Headset connectors - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Accessories

Hi All
I was looking at the headset connector of my XDA2s and notices the 4 connector pins that surround the headphone socket. Any one know what these pins are for....I am hoping it's for some kind of remote control headset for media player / mp3 playback control

tired of car cradles without audio out?

I'm sick of trying to find a car cradle that has audio out, ps2 and 12v for charging!
Why is it that no manufacturers of xda cradles ever realise that some of us want to listen to mp3's in the car and have tom-tom voice prompts coming through our stereos!
Being right handed, I want my PDA on the right of the steering wheel, so I can operate Tom-Tom before setting off, or change tracks on media player. I did look at the Brodit pro-clip solutions, but they all seem to be for the centre console for my car (a citroen AX)
I've discovered that the driver's side vent mount has a removable panel, which means I can easily mount a small piece of wood (effectively a small flat shelf) for mounting a cradle, this also brings the device out of the reflective glare zone in the windscreen during night driving. It also means all I need is a standard xda iis cradle to do this mod.
So with much careful thought I've decided to do the following:

In theory, this project has 3 key issues to resolve...
1) Powering the cradle and Bluetooth GPS
Three options seem to be available...
a) The hobbyist approach...I've seen various "car-kit diagrams" like this one,

but to be honest I have no pcb making experience.
b) 12V to 5dc cigarette socket transformer adapter to provide power to the cradle, and perhaps to the bluetooth gps for charging. This should be easier to achieve!
Anyone have any links for low cost solutions for this, obviously it would need to convert 12VDC to 5DC at 2-3Amps
c) As the xdaiis usb cradle charges directly from a USB power source, this seems an Ideal solution!

2) Audio out: THE MAIN PROBLEM!
Ideally I just want to get in the car and cradle the device, no other connections being required.
Therefore I need to modify the xdaiis cradle for audio output...
Ideally, the feed for the audio should come from the bottom connector, when the xdaiis is cradled.
With this in mind, I found this article about dismantling an xdaii cradle...

If you look at the images on this web-page, you can see that - at the back of the cradle on the opposite side of the usb cable from the 5volt dc input is what looks like a pcb pinout for a headphone connector...
is this right? Can anyone confirm this.
Would it be possible to solder a connector onto here (assuming the solder pads connect to the 22pin connector!)
As this would be far easier than mucking about trying to solder onto the miniscule pins on the bottom of the 22pin connector on the cradle as it goes into the pcb!
If it works of course!
b) modify a headset
I did consider modifying an old wallaby headset to wire it into my car amp

I have also tried a friend's xda II headset on the IIs and yet again they have changed the pinout! The audio connections are once again totally different, resulting in the "echoing" effect when one headset is plugged in from the other device. This means that the audio ground pin has changed since the xdaII headphone socket schematic! This difference is also confirmed by looking at the handsfree "pod" on both headsets... The IIs has one button for answering a call, where the II has two buttons, wether it is the same as the XDA1 (Wallaby) remains to be seen....
c) buy a PDA2k 3.5mm headphone adapter...

Then use a standard lead to connect it to the hi-fi amp in the car.
3) charging the TOM TOM BLUETOOTH GPS
I'm wary of putting anything other than the recommended voltage (5VDC) into this device, so the best option is to supply power using (1b) or (1c) above, perhaps cutting into the supplied RJ cable to minijack psu to hook it up from the same supply.
While I'm on the subject of the bluetooth gps.... Does anyone knopw how long does the tom tom bluetooth gps work with a full charge?
Does it vary based on an active connection, or is it the same as on standby?
Do I need to power it in the car at all? Can I not just charge it as required at home? There doesnt seem to be much literature about the Bluetooth GPS reciever's battery life in the box!
Anyone care to comment on these ideas?

I think the fact that no-one makes a cradle which provides audio-out through the bottom connector of the XDA2 is because the XDA2 doesn't provide this possibility. It's not the car-kit manufacturers' fault. Blame HTC.
However, I could be wrong... :roll:
My solution: I bought one of these XDA2 mounts ( http://www.pdamods.com/proddetail.asp?prod=A11XDA2MNT&cat=23 ) which works really well. It charges the phone and my TomTom BT GPS. To achieve audio-out I plan (eventually) to use the XDA2's headphone socket by drilling a hole through the mount's base in the right spot and using a 2.5mm jack adapted to play through the car stereo. Not an ideal solution, but surely must be simpler for you than trying to build a reliable (and safe!) 12V -> 5V convertor and butchering a spare XDA2 desktop cradle?

I have found someone that makes a DSP handsfree set with Audio on your car speakers, separate mic and all with the bottom connector. It even delivers laptopconnection for Dialup and GPS.

MDA III - Important Information:
Replace file "Wavedev.dll" on your MDA III and restart the system. Audio response now can be listen via loudspeaker.

FYI, It appears that the replacement WaveDev.dll file offered by the car Kit company causes bluetooth headsets to stop working at all (not just in the car).

That's what I'm looking for. Have you found anywhere to actually buy them? I looked over the whole site.
How about this alternative cradle. I bought one for my XDAIIs and it works perfectly. Got one for the birds XDA2 and that work great too.
It provides power to either a wired GPS or charges a bluetooth GPS, it has a built in speaker and a cables provided to run from the XDA's headphone socket to the cradle. THIS THING IS LOUD!
One word of caution, the speakers in my car are shielded so I don't get that warning noise from them that I am about to get a call or text. The speaker on the cradle is NOT shielded and so you do get interference when you are about to get a call or switch cells.

i thought about using my 6601 as an MP3 player in my car as well. but since my eclipse cdplayer does mp3, i abandoned the idea
option 1: cut up a 2.5mm headset and plug it into the top of the device
pros: cheap and effective
cons: have to plug it in every time (and unplug it to take a call)
option 2: pair a bluetooth headset with the device, crack it open and wire the speaker to a preamp
pros: wireless
cons: ruin an otherwise good bt headset, music would be in mono

DIY Car kit for Blueangel? Possibly?

For those of you who have grounded pin 19 to get sound out via bottom connector, have you seen this site which sells proper car kits for the blueangel

I have just finished my work.
I have grounded pin 19 via 10K resistor and then installed wavedev.dll from the site http://www.thb.de
Now it works well. Internal mic and audio are switched to pins 1 (mic) and 3,4 (audio). I have connected the MDA III via bottom connector to my motorcycle intercom and now I can hear all instructions of my navigate software as well I can telefone with my helmet on.
I had tried it before without THBs wavedev.dll and it was only possible to use the telefone function. MP3s and navigate instructions couldn't been heard.

yes, the pin layout seems to be the same as XDAII, MDAII (himalaya).

I groudeed it via 10 resitor to pins 16,17,18.
But without the wavedev.dll from http://www.thb-service.de/download/MDAIII/Wavedev.dll there is no chance to get audio output from mediaplayer ond so on.

I've tryed using this wavedev.dll to see if i've got any luck sending audio (mediaplayer. tom tom etc) to my bluetooth headset but doesn't work... Just tought it could be something with routing the audio...

I have come across a thread which described a registry hack to output tomtom GPS Sounds etc to a bluetooth headset, but i cannot find it again, but this thread in another forum backs my thinking up http://www.mtekk.com.au/forums/viewtopic.php?p=24624 you should root around the google, it is only on one of three sites, this one, MoDaCo or Mtekk but i know its possible at least

When you unhook the bottom connector from your phone, does the audio go back to the internal speaker and microphone?
Also, when the bottom connector is plugged in, what takes precedence, your bluetooth headset or the bottom connector's audio?
Last, if I paid you could you make me a cable that would have the connector that would feed to :
3.5mm Microphone Plug
3.5mm Stereo Audio Plug
Radio Mute Plug (pin 12 supposedly?)
Power?
My vehicle's radio supports RCA feeds and Radio Mutes, and I would LOVE to get this hooked up...
Lastly, is it possible to pipe out video through the connector? (Just thinking about the XDAII backpack...)

Yes internal speeker and mic are turned on when the connector is unhooked.

Bluetooth headset is preferred, the external speeker works but microfone is only used from bluetooth headset.

The answer is no. I'm glad, that my connector works. But until this I had disturbed 3 connectors because of my very small experiences in soldering.
I think that every TV or radio store could help you when you tell them the pin layout and how to groud the pin 19.

Questions on Schematic

when grounding the Car_ON (pin 19) through a 10k resistor, which pin did you ground it to? Was it 15, 16, or 17? The reason I ask is that it seems that incoming power ground needs to be on 15, 17, and 18, so does that mean that the CAR_ON needs to be sent to pin 16?

The Cable and the resistor I got in a tv shop.
One pole of the resitor you have to solder to pin 19 and the other pole must be soldered to pin 16, 17 and 18.
Don't use pin 15 for ground from the car charger. It's only used for USB cable.

Yes, I saw that you soldered pin 19 to pins 16, 17, and 18, but the problem is that the positive lead ties into 19, 21, and 22...
So, with that being said, i have two questions... Did you tie power into your setup? If so, then...
1. Do I tie in the positive lead from the car charger into pin 19 at all because it's going to be grounded out?
2. Do I tie in the negative lead from the car charger into all the pins, or only the ones that aren't being tied back into 19?
If you have an example that you used the worked that would be STUPENDOUS... I feel like I just need to have this quesiton answered and I'll be good to go...

There you can see that pins 20,21,22 are power+ and pins 16,17,18 are ground. Now connect now solder a 10k resitor between pin 19 and (16,17,18) and it should work.
But only if you download the wavedev.dll from www.thb.de

last question...
when you were wiring yours up, did you jump 19 right at the connector or did you run everything back to the opposite end of the cable and then run the 10k resistor?
Also, did you tie in the car charger's negative and all the negative pins together at the other end of the cable, or did you run one negative wire to the connector and then split it there? same for the positive...

Hi,
the resistant fits in the connector, so there is no need to use an extra wire to connect it outside to the ground.
I connected the the pins together with solder in the connector.

9100 2.5 audio pin out

whether I am "search" disabled or there is no info about audio 2.5 jack pin outs.
will somebody give a link or provide connection diagram for mic, answer/mute button and audio outputs?
my aim is to make my own cable to connect the pda to car stereo to listen mp3s and also place a remote mic and switch somewhere in the car.

thanks a lot to whom gave me info about this topic. Here is what I have done today;
I bought an after market 2,5mm stereo headphones with mic and switch. it was 5 YTL equvalent around $3,5. I had the chance to try it with my qtek9100, but there was very poor sound level and quality, I didnt even try the mic. Actually I bought it just to get one 2.5mm 4 conductor jack.
I tried to make a drawing how the connections were, marked as "before". It is so wierd wiring that I have no idea which kind of device uses this kind of connection.
After modification, as you will see, instead of soldering the existing ear pieces, I soldered a female 3,5mm jack, so that I can connect whether a stereo headphones to use it as hands free or a casette adapter to use with car stereo and listen to mp3s(which in this case, when I receive or make a call, it will mute the music and give other sides voice to car speakers). Ive tested both possibilities and it works quite fine.
I hope this helps to ones that are willing to make this kind of adapter themselves.

I want to give a more precise definition to jack pinouts.
AFAIK pin 4 - left channel, 3 - right. So U have reversed stereo sound or wrong picture female connector.

extusb changes?

I have a 3 in 1 adaptor in my car, charging, outputting audio and inputting voice.
This setup worked fine on my Kaiser. With the HD I plug it in and get a "Headset not supported error message". The audio will also not output through the extusb, and will only come out the 3.5mm jack at the top I believe.
So what makes mine different to the below? I can only guess that the pinouts differ for some reason? Has anyone seen a pinout diagram for the HD that I can compare with the Kaiser?
Pinout will not help. HTC simply is not using the audio pins of the ExtUSB on HD.
Any (eBay) vendor you see claiming their ExtUSB-[fill in your audio device] is compatible with HD is not well informed. (or does not want to be well informed)

It was indeed eBay, ive just realised I didnt actually supply the link when I referred to "the below", so well done on filling in the gaps!
Thats a pain in the arse. So the 3.5mm jack at the top can accept incoming voice (from the mic), as well as output audio? In which case I can't see a way of making any kind of car kit work for the HD...

i use a normal audio jack out into my car stereo audio inputs, i get calls/audio/satnav instructions etc through the car speakers (obviously have the stereo on aux so dont get the radio at the same time
the inbuilt mic seems to be adequate for both calls and voice command
if not and you are ok at soldering tiny wires etc, then you could do what i did with my old charmer......
i took the wired headset, cracked open the mic/button press> attached a 1/4" audio socket to the headfone terminals on the PCB and a car mic (£3 if you shop around) to the mic PCB terminals. tucked all the wires away behind trim etc and had a custom built integrated hands free car kit (at the time i didnt have audio in on car stereo so adapted some el cheapo "ipod" speakers as well)

Hi there, I have a 2nd hand Blue Angel, and after looking continuously over the pda could not find the headphones jack, as the auctions I looked at said 2.5mm > 3.5mm, so finally found out i'm missing the lil jack thingy.
Am looking to purchase the jack for the bottom of the pda

Question: is there a funny usb little plug that goes in the bottom (into this plugs your headphones)? well this what i need.

IIRC, the headphone socket is on the top left of the BA. It'll have a little rubber dust cover on top of it.
It isn't a standard 3.5mm socket though, so either get the smaller (2.5mm?) headset or get an adaptor so you can use 3.5mm headphones.

yes, it is 2.5 mm, since mine broke the other day i also researched a bit and found out that adaptors don't really work, we had this discussion in this forum before, the connector layout of the ba's plug is not standard, so if you take an adaptor, you probably won't have the full comfort of an original headset, like proper stereo, ptt..., maybe the mic won't even work. there are also a lot of other branded headsets out there, that seem to have 2.5mm and 4 connectors. so always test handsfrees before buying
HA! great stuff, it was hiding lol, I swear I went over the device numerous times searching, then just assumed there was an adaptor for the bottom (where the dock plugs into- the usb type thing).
