Wallaby (MDA1) syncronization problems

Hi there,
I have the following problem with my MDA1 (Wallaby) from T-mobile. Because we I must use at work on my Notebook computer GroupWise program from Novel which means that Outlook MUST be deinstalled. Therefore I have no possibilities to syncronize my Calender, addresses, tasks. Does anyone know someother syncronizing program or is there perhaps some other ways to do it?
asalo.
maybe this one ?

Anyone sync Notes using Mobsync?

Here's my problem, I don't have Vista installed on my desktop, only XP. It is a work PC and I don't see that changing any time soon.
So I am constrained to use MS Active Sync 4.5. It syncs contacts, tasks and calender ok.
Problem is that I rely on Notes on my 7501 heavily at work and can not sync them to my desktop.
Tech support at my job is no help, they just say that my 7501 is not supported. What a bunch of idiots - go back to sleep....
I have heard of Mobsync that will force sync'ing of files to the PC. Has anyone done this with Notes?
And if so, what are the settings and file locations that you used to sync notes to the desktop???
Thanks
Keith Walker
PS I find this super frustrating that I have migrated from an old Sony Clie running Palm OS and syncing of notes was automatic. Now I migrate to WM6 and it won't sync to it's OWN Microcrap desktop OS, WTF????
im running vista, and xp, but can sync my notes on both, with active sync, and mobile device centre, have you tried changing the sync options in active sync and click the notes icon.
Yes I tried that. When I click the notes icon to change the sync options, it tells me that:
"No settings are required for Notes Syncronization. If enabled, the next time you connect your device, all notes on your Device and in Outlook Notes will be syncronized."
So my active sync is enabled for notes sync, but it is not doing that.
The only other thing I can think of is that there is a special location in the 7501 file folders for Notes location. But where should I locate the notes?
Thanks

Store the notes in the documents folder on the Athena, not on the microdrive or miniSD.
thanks! I will try that....
On WM6, I have 'My Documents' and 'Documents and Settings'. My notes are located in 'My Documents' and won't transfer over.
So I take it that you can't have subfolders within the Documents Folder?
Hi,
notes are only synced if they are in root of "My Documents". Subfolders are NOT supported.
If you are using your notes heavily, think of using "OneNote" instead of the standard Outlook notes. OneNote is perfect ...
Best regards,
tsfnet
I've got hundreds of notes in the My Documents root and none of them sync over. Active Sync is of no help either.
I will check out One Note, thanks

Hi,
can you access your notes through windowsexplorer?
Can you see your notes there?
("<devicename>\My Documents\", you should see Some files named "note1.pwi" or something)
Best regards,
Yes I can, but when I copy the notes to my desktop, the pwi file can not be opened.
Perhaps there is a manual import feature in Desktop Outlook or I could somehow get a viewer or file converter for those pwi files.
Any pointers?
Thanks

Here's an update, I was able to transfer my notes by syncing all my files to the desktop. Now I have a bunch of *.pwi files that I need to somehow port to my Outlook application. Anyone have an idea how to do that?
Barring that, anyone know of a good pwi file viewer??? Word works, sort of...
Sorry, been off sometime. I just don't get it, cause if you see your notes in this folder, they should be synced to Outlook automatically.
Gonna tell you if i find something new concernig your problem.
Best regards,
I've been having the same problem. It looks like WM6 does not convert files when copying from PDA to PC or synching with Desktop (WM5 is doing that just fine). However I do synchronize with Outlook notes directly and it works. I can read my synchronized notes from within Outlook 2003. Another way to read PDA notes is with MS Office OneNote. You go Tools-Copy from Pocket PC and you get all your notes in OneNote. You can then send a note to Word or Outlook as an e-mail.
Hope this helps.
Let me guess, MS One Note costs money, or is it free??
My source of trouble is that the work environment here runs MS Outlook 2002, which probably doesn't support Notes transfer....

It's part of MS Office 2003 like Excel, Visio, etc. Unfortunately I have no experience with MS Outlook 2002 and PDA collaboration. I presume Outlook 2002 does not yet have Notes as a separate subfunction.
Hi,
Outlook 2002 supports notes, but I remember some issues with syncing them. As far as I'm on Outlook 2007 now and didn't use 2002 for years it's hard to remember.
OneNote is part of 2003 and 2007, but only in Professional Version. As a regurlary user of OneNote I absolutely recommend it. It's way better than standard Outlook Notes.
WM6 Notes to Outlook ActiveSync Fix
I just had the same problem using WM6 and Outlook 2007. Notes created in Outlook on my PC synced to WM6, but notes created under WM6 did not sync to Outlook on my PC.
I determined through testing that ActiveSync assumes that Notes to be synchronized from WM6 to Outlook will be in Main memory. I fixed the problem as follows:
1) Start the "Notes" program under WM6.
2) Click "Menu"
3) Click "Options"
4) Click the down-arrow to the right of the "Save to" text box.
5) Select "Main memory"
6) Click "Ok"
Then, create a new test Note under WM6. Synchronize via ActiveSync and you find the test Note you created under WM6 in Outlook 2007.
Syncing Notes with Outlook Versions prior to Outlook2003 never worked for me.
I had severeal WM Devices but syncing the Notes never worked until i got Outlook2003.
Syncing the files manually is of no use because ActiveSync has no converter for them, so you only get the raw .pwi files on your Desktop.
There are ways to import them manually to Outlook but i haven't found a method to automate this.
This seems to be a General Problem. I found a Microsoft KB Articel concenrning this Problem. Maybe it will be of some use for you.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305544/en
Best thing you can do is upgrading to a newer MS Office Version, neither a New OS nor an other WM Device will solve your Problem.

Thanks for the link, I have to talk to the IT at people work to see if they can get their collective heads out of their asses and get a new version of MS Office!

How to transfer Calendar appointment and call log from Windows Mobile to Android?

My WM touch 3G is no longer function properly, I plan to switch to Sony Experia S. It comes a problem that how all my data stored in WM transfer to android, especially appointments and call log in my old WM transfer to the new android. I usually backup my WM calendar data by PIM backup and the backup file is .csa. Originally I plan to import this .csa file to Outlook 2010, then export to Business Calendar Apps or Gmail. However I find this .csa file cannot be recognized by Outlook. Could anyone kindly help to guide me how to export my WM calendar and import to Business Calendar Apps or Gmail? I would prefer to export it to Business Calendar Apps as I don't want to store my personal calendar in google server. I am also looking for how to transfer the call lot too, I try to keep it as possible. I appreciate for your kindly help. Thank you.
Do anyone know how to solve the problem? Thanks.
If you use Bitpim then I believe you have the option to save certain things as Excel files. Would that work for you?

Thank you for your suggestion. However, I use the build-in calendar in Windows Mobile 6.1. I think it is probably not Bitpim. I googled many times and searched XDA threads that still don't know how to export the WM calendar to android.
Try looking up Bitpim. It's a program for data transfer and media exchange. The website will tell you if it's compatible with your phone. It has a few options for exporting from devices.

[Q] Direct synch with Outlook

For what I read, direct synch with Outlook is not possible with Lumia 920, I would have to go through the cloud - which I refuse. Is there a go-around available? Please let me know such programs and explain how they work. Thanks for your most appreciated support.

MS Exchange? Hosted or otherwise...
Sorry, I didn't understand what you meant. Can you please ask a proper question? Thanks.
No, you cannot direct sync with Outlook. You will have to use your network connection to sync Mail/Calendar/Contacts. This will all be done through your Microsoft account (formerly Live account) on-line and over the network.
Didn't I say in my original post that I don't want to go through the cloud? I'm looking for an alternate (offline) possibilty - if there is one, please let me know how it's called and how it works.

This is not an easy thing to accomplish. Microsoft is pushing strongly to have you store everything in the cloud. The best solution -- if you're up for it -- is for you to create your own private cloud. You can do this with a "hosted exchange" service; it is still online, but instead of a public service like live.com or google, it's your private calendar/contacts/e-mail.
If you don't want to do that, try this answer from the Nokia forums.
Hi wobblybob,
Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting!
When you are told you can sync a Windows Phone with Outlook that would be correct. What you are really asking is 'can I connect my Lumia to the PC with the USB cable and sync with Outlook offline'. The answer to that would be no.
How you sync with Outlook can be answered in a short and long version. The long and extensive version can be found here. The short version is:
For Outlook 2003 and 2007 install the Outlook Hotmail connector and setup an account for your LiveID, for Outlook 2010 just setup the account and it will prompt you to install the connector. A step by step guide can be found here.
Hope this helps, let us know how you get on!

Thanks for all those links. After reading through their lenthy, very interesting and even emotional contents, my conclusion is that there is no way to synching Outlook via USB or even Bluetooth. Akruto Sync (http://www.akruto.com/get-akruto-sync/) which had been mentioned can't synch via USB, too. Are there any other offline synching methods out there? Please let me know.

Sorry, I kinda thought my response was pretty clear. As of now, no, there is no way to do this. I know, I asked the product group.
Never understood why people still want to do such an antiquaited thing. Cables?!
Youre email comes via SMTP over the net anyway, so security cannot be it. Can it?
And almost all phones will have a data plan.
Intruiged (or not) to know the reason.

Well, I would think it is security and privacy . . . same reason I've had to roll my own cloud solution.
Yes, SMTP is fundamentally insecure, but the primary way information in e-mail leaks is not through interception or snooping into SMTP packets, but rather through hacking someone's e-mail account. If I have all my e-mail stored in g-mail and someone gets my password through social engineering, or just by knowing me really well and guessing "m0nk3y" -- they've got all my info. If however I'm keeping it all offline in my local outlook and syncing it to my phone that way, the attack surface is a lot smaller.
And that's just e-mail . . . outlook also manages calendar, and people may not want their calendar items listed in a google or outlook account, but rather kept locally, again for similar reasons.
From what I understood reading between the lines, you guys are talking about different aspects.
Syncing is always done between the client and the mail provider. In that aspect it is useless to try to sync with your Outlook, which is only an application that manages your mails, calendar and contacts.
In my case, my Outlook has accounts for my work mail (through a dedicated MS Exchange server), my private (through a leased MS Exchange in the U.K.) and Google & Hotmail. The syncing is been done directly at the servers for the exchange accounts, which guarantees a perfect sync between my phone, laptops and desktops at home & office. No clouds involved here, so this is the perfect solution. Downside of having a leased MS Exchange server: the price tag!
Google, Yahoo and Hotmail accounts all go through the Cloud.
If you really want to have a grip on your data, I can only suggest to buy a NAS (i.e. Synology with Mail Server add-on), rent your own domain name, and set up your own mail server. A bit tricky, but worthwhile in the long running

Bringing an old issue back on top
I'm bringing this topic on top again by asking if there has been found a solution in the meantime. What I want to do: Synchronize Outlook and files via a USB cable (or via Bluethooth), therefore NOT going through the cloud. How about if an xda-developper would create an appropriate software (something like Mobile Device Center 6.1 that worked perfectly under Windows Mobile 6.5)?

Nope. Not possible with email. The phone is a first class device now, as that's where the market took the functionality. People don't want to have to sync. Sync bad.
For files, there is no file explorer on Windows Phone. You can copy media to/from the device via USB, but not "files".
Only the contacts can be imported directly to the phone via Bluetoth without any sync with outlook or cloud. For the rest is not possible. For contacts I did this: I saved the phonebook from my old phone, copied to Nokia 6303c and after that I copied it to NL920 via Bluetooth.
All my 1051 contacts was in the phone without problems!
Some of you are plain wrong.
check out HTC's website. The HTC 8X can usb-sync with outlook through HTC sync software.
The Lumias with 7.5 and older can, too, with Nokia Suite.
but the Nokia win phone 8s can't (yet)

thaks for this answer.
Contact sync in the cloud seems enough tricky, as you loose your contacts pictures (I read). personally I just tried to put my contacts on my microsoft account unsuccessfully, having the error "too many contacts" I tried to sync half of them (about 450) and I never succeeded. tricky is tricky.
Till this kind of stuff is not resolved, I'll never get a Windows 8 phone.
With Android, it is also tricky as Google creates contacts on every email you send, and even if you disable this, groups are tricky in google accounts. for example I exported my Outlook contacts to my Gmail account. I lost the contact pictures and for every contact included in more than one group (for ex : friend music medical ) Google creates a new group called "friend, music, medical" , so if I search in friend group, I won't find that guy who is musician friend and doctor. Google is smart, no?
the good solution for me, as I have an Android phone, was to use MyPhoneExplorer that syncs perfectly (I mean all elements) Outlook and phone contacts. this can be done by cable or by WiFi been on the same network with a password.
A program called Akruto sync is the closest solution to this problem. It does not work over USB, but it will work over your local wi-fi connection. Assuming you use WPA2/AES with a strong password, there is little chance of your data being intercepted while you are synchronizing. It basically simulates Exchange ActiveSync on your PC, allowing you to use any mobile device that supports an Exchange account to synchronize with your local desktop installation of Microsoft Outlook. I've been using it for a couple of months now and it works flawlessly. They plan to implement synchronizing of notes in a future release. It is a 100% cloudless sync. As for privacy of cloud-based e-mail, there's always encryption.
The average user doesn't understand the true risks of using the public cloud. Those of us who do take the necessary precautions to protect ourselves. The unfortunate fact is that the other mobile devices on the market have similar native or third party cloudless synchronization options available, and better overall integration with Microsoft Exchange/Outlook. As an example, Windows Phone 8 does not utilitze the categories from Microsoft Outlook, though it synchronizes them in the objects through EAS. As a result, there are a myriad of users who choose a non-Microsoft device simply because it works better with Microsoft products. . Ironic and saddening that Microsoft doesn't seem to recognize this. It's likely the primary reason why all post-WM6.5 devices have trailed behind the competition. It is hurting their reputation and ultimtately results in lost revenue.

[Q] Migrating from Nokia to Google through Outlook - Birthday problems

Dear Forum,
I’m having some hiccups migrating the birthdays from an old nokia 7230 to Google, and let them sync from there to a S3.
I’ve been able to transfer all the Contacts to google with *.vfc, used Nokia PC Suite to transfer Calendar (Events + Birthdays) to Outlook and from there synced with google.
I have a problem with the layout or rather the way Outlook interprets the data which was placed in the Nokia.
Outlook just places the Event on the top bar for the day it was created, not respecting the time it was scheduled for. The time of the event is mentioned, e.g. “Dentist 18:45”…it’s not a big issue, as I can just drag the event to the proper time. I hope that Google Calendar will get synced with the same alert I set in Outlook though…
For birthdays, the Nokia has a very efficient way to remind. You just enter the exact birthdate (year included) and on that specific day you get an alert for that person, showing even the age.
Now – how do you do this in Outlook or Google ? It indeed imported all the data from the Nokia, but it’s not showing the age neither the year or birth. I’ve found a few apps like Age+ or Birthdays that do exactly that.
However, if you uninstall the app those dates are gone…not good… Obviously they are backed up in Outlook/Google… but I haven’t found anything else that comes close.
I was thinking of maybe using GoogleDocs, make a formula, and link it to the cell in GoogleCalendar…not sure if that works though…
Do you maybe have another idea ?
Thank you for reading me,
Kind regards,
Ken
Possible fix for your calendar
This fix works for me on a Nokia Lumia 820 synching with Outlook (!Live/Hotmail).
The fault is with Outlook (!Live/Hotmail). Just follow the instructions in the attached PDF.
The PDF is for the Birthday calendar but will probably work for the others too.
Hope this works for you.
Regards,
Howard
