installing programs / games to the sd card
Is this possible..?
Yes. Using Active Sync install the program but when you get to the point where it asks you to install in default memory choose no and install into storage card instead.
Some programs can be affected by running from the storage card but most are fine.
thanks Pete...!!
:?: Hello All; I am about to get and O2 XDA in a few days; I have read manuals and web sites on the memory management, I understand the Main programme sits in ROM and programs in RAM, however want to know if applications run in Ram only, or if you can get them to run in the additional storage card. (i.e. SD/MMC)
In other words, are the expansion cards for backups and document/file storage, or is it extra RAM to install & run applications.
Thanks for your help
Jed
Hello Jed.
Most of the programs do also work from the SD/MM-Card.
You can use the expansion for backup, data storage and "program place".
Regards
Stefan
No.. sorry. Programs can be stored on the SD card, however, they cannot run on them. Clear?
What I mean is, that you can install you apps onto an SD card, but when you run them they are loaded in to the built in 'managed' RAM. Unfortunately this is finite, and also is the only place that contacts, tasks, and appointments can be stored.
So, to those who have a 32Mb XDA, don't let O2 fool you by telling you it is easy to upgrade your XDA to 64Mb with a SD card - it's not quite the same.
There are other upgrade options available.
As a new user/owner of the Siemens SX56, I have quickly discovered the limitations of the units memory/storage capabilities.
While I may not be using the correct rhetoric (please correct me where necessary) I am hoping someone might be able to help me.
If I buy a 256MB SD Card, can I use it to as a place to install and run programs, or am I limited to using it for data storage only? Can it be recognized as MAIN MEMORY instead of simply a "storage card"?
Otherwise, what are my options to increase memory/storage?
Also, COSTCO has the 256MB SD Card available for $104 CDN (plus 7%GST and 8%PST), is that a good deal or should I look elsewhere?
Many thanks!

Yes you can install and run programs from the SD card!
No the SD card will only be recognized as a Storage card!
Your other option is to send your unit in for a memory upgrade.

Thanks for you reply Qman, it is really appreciated! Can you offer me some more detail though?

Do I need to do anything differently when installing new pocket pc applications so that they are installed on the SD card?
Does the SX56 automatically add the new available memory to its configuration and then manage space for file storage and/or memory usage? Can I choose one or the other for storage of data files and/or applications?
Is there any difference between "Main" memory and "Storage Card" memory??? I initially thought there was a difference that needed to be considered, but now I'm not so sure. I kinda likened Main Memory to the RAM on a PC and the Storage Card to a mini "hard drive" ...which lead me to think that the Storage Card was used ONLY for the storage of data files. I guess I was wrong in my thinking?

the price you mentioned, in my opinion, is not a good deal. i was in hong kong and i was able to buy a 512 mb sd card for $114. you may need to search around sites for a more lucrative package.

it is not true, that the SD-Card can be used to run programs. You can use the SD Card for your data and install programs to the sd Card. When you're running a program the internal memory of your pda will be used.
So you can install much more and bigger programs at your device, but the memory for running programms won't be changed. You see, SD Card is a little bit like a Hard Disc in your pc. You can install more programs and save more data, but you're still limited in the maximum amount of running programs.
You can install programs to your SD-Card via Active Sync. Normally youßre asked, if you want to install the software in the main memory. If you select no, you can choose between main memory and SD-Card.

Stefan
also the sd flash is a lot slower then internal ram
much like a harddisk is slower then ram in a computer
so if you could merge the sdram with the internal ram and access it as one pool it would be troublesome because the interal ram had to slow down to match the sdram or
you would need some asyncron access plan which would be pretty complex since you could be reading some data which were 1/2 on the slow sdram and 1/2 on the much faster internal ram
ok, and on reverse ...
have you come across any software that can not be installed on SD card and can not be run from SD card ??
regards,
monika
Yes there are some programs that won't run from the SD card. I can't remember which ones I've run across though. I almost always try to install on th esd card first. If the app won't run then I put it in main memory. Good luck - Jim
thanks for your response - good idea ....
try to install software on SD card first

I got my 1GB Sandisk today, very happy. Loaded loads of Mp3 and having fun.
i want to use gps software that need more memory to run then i have
on the other hand , i have memory card with free space
is there a way to use this card as internal memory ??
No. You can try installing the programm on the memory card, but for running it, the internal memory will be used....
Stefan
cant use sd cards as application memory
because
sd is much much slower
because
sd's have a limited nr of writes before they die kinda like cd-rw discs
Hi,
I tried installing high end games which require high memory space on my canvas HD. This was as per the guidelines mentioned on the download sites as well as some threads on this forum. The problem that I am facing is as follows:
# I have an external memory card 14GB. I installed the .apk file first and then copied the contents of the cache folder (.obb extension!!??) into external sd card>Android>obb. Then I tried to run the game but it asks me to download the cache separately. What am I doing wrong?
# I also wanted to know, I have my default write disk selected as external SD card. So whenever I install any .apk file, does the program get installed in the external memory card?
# In the apps section, there is one phone memory and internal SD card memory. Does the phone memory correspond to 2 GB default memory and the internal SD card correspond to the 14 GB? While installing any program, what memory should I select?
Cheers
