1gb SD Cards - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 ROM Development

Hi Guys,
I bought 4 x 1gb SD cards from aria.com, 1 is a sandisk & the others are extreMemory< I was told it was a good, cheap place to get SDs. I then had endless problems with TomTom, changed my XDA II thru my insurance. It then transpires that the problem is the cheaper Chinese made cards. I told Aria about the problem but no reply so far. I would not recommend Aria as a source of SD disks for your XDAs

There are more threads here and on www.pocketgpsworld.co.uk on this subject.
The problem is with the stability of the card during high data-transfer rates. Some people claim high-speed cards are more stable, but I have never seen a test that proves that. Besides: High speed cards are more expensive. Keep in mind that the data transfer rate a Pocket PC (incl the HTC devices) uses is MUCH lower than the speeds the high-speed cards (claim to) work on.
I have used a chinese card (ExtreMemory) that had excelent speed (read) ratings. I performed not half as good as my much slower Kingston card.
Thus: The problem is with stability, not with speed.
Conclusion (not too subtle):
1. Never use chinese made (general: non japan/usa made) cards
2. Never use Sandisk, they're only good for digital camera's
3. Toshiba is reasonable good (ie. Kingston is one of the brands that use Toshiba manufactured cards), but do expect some lock-ups during high data-transfer rates
4. Panasonic made cards are said to be VERY good but hard to find & expensive
5. Lexar (usa made) are said to be VERY good and very affordable
just my 2 cents . . .

I have a Lexar high speed 1GB USA - made card, and I get frequent lockups in TomTom and the like.
Very annoying despite several attempts at reformating the card etc. Would a different choice of format (ie FAT, FAT32 etc) be worth considering?
Cheers
Ant

I use a 1GB PNY card from misco (UK) and have no problems at all. TOMTOM works fine and has never locked up. I run all games from the card also and have had no problems..

Could you post the details of these (Lexar and PNY) cards, incl the imprints on the back-side?
Unfortunately just the brand does not say it all.
I am very suprised on your results with the Lexar. I was just looking for a cheap shop to buy one myself, maybe have to reconsider . . .

I use a Sandisk 1GB with no problems ! TT3 together with mp3's playing from Austria to Holland, not one lockup.......

I used both Sandisk and Lexar 1Gb. Pocket Mechanic Benchmark showed that Lexar is 5 times faster than Sandisk and much more stable. I sometimes faced unavailable card with Sandisk and rarly with Lexar.

I have a US purchased Lexar 1GIG and it locks up frequently with Tomtom ..I have resorted to using my 512 Meg Viking card instead and it is now very reliable.
I believe the Vikings are actually Kingston cards

as a warning, people on other forums over the internet have reported that there are some fake cards out there that rip people off...
they sell cards saying that they have 4gb but instead it is just a 2gb, hacked someway to say its 4gb!
some cards never even work!
others may work for about a month, then break after that!
my opinion is, stop giving away your money, ans top believeing all the liars that say that their card does work!
and if you want a 4GB card, wait until some wonderful hack comes around and enables SDHC on the wizzard (like it did for treo 650).... and then only buy from reputable stores like newegg, and trusted names like sandisk !
why do you think trusted companies never make "hacked 4GB" cards????
Why are they releasing real 4GB cards in SDHC format?
BECAUSE THE 4GB normal SD CARDS DONT EXIST!!!!!!!!
there is always the choice of buying 2 2GB cards!
ohh, and no initianion towards a flame war.... i just don't like to see naive people get ripped off.... also, don't believe every single word i say, the same way you don't believe every single thing other people say, just take into account my OPINION when buying one of thoes non-SDHC 4GB cards.....
If you got your non-SDHC mini card to work great for you, but that's what i think, i would never buy any card from any unknown brand.
new to XDA, and already in love!!!!!!!!!
a cynic might say that the branded companies are only releasing sdhc cards because they cost more to buy.
but that's why i started this thread - to weed out the 'bad' sellers.
i would like people to post their own info and experiences, and they can always edit their post if the card fails at a later time.
one issue suggests that 4gb cards are real - why can only the newer serial numbered wizards recognise them? if the cards are all hacked 2gb cards, then all wizards should be able to see them, shouldn't they?

Moby Memory
Bought my 4GB from Moby Memory for £30.
Mines a U-TEK. It always works great for about a month and even benchmarks faster than my 2 GB card. Unfortunately after a month of use though it always decides to corrupt itself so after about 4 moths of having to reformat and put everything back on it I went back to my 2 GB card and only use it when I want to watch the movies and things that I have on it.

best class 6 microsd uk

i was just wondering what the best class 6 microsd card available in the uk is. i know people are saying a-data is very good but i cant seem to find one on the uk. i have tried a google search but the websites are american and prices are in dollars. help would be much apreciated. thanks in advance
edit: i currently have a kingston 8gb class 4 sd card but i dont think tis good enough to run the latest hero builds. also does using an adapter to transfer files effect the speed and is it better to use a usb adapter instead of a card adapter?
This site seems to have some good prices: http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/def...rwords=microsd&go=SEARCH&comp=&page=1&sort=3d . They are apparently not the quickest shop.
One guy on that site claims the transcend class 6 is slower than his Kingston class 4, but gave it 4/5 and bought a second... I think the Kingston is quite quick for a class 4 anyway, the rating system is a little wacky and no-one verifies it.
ok thanks. does anyone have a transcend 8gb card that can comment on the quality/speed?

I was in the exact same situation as you, live in the UK and couldn't find an adata card that everyone was raving about. I settled on a Transcend 8GB Class 6, and I have no complaints. I have *never* had the card show up as damaged, and have never had any issues with apps2sd and swap. The speed is decent too, never had a write speed bellow 6mb/s. I'd go for a transcend if I was you.
I bought two 8 GB class 6 microSD cards on eBay that are being sold as "FOR NOKIA E90 N95" and so far they're both working great (one is in my G1 and the other in friend's BB Storm).
I did read/write tests and they are not fake as far as I can tell and the price is really good, compared to branded products.
ok thanks guys. i seem to have found a website that sells adata memory card in the UK but im not sure if if they are reliable or not so i might stick to the transcend and sandisk ones.

SD "HC" cards

HI All.....i just got off the phone with Viewsonic and the rep told me that she could only say for sure that an 8gb micro SD "HC" card would work with the G tablet.....she wasnt sure about a 16gb but knew a 32 gb would not work if it was "HC".....I wondered if folks here can verify that, and since most of the micro SD cards I see for sale are SD "HC".....if anyone could suggest a place to pick up a NON "HC" micro SD care at a good price....thanks a lot for all the help......
I use a 16 HC every day.
For the larger cards, I don't know that you can even get non "High Capacity" (HC) cards. The prices on these are generally not bad. The tech specs of the device say that you can expand up to 16GB through the SD slot, but that may be due to the shear fact that >16gb (aka 32gb) cards haven't be available to consumers without a ridiculous price since late last year. You can generally get 16GB SDHC cards for about $30 online.
SD HC cards
Meritline has real good prices on SD cards and other things. You might check there. Some things ship from China so it takes a while to get them. I have bought quite a few things from them.
I can't post the link but you can google it or bing it or just put 2 and 2 together.
Thanks for the help and suggestions gang...I really appreciate it........
I run a 32gb SD HC card in my gtab and it works fine. You won't have any problems running an HC card.
So no one can confirm the 32G SDHC? I ordered one this a.m. and then saw this thread. I hope it works!
<never mind - just saw newer post!>

32gb micro

i was wondering if i get a 32gb micro sd...does the galaxys2 support it? and where is hte cheapest i can get it from?
According to the specs on GSMArena it says that it does, but that also depends on the brand you get. There are a lot of sellers who has it but some of them are fake 32GB cards where you put it in and it is actually a 16GB or the class is actually lower than advertised, for example a class 10 really is a class 2 or 4. Just make sure to buy it from a reputable place, like Newegg or something.
It will work. I'm using a Sandisk Micro SDHC 32gb Class 4.
Newegg was selling 32GB Micro SDHC's for $35 not too long ago, not sure if the deal is still there.
Like someone said, there are LOTS of fake one's out there. Make sure you get it from reputable reseller, Newegg, Amazon, etc.
Yes, the 32gb will work.
I just placed an order for a 32gb class 10 from amazon that comes with card reader for $61.... with prime shipping it should be here friday morning.
The fact that the SHDC slot is not hot swappable is pretty annoying, so I am going to leave this 32gb card in my phone and hopefully I can use the USB host cable I ordered with a usb-micro sd reader for extra space on the go.
Ordered a 32 gig class 4 earlier off third party Amazon seller for 44 bucks shipped. Will test it when I get it and report back

32GB SanDisk Class4 @ 1saleaday for $29.99 (about 2 week ago) = No problems.
Sandisk class2 at Amazon for 37.99.
Class 2 won't be too great for recording video... HD especially.
I've had my eye on the 32GB class 10 ADATA cards for a while, and since I just got a SGS2 maybe it's finally time to get one.
(Man. First few posts... can't provide links to the card I referenced... can't post in the development forums... I feel so restricted. :| )
everyone getting these ~$40 class 2/4 cards.... why not splurge for another $20 and have more than double the transfer rate?
Turns out the Galaxy S2 series even supports Micro SDXC (aka, 64 GB and up) cards too...
It's just that the stock kernel doesn't support exFat, so you have to re-format the card with FAT32 (at least until kernel devs can get exFat support worked in).
64GB has been confirmed to work, and with 128 GB around the corner, the possibilities for storage are pretty endless... Assuming you have the cash that is.
Coming from wp7 we learned that sandisk class 2 and 4 cards out benchmarked other cards of higher class. Not all cards but a few of them. The wp7 os was so sensitive to SD cards.

I'm curious about the Class 4 vs Class 10 war update.
When I had my Infuse, it was really determined that the Infuse 4G hardware really didn't take advantage of Class 10, so weather you buy 2 or 10 the speeds seen were the same on that device. Wondering if anyone has any experience with this handset, and can tell me with certainty if there's a difference on THIS device. I'm happy to upgrade, but want to know things like "Scanning Media" will significantly go faster to make the upgrade worth it.
Thoughts\Opinions\Dirty looks appreciated.
I would guess you wont see real world differences with class 2 vs class 6/10..other than video recording/playback. but when transferring files there is no way a class 2 can compete with higher rated cards.
and I wish I knew about the SDXC cards working... might have to order one and send the 32 back.

When you say file transfer, my understanding is the transport hardware samsung is using slows down the transfer. Do you know this to be true\untrue? I just don't want to buy class 10 and not feel a wooosh of faster speed. Think I'm better off staying put w\ 4?
I can't definitively say that the phone slows transfers since I haven't seen a reliable source report that.... I have yet to try the class 10 card myself since it hasn't arrived. I only know what has happened with the cards I do have.
From what I read in regards to card class and phone use, the majority consensus seems to be that in order to get "true 720" video you need to have a card rated higher than class 2.. considering this phone does 1080 recording I didn't want to be cheap.. for an extra $20 I got a card from a reliable manufacturer and source that was the highest class and capacity available, it wasn't a hard choice for me.
I transfered a couple 3.5gb .mkvs over to the class 4 card I currently have in the phone and it kept timing out or the transfer times would jump up to 30+ minutes and then fail nearly every time. This card works flawlessly in other applications so it might very well be the phone slowing down these transfers. I tried with a variety of other class 2 and 4 cards with similar results. Plugging any of the tested cards into the card reader in my pc transfers the files without a hitch.

Good observations. I'm kinda in the same boat as you. That was my experience. I ran the SD Card test on the Class 10 I had and the Infuse said it was just SLIGHTLY faster than the Class 4, so i kept the 4. At the time it was about $30 vs $65, so wasn't worth it for mediocre performance. Now I'm starting to think maybe it's worth it. I just don't like that when the card gets full of photos and songs, it takes forever to Scan Files every reboot or USB plug in\out

I've also read that it is a TERRIBLE idea to use the phone as USB storage as the speeds are horrendous. I can vouch for this as my Transcend 32GB performs faster in the usb adapter than through the phone. Why? I have no idea

Samsung 512gb SD card works well too...
I'm going to reopen this discussion, if folks are willing.
We all want high capacity cards. The Tab S4 is a laptop replacement tablet after all is said and done.
All Amazon prices.... (6/28)
So you have four choices....
SanDisk Extreme, 1TB (now available on Amazon) for $427. 88
SanDisk Extreme 512GB for $169. 99
SanDisk Extreme 400GB for $85.49
Or
And Samsung EVO Select 512GB for $100
According to reviews the SanDisk cards have a higher read speed than the Samsung card, but the same write speed.
Seems to me the 1TB card is just too expensive. The faster read SanDisk 512GB card is more than 50% more expensive the equivalent slower read Samsung card. The SanDisk 400GB card is half the cost of the 512GB card.
So which do you choose and why?
I currently have an older SanDisk 400gb card, am leaning toward the 512GB SanDisk. But salivating over the 1TB card.

Tab S4 is limited to 400gb sd card per spec or has it been tested with 512?
Sent from my SM-T830 using Tapatalk
The SDXC format is good to 2TB. They had a similar low "upper spec" for my Tab S2 of 256GB and 400GB worked fine. Virtually everything I've read says that the upper spec they quote is not based on the reality of the hardware. The way one site explained it was that the upper spec is set by marketing based on the largest available card out at the time the marketing material was generated. If I could afford it, I'd go for the 1TB card without any worries
There are several, other card brands out there now on Amazon for 512GB cards around $100. It is hard to find direct head-to-head reviews of the actual 512gb cards, but it seems like it holds true that they all write at about the same speed, but SanDisk Extreme reads faster - but costs 50% more.
A possibly unrelated aside, I've attached a 1TB hard drive via USB without any issues outside of the pain-in-the-*$$ that NTFS gives. As far as I can tell in the memory manager, USB OTG drives and memory sticks are treated the same as the SD card.

Well, if you read the earlier posts you'd see I use a 512gb sd card...
What you need to remember is that the specs put out are generally what was available at the time...
No company is going to put out that the tablet will support a 2Tb card as that isn't currently available but that is what SDXC is supposed to support, then it will go to the next standard., Heck, most phones available at the moment won't support the 1Tb card according to their specs as these were NOT tested pre-release...
