XDA with tomtom5 doesn't recognise GPS device - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

I have had tomtom 5.00 installed on my XDA, and bought a GPS mouse type receiver which is attached by cable. Tomtom5 doesn't appear to recognise the receiver and displays "No GPS device" whether it is plugged in or not. The receiver appeared to behave as expected when positioned in the car and plugged in to the lighter socket - green flashing light for a couple of minutes until it fixed its position. The manual is a very poor chinese translation and of little use to me. I would really appreciate some help on getting this to work.

Have you disabled beam?
Stefan

I have disabled the infra-red beam now and soft reset; but it still doesn't work. Other info/queries:
I couldn't instal the receiver driver (only a chinese version existed) but I was told this shouldn't be needed as tomtom5 should recognise the device without this. Is this correct?
The receiver needs to be plugged in to the car lighter socket to work (for power) but should the XDA recognise it if not connected to the power source?
Settings: baud rate 4800, connection serial cable on COM1.
Many thanks for your help so far.

TomTom should be able to use the GPS Device without a driver as long it is NMEA compatible.

The receiver needs power to be recognised afaik.

This should be ok i think. Perhaps have a look at the TomTom website if your GPS-Device is supported.

Hi there,
First, it would help if you told us what model of GPS you're using.

Well that's a bit limited. Try 38400 for the baud rate, and maybe COM2 (as I think I used that back in my Wallaby days ...)
Good luck !

XDA with tomtom5 doesn't recognise GPS device - it does now!
Changed the baud rate to 9600 and bingo! I had previously reduced this to 4800 when trying various fixes to get the GPS working. It looks as though the original problem was the infra-red not being disabled. Brilliant system to use.
Thanks to those who helped

what gps receiver do u use?
i'm using an HOLUX GM 210 U and have the same problem
anybody can say me something?

Hi stefan
i download a new rom from the kitchen but now i cant disable the beams every time i try it is always enabled
Any help would be greatley appreciated

Defective Serial Port???

Hi People,
I hope someone can help me solve a problem connecting a GPS receiver to my MDA. I'm working with Tom Tom and when I try to access the receiver on COM 1 I get an error "cannot connect to COM1, port does not exist". When the reciever is connected to a friends unit it works fine.
I see a couple of possibilities:
The serial port is broken.
Dirver problem. (I don't think so because I've updated to the newest ROM from T-Mobile)
Tom Tom problem (unlikely because I installed a different software with similar result).
Has anyone had similar problems? If the serial I/O buffer is def. can it be changed? I'm a technician but I don't have any circuit diagrams.
Is there any other way of hooking a serial receiver up to the MDA other then the serial port? TT offers the options Ser to usb, ser to ird, ser to com2 and com9. none of these work directly with the serial cable.
Thanks for any help I get.

Go to settings/connections/beams, make sure beams is unchecked. Also if you have an external keyboard driver present you need to deactivate it.
IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!
Thanks for the tip! Hours of talking to T-Mobile couldn't solve the problem. They suggested having my SIM card checked.
Cheers,
DB
Glad to be of service 8)

TomTom 5 not recognising GPS rcvr

Just got a TomTom5 kit with Bluetooth GPS receiver from PDAMods.com.
Followed the instructions to set everything up, but TomTom still says "No GPS device!".
The XDA seems to connect via BT to the device OK, and the BT active light comes on on the receiver, so I think its maybe connection params.
The only step in setting up the receiver that I couldn't perform was changing the outbound COM port to port 8 in BT Settings as specified in the receiver manual.
I go into Bluetooth Settings.
Select the Services tab.
Select 'Serial Port'' as instructed.
Make sure Enable service is checked, authoriszation required isn't, and Authentication passkey required isn't.
Then I go into the Advanced options to set the ports and I can't edit them...
Any ideas? I need to use this this afternoon - in about and hour and 10 minutes, and have been struggling for 2 hours to get the thing to recognise the receiver...
I've already had to do a hard reset, and lost a load of other stuff off the device, because the Bluetooth setting seemed to get corrupted and i started getting a message about Bluetooth license having expired. That bit is OK now after the hard rest, but the receiver is still not recognised.
In the TomTom prefs I have gone into GPS status and hit the configure button. Selected 'Other Bluetooth GPS'., and hit the ''Bluetooth Serial Port 5" line (which is what the inbound COM port connection is set to).
According to Bluetooth settings my Inbound COM port is 5 and my outbound is 6. The receiver setups says these should be Inbound 5 and outbound 8.
Please please point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
FM
try using cable
In TomTom try using the Other NMEA cable device (or somthing similar) - select the com port and set the baud rate (mine uses 9600 but you may need to try a few settings). I also ensure that I connect the device in Bluetooth manager before starting TomTom.
Hope this helps.

TomTom 5. & BT GPS
Don't tell me you haven't used the "outbound" com port setting .
The inbound/outbound name is nothign to do with data flow, it's whi instigates the connection.... the XDA does, so it's an Outbound connection you need to use.
Try Com6 (or com 8 .... whatever it was)
Once again, xda-dv forums members are stars!
That sorted it..
9600 and selecting the inbound com port (i think it was that one) made the thing spring to life..
now i know where i am going..
cheers cgrillo,
FM
hi
try to make 38000 bps , and remeber to choose com6 on other cable select...
i try it and he cames like a ferrari....eheheh

Is there a quick way to have TOM TOM connect to the GPS Mouse when TOM TOM is started? Currently I have to start blue tooth manager and connect to GPSlim236 manually.
Then run TOMTOM.
Also, in my blue tooth manager my blue device is listed as:
Holux GPSlim236: SPP Slave.
is SPP Slave correct?
same problem as above! but i lose the conecction after about 10 seconds! any ideas? ive searched the whole forum and this is the closest ive come
Hi, my xda mini s only has bluetoth COM ports on port 6 + 7, however tomtom5 only recognises the IR, serial, and COM ports 0, 2, 3, and 9. I have tried the 'Other cable...' thingy, changed the BAUD rate, and generally messed around with it. Any ideas?
btw, i use a globalstat BT-359 receiver (bluetooth)

TomTom 5 and XDA compatibility

Can anyone tell me if TOMTOM 5 is compatible with the XDA?
When i say compatible, i dont mean will it install etc cos ive actually managed that no problem. What i mean is, has ANYONE found a GPS reciever that works with the XDA and TOMTOM 5 ? If so what settings did you use?
I have a RIKALINE GPS reciever, and TOMTOM 5. Ive tried what seems for ever to get the god damn thing working but no matter what settings i use, the TOM TOM 5 software refuses to acknowledge that i have a GPS reciever attached or even a signal.
I know the RIKALINE GPS reciever has a signal since ive watched the procedure it goes through in order to obtain it. I know what BAUD rate the GPS reciever needs, but i dont actually know how its connected to the PDA. Ie COM 9:, Serial Cable on COM1:, Serial on USB or Serial Cable on COM2 ?? I have tried them all but to now success. SO does anyone have a TOM TOM 5 installation guide or some information on what i should try next. Anything anyone can give me will be much appriciated. I really dont want to go back to TOM TOM 3 (which i have had working with all the above equipment)
Thanks in Advance
Hi there
Yes the XDA is fully compatible - but there are also conflicts you need to be aware of.
Go to START/SETTINGS/CONNECTIONS - select "BEAM" option - make sure that the box is UNCHECKED - as the infra red beam conflicts with the receiver!
On the TOMTOM program set the GPS receiver to TOMTOM CABLE GPS & away you go!
Let me know if you still can't get it working.
You'll need "Serial Cable on Com 1" Use Other Cable GPS receiver and set the baud rate and it should work once you've disabled the beam

Having problems connecting BT-R920 receiver with wizard bluetooth

I have a rebadged BT-R920 from semsons and i'm having trouble connecting it to wizard's bluetooth. The wizard recognizes the receiver but doesn't actually connect. a blinking blue light on the receiver should indicate the connection of the bluetooth but yeh nothing. anyways if anyone has this figured out i would appreciate it very much. thanks
in the bluetooth device page, theres a question mark icon and i made sure to use it as serial port.
Dont you need a subscription/service plan to use that?

Ive got a question mark icon near my BT receiver too, but it doesn't affect anything. The blinking blue light just means that the receiver is pumping a bluetooth signal not meaning it's connected though.
In Comm Menu open:
Settings/Bluetooth Settings/COM Ports/New Outgoing Port (use COM7 listed w/ receiver)
COM6 is for Incoming Port(nothing will be listed w/ it)
Open your GPS software and make sure that it lists COM7 as the COM Port, Baud Rate 4800. Happy Trails

Another GPS woe

Hey users,
I decided to upgrade the my xv6800 (VZW) to the 3.35 sprint update with DCD's 3.04 rom/kitchen <-- (I think that's the right terminology.) Everything is working fine except GPS doesn't work at all. I'm not worried about that anymore.
Previous to the upgrade, the stock rom was great at using the bluetooth reciever.
Problem: If it is a problem even. When I go to the program port it defaults to COM4. (Which is ok) But when I go to Hardware Port, it always defaults to (None) and baud rate at 4800. I select COM5 and baud at 4800. (previous to the upgrade, 19200 was awesome.) It's just that when I go back to settings-->External GPS-->Hardware; it always resets back to (None) with a baud @ 4800.
I've set the Bluetooth port COM5 already. (don't know if the serial check should be filled or not)
Any of you all have a plan, that would be great! Thanks for the help in advance.

Why not use the internal GPS? It's available now with your new ROM.
True it does. But I've only got it working once or twice. Not very reliable. I've tried the primer software but that doesn't work either.
Right now Manually configuring bluetooth is pretty much the only way.

Yes, I think you do need to check the serial port. Under the Bluetooth settings\COM Ports I created a port on COM0 rather than COM5. My dad's phone also has subpar internal GPS performance so I've done the same as you to configure an external unit.
Don't worry about the WinMo external GPS settings, and just leave the port to none.
Now, that will enable an external app that can bypass the WinMo GPS managed settings to directly communicate with your bluetooth GPS on its COM port. An external GPS (bluetooth created COM port) seems not to be recognised by VisualGPSce. This does work with Google Maps (Set Manually), TomTom (other Bluetooth receiver), and Garmin XT (Use Bluetooth GPS). Garmin is the only one that can occassionally revert back to the internal GPS after doing its own COM scan when there is a failed bluetooth connection to the external receiver.
Thanks Keystone. I sort of just messed around with it. I will set the port @ port 8 and set the baud to 19200. This has worked.
Yeah I know some people have been able to use the internal GPS with no problems at all, but I'm not one of them. When it locks it's great. But when it doesn't, it doesn't ever pick up at all.
The primer software(s) sounds fun, but it's just a little too much work to fuss around 2 or three programs when it's easier for me to just push the on button (on the bluetooth) and then Use GPS in google maps.
Thanks for the help though! Much appreciated.
