doing the o2 upgrade  atm and boy am i nervous just thought i would let people know .
phew
Wow how tense was that but hey so far so good no problems downloaded the update from the o2 website and installed it as per the instructions and hey presto evrything is back to normal.
Upgrading a Himalaya / XDA-II is much less nerve-wrecking than upgrading (esp. the Radio Stack of) a Wallaby.
less nerve racking pah.........
Well for those of us who dont play with our firmware a simple upgrade can be the worst experience imaginable, and so much of a relief when it goes to plan, having read some of the horror stories here i am sure i am not alone in my concern but as some kind of reassurance to other noobs out there.............. this time was very painless. lol
oh well it was short lived........
Just discovered a problem it had to happen my Xda2 after the upgrade will not enter the MMS editor so not sure what to do now so if any techies out there have any suggestions would be glad to hear them.

If this is the same problem that I had while I upgraded my i-Mate last, it was a problem with one of the files in the 'xxxxx My Documents' area (have never figured which one).
I had to
o Rename the folder
o Do a hard reset
o Sync
o Copy only the files I needed into the new directory
There may be a smarter way, but, I can only tell you my experience.
Good luck,
Ian
Same issue, different resolution
Refused to do it the 'hard-reset' way, a bit of a turn it off and on again.
Found that the directory UAEContents was the culprit. Remove this from the 'My Documents' on the XDA II and MMS Composer now works.
But does it send anything (XDA and XDA pre upgrade issue)? Time will tell.
timshep you are a star
I am eternally greatful it works i just sent a mms and just waiting to see if it is recieved. one question didnt actually delete that directory (experience has taught me that lesson) just renamed it what does the directory do? OH and by the way did i say thanks lol
As a regular contributor to various motor car forums I am always amazed at how idiots destroy perfectly serviceable cars in an attempt to 'improve' them. Anyway - today, I am one of those idiots.
I recently purchased a QTEK 2020 which I got a bit cheap on account of it not having 'iMate' written on it. Before I get really into it and put software and stuff on it, I'd like to upgrade my ROM from 1.66 to 1.72, which I have found on this site. Do I have to go through all of the xda2nbftool stuff (which I more or less understand)? Presumably yes, to change the Operator (only?). I'm quite happy for the machine to think that it is an iMate, but presumably this does not work!
I am happy with my machine. It hasn't crashed yet. But it annoys me that it might not be quite as good as yours...
(I so feel like one of those people who wants to remove his cylinder head and replace it with pineapple's to make the engine run sweeter)
i dont really understand what you are asking
are you asking
1 about changing operator and so sim locking ?
2 are you asking if you need the pretty manual xda2nbftool way to upgrade xda2's ?
3 are you asking if it will work upgrading to 1.72 ?
1 you can sim unlock your device without changing rom
a rom never require you to use a special operator but the preset settings will be the operators who put out the rom
2 yes currently it's the only way with time people are likely to make it a bit more gui like the xdatools for xda1
3 it should work but some people are reporting issues with it or maybe that was the beta of 1.72
read about the exp of others in the posts about 1.72
Sorry - it's a simple question.
If I had an iMate I could just use the RUXXX upgrade without any fuss to upgrade to 1.72
However, I have a QTEK 2020. I guess therefore I have to use xda2nbftool to modify the operator name to QTEK - otherwise it will not work (despite the 2 devices being identical). I do not want to unlock a SIM or anything else (it is unlocked by default).
Just looking for confirmation of the above paragraph!
I read about the experience of others using the 'official' 1.72 and it seems okay (better battery life etc.)
Cheers
there are 2 errors i think which stop people from just flashing their xda2 flavor with any rom update in the form of an exe file
1 is country code error if the rom is released in one country it often have a block which will stop people from upgrading their another country xda2 with it, not sure why they do that
2 maybe a form of device block so you dont upgrade your qtek with the imate
i'm sure if you had an imate and the country code dident differ you would be able to upgrade without using xda2nbftool
with time a GUI tool like xdatools for xda1 will come and you'll be able to get around all these blocks without having to type
and such
If you want to upgrade your Qtek to Imate's 1.72 ROM, yes, you need to do all that stuff.
It's actually quite simple, the description on http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/HimalayaRomFlashing is full, accurate, and is actually suited to Qtek owners without changing a single instruction.
I flashed my device (though on the first go it ended up in a dead-ish screen and I had to re-flash) and it works swimmingly.
However, you might get somewhat nervous encountering such dead-ish screens; and for good reason, flashing is dangerous after all.
Perhaps it's best to wait for a Qtek upgrade, they seem to be holding back a bit, so perhaps they're waiting to integrate WM2003 Second Edition, which should be a much larger upgrade. Also, you'll still be covered by warrantee.
If you're having specific problems with your 1.6x ROM, it could conceivably be a good idea to upgrade to the iMate ROM (using the instructions on the wiki), but if you're not having any problems, or problems that also occur in 1.72, or which are a result of 3rd party software you're using; don't bother.
You are right that QTEK seem to be a little slow in releasing anything. In fact I can't find any detailed 'official' support on QTEK outside the pages of this forum. Their website appears to be in swedish and is of very little use!
The QTEKCorporation website doesn't even list the 2020! Strange, as I understand that HTC own QTEK.
Most vendors (Expansys for example) list the 2020 as 'discontinued' (which is how I managed to negotiate a big discount!)
I tried to gatecrash club-iMate but they didn't like my IMEI number, and when I asked why not they said that they don't support my device.
I don't really care (assuming that my machine never has a problem...) and is it seems to do everything I want it to, I'll wait before updating the ROM. Maybe something will come from QTEK eventually - although I am not sure from where!!
Cheers
well qtek were the first ones out with 1.66 it came on my device before most people had gotten 1.60

Who am I to contradict you? ;-)
Seriously: don't do the upgrade yet. Why?
- 1.72 has well-known problems. First, ClearType has become much worse - text just doesn't look as good as with older versions. Second, quite a few people report hangs that needed a hard reset (and cause a loss of all data). See, for example, the pages 45 - 50 of the PocketZenPhone thread in this forum. With my ROM version (1.60) I never had to hard-reset a single time. And I tried quite a few programs, some less buggy, some more buggy.
- also, although there are detailed instructions, things can always go wrong. And if that happens, you may need a bit of experience to sort them out. So wait a few more week, enjoy your device, read forums, and gain experience.
Cheers
Daniel
I have 1.72 for some time now and:
- it *never* crashed (I have to do soft reset from time to time like in any other release though, but no hang or anything)
- clear type is fixed. There's a post about a .cab to install which fixes the problem. ClearType is now great on 1.72
- my battery life improved over previous versions and I have a unit that can stand up to three days connected to my BT headset (a bluetrek G2) with me talking 2 to 3 hours a day and doing PDA stuff
so I would recommend you move on
Hi beljames, really I can understand you! I've almost destroyed a lot of good working car engines trying to "improve" them...
So: if you want to do this with your brand new QTEK 2020 go there
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=9060
and read carefully.
All worked fine for me. I upgraded from 1.66 ITA to 1.70 EN and my QTEK works perfectly!
About the cleartype problem you can find a fix in this forum: it works too.
I've also added a N2Ox system and a small turbocharger... it's a little bit heavier, yes, but it runs like a rocket!
Good balanced opinions!!
I think I'll wait a while to see if it annoys me. One single hang and I'll upgrade. Screw it up in Ghana and you don't get a lot of 1 to 1 technical support!!
By the way - I find it far easier to read the screen with Cleartype switched off (and mine is 1.66). Cleartype makes me squint!
An Loxodont - assuming that you are Italian, you will be amused to hear that the one car I used to lunch very frequently was an Alfa 33. Used to blow the inlet manifold clean off almost weekly.

in defence of 1.72 then i have had both these issues with 1.66
Go for it....
Hi all,
just to let you know I also upgraded my Qtek 2020 from 1.66 to i-mate 1.72 following the "manual steps" to overryde the country code error and it works fine. The steps are simplier than it seems and i did it in 5 minutes. The upgrade itself is quite boring....it took almost one hour to complete the upgrade on all stacks.
One thing i can tell you: after the upgrade the device gets faster and it seems it has a "new" battery.
The cleartype prob is solved and forgotten with the right patch.
The only problem i still get is the stupid i-mate logo at startup and i can't seem to get rid of it. I want my old qtek logo back....
If i can give advise on this: Just go for it.....
Portuguese do it better....and we will win Euro2004 !

Hi,
I have had it ! I decided to change my PocketPC OS to some company other than Microsoft !
Each time I install a new Program(most of the good ones) in the WM2003se ... either hang or Hard Reset !
Don't wast your time with it ..
Also , Don't wast your time developing or looking after better extended ROM !
Simply install you OS , then install all your favorite Programs in your favorite location (SD may be) then set all of the copy protection serials numbers and then perform a backup in your SD (using Sprite or any other that provide Self extracting) !
Whenever you have a problem .. simply hardreset .. then restore !
Sorry for being so straight !

Any
That may be a good solution for your situation but that doesn't mean that it will for for every body!
I like my self cooked Extended ROM and haven't experienced any hang or hardreset until know.
Also everyone must be aware of the fact that not every application will run on the w2k3 se. Just like it doesn't on your PC.
So there is not one solution and the solution is specific to the needs someone has.
Regards,
Mark
Waleed,
Sorry you feel that way but for me its the real fun part of owning a XDA II. Coz being an engineer also helps .. we love to fix things, even if it aint broke ... until it breaks.

My sentiments too... It's a TOY for me to bash!!!!!!
I've only experienced 1 hang:- with XCPUScalar ver 2.82. I upgraded to ver 2.85 and my device is running smoother than the old 1.66.00WWE ROM.
Mind you, I don't run that many apps either. Just calculators / Adobe / XSForms etc...
I installed and am enjoying using Fonix Voice Dial, which I never would have since ROM 1.72 isn't released for Asia as yet!
Either way, I am having a ball playing with this powerful work tool... cough... toy!
Recrem...
Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, WOW....!!, It's a Fenomenal ROM, I very like it !!!, but if you don't, just to downgraded to 1.72 + SRS Appl.
Cheers,
Isn't their any update regarding the o2 Xda Comet IMEI and Radio "Not Ready" problem. Can i install other radio roms to see if that works of later PPCs. It shows there is also no RUU support for Comet on o2 website either. Please help its my first PDA and i had it for only a day and i made it useless. Help would be highly appreciated.
ppl here are really helpful... i wasted around $200 dollars on this piece of crap shown it to weird mechanics and what not but all they say is it can't be done but the thing is its not at all a hardware issue its a software issue... which ain't there any software made for O2 Xda Comet and their likes for IMEI Repairs and Radio Updates just like newer phones... i'm sorry for the harsh tone but seriously i know its an old phone but that is shocking that everyone turn upto xda-developers for issues and this issue has to be stated clearly whether is it repairable or any other alternative to over comin the IMEI & Radio Not Ready problems rather using it like a PDA and not a phone. Comet is not even mentioned as a phone here this is discrimination i swear and i feel really disappointed in buyin my first PDA phone turning out to be a piece of junk coz it wasn't supposed to be supported by the company argh don't know what to do i hate O2 for bringin misery to my excitement i was so excited to gettin this phone and now all i'm left with is crap
Radio upgrade
Try going to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=549804..maybe we can help.
thanks but this is not the solution to the problem i'm facing buddy... i've installed these roms nothin worked for me... My IMEI and Radio is gone... These roms only give it a Better UI nothin else... My phone is not working all other features like Bluetooth, WIFI, etc are working properly
Hello,
I'm new here and I wanna get my 8GB SDHC card working in my SDA II.
I already tired several ROMs and several SDHC drivers for the Hurricane, f. e. hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=351586 or hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=344338 , but at anyway none did work after all
So I have a SDA II with inside a microSD 8GB Kensington with miniSD Adapter and atm hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475286 that ROM (WM 6.1) patched with some SDHC drivers but my SDHC card is not recognised by the phone...
Anyone got an idea?
Thanks in advance

Ouw and btw: is there any ROM for this phone with WM5 or WM6.5 in English? I only found the 6.5 Chinese version... or how to change it to English?
I doubt you will find anything for SDHC on this device. Only for Tornado - after a long wait - someone found out that OMAP850 drivers for the Startrk could also be used for the Tornado.
I don't know how the Startrk drivers were created, but for sure there are HTC devices using OMAP 850 which have SDHC support on WM6. So it was sure that the Tornado can support it as well from HW point of view.
If you do not want to create a low level driver for OMAP 750 yourself, you could invest in finding a device with OMAP 750 (like the Hurricane uses) that has WM6 and SDHC support. It is however not likely you find one :-(
If you like your Hurricane - don't worry. You can replace the PBA inside the Hurricane with a Tornado PBA without any other change to the device. They are 1:1 compatible (mechanically: identical size in any regard and electrically: LCD, keyboard, Camera).
So if you find a broken Tornado (no matter how worn or cracked) where the PBA is still alive - get it and give it a new live in your housing of the Hurricane.
Hey tobbbie!
Thanks very much for your reply! Und ach ja, ich bin auch Deutscher :-D
Hmm soooo, it would be very hard to find/create a driver for the Hurricane, right? But why are there topics with drivers made for the hurricane?
And otherwhise I'd have to open the phone and change the PBA with a Tornado one, right? But can I take that PBA out so easily? I won't have to solder or anything like that?
Again, thanks for your help!
Keyno(t)
There are no Hurricane specific driver threads. It is a re-use of generic WM 6 variant drivers on top of the low-level drivers.
And yes - if you manage to open the case (be careful when opening not to rip away the flex cables for camera and keyboard) then there is no soldering required.
Look up the service manuals for either Tornado or Hurricane (even Typhoon will do) to get an idea which screws to remove and how to remove the antenna cover. Challenge is to swap the LCD if you need to - some delicate handling of the flex connector as well there.
No impossible mission, but you need some mechanical skills and a rainy day without time pressure if you do it the first time.
Depending on your budget the cheapest solution may be to wait for a good opportunity on ebay to buy a used Tornado - they get sold for 20+ euros. If you do not need WLAN, then go for the SPV C600 (France) or the O2 XDA phone - but these are rare species these times.
Hmm at anyway I don't find anything in ebay I could need...
So you also said it could be possible to write my own driver? Is that true? And you know any How-To's that could help me a bit by this?
And really thank you for your help!
Keyno(t)
Finding this on ebay will require a few weeks - so be patient and keep on looking. How much would you want to spend for a Tornado (XDA phone - no WIFI, or the 8310 with Wifi)?
Regarding the drivers: Seems like you did not get the irony in my comments Writing low level drivers is something very special. It is virtually impossible to write a driver on your own - so forget this option!
Ouw okay, and yes I didn't exactly understand it
So I have only one choice
I think it shouldn't be more than 20€, max. 30€.
And could I really have also WiFi in my Hurricane, or why you ask all the time about WiFi?
I don't really need it, but if the price just change about 5-10€ I'd rather buy one with WiFi
And again: thank you very much for your help!
Greetings
Keyno(t)
Did you get it? If you replace the PBA - then you may still have the case of a Hurricane (despite in the US or China the same case carries a Tornado) - but the device is a Tornado then - bye bye Hurricane.
The Tornado was built in two flavours with and without Wifi - more common in Germany was "without" as the O2 XDA phone has no WLAN. The other device is the Qtek 8310 (also in silver as Vodafone VDA 2) which has WLAN. It will only rarely happen that broken devices are sold (people just put them in the waste or return them to the shop for recycling) - but keep on watching.
If you get a fully working Tornado I would not bother to replace the PBA but use it as it is - unless you disassemble it for fun and learning.
Okay thank you very much for all your help!
Now I got it
Greetings

...just to close the query: It IS (!) possible to have SDHC in the Hurricane working. read about it in my related kitchen thread (post 4) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1553132
Kitchen is not updated yet - but who cares anyway...
