up new work connection (don't you just hate the organisation of conenctions...) to a dial-up ISP over GSM, as O2 UK also block the ports required for activesync.
2) PC: Open sockets 990, 999, 5678, 5679 on my firewall
3) XDA: Use pockethosts to set up the IP address for my PC name
4) XDA: Change HKLM\Ident\User from guest to my normal PC logon user id
5) PC: Set allow network connections in activesync
6) XDA: Manually Connect to the ISP connection
7) XDA: Open activesync and click synch - away we go!
As an update to this, I had to do a full restore at the weekend after loosing all my data on the XDAII. The problem was not related to these changes but it made me look again at the Ident key. There are two keys normally like...
HKLM/Ident/Name Value<Your chosen PDA Name>
HKLM/Ident/OrigName Value<Pocket_PC>
This time I changed only HKLM/Ident/OrigName to the same value as in HKLM/Ident/Name and it connected first time. Also, this value does not seem to be reset unless you do a hard reset on the device. This may be better than changing the Username value though I have yet to try either on another computer where my preferred connection should actually be as a Guest.
Got it working
Thanks to andyclap's suggestions I finally got it working. It looks like T-mobile does not block any ports, but without the registry hack the error I got was the same as when I tested this over a dial up connection and blocked the ports on my firewall.
The other change since my last post is that I am using WM2003 and it requires you to set up a VPN connection to the PC instead of just using PocketHosts for the name resolution.
When connecting to PC the wcwscomm.exe process sometimes leaves a port open to my POP3 server holding my email server hostage. The only way to allow Outlook, or other email programs access is to kill the process, or take the phone out of the cradle. Anybody know how to get ActiveSync to let go of the POP3 when done with it?
I have a att 8525 with wm6. My pc has windows xp home edition service pack 2 2002 edition. When I connect phone via cradle upon reboot of the pc I get a message new hardware found it then tries to sync. After this attempt I get a message device not detected so I do the troubleshoot after the trouble shoot it comes up with 2 issues one which really confuses me. I downloaded activesync version 4.5 but here is the message I get below
1 To synchronize email etc with your PC Microsoft Outlook XP or later must be installed
2 Unable to establish a connection between pc an my device. It then gives a link to a guide for this with all sorts of changes to make on the phone etc. I have performed a great deal of them changes enabling and disabling settings they ask for etc but this has not resulted in any change or a connection
My biggest question concerns the first issue mssage I get. 1 unable to synchroniz with my pc because it seems to says Microsoft Outlook Xp or later must be installed. When i went to install the activ sync my windows xp home edition was listed as compatible. So I am very confused here. Do I need to upgrade to the outlook 2007 ( More Money damn ) or is there another way perhaps a lower version software or am I missing something. If it matters i am connected via wifi wireless router which I just installed Any Help will be greatly appreciated, greatly

I couldn't sync after I did my first ROM upgrade and it was an official upgrade from AT&T, thats how I found this place. I would suggest reading through the Hermes WIKI, then looking through the Hermes section, it was a REALLY BIG help to me. Now on to your questions:
You have to have MS Activsync installed on th PC, I would try finding v4.2 as I have been having problems with v4.5 and 4.2 fixed it.
Are you trying to sync with the USB or just with the WiFi connection???? I don't think you can sync via WiFi or Bluetooth.
You only need Outlook 2007 if you use it as your E-mail client (I don't use MS Outlook or MS internet explorer).
Sync Solution!!
I had the same problem. I tried on my 3 pcs & figured out. USB connection is the best for all connection & sync.
Microsoft Outlook XP or later is must to sunc contacts & e-mail. if you dont have those & have Outlook Express you need a program (I forgot the name) to install in your computer & cab in DPA which sync contacts with Outlook Express.
i did following.
For sync connection make sure you have all security disable or you allow main 4 files to communicate. check this troubleshoot for help on allow files for different security programs.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx
once you see device detection click "Explore" on active sync even it is connecting the device..if you see the phone files it means it is connected but somehow not synchronizing.
then try to muck aroung advance USB connection tick & untick. and also connected via The Work & The Internet connections in connection settings.
Hope it helps.

This happens to me when I upgrade to a new ROM, and I am unable to resync via ActiveSync. The first thing I check and gets me back to be able to sync 99% of the time is the USB setting on the phone.
Go to->Settings->Connections->USB to PC->Then UNCHECK "enable advanced network functionality"
That always gets me back to be able to sync again via USB. Hope that helps...(a little late I know....)
Well. I love this thing. I see people *****ing about video play back quality and blah blah blah....but really, im amazed with this thing.
I have a couple of things i need to get worked out. Im a friggen power user with my devices and like to not only use everything, but have it working like it should.
First issue....
I have 2 web mail accounts set up in my phone. Gmail and yahoo. the Gmail account gives me my notifications of new mail, but the yahoo account doesn't. Ill get an email in my yahoo account, my phone gets it at some point but doesn't tell me it came, and it shows the message as read already. Any suggestions?
the second issue has proven to be a b#tch. I cant get bluetooth syncing via active sync on my bluetooth dongled pc working. Ive put alot of time trying to figure this one out and it is a pain. I dont know where the problem stems from.....my pc's bluetooth stack, active sync on the pc, active sync on my tp, or bluetooth config on the tp.
Please help.

Don't know waht the issue is with this. I knwo you can only have 1 active profile that shows email count on the tab, but if you go to the email screen on the right side should list all unread email for each account.

Active Sync doesn't support bluetooth connections last time i checked. Closest thing you'll probably be able to do is find out what COM port your bluetooth dongle is using, set active sync to use only that COM port under connection settings, pair, and try to sync, but i think its required to use the USB cable.

I can only get it to work on USB and it's only on the USB ports on the back of the tower.
I have never used a cable to sync my Pro. Been using bluetooth on my Gen 1 Dell XPS since day one. I do recall on my iPaq 4700, for some strange reason the first time I had to use a cable after that worked fine. Use your computer to search for services on a device (Pro), once it finds the services and you pair it you should not have any problems.
Well, since it is possible to have a BT sync I would first make sure you can connect the phone to the computer.
You'll need to turn BT on for the phone and set it to visible mode so the computer to see it. Then follow the steps. Of course make sure your computer's dongle is working.
If you get a BT link then mess with active sync settings. Particularly see if the 'allow advanced network..." box is checked on your phone. For me if I keep it checked it won't work over USB, but BT may be different. The best I can offer you is to experiment and google.
