gsm?

hey
this is a really beginner question but what is GSM?
i know that gprs...allows you to get on to full internet
and
u know that wap..allows you to get on to black and white internet...
but i have no idea about GSM.....does any one know?
thanks
jay
Hi PROPHETOR,
GSM is the standard for the voice calls you make in the UK and some of (if not all) of Europe.
You can also use GSM to connect to the internet. But this is pay by minute and not by the KB like GPRS. Connecting to the internet using GPRS and GSM are very similar apart from billing. Unless you are feeling rich I would not suggest using GSM to connect to the internet as it can work out very costly.
Hope this helps.
Gil.
also if you use GSM modem connection to an ISP
i believe that it's max 9600baud at least that how it were
when i looked into it and it's pretty expensive
oh right......
thanks guys

Not receiving 2g or 3g

Hey guys, i was wondering if someone knows something about this and what would be wrong with it.
I'm not receiving any 2g or 3g, only G or H. Though H very very few times. While friends of me receive 3g while im at the same place as them.
I have a T-mobile g2 touch, rooted to modaco with the newest radio rom. I had the same problems with standard rom and 2.73 t-mobile UK roms.
I live in holland which has decent 3g network i guess....
I just wanted to know if someone encountered the same problems or have any intel on this, before i unroot and go to t-mobile store.
thnx in advance!
edit: oh and yes, i have web n walk obviously if you wonder
wups, posted in wrong forum! my bad!
I also get more HSDPA and GPRS/GSM than 3G.
Only few times I had 3G in some Citiys.
Never saw Edge... (a friend has a lot of it)
Switzerland, Orange
Never actually saw my 3g pop up, i spend alot of my time in the major cities actually too. =((
You won't "see" 2G, because G means GPRS which is 2G. If your networks provided 2.5G, you may see EDGE, "E", but most European networks never bothered to implement it because they'd already gone 3G and there saw no need for EDGE. As far as I'm aware, O2 in the UK hastily added EDGE to their network purely to support the original iPhone.
Obviously, when it comes to the icons, "H" (HSDPA) is superior to "3G" (standard UMTS) so I'd only really be concerned if you're getting "G" when everyone around you on the same network is getting "3G" or better.
Regards,
Dave
Which is my case, but what could cause this? t-mobile forgot to turn it on on my subscription or something? lol

Signal boost

Hello,
Does anyone know of any antennas or other physical devices that I can use to boost my cell phone's signal? In my apartment in Connecticut, I drop calls all the time while talking but it doesn't really happen anywhere else so I only need to improve the signal in my place. I remember I used to have an actual antenna for my old Nokia phone that would stick to the outside of my car. Also, I once had one of those signal boosting stickers that went on the back of the phone.
If anyone knows of any reliable way to boost the signal on my T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 in Connecticut that doesn't involve flashing a new radio, I'd appreciate it. Thank you!

Did you wait for the sticker to boot up?

They seem to have solutions for all cellphone applications
Cellphone-Mate looks reasonable.

let me know how it works! haha
maybe try a different radio?
I know Best Buy sells signal boosters but i remember them being a bit expensive.
unfortunately our devices don't have an external antenna jack, i know the kaiser (original tilt)
Thanks guys.
As far as radios, do I just keep trying one by one until I see an improvement? Is there one that is known of that is stronger than others? The Fuze forum has a thread with people's results voting for which was best. Nothing like that here.

Yes, exactly...you'll need to try out the ones that are available for your model, and just see which one gives the best results in your situation/location. You can read votes and recommendations all day long, but they can have no relation to what results you will see
THIS thread has the complete list of radios available for the Rhodium
Unwiredsignal with a Desktop kit 801247
You can try a Wilson desktop cell phone signal booster. It might work for you. I have one in my home office... (basement) and it covers that area only (20x20) so I think it would be perfect for an apartment. I havent tried it in a larger area, but Unwiredsignal.com says it will cover a one to two room area. There is no physical connection to your phone.
Hope this helps...

Both ATT and TMobile offer microcell. Trialing in various areas.
It uses your existing broadband connection to relay calls to your phone.
Looking at ATTs' website it appears to be $150.00 for the equipment.
Here is a link.

Thanks a lot guys. I'd hate to have to pay 320 for the one on Unwiredsignal.com but I'll look into it.

[Q] 4g radio.

is it possible to recieve 4g data signals on my samsung fascinate? i was thinking it would be possible if i found a 4g radio that i could odin to my fascinate? ive been looking for a few days now, and ive heard of people doing that procedure on other phones, would it be possible for samsung fascinate?
Oh geez man. I can see you are new here so I will be nice.
3g/4g (CDMA/LTE) are different wireless technologies. The short answer is it's a hardware limitation. No amount of searching or hacking will get a 4g radio on the fascinate just as no amount of hacking will turn our wifi into an NFC chip or our light sensor into a front facing camera. The hardware simply doesnt support it.
Sorry!
PS: As to people saying they enabled a 4g radio......I used to tell my friends that my Dad worked at Nintendo when I was a kid and I had secret enhancements for my NES. That doesn't mean it actually happened. =)
oh darn. thank you for the feed back though
maybe you should look for an Epic?

[Q] My phone doesn't want to switch in 3G

Hi, As the title said it, i have a problem with my phone, i don't think that's my sim card , but my phone doesn't want to switch in 3G, he is always in HSDPA or something like that. Can you help me ? I'm running Hydrogen-ics with base LPQ and kernel netchip 1.2
Thank's !
HSDPA is 3G
So why before le sign 3G was here and not here ? Now he is on Edge and he should be in HSDPA...
I have no idea what you're talking about. You started off by saying your phone won't switch to 3G, but is using HSDPA, and now you're saying it won't use HSDPA and is stuck on Edge? Make up your mind.
Sorry, that's was a mistake of me. I looked the differences between HSDPA and 3G, and i saw that HSDPA was more faster than 3G ... I'm really a noob x) But thank's for your answer, and sorry about my bad english, i'm french !
Thank's !
