Unlocking and moving from ATT to Cingular with my SX56 - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Here's whats happening as I'm trying to get my ATT SX56 to work with Cingular so you can learn from my mistakes...
First thing, backed the whole thing up to my SD. (I'm not a dumb as I look. I can't be...)
Next step was running XDAunlock. That didn't work.
Next, I installed SE ROM 1.2 to unlock and that went fine. (I also installed a number of other ROMS while I was experimenting.)
Then I decided to install WM2003 to move on. I put in my Cingular sim but I can't get the phone to work.
Thinking I must have lost a setting or something, I tried to reimage from the SD but WM2003 will not recognize my backup file to restore from. (It's no big deal since I have all my data synced but I had some nice little games I don't want to loose. Any ideas on recovering this?)
I'm thinking that playing musical might have messed with the radio stack somehow so I decide to try the RSU Version 6.24.20 upgrade. I moved the files to /windows but fired off the utility before I moved it. I paniced and turned the machine off but now it doesn't do anything but show the initial screen and the ROM version.
I'm planning on trying the "Recover from GSM Error" process to fix it. Will that work or am I screwed?
Big thanks to you all for getting me this far! This is a great platform and I'm glad to see so much interest!

IT'S ALIVE!!!!
It works! I finally got my SX 56 over to Cingular. Running the RSU 6.24 did the trick.
Thanks to all who have helped and thanks to all the other newbies who posted all my questions before I had to!

Unable to Flash

Hi all,
New to this forum. Actually, new to the device (so PLEASE be gentle ). I have an AT&T/Cingular 8525 I got two nights ago (14 Aug) and am trying to upgrade to the latest release version for Cingular. I've downloaded and installed the RUU file on my desktop computer.
When I execute it, I go through the steps as indicated, and when it gets to the point where it starts to push the update - my ActiveSync on the desktop shuts down. I then get the failure message and am left in the cold.
My device came with:
ROM 1.34.502.1
Radio: 1.16.00.00
Protocol: 32.53.7018.01H
I'm running ActiveSync v4.5.0 build 5096.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Joe
edit: I've been reading the upgrading notes on this forum, and haven't seen anywhere the problem with ActiveSync closing down. Also, didn't find this forum until AFTER I started looking at ROM upgrades. I'm surfing around now so I don't brick my phone.
What OS you running? Vista? XP?
Keep reading as you are doing now - good work.
Desktop OS is XP MCE
My desktop is running XP Media Center Edition, and I'm up to date with the service packs and other High Priority and Optional updates (via Windows Update).
I am able to ActiveSync with the Desktop without a problem. It remains connected and data is passed. I can browse the device.
When I try to execute the RUU file, I hear the "device disconnect" sound, the ActiveSync window closes (I've been leaving it open on the desktop), and then the upgrade times out.
WTFO.
I continue to read, but may end up keeping the unit on the original software (not my optimal solution). Anyone else experienced the ActiveSync termination problem on the desktop?
Thanks again,
Joe
Well, have you upgraded anything? Like upgrading the SPL to HardSPL?
What I would do, is this:
1. Read Mrvanx.org upgrade guides.
2. Put HardSPL on there. (If you have the disconnect problem, just put the phone in Bottloader mode, then plug into USB, then run the RUU.)
3. Upgrade to whatever ROM. Try the normal way, if that doesn't work, try the "start in bootloader" method described above or try the SD Crd flashing method.
I personally, take apart any ROM that I want to flash (use winrar to extract the exe and dutty's good nbh tool to extract and rebuild the nbh) and use the most recent custom_ruu and flash that way. I never use whatever RUU is packaged with the ROM. I don't have communication problems. Give it a try, don't give up. If you need to find stuff, try the google search link in my signature - the best way to find stuff on the forums.
Todd,
Thanks for the replies. I just downloaded HardSPL, and will try that when I get home tonight. I also downloaded "Hermes_WM6_WWE_vp3G_v3[1].0.0_ATT.rar" to upgrade to WM6.
To answer your question, no, I haven't upgraded anything (yet). I have been able to put a couple of programs on the device (Battery Pack Pro, Photo Contacts Pro, and Conversions in Hand), and they all work fine.
I'll try the bootloader method if I can't get ActiveSync to make it happen.
Stand by for my (hopefully happy face) post(s) tonight.
Joe
Well, I'm wearing my smiley face 'cause I was able to successfully flash an update into my 8525 last night. While I didn't do it on this machine (my desktop - didn't try), I was able to install Hard-SPL and upgraded to WM6 from a different computer.
I am still running radio version 1.16.00.00, but will try to update that over the weekend. I figued that since I haven't BRICKED this thing yet, I'll keep working on it until I do .
Thanks to all (especially the over 970 postings in the Hard-SPL thread - I read through ALL the pages). This is a great site and I'm looking forward to customizing the H3LL out of this phone.

Reading through the pages is why you are wearing your smiley.
Glad you got it going. Since you are on AT&T, I would suggest you start with Radio 1.50 or 1.48. Those are the ones I have had the greatest success with. 1.48 was shipped with a Cingular update and 1.50 is the newest. I don't know what carrier it shipped with, but it has worked well for me and others I know who are on Cingular.
Good luck and have fun!

Thanks. I'm thinking about 1.48 as I've seen a number of folks with it in their profile. Since I loaded Hard-SPL on the device, I should be able to safely update just the radio, right?
Any benefits to going all the way to 1.50?
Joe
Edit: I upgraded to radio 1.48 (using MrVanx guides). The step-by-step procedure was absolutely OUTSTANDING! I have tested the phone, and IT WORKS! Only difference is now I connect via Edge (shows an E), before it was GPRS(?) (it showed a G). Does it really matter which connection method it uses?

Yeah, you can do just the radio. No problems.
Regarding 1.50, I personally get better battery life. Reception seems about equal to 1.48 for me. Performance is highly dependent on your geographic specifics. Personally, I would put 1.50 on for a few days, then try 1.48 for a few days. Then you can pick whichever one works best for you.
Thanks. As you can see from my edit, I successfully updated to 1.48. I'll use this as my baseline and then see about going to 1.50 in a bit.
Thanks again,

Hello marinerjoe,
I have tried to upgrade my friend's Hermes and experienced the same problem. Instead, I can flash Hard-SPL on it but fail at upgrade (being kicked out by the Activesync).
May I know if you just complete the upgrade with a different computer with nothing else? Could you advise me your path of success?

I did not attempt to do the upgrade from the same desktop machine upon which I had my problems. Instead of trying some troubleshooting suggestions I read on this site, I took the easy way out . I went to a different machine that I had administrator priveleges on, and did it there.
The difference between the two machines? My desktop has Symantec Antivirus and the Symantec firewall. The other machine (that worked) doesn't have the firewall. There are other differences also, but I'm thinking the firewall might have been a contributing factor.
Others on this board with WAY MUCH more experience with me can tell you if I'm full of SH!T or not (there are some here who aren't shy or afraid to FLAME SPRAY those less ed-ju-ma-cated).
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. GOOD LUCK!

ATT 8525 with a T-Mobile SIM - Sorry!

Appologize for posting the thread twice... I wasn't sure if this goes to the Hermes or the Herald forum...
Hello All,
I recently got an ATT 8525 and I'm trying to use it with my T-Mobile (US) SIM. I was able to successfully unlock the SIM and CID with an util/rom I found on this site (I think the post was from Pof). And I also re-flashed the phone with the latest ROM available.
But after about 5-10mins of usage the signal dies and when I reboot it says No GSM. Looks like the Radio ROM gets corrupted. I tried just re-flashing the Radio ROM and that doesn't help either. It works for short while and again the signal dies.
And also, I'm unable to install any of the generic ROMs (Fantastic Mobiz, PVET 40005) Although I'm connected to Active Sync when I run the Step 1 (ROMUpdateUtility_NV_G3.exe), I get a ERROR [222] : DEVICE NOT RESPONDING. And when I run the step 2 directly (update_rom.bat) I get an cannot update itsutils.dll maybe in use error.
As you can tell I've been messing with phone a lot for a couple of days with no luck and my frustration level is kinda high
As of now here’s where I stand. I re-flashed the phone (Image: 3.62, Radio 1.50) and it’s on the “Tap the screen to set up your windows based mobile device” screen. I plan on leaving it on this screen until I can a good solution.
I would like to get rid of the ATT ROM and install one of those hybrid generic ROM that is not Carrier specific. Any help will be much appreciated. Share your ideas, I’m very experimental 

SPL: 1.40.0 lipro
ok ur going all over the map here.. did u hardspl first? also pvet 40005 isnt a hermes rom.. um try hardspl first THEN flash to a new rom maybe once you successfully do that then try a new 3.62 rom.. i run austinsync buts its naked..just like i like my women. ha. but if ur looking for a full blown try fun_key's rom or blinkys.. these arent carrier dependent
hey man jakeypoo, Thanks for your reply. I kinda figured that I was all over the map.
Okay first appologize my ignorance. What is a HardSPL? I did a search on this forum and I found Hard-SPL-V7.zip. Is this a good version to use? Also when I run the exe, All options are grayed out except for "Force Using SSPL" and "Is it Hard-SPL". What do I select.
Thanks!
Hardspl v7 is the latest version out there, its the one for you to use so that you're safe from future mishaps.
I also have an 8525 on T-mobile... so no worries.
Hope this helps.

still problems (no gsm)
Thanks whistler4ever. That link was really a great help.
Here's what I did...
1. Installed the Hard SPL version 6
2. Installed the latest ATT ROM (ver 3.62 radio: 1.54) I had to do this because the radio on the phone was corrupt (says "no GSM" on the start screen) and couldn't install just the radio rom. kept giving connection errors.
3. Installed Schap's WM6 Pro 3.57 hoping this would get ride of the ATT ROM and my intial problem (no GSM) will go away.
Everything was fine for like 15 mins, then my phone just froze. I reboot the phone and sure enough the radio ROM was gone (no gsm). ;(
Running out of ideas.
1. Could this problem be because I'm using a TMobile SIM on a ATT's radio ROM?
2. Is the radio ROM specific to the phone type and provider(ATT, TMO..)? Is there a generic WM 6 radio rom? If yes, where can I find the latest version?
3. Any bright ideas?
Thanks again!

I was able to flash just the radio ROM - version 1.51. But again after a few hours the Radio got currupted. I also tried to follow the instruction ( http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeProblems#problem5 ) to use the mtty.exe utility, but I don't get a USB prompt. I get Cmd prompt and if I still enter the password, it says invalid password. please help!!!
And how do I do the USB monitor capture? I could post more details that way. I'm using my girl friend's old razr now and it's painful!
I have used my t-mobile sim on AT&T rom's and other roms with no problem. I would try going back to a factory rom and then changing back to a cooked rom just to confirm its all a clean install. also, try downgrading your radio to a 1.47 or 1.48 (those have been proved pretty reliable across many cell providers).
Thanks Whistler. I'm going to start with the 1.48 version and if that doesn't work I'll try the 1.47 version. Not giving up on this.
I found 1.47 to work very well with t-mobile even when traveling...
Thanks Galaxys. I just installed the 1.47 radio. I have fully signal and the 'E', but I can't receive or make calls.
It almost looks like my TMO SIM is not compatible with the 8525. It always works for the first few minutes after an install and then stops working.
I'm very certain the phone is in good condition.
Should I try an older radio version.. like a 1.24 or something ?
Can I install just the tmobile radio rom?
I'm also going to install TNT 2.0 pro so I have the exact same set up as you and see if that makes a difference.
no luck!!!
wow... after all this time and effort still no luck. There's got to be something very basic that I'm not doing right. Senior members any help???
I have spent a lot of time reading the wiki pages and dead hermes thread. Tried out a lot of suggestions listed.

Sounds like your doing everything right, because your flashed rom, radio, and Edge network are all functional. Since only the GSM calls don't work, I would go back to Tmobile and get a a new Sim card installed (they should do this for nothing & test it while at the store).
Also, if U got this device on ebay your IMEI could be blocked. see this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=322587
Try to flash the entire UK T-Mobile ROM, then remove the internet settings and install the correct CAB for T-Mobile.
UK ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337163
PROVIDER SETTINGS CAB: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311446
a-h-t1, Junner2003 and galaxys - I'll try all your suggestions.
a-h-t1 - The first 2 steps went through fine. While I install the radio ROM as part of step 3, the installation doesn't go past 0%
I'm going try Junner2003 idea now. I'll keep everyone posted on my progress.
install stops at 11%
Hi Junner2003,
I was trying to istall the UK Tmo ROM you suggested and it stops always at 11%. I've had this problem with other ROMs as well (12%) but after a few tries the installatons goes past it, but real slow. Any ideas?
Thanks for sending me the links... very helpful!

Hi Galaxys,
I don't think the IMEI is blocked. Or maybe it is, how do I find out? I don't have any of the symptons listed on the link you sent (don't hear the beeps or anything).
I originally had a T-Mobile wing. The LCD screen cracked (don't know how). And ofcourse TMo won't replace it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335346
I got 8525 from my company. It's almost new. Only used for a day on an AT&T SIM. This phone is free, and so I really don't have much to lose... so all out experimenting
Tried insalling from the micro card, even that stops while installing GSM. pissed!!! Why would the darn Radio not update???
this may sound stupid but if all else fails, why not...
my mda use to have signal then it would just disappear as well after 15 min or less..
turns out the sim card wasnt pressed in properly.. so i just put a piece of paper on top of the sim card to make it thicker and get the battery to press it down harder. and it solved all my problems...
just a suggestion..good luck

See this post here for a possible reason (and technical explanation/theory) for your device stalling during radio update. The fix suggestions at the bottom of the page may help you - in particular :
Try cooling the device down a bit before flashing as the PIC chip (where your radio ROM is held) may flash more reliably/easier when cool. Don't ask why - that's from it's datasheet ;-)
The paper on the SIM card is a good idea too to rule out dodgy SIM connection - Great idea r0mmel

So Hopelessly Lost!

Even after reading this forum all nite, I am still soooo confused, maybe too much new info in m'head. At any rate, I am trying to UG from WM5 to WM6 and am having a heck of a rough time. Everything goes good until it actually starts the process, at which time I get the 260 Connection Error. After plenty of research on here, I decided to try to "flash" the ROM, to no avail, for nothing happened. I can get into bootloader mode but then nothing else happens (perhaps I'm not waiting long enough? How long should I wait?) and I never see the screen pictured here - http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_SDCardFlashing - so I just give up and reset. I am currently downloading the HardSPL utility so I can try flashing after the IPL and SPL ugrades. But I do have some questions still --
(1) Does my phone need to be "unlocked" to do this and how can I tell if it is or isn't?
(2) Can I just use the ROM that I downloaded from the HTC site or must I use one found somewhere on this forum?
Any other advice? All will be appreciated. Thanx.
Oh, yeah -- I'm working with a Cingular 8525 Hermes [HERM100 model number] Pocket PC. It's specs are:
ROM version 2.15.502.3
ROM date 04/09/07
Radio version 1.40.30.00
IPL 1.03
SPL 1.11
Have you read this http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeForBeginners ?
Re:
Yes, I have, plus all the links branched from there. After about 3 hours of reading, I felt ready to try flashing, but it didn't work. The HardSPL utility is done downloading, so when I get home I'll try that and hope I finally get a successful upgrade. If not, I'll be back to the forums. Thanx!
What ROM are you upgrading to? The official AT&T ROM? I'd try that first if you're not already.

What operating system are you using? If its Vista you MUST use Mr. Vanx's guide to get past the connection problem. The standard Vista HTC driver is wrong when we want to flash rom's in bootloader mode and vista WMDC. Get it here:
MR VANX's VISTA GUIDE
Hard SPL is great after that. Just remember you warranty may be void if you have to go to AT&T for repairs and the see that bootloader. You shouldn't need Hard SPL to flash the standard AT&T rom or VP3G's or other AT&T based ROM's, but better safe than sorry.
Be sure to close EVERYTHING in the taskbar! Don't start any programs, allow any updates to mess around with the computer while its flashing..In fact, I disable my AV program and internet connection totally when I flash ROMS. (My Kaspersky started updating and virus scanning during my 1st flash..sucker froze and freaked me out!)
Once I dealt with unlocking and connection issues, I flashed the standard AT&T ROM, performed a hard reset immediately and then connected via WMDC and synced everything. I tested it for a few hours then decided to flash VP3G's excellent AT&T based ROM v3.62.3..I like to do a hard reset immediately after flashing to burn everything in...I've seen others in this forum do the same.
Another ROM I've found fun is S64's(Starbase64) 3.62 WWE v9 - It's not AT&T based but you can get WPBEAR's Config files to set your Medianet and proxy. There are other At&T settings CABs out there like Dr. Puttinghams. S64 ROM also includes Advanced Config 1.1 to set your keyboard to Cingular mapping.
Good Luck!

My desktop PC is running Windows XP...
After trying the HardSPL method - which upgraded perfectly - I continue to have the above-mentioned problems; 260 Connection Error and inability to move beyond the tri-color screen to the one pictured on the page which instructs how to flash via SD card.
Thanx for the list of ROMs I can try. For the record, I have been using the "official" one I downloaded from the HTC website. *sigh* I guess I'll next look for the tutorial I saw somewhere around here on how to upgrade from the tricolor screen [or something like that, I think it was], as well as your advice.
But I do have another question -- how do I format the SD card? The tutorial I used on flashing with it mentioned formatting so I'll retry it with the card newly formatted (I didn't because it said I could just delete everything off the card OR format it).
I'll let you know how it goes...
Ahhh...Sorry for your troubles...I didn't have luck catching an upgrade from the SD Card method on my 8525 either.
I know it seems a bit much but, is your active sync working correctly? Upgraded to 4.5 and all that? Can you sync and Backup all your data then try uninstal, reboot, re-installing AS?
I wonder what would happen if one tried Mr Vanx's instructions on a Win XP box?
I also had heard somewhere about messing around with when Active sync is started. Also as a last ditch, maybe try this from the HTC Wiki:

Just another tip... Try a different usb port. I've found that sometimes certain usb ports behave differently during the upgrade procedures. So, far I've upgraded three 8525's on Win XP and only one gave me the problem you've described and connecting the sync cable in another port corrected the problem.

OMG! SHIHAYADREAMER! That was JUST the TICKET! I read it and realized that I'd been doing it right all along, I just didn't realize I was! THIS time, I hooked up my cable at the very beginning and let it go. Before, I'd started waiting to hook it up until the instructions asked if I had because I'd gotten to the tricolored screen (the bootloader?) the 1st time and figured I did something wrong. Thanx to that forum, I returned to what I did the very first time and got victory! *falls down sobbing and weeping with joy* I wasted 25 hours because of fear! OMG! *dances around, singing* I've got WM6! I've got WM6!
I know that being reminded to turn off my firewall and stop all the programs in the taskbar played a big role, as well. But I just give a big "Thanx" (on Thanksgiving! *LOL*) to everyone who answered this board because you all helped me so very very much.

Bell Mobility HTC6800 + DCD 3.0.0

Can anyone share their experience upgrading their Bell HTC6800 ROM (including radio, unlocking SPL, and upgrading PRL) with DCD 3.0.1? I have never done it before but curious to hear if anyone has had success or failure.
I noticed that DCD released a Bell ROM in his 2.3.2 kitchen but not in his 3.0.0 kitchen. Does anyone know how to port the correct Bell settings into the 3.0.0 release?
My main reason for upgrading is of course better performance but more importantly I am curious about aGPS and how I can use it instead of my Bluetooth GPS receiver. If anyone can share that would be much appreciated.

Thanks origins81. I noticed now that DCD added the Bell ROM to his 3.0.1. So can you share you experience with this ROM upgrade? Did you have any problems (I assume you've done this before)? Can you share your experience if you are a Bell HTC 6800 user?
1. If you have not already done so, run the 2.40-olipro unlocker. Your device will again be left in tri-color screen.
2. Flash the official sprint 3.35 update.
3. When the device boots for the first time, do not pass screen calibration. Flash a 3.x.x ROM. (that being the custom rom of your choice)
Think I only used the official Bell rom for about a day before i got sick and tired of it and flashed to one of DCD's clean roms, never looked back since then...
As much as I hate Bell, I purchased this phone, had it for about 7 months and got into flashing roms, well, this newest ROM from DCD was the trickiest. First I tried using the Kitchen (disaster), I finally got it to work, installed it, and I kinda forgot to read the instructions, you have to be SURE to install the Olipro 2.40 first, and flash to the new radio, or it will do one of two things. 1st it will either continuously restart or 2nd thing is it will get stuck on the infamous red, blue, and green screen. However if you do get stuck on this, you can flash the rom again, then install the newest radio and it *should work.
But after all that pain and misery, I got a little better signal (I'm not too sure if this is caused by the new rom or not), the GPS works great as always, and seeing as Bell charges 2 arms and your first child for data, I haven't tried the speeds for Rev. A.
P.S- If you ever need help with your Bell 6800, just ask, I've been troubleshooting the same phone for a couple months, and I know how to use a kitchen, just a PM away.
Thanks guys. You have instilled more confidence in me now. I am just going to make sure I have the original stock ROM from ustar as well as the Titan re-locker just in case (I want a backout plan). I will wait a little longer until everyone irons out the kinks of this new 3.35 radio and I will give the latest DCD ROM a try. Thanks again!
I've used the SPRINT update and it works fine. I've added the quick GPS program that comes with the DCD version and I am going to change the startup logos from Sprint to Bell...(As soon as I figure out how). I didn't need to reprogram anything!!
I just got my phone today, gonna give this a shot...
oh man... i ran the olipro 2.4 file and it took me to the tri color mode and then tried to flash it with the latest sprint update. it went up to 4-5% and then it showed an error of Update Utility. i tried to go bak to the Bell update and it did the samething but this time after 1%. can someone please help me out here? I'm with bell.
ok now i'm stuck at the bell screen and at the bottom it says "No Radio" cuz i tried flashing the dcd file.
Well, to begin with, here are the steps I took to accomplish what I have.
1. Flash Olipro 2.40
2. Flash Radio to 3.35 (For the newest version of DCD's rom)
3. Flash the ROM to DCD's rom.
Now, the first time I did this, I got stuck at the tri-color screen, such a pain. I then tried flashing the rom again, and it rebooted continuously and I had no idea why. This was because I didn't flash to the newest radio. So I did that, and it worked, so try those steps, and good luck.
On problem that I did notice is that my phone always has the roaming triangle on?? Hopefully it's not costing me roaming charges... I was going to try and use the DCD 3.0.1 rom but don't want to chance it. I'm going to try playing with it some more an see what happens.
I'm running DCD 3.0.1 on my Bell 6800 and it's working great so far (day 2)
Follow Origins81's install points above, and remain calm if it takes a try or two to get past the 2.40-olipro unlocker 3-color screen step.
I'm having some issues ActiveSync'ing to both work and home PCs, but I don't think it's related to this ROM.
GPS works great with Google Maps
The alarm clock bug is fixed (e.g. not working when plugged in)
Got it working and everyhthing is great except is doesnt play video in the media player...Working on it.
Well for some reason I can't seem to activate my phone. I hit Talk then I enter ##911224#. It tries to connect for 15 secs then hangs up.
I _thought_ I did everything properly.
1) Ran Olipro2.40 (actually it was the unlock from http://www.phonenews.com/how-to-add-gps-to-htc-mogul-xv6800-p4000-titan-2663/) it looks like it's got Olipro2.40 in it.
2) ran official upgrade from sprint (RUU_TITAN_SPRINT_WWE_3.35.651.2_RS_TITAN_3.35.04_4350H_SPCS_AM_Ship.exe)
3) Extracted DCD_3.0.1_Bell.exe and ran the RUU.
hope I didn't perma-brick it.
M
Ok fixed it. Browsed around the and found out in a Howard forum that you have to type ##111111# (doh!) before. Ok my heart can start beating again! Posted for posterity. The code that I used must have been for a different area. This phone is from the GTA.
can you give me a link to those howard forum posts because i ran into a problem ... after a last flash my phone works but its not activated... I tryied ##111111# but i get a code check error... ##911224# doesnt do anything... ##778# works but 000000 code doesnt so i cant get in... HELP
Roaming After Update
After suffering with the pesky Bluetooth issues with my HTC, I thought I'd do some searching on the Internet to see if others had the same issues. Lo and behold, it looks like a real bug with the HTC. After reading some forums, it looked like the latest Sprint release would cure the problem. I downloaded an unlock program ("Hard-SPL-MFG") and the Spring update (RUU_TITAN_SPRINT_WWE_3.35.651.2_RS_TITAN_3.35.04_4350H_SPCS_AM_Ship)
and proceeded to update my HTC.
After a few unsuccessful attempts (stuck at the three color bars a couple of times, restarting a few times on it's own) I managed to get the unlock code and Sprint update installed.
The problem I have now is that it appears that I am now roaming even though I'm in my calling area (I'm with Bell Canada)!
Help! What should I do??
Check the bottom link out, had similar issues when I first flashed. If you have any further questions let me know
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363693&highlight=FOR+BELL
i follow the step, but when the phone restart, i stuck a the bell screen...
i'm unable to connect with the usb.
Can you able to help me ? to complete the installation or trying to go back OEM
- i do the first step; see the red, green, blue screen (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=9093)
- flash the rom
- now stuck......
thx for your precious help

Hi TwistedWaffle, Are you from the montreal region? I am looking for somebody who would do this stuff for me... Can you help?

110% non-brick upgrade ?

Is there anyway that is 100% safe to upgrade or is there always some amount of risk that a unit will end up a brick ?
I've read so much here and on other forums my head spins lol. I was like all set to just do it and then I got the phone lol, now I'm getting cold feet because I read so many people have bricked their phone.
Also can the SPL be done by SD card or does it need to be done with a computer ? I know some will say do a search, I have and man there are so many choices is there just a page or link with a simple idiots guide ?
Its better to do all the upgrading through a PC. Its more safer than SD Card upgrade.
Simple way
Do the HardSPL first then do anything you want. Try to look for Mr.Vanx guides
I agree with beastfellow, install hardspl first then you can flash any hermes rom you like. I have flashed my heremes over 50 times,i even flashed it 12 times in a week as long as the roms you have have no radio or spl in them then they should be fine to flash. Just make sure they hermes roms you are flashing.
hardspl can be downloaded from here http://pof.eslack.org/hermes-unlocker/
guide to how to do it is located here
http://www.mrvanx.org/thg/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=16&Itemid=26
other guides and there links can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299462
anyway my advice is to go for it. I have only ever bricked one device and that was a wallaby back in the day.
good luck and make sure you read EVERYTHING ,twice if you have to
Dalork,
I felt exactly the same way as you a couple of years back. What I did was to read every scrap of info I could find, constantly assessing the risk, while looking for a stable rom.
Key criteria for my rom search was what other people were saying about that rom (good and bad) and the developers willingness to resolve issues. In the first instance this led me to Schaps and his brilliant roms. For my rom history see my signature.
Read the following threads very carefully, then read the threads on one rom from Schaps and, say, a rom from Kin0ken. Look at the 6.0 roms, NOT the 6.1 versions...

Also use these search tools:

forum - http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=+site:http://forum.xda-developers.com&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all

Once you are fully genned up then prepare your kit carefully, e.g. make sure your phone batttery is fully charged, then upgrade your rom as you logically and carefully work your way step by step through Mr Vanx guides.
First time I upgraded I had the Mr Vanxguide open on my desktop PC whilst I ran the rom upgrade off my laptop. Using the laptop meant that in the unlikely event of a power cut (does happen where I live) I wouldn't instantly end up with a bricked phone.
Good luck and PM me if you need help/any further info.
Cheers
WB
Thanks for the help folks, I'm just worried I'll brick it as I have a friend who tried this and his is a nice paper-weight now.
I must be getting confused as I thought doing the flashing direct frm the SD card was the safest ?
Anyways, I'm not certain at this point which is the best or safest ROM to go with. I was going to do the Hard-SPL-V7 (2.10 Olipro) and was think of the Schaps_WM6Pro_Hermes_4.31_WWE_Full.
ATM the unit has ROM 1.30.707.4 8/22/06 and Radio 1.20.31.10
I don't think it's ever been flashed as yet as the bootloader is IPL-1.01-SPL-1.06
ask your mate if i can have his paper weight i have a nice rock to swap for it
scousemartin, lol I had already asked him that before I bought my dopod as I was hoping to come here and find out if it could be fixed.
Another point, after upgrading the phone to say WM6 or whatever can you still recover/reload the original factory WM5 system/set-up ?
I guess I'm in-fact quite happy with how the phone is already I just really want to be able to use a 8GB Micro SDHC card so I can load more programs and music. I don't know if any of the radio ROM's will improve my signal as such but battery life seems to be ok already. Used the phone quite a bit today, started off with 80% battery and finished off tonight with still having 70%.
Then why not search for the wm5/6 sdhc fix instead of potentially bricking your phone. Try this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=344338
Also, I still reckon, and I believe I'm not alone, that flashing via the sd card is safest....
Direct quote from Wam7's posts -
Flashing your ROM without HARDSPL is like going to a South African brothel without any condoms...
and not using a MicroSD Card is like walking into a prison, dropping your pants and yelling "come and get it boys!"
I rest my case...

Thanks heaps for that, and I agree I did think flashing from a SD card would be safer as there is no risk in USB/sync problems, no cable to bump...etc..etc... But then I'm a total newbie, what I think doesn't always make sense lol.
If I just do the Hard-SPL-V7 and then something like Schaps_WM6Pro_Hermes_4.31_WWE_Full and don't do the radio ROm is there really much chance of bricking the Dopod ?
While I say I'm not bothered with upgrading the OS and everything else, it's mostly because I'm **** scraed of bricking it lol. I guess it would be silly to say I wouldn't like the better features of a decent upgrade, I just have to get my head around it somehow. But I WILL need more space as I really like to put lots of music on it and some games/apps. Hence the SDHC, I'd like 4GB but would love 8GB as I doubt I'd ever run out of room then.
As it is with my current phone I have 3 x 1GB cards which I just swap around and I hate having to do that and I'm always losing/misplacing the damn things.
If you are SERIOUSLY thinking of upgrading, Hard SPL your phone. You can find the thread "Hard SPL or how not to brick your Hermes" in the upgrading section. Its best to do this as it is the safest we thing you can do. It won't prevent a brick but it makes it a lot more fixable. I have never bricked a phone that I couldn't fix (yet) with Hard SPL on it.
Its fairly difficult, I find bricking the hermes when using the sd card method, as long as you make sure you have Hard SPL, Unlock your Hermes(if needed, did this as wasn't sure) and make sure your battery is charged.
Unlock before putting Hard SPL on though as it downgrades the SPL to 1.10 olipro.
Also use Hard SPL ver.7 (should say SPL 2.10 olipro after upgrade) as ver 9 is the developers SPL (says SPL 2.60) and throws up error messages (if done from the pc) after flash.
As for the rom, no-one can say what is best... What is suitable for me may not be for you. If you ask this questiopn on a thread you'll be inundated with "This rom is best..." remarks. Search and you will see.
Hope this shines some light on the subject (forgive me if this seems scattered, too much caffeine and not enough sleep), anyway,
Cheers....
Thanks for the info and it does help/shed light on it. I have read heaps of info about most everything here, maybe more than I should have even to sart off with lol. I would normally not have been so concerned except that I have a friend close by who tried this exact way of flashing and still somehow bricked phone. Though he did say with folks help here he did get the unit working again but the radio never worked again I think he said.
I already downloaded a copy of Hard-SPL-V7 and Schaps_WM6Pro_Hermes_4.31_WWE_Full.
Not certain if this is the right one for me or not but seems alot of people like it and find it stable. I also grabbed this HER_DopodAsia_AUS_1.30.707.4_1.20.31.10_WWE_Ship though I'm not certain if it's any good or not. I haven't grabbed the unlocking file, not sure I need it or not. With flashing the Hard-SPL-V7 by sd card am I right in what I have read that all I need to do is rename the nbh. file and not the RUUWrapper_exe.
I am finding it difficult to get the Dopod to use 3G for web browsing/email though. But someone told me that the original set-up/ROM wasn't much good for the Optus/Virgin 3G network.
Yes you do only have to copy and rename the .nbh file. Don't forget to run the sspl.exe file from the phone however if you upgrade Hard SPL from the sd card. I ran the unlock tool as a precaution. I DID use the pc for this. I also used the pc to install Hard SPL. Hard SPL takes about 2 secs to install so no real trouble there but the unlocker will change your radio rom. I'd probably install the official Telstra rom to get your tradio back to 154.30.10 after unlocking (it changes to 150.00.00). Also, if you need to search for CircAU's roms as they are made for us Aussies and have a little tool that allows automatic setup of MMS/SMS. You just pick which carrier you have and press start.
You might be able to find a cab file for it on the forum. Do a search for"CWW Enterprises Aus Operator Con.cab". This can then be loaded into ANY rom and used to fix your setup for MMS/SMS. Make sure you also run the ARCSoft MMSComposer cab file first...
Cheers...

You got me really confused now lol, I thought I only needed to run the Hard SPL and then whatever ROM I liked (was looking at ones without radio ROM's). Also do you think it would be wsie to flash it with a radio stack for Telstra when I'm using Virgin as it seems Virgin is using the Optus network.
Sorry if I sound daft just the more I read the more confused I'm getting. Also it seems that everyone does have a different opinion on how and what is best. Just want to work out what is best for me before I have a go at bricking my phone lol. I've not found setting up SMS/MMS hard at all. Seeed pretty easy, having most my trouble setting it up for Virgin's 3G access for web browsing. Just can't seem to get it to work, got it set-up for wifi at home no drama but don't really need web access from the phone when I'm at home and have several computers.
Sorry, Information overload...
1. CWW Enterprises Aus Operator Con.cab - this cab file does a quick loading of sms/mms setting on the phone. You can use ANY rom and then setup your messaging with this. First however, install 2.
2. ARCSoft MMSComposer cab - This allows the use of mms on your phone properly. Some roms don't seem to set up your mms properly. If you have this installed then run 1. it will fix it all up.
I believe it should fix up ALL settings (including the 3g ones) as when you flash a rom, no native settings are kept and I've never had trouble using 3g after installing 1. and 2. then running 1. (will be in programs). It will soft reset your phone after setting it up.
Confused...
Really, just find the rom you want, check in settings as some have an auto network wizard to set this up. I just like CWW Enterprises Aus Operator Con.cab as it was made by an Aussie to use here. Its good when you don't have the network setup wizard (lite roms generally don't come with the frills)
Hope this clears it up....(preferably like glass and not like mud)
Cheers...
I am intrested in buying a Hermes, most likely the unbranded HTC tytn that I believe comes all unlocked.
For that one the procedure is the same still, right?
Hard spl install and choose rome you like
I have seen eithe Schaps 6 or the newer 6.1 with diamond stuff in it
So would I have the same procedure. To find the hard spl (not sure which version to install) and then find the rom w/out a radio?
es_bih, yes. Its the same procedure. Instyall Hard SPL ver 7(ver 9 is the developer one. It tends to throw up an error after upgrading via pc, no problem though).
As for the rom, make sure its a hermes rom. Any you find on this forum are for the Hermes BUT if you go to the other forums (herald, kaiser, etc....) the roms will brick your device as it isn't compatible with your device. Cooked roms are good but until you get to know the vagaries of wm6.1 I'd suggest to stick with wm6. Its more stable than wm6.1. Play with that and then when you are confident enough to try, then go for wm6.1.
Most if not all cooked roms come without a radio rom.
Cheers...
Tried doing the Hard-SPL-V7 on Vista x64 computer and get error 260 problems.
Tried on a XP laptop and got a different option. The first screen that comes up after running the RUUWrapper.exe not only give me the choice of "Force SSPL" but also allows me to tick "Is this Hard SPL ? "
In the guides I've been reading it says you should only get the "Force SSPL". So my question is seeing as I have the option of ticking "Is this Hard SPL?" should I ?
Installing Hard SPL? Tick SSPL. After that you can pick either.
Hmmm, can't seem to get it to do it. Sounds so simple I must be missing something somewhere. No matter what I try I stillget the ERROR 260 (update error)
