Imate Pocket PC Phone Edition - Unlocked but still Telstra - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 ROM Development

I'm a newbie to Pocket PC, so this may be silly, but been hunting around this forum all day and unable to get things straight in my head.
My problem is this...
I have a i-mate pocket PC I purchased 2nd hand from ebay. Has Telstra's config stuff all thought it (inc splash screen).
Im connected with Vodafone, and I've just enabled GPRS, but I cant seem to connect. I think its all to do with all this Telstra stuff thats in my PDA, and so I started looking into Roms, and the extended Rom (was all very new to me, and I'm now a little confused). I need the configurability back. I cant currently do much with the config as its all biased towards telstra (ie I cant change the phone number, or email servers, or even my email address. all I can change is the username part of the email address).
When I started looking into Rom/Radio versions, it dont seem to make a lot of sense.
My device details are;
ROM version: 1.72.00WWE
ROM date: 03/15/04
Radio version: 1.14.00 <-???
Protocol version: 1337.24
ExtROM version: 1.72.871
Microsoft Pocket PC Version 4.20.0 (Build 14053)
Model No: PH10B
I dont understand how the Radio version can be higher then the latest reported here, and I dont know if thats relevent, or if I downgrade that I'll be able to get to configure things, or if its totally unrelated...
I noticed the 2005 thread, and thought that would solve my problems, but thats no longer available.
Do I need to install a new OS, or just the Extended rom stuff from somewhere to get the configurability I need, or am I completely missing the plot here?
Help! What have I gota do to get some network configability back in my PDA?
Thanks in advanced.
Signed - Philip "confused" Middleton.
PS. Never used a forum before, so I hope I posted this into the right place...

Hi and welcome
Could you be in the wrong forum?
Please verify the picture of your device against the ones in the index
http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php
The model number and Rom Versions seem not to match those for the Blueangel.
If this is the case I will move the post to that section once I know which one.
For here your device needs to have a slide out keyboard, does it?

Moved from blueangel section as this is xda II.

xda: Which ROM to use?

Hi there,
A close friend has recently upgraded to a new phone, and passed me her xda. It's currently got the following:
ROM Version: 3.12.07 ENG
ROM date: 08/13/02
Radio version: 4.06
Protocol version 32S54
Model No.: PW10A1
I've just downloaded the lastest ROMS from myxda.com (3.20.06 ENG, 07/30/03, Radio: 4.21, Protocol: 32S54), and am just about to flash my unit.
I don't have an SD card, should I try to get one before I do? (There is no data in the xda yet, I just got it a week ago). What'd be a 'good capacity' to get?
Besides the 'official' rom above, which would be the best rom to install onto the xda? I'm very keen on having IIWPO, but am a little daunted by all the options available out there. (And if applicable, please advise on the 'best' PPC2002 and PPC2003 versions).
Should i be looking at 'alternative' radio stacks, or is 4.21 good? Would be nice to have the option to switch between GSM900/1800/1900, but it's not very necessarry. (I'm gussing this is controlled by the radiostack, and not the ROM?). My current region uses GSM900/1800. I do occassionally travel to the US
Advice please? Thank you!
Your phone is capable only of 900/1800 so will not work in the usa on 1900 band. I would suggest leaving your radio stack alone if it works ok as 4.21 seemed to break more than it fixed. The sd card method of upgrading is a much better way of doing things in my opinion. You can use the bootloader to backup your existing windows ce then you can flash a new rom from the kitchen and if not happy you can restore your system, this isnt the case with radio stacks so be very careful about radio upgrades. xdatools gives you a heap of options for backing up, reading, writing, storing etc of rom images. The original idea for rom flashing by programmers was partially to do with the fact that there is lots of unused/wasted space in the rom area, the developers decided to write lots of useful programs to the unused space which makes the xda a super pda/phone instead of a mediocre pda/phone.
Thanks for your reply; however, I was quite excited about the modem capability, and have since installed the 4.21 radio stack. Am not sure what the issues are, but I probably won't notice, having no prior experience with the unit.
Been playing with it for most of today, and must say it's very interesting. There is a whole slew of sofware most kitchens carry, that I have no idea where to even begin!
Would it be correct to say if I cooked a rom with only 'theft protection' checked, and everything else turned off, it would be the same as the 'original' rom that was released? Would like to learn more about the xda before venturing into the powertoys
The question I have however is: How do I choose which BaseROM to use?
In Lumpistefans ROMkitchen, I see:
WM2003 -
4.01.16 ENG
4.01.19 GER (default)
A.30.09 ENG
Whats the difference between each of the above? Does O2, or O2asia have a WM2003 release yet? It would appear some of these ROMs, once installed, cant be downgraded without an SD card - which are these? Or at least, that is the impression I get when browsing these forums. Can I replace them with the same version cooked rom? (just so that i won't get caught in a bind experimenting with the theft protection)
PPC2002 -
3.17.03 ENG O2-Euro (default)
3.19.01 GER O2
I currently have 3.20.06 ENG from 02asia,which seems to be a newer version than in the kitchen. Should i try to extract mine, and send it to the kitchen (that is if they take uploads/contributions)?
If I wanted to build my own kitchen, where do I start? I do already have access to a linux box that runs a webserver and supports php. Been searching all over but cannnot seem to figure where to download the kitchen scripts (a direct URL please?). Am actually interested in creating my own custom boot screen (THIS PDA IS MINE! - with a picture of me :lol
Other misc questions:
If I wanted to 'zero' the total in/outgoing calls? Do I need the serial cable with xda manipulator? Could someone point me to a circuit dragram where i can wire my own serial cable if that is the case, or is there some other way to do it now? Can I still do this having upgraded my radiostack to 4.21? or did i just lose the chance to do so?
Is the headphone connector similar to any other mobile phones? (eg: can I use a nokia, or motorola handsfree?) or is it propietary?

4.01.16 is the offical WM2003 release from T-mobile. It's the same as the 4.01.00 Beta. As some mates here reported some issues in this ROM, I 'm still using the 4.01.00 with no problems at all.
The 4.01.19 is obviously for the German devices. The 30.09 is a very good stable ROM from AT&T except that it has a very silly sound issue that kept many from using it

You may PM Stephan to get his advice, but if it's only for a customized boot image, I believe there is a special tool for that can be used with the .nbf file before flashing.

It's propietary, but you can get an adaptor to allow you using any standard Nokia headset ... check Expansys
Thanks Biso, hadn't realised there were 2 seperate timers, and I was originally looking at settings-device information, and could't find the 'reset' button.
But now, I'm back with a little situation...
Spent some time reading the board, and learnt about the differences between the PW10A1 (900/1800), and the PW10B1 (900/1900). The little I did figure out is not to muck with the 'other' radio stack, and stick with 4.21 (my unit is from asia...)
However, I didn't quite realise the ROMS were different too. So, right now, my PW10A1 has a 'b' WM2003 firmware in it. No big problem, except when I wander into settings-phone-band, I'm forced to choose either 900 or 1900 where I then I lose network coverage.
I did try the bandswitch tool but that didn't work - I basically have to reset into the bootloader and select 900/1800 there. :x
The only place I can find to cook ROMs right now is Lumpistefans ROMkitchen, and the little I've learnt so far is
4.01.16 ENG - PW10B1
A.30.09 ENG - PW10B1 (I prefer this over 4.0.16 ENG)
Yes, there is a whole slew of threads on how to get Bs back to A, and As back to B. I'll go do that as soon as I figure out which are the A roms.
So, the newbie question I have is : How do I know which roms are PW10A1 and which roms are PW10B1?
Also, are there any other (public) kitchens out there? I can't get to the one on yorch.net.
Finally, when I do ever get down to setting up my own private kitchen, would it be possible to directly modify the base ROM, and change B roms to A? (ie: A.30.09 ENG becomes a PW101A1 rom, and settings-phone-band would show 900/1800 instead? or at least hide that menu item?)
There is no connection between the ROM version and the device type .. you can use any ROM with A or B device ... However, with A devices, you should never touch the band selector found in 4.01.xx ROMs as it was released by T-mobile for US regions (900/1900) ... but it works perfectly for 900/1800 as long as you have the proper RSU.
In general, always refer to the rear sticker to get the device type and forget what's written in the device info ... of course if the mother board is still the original.
A30.09 should be a very good and stable ROM except its sound bug, that's why I consider 4.01.00 is the 2nd best for now.
These are very good kitchens:

A30.09 doesn't have a band selector as it has auto band switching interface with the RSU, and with your own kitchen I dont' think you will be able to modify such basic feature like the band selector ... you can barely add some addtional s/w to the ROM space ... which doesn't justify building your kitchen for just changing the device type displayed.
Good luck ...

I need Australian ROM Update???? HELP PLEASE!

Hi All
I have original Australian O2 ROM:
ROM Version: 1.66.00WWE
ROM Date: 02/20/04
Radio Version: 1.08.00
Protocol Version: 1337.18
ExtROM Version: 1.66.165
I also use the O2 Bluetooth head set which I would also like to keep using (I've noticed a few people having issues with some ROM upgrade versions)
Please could someone send me a link where I can download the most stable/updated ROM for my Australian XDA II.
Sorry for asking for links but I am so confused when trying to search for this, I never know what one to use and there are so many around.
I would also like to (IF POSSIBLE) get an upgrade ROM that is automated like O2 original ROM's, one EXE that extracts and does it all for you... no commands or lots of text to read though and try and work out how to do it all....
MANY THANKS!!!!!
Hope someone can help me out!

Does any one have any links on a stable Australian O2 XDA II automated ROM? :?:

Best thing would be to download the UK one for Xda II, hack the device_ID on yours to make it look like a UK one.,,,,,
Thanks for the reply Southern_Man.
Does the UK one have the settings and profiles for Telstra Settings and all. Eg. When you do a hard reset it askes you to select your phone provider to set up the settings for that provider. I would have though it would have only had UK telco's as mine only seems to have Australian ones?
Does any one else have an easy upgrade path for the O2 XDAII for either Win2003 or Win2003SE... but I am looking for a stable version where every thing works that should... EG. Alarms, Bluetooth headset, Bluetooth GPS, Phone...etc..etc
Many thanks guys!

You're right, it only has the O2 UK settings. But imate have published a list of config cabs for most carriers which you can download and use.
Read the site, update your xda ii, open the extended rom (bit like a small hard disk) and load your own settings in.
You'll get a great deal of satisfaction, and a new way of using your gadget...
Hi Southern_Man
Thanks oncea again for the fast reply.
This version you are talking about I'm asuming it is Win2003 (same as the one I have currently?) is ther much diference that you know of?
Also where can I download all the required software (Rom, ID changer, Config Cabs..etc..etc) and instructions on how to get it all done?
In your opinion do you think it's worth the effort (as it is the same OS version? I am unsure what they have fixed etc..etc)
Thanks once again for your efforts.. Sorry I'm just not into the pocketPC stuff as much at the moment and I use it every day so don't want to stuff any thing up... want to double and triple check before I do any thing

ROM Upgrade
Downloaded the UK version and upgraded to 1.72.181 with no problems. Has been working fine and solved the SMS problem but still have Notes that won't open.
With the download all I needed to do was input the Imei number and it downloaded fine. Got it from the UK XDA site.
On flashing it did report one problem and then suggested that I disconnect, reconnect the device and try again. That was successful.
I can recommend this for anyone in Australia so far. The configuration to GPRS is different as autoconfig is removed but that was pretty simple really.
Also got the application updates from the site and found the voice dialler to be great so far. Fax facility not much use unless you're happy to pay all the fees to optus for the service.
Will consider the extended ROM upgrade to higher versions to see if I can solve the notes problem or may use the ROM unlocker to copy another file from an uncorrupted device.
Telstra config
The UK version was easily able to sort out the optus stuff and search for the network. I'm pretty sure it will do the telstra stuff no probs. Thats version 1.72.181 I'll check it right now to see although I don't have a telstra sim card....No Problems! Go to phone , options, network, click on manual selection, it will then search for all available networks and will pick up optus, telstra and vodaphone AU with no problems. No point in stuffing around with all the technical stuff!
Hi fairchiro
Thanks for the reply.
I have just tried to download the updates but it says my IME number is not valid or has already been registerd? I have registered it on MyXDA.com when I purchased the phone a few years ago, could this be my problem?
Do you know where else I can get a copy of this ROM? Also what is the Extended ROM update do? I though the updates updated every thing? (Eg. Radio, Extended, Rom...etc..etc) If not is there a copy of the ROM that updates all software on the PDA?
Also does any one know what is diferent between the UK and Australian version I am currently running?
I have original Australian O2 ROM:
ROM Version: 1.66.00WWE
ROM Date: 02/20/04
Radio Version: 1.08.00
Protocol Version: 1337.18
ExtROM Version: 1.66.165
Is there much point is just upgrading the ROM version if the others are also not updated?
Does this update fix or have a better battery life (when using bluetooth for example?)
Many thanks once again!

Hi Guys, also been reading around I'm not too sure what the diferences are between the two versions (Eg. Version I have and the UK updated version)...
Would it be better for me looking at upgrading to Win2003SE as there seems to be a few more features it offers? If so what is the best and esiest upgrade path to take... and the most stable (stability is what I am looking for!)
Cheers

Microsoft seem to have a fairly consistent model, whereby it takes them 3-4 attempts to release a decent build of anything. AKU2 is their 3rd go at WM2003SE, and is actually pretty good. Fast, good battery and so on. Worth it for speed and stability.
When they are at AKU2 on Magneto, supposedly in the new year, then all those Windows Mobile 5 devices will be worth looking at (and cheaper too)
ROM Upgrades
Hi Fudgebum....sorry, bottom.
I don't think that the previous registration of your IMEI at myxda will be a problem because mine was registered there also.
The 1.72.181 upgrade will update your ROM, radio, and Extended ROM all at the same time.
Don't quote me on this but, I get the understanding that the extended ROM is one that is not quite essential to the basic running of the PDA. In other words you can play with it so that certain programs are included and certain ones are not. Hey but I'm still learning about all this stuff too. In this forum lots of guys, especially "zero" or is it "extremezero" or similar, seem to cook up their own versions of the extended ROM for personalizing aspects of the pda operation and available applications.
If you want to send me a personal message (see PM's above) then I can post you a cd with the ROM update on it or you should be able to download it at the UK site . Can't understand why you can't as long as you can input an IMEI. :?
Good Luck

Please check my intended upgrade...

OK...from the beginning...
I managed to get an o2 xda 2,it is the first time I have ever seen a pda up close let alone owned one!!
The details for the device are:-
Model No: PH10B
Rom Ver: 1.03.00 usa
Rom Date: 09/24/03
Radio Ver: 1.05.12
Protocol Ver: 1337.12
Microsoft Pocket PC Ver: 420.1081 (Build 13100)
At present locked to O2 UK (I am in UK)
I want to primarily use this with Tomtom in the car.I installed TT 5.021 ok but could not get it (TT) to connect with my Holux slim.I guess that the pda is pretty much as was original,so could maybe benefit from an upgrade.
A member over at AVForums suggested this Forum,so here I am .
As you may appreciate, there are many very long threads on here, and after awhile,it makes my brain ache ,but I hope I have gleaned what is necessary.
Anyway,my proposed upgrade:-
1. Unlock with OLD xda2unlock
2. TOFCLOCK HIMA WM6 AKU.0.7.0
CE OS 5.2.1908 (Build 18508.0.7.0)
Radio Ver: 1.17 at the same time (put in same folder as Rom I believe)
3. Run Patched/Fixed/Updates
Fixed MMS Client or Patch If Already Installed:
Arcsoft MMS Client 4.2.8.1 (new Install)
http://rapidshare.com/files/54673552....8.1_Fixed.rar
MMS Patch1 (If you already install the packed one with picture issues, install and softreset)
http://rapidshare.com/files/54672723/MMS_Patch1.rar
New File Explorer (WM6 Explorer by dutty)
http://rapidshare.com/files/54679305/FileExplorer.rar
4. Install any Add-0ns.
Is this all I need to do?
Any particular order,or in the order I have written?
I didn't find much about bootloaders...does that need to be updated, and if so how and which one where?
If I have misunderstood, and there is more to do,points to watch out for or missed please advise...any and all help is much appreciated.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this...
.
not sure about your gps but if it's wired all you have to do may be
to disable auto recieve beams to free out that com port
there is no general issue with older roms and gps's
could just be a setup issue
Thanks,already done that.It's a B/Tooth Holux GPSlim 236,not wired.

Vodafone HTC TP Radios (+some other stuff)

Ok, i suspect this has been asked a million times before.... Yeah i've been to raph wiki... Just want to clarify things, its too much info and i want to know if i get everything right. Please help me get my head around this if you can.
My phone:
Vodafone HTC Touch Pro (factory not SIM-locked)
CE OS build 19945.1.2.3
Rom version: 1.90.161.5 WWE
Date: 09/03/08
Radio: 1.02.25.19
Protocol: 52.33.25.17U
I have HardSPL'ed my phone successfully. If i want to flash another RAPHAEL radio i dont need to do anything else. "Security" unlock is only needed if non-raphael radios need to be flashed (such as diamond?)?
Do i replace current Vodafone rom (besides radio)? Is there a good reason to do so ? If so, which one and why ? Not interested in software overload, but prefer to have Touch Flo and as much speed as possible. I have read that t-mobile Vario4 roms are extremely bad, cant say this about Voda, but what do i know - i only owned HTC s710 (Orange SPV E650) for a year or 2. (flashed it to WM6.1 myself, came with 6.0)
How do i unload contacts, software, games off the s710 to my TP ?
So much questions. Please bear with me.
Thanks for your time.
To answer your rom question, the newest roms are version 5.05 instead of 1.90. I have an unbranded tp so I just installed the official 5.05 and no custom one. But if you're looking for speed you should check out energyrom 2.0 I guess. Your contacts can be easily ported from s710 to tp using outlook. Use activesync to sync your 710 contacts with outlook and then sync outlook with your tp. I've done the same with my old s620 and it's the only way I've found that works. There are programs in which you can backup you contacts (such as sktools) but from smartphone to ppc it doesn't seem to work.

Telstra + Hima PPC Phone Edition

Hey all, first post here, and I apologise if this has been asked before.
I was recently given a i-Mate Pocket PC Phone Edition (Himalaya) PH10B
Now here in Australia we have our huge semi government run telco Telstra, well they like to brand things for themselves and make it difficult for those of us using the cheaper and less expensive competition by branding and completely configuring everything in their image.
Though the phone is unlocked, I've found that if I want to update I have to use the special ROM upgrade located here:
https://www.imate.com/Support_DeviceSupport.aspx?key=05848f0f-a523-4f33-8c33-6ef5e10cd5ad&cmd=roms
Bah, I don't want it, I want to be able to do things with my PPC, like say use an XDAII ROM to upgrade to Windows Mobile 5 or even 6, but as I'm a big noob to anything other than Symbion OS I'm kinda stuck for how to go about blasting away the Telstra BS and properly updating and configuring MY phone for how I want it.
So, Has anyone found a way to do this? Is it possible? I've tried some of the tools, but nothing wanted to work. Any ideas?
Cheers, and thanks in advance.
Oh, thought I'd add some specs to assist:
ROM Version: 1.52.00WWE
ROM Date: 10/23/03
Radio Version: 1.10.00
Protocol Version: 1337.18
ExtROM Version: 1.72.871
