Hello I have just purchased an 02 xda not the 2 or anything just the xda. The reason behind buying it was to have a cheap sat nav kit as I'm not very rich unfortunately.
However, I dont have the first clue as to how to set it up, the guy gave me tom tom 3 on an mmc card. Said I need a gps receiver or something like that. I am willing to buy one but dont know which one and why and whats compatible.
Also someone else said I can run it off gprs but after reading up that doesnt seem to be very accurate so want to go gps. Do I need a gps antenna? Not sure what that is but told I need it if I dont have one.
Could someone please run me through the procedure of how to set it up as a sat nav. I'm more than happy just to use it as tom tom 3, but want to know what additional kit do I need.

Dig more on internet about that. You'll find step-by-steps.
First thing you need is a GPS receiver (cable or bluetooth one).
Just ask the seller if it works with XDA I. (Cable connector).
As far as I know XDA I has bluetooth ? You can but bluetooth GPS then (more expensive, but wireless and works with any BT palmtop for sure).
The rest of configuration is easy and is describes in TomTom help or/and GPS manual.

Hello, thanks for the reply. Did do some advice and done some digging about, so now where I stand is, I have ordered a gps receiver with the correct cable for my XDa. It surprisingly doesnt have bluetooth so couldnt get the bluetooth receiver.
Have got tom tom 5 navigation software, now should be ready to go.

Hope you have ordered a splitter cable, as the receiver needs power supply. TomTom Navigator 5 will work fine on a XDA I. Use only a headset when you'r on a motorbike, it is sufficient for navigation.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any tutorials/read-ups available for setting up GPS for the XDA?
I'm aware of the software available ( Tom Tom etc) but am unsure if I need further equipment/cables etc.
I don't want to hook up to the car, just to be used handheld as I roam the streets! (Errrrrr....!)

You might it find it very ungainly, the xda needs a cable device which also needs power, so I think you need to look for a different solution unless you are willing to carry the gps, cable, power source, xda etc. For in car it is fine, any questions about gps with xda I will do my best to answer.
i need a map program for my BA. i am quite a noob with this stuff since this is my first ppc. so i am looking for something user friendly but does not skimp too much on the usefulness of the program. i hear about tom tom a bit dunno if it is great but what about pocket streets' by ms or any of the others out there. i just want a mapping program no gps unit yet.
I am using pocket map navigator and love it. with our without gps it works great

I have the wallaby(3.04v), himalaya(wm2k5 v 150i.64), BA(V140) and Magician v.112.
I am keen to use any one of my above htc device for satellite gps navigation.
I am new and have never use gps satellite navigation on any of my htc products before.
can someone please advise which hardware n software should I purchase to have the gps navigation which has VOICE ACTIVATED PROMPT in directions.

Tomtom would probably be your best bet, a cheap wired gps will work just fine and keep both the pda and the gps powered in car. If you want to use it outside the vehicle then the tomtom bluetooth gps is a good bet.

Yes you can buy a complete package or just the hardware/software, voice prompts included. There are many addons such as post code search, speed camera alerts, online traffic info etc. Also many overlays of points of interest, navigate from contacts/address book.
Just a thought, what country will you be driving in??

i'd recommend the following bluetooth GPS receiver, it can operate from the glovebox and has a very good battery life.
Globalsat BT-338 Sirf Star III 20 Channel Bluetooth GPS receiver
i myself have the tomtom receiver but my friend bought this one and i'd buy it if purchasing again.
it will work with any mapping software that requires a gps receiver and i recommend tomtom sofwtware for ease of use, can be used on 2d or 3d mode.
I've been pretty happy with DeLorme's Pocket Street Atlas -- it's about half the price of TomTom.

im in the market or one too and i don't know squat about them. i'm still learning. but what i do know is, everyone loves tomtom software for gps devices. i think i'm going to go that route.
Head over to semsons.com or buygpsnow.com -- they offer bundles of GPS software & hardware. WRT hardware, pretty much any unit using the Sirf III chipset will work well. I use the Globalsat BT338 -- it has a long battery life, and I can get a decent signal indoors.
I agree with 3waygeek, The two aforementioned websites have nice offerings. I use a Holux GPSlim 236 with my Wizard. No issues, decent battery life good signal strength

Cellink BTG-7000 Bluetooth GPS
I recently purchased the Cellink BTG-7000 Bluetooth GPS (view product website) to use with my MDA. I got it at geeks.com for $35. It works quite well. I tried alot of freebie GPS apps, and I stuck with Google mobile maps (view details) program.
The device tracks up to 12 satellites at once, and I've seen it go that high. There is no need for an additional antenna, although it does come with the option to plug one in.
The only downside with Google mobile maps is that the maps are downloaded on-the-fly over the GPRS connection. It can lag sometimes, and won't work if you have no signal. But it is a plus that it doesn't take up a ton of strorage space with image maps.
I have everything all working fine...
I have successfully used four different bluetooth GPS units, so really don't worry about which on eyou get... Currently I'm using A Holox BT321 bought on Ebay for 30GBP - turns itself off when not in use, and useds the same mini-usb charger as the wizard too.
As for software, TomTom does everything you need. I've had it both versions 5 and 6 working on both WM5 and all flavours of WM6 around.
My version of tomtom was 'located' -try Googling for a torrent (or contact me direct)!
I've also tried destinator, but that was garbage, and although CoPilot has been recommended, I can't justify the expense when TomTom works fine.
Tip: To make TomTom work with your GPS...
Pair up the GPS, then in the bluetooth settings, add a port, outbound, as COM6 unsecured. Then in TomTom GPS settings, just select 'Other Bluetooth Reciever' and port COM6.... simple.
GPS and Navigation Program
Sorry if this is too late, however I have only just joined the website.
I too have used a Holux GPSlim 236 with my imate K-Jam (Wizard) as per 'anothersmith' and when I dropped that I went for the i-Blue 737 which has a wonderful feature of going into a standby mode if you walk away without turing it off until a device that is synced with it comes back into range. Not just any bluetooth device. I also found the i-Blue to be a little more accurate with Navigation compared with Magellan and Garmin designated GPS units.
Paired with this I also use TTN6 which I find to be probably the most accurate maps for my area (Nth Qld, Australia) and I am very happy with the program after using Destinator PN and having seen Co-Pilot. It also one of the best supported products I have found when searching the net. TTN6 does take a littel time to start with the 200MHz processor, however it is worth the wait.
I have had other mates join my thinking after seeing my set-up. I hope this little insight gives anybody else ideas if you are looking at using your device to assit make your life easier.

Recently upgraded my Softbank device with a new ROM. Now I am looking for a Bluetooth GPS Receiver I can buy local. Dont speak much of the lingo yet but can certainly find BicCamera ... Anyone using a device they are finding works fairly well in this environment?

most BT GPS don't work so well in Tokyo due to the number of skyscrapers. the GPS signals get bounced around too much making it hard for the device to triangulate. you might want to ask around locally what works better.

^ yeah, same boat. I have a bad gas cap so my check engine light is CONSTANTLY on. Now I just ignore it because "I KNOW" that's the cause... heaven forbid something else be wrong with my car and I've just ignored it. Would be especially nice since this app also lets you CLEAR THE CODE (no more check engine light).
Really need to find a good/cheap BT adapter that will work with this app!!!
I'm interested in this too. The only thing I wonder about is the Bluetooth connection. There was a thread somewhere about wii remotes not working with some app on the market and the explanation was the Bluetooth version we have (3.0) would require considerable changes to make it work. I don't want to fork out the cash only to find out they are not compatible. I read that thread weeks ago, so I don't remember the particulars. Hopefully, someone will chime in that has already tried it.
Hmm. I've had no issues connecting with a few bluetooth devices... Never really had that concern, hope there are no issues. Wonder if you could return an item for that...

Bluetooth 3.0 Compatible Controllers for Gaming?
I just got the cheapest BT ODB2 dongle from eBay (<$30), and it works fine on my 2010 Silverado HD. The throttle position sensor didn't seem to work right (my foot does just as well ), but the boost sensor seems like it may have...? I only drove around the block - we'll see when I'm getting on the freeway tomorrow. Being a new truck, there are no SES lights for me to check. Also, my truck has BT for the stereo, and there didn't seem to be any issues being connected to both.
In short, it works just fine for what it seems to be for (simple guages & such).

A new $10 gas cap and a $25 AutoZone code reader would probably be cheaper and easier.
The gas caps for my car go bad every few months, it's just a design flaw I think. With all of the additional features the app offers + the cool factor, I think its worth it. May give one of the cheaper cables a try.

I've been waiting for one of these to come out for some time. I have had a BT adapter in my car, as I used it with my Nokia N810 (using a software called CARMAN). It has some +/-'s, but this new software (Torque) is simply amazing.
Ended up using the free version, but purchased as soon as I got home. Will do some more testing and report soon.
I think it is pretty cool app, even though I can scan the codes for free at an AutoZone, but if you mod your car the app will come handy when you need to setup your CAI to by-pass ECU, etc.
I've been playing around with this app using a $30 Chinese bt dongle from ebay. It works great, you don't need the $100 one unless you plan to use it for pro level diagnostics (which some people do). It's got a ton of cool functions, the least of which is being able to read and reset fault codes. But I use for that too. It may not be able to read all the OBD output from your car, for example, it won't list the turbo boost for my Volvo, but that is vehicle dependent. Check out the forums on the dev's site; lots of good info there. Btw, I'm using the paid version.

Wow the developer needs to get on board with CobbTuning for the import enthusiast guys. This tool would be awesome to flash tuned performance maps. My accessport cost me $600+. Pretty awesome. Shame you couldn't just use the sensor to the micro USB.

wow, this is a great idea. i have not tried it yet, as i dont have an obdII to BT, but this looks awesome.
On a side note, as i dont have the obdII/BT connection yet, I do have an OBDII to USB cable. Can this or another app use that? I guess I would have to get a USB to microUSB adaptor to plug into phone.... how about any computer programs that will use the ODB to USB adaptor to monitor car data/engine lights?

The cheap chinese OBD II don't work with all vehicles so be wary about buying one of the these. I bought one for $25 on ebay and they don't connect with Ford's interface, however it did connect to my Dodge truck.
