[Q] 4g radio. - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is it possible to recieve 4g data signals on my samsung fascinate? i was thinking it would be possible if i found a 4g radio that i could odin to my fascinate? ive been looking for a few days now, and ive heard of people doing that procedure on other phones, would it be possible for samsung fascinate?

Oh geez man. I can see you are new here so I will be nice.
3g/4g (CDMA/LTE) are different wireless technologies. The short answer is it's a hardware limitation. No amount of searching or hacking will get a 4g radio on the fascinate just as no amount of hacking will turn our wifi into an NFC chip or our light sensor into a front facing camera. The hardware simply doesnt support it.
Sorry!
PS: As to people saying they enabled a 4g radio......I used to tell my friends that my Dad worked at Nintendo when I was a kid and I had secret enhancements for my NES. That doesn't mean it actually happened. =)

oh darn. thank you for the feed back though

maybe you should look for an Epic?

[Q] T-Mobile admits Vibrant has no UMA support

Ive had many "not registered" errors when trying to place a calls over WiFi and called in for support to TMo many times. The third week and the fourth or fifth "PDA" service guy went all out and then gave up and turned me over to "Loyalty". Its like getting switched to the inquisition. THEY told me, 'bad news' Vibrant can't make calls over WiFi. SO I confessed it only worked 50% of the time.
When I agreed to take the phone, TMo said it would support UMA. In the mean time I think they decided they would not support UMA. I can call TMo phone mail no problem and the phone rings and then disconnects. It will make a call from "voice" but shows the not registered error when I dial a number. It has to be TMo router settings. They offered to send me a 3G Curve which they said would support UMA telephony, but they had no other phones - oh yah maybe the "Shaddow" was available but even they wouldn't go so far. I'm SOOOO sick of RIM, really, really sick. So I rejected that. So now I'm making calls and receiving calls over WiFi, but not reliably and with no support.
I'm fairly certain this is the tip of the big iceberg. My Vibrant was very early pre-purchase, so it might not have had all the TMo down mods. Never the less, it seems crazy that I would pay them to use my own DSL/WiFi as I seem to be doing with my HTC Incredible/Verizon phone. It works great, but of course I pay.
TMo gave me some questionable information regarding using Vonage, which I found does is not suposed to work with the Vibrant. They also said no Android phone will work with TMo hot spots, which I am inclined to accept. It appears all the carriers will do anything to keep a branded hand set off of free WiFi telephony. So I'm trying Google Voice. It registers, but I have so far not recieved a call to my new Gvoice phone number.
Do I need to root the phone? Are there apps that will help? Does any one out there think the 2.2 upgrade with the TMo holy water has a ghost of a chance of making WiFi phone calls without a TMo charge? My Incredible/Verizon still tethers on PDA-net and I think that is not charged. But I'm not clear on that either.
I just pre-bought a Tab through Cell Phone Hut. I will see if a device free of TMo tweeks will route telephony over WiFi. All I really need is a cheep pre-paid SIMS card for OTA. It's nuts thinking to pay 3G or 4G OTA data rates when the same data is free over WiFi. There will be many Android apps to do all your data I/O when you are in range.
cheers all... thx for any light on this!
Umm what? You're able to make calls on wifi 50% Of the time. You can make Google voice calls over wifi? You were told the vibrant would have uma? ?? Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but....
Google voice is NOT a voip service so i think you're misjudging its use.
Vibrant was never said to have wifi calling, just like every other android.
An app called kineto was recently announced that does wifi calling but its not uma. it doesn't hand off to cell network. Its announced to be available for the new mytouch n moto defy.
Also, tmo uma will no longer give you 'free calling'. It takes from your minutes so its only real advantage is to extend coverage.

The Vibrant hasn't been confirmed to ever get Wifi calling but it was demo'ed on a Vibrant running 2.2. The feature could possibly be added to the vibrant once it receives the 2.2 update.
This is strange. We've had our vibrants about a week. When I'm home I have the Wifi turned on. The signal bars drop to zero. I have just assumed that my voice calls were going over Wifi to our DSL modem over the Internet.
Note: We happen to have a T-Mo wireless router from back in the days when we were using it with our Blackberries to keep the minutes down. Subsequently T-Mo switched us to an unlimited plan, but we still use this router for one hard-wired home line.

Signal bars dropping to zero is just a visual indicator; doesn't necessarily mean there is zero signal, just not enough signal to flip the visual indicator. This happens to me quite a lot - I have no signal, but someone calls me and the call quality is fine.
In any case - basic logical fallacy - correlation does not necessarily imply correlation. Although it would be super nice to make calls over wifi!
<------ Tmo Retail Rep
There is no Android phone that supports UMA at the moment. The only Android that will have UMA that has been announced so far is the myTouch HD. Not sure why someone would tell you the Vibrant has the feature.
Not only that, 0 bars doesn't mean no service. The circle with a slash means no service

Where was it ever said that the Vibrant would have UMA? Its one thing if a rep was mistaken but no slick, ad, spec sheet, or anything else that I recall ever implied that UMA was going to be available. I came from a Blackberry to the Vibrant so I felt I was aware that UMA was not available.
UMA in Android NOT
Apparently Android has no UMA support, but a lot of people want it:
Check out Issue 6242 - Google's board for android code / issues.
I am thinking about moving to vibrant and tmobile. the only thing that is stopping me is the lack of uma support on the vibrant. Does anyone know whether this is capability will be added with the 2.2 update??
Have you guys not tried any of the new leaked froyo roms? They all have wifi calling and it works, although its not uma and doesn't hand off it works great. This is actually a Godsend for I have had Tmobile for 7 years and I get no service in my house, finally a solution. I'm not sure this will be released in the upcoming froyo update or it was just pulled from the Mytouch4g and they made it work for our phones.

[Q] MOD? - Vibrant 4G to Vibrant 3G to make it a 4G - *Possible??*

Does anyone have any info/input on this?
I don't know the answer to this but this is what I'm thinking...
If 1. Both the Vibrant 4G & 3G are physically the same, 2. Hardware is identical, 3. Parts can be interchanged.
If these things are hypothetically the same, would it be possible to buy the "4G" part, and install it in a 3G to turn it into a 4G?
...the question then is, What makes the 4G a "4G"?
Software wise, I'm sure we can take a 4G ROM from the dev's and flash it in, then software will be running.
If this is at all possible, we could mod our 3G Vibrants and make it a true 4G phone and not have to pay for a whole new one!
Thoughts?
Yeah im curious about that too!
I'm pretty sure they aren't the same. I believe the radio is different. It sounded like the leaked 4G rom wasn't totally compatible because of this and some other things.

[BUG] Persistent Data Connectivity Issues

Hey there,
I have had this issue since I got my hands on my Atrix but it still bugs me that the issue has never been fixed. Others also still have these issues, but I hope that with our talented devs, a fix can be found.
When connected to my home WiFi network, Internet works fine.
When I disable WiFi on my phone, Data won't reconnect and the H icon won't reappear.
When I walk away from my WiFi range, Data again doesn't reconnect like it should.
When using data, after a minute or two the Icon will start to show repeated attempts of uploading data when I click something, but will never download anything, causing my website or app to hang and eventually time out. This is oddly fixed by me going to my APN settings, editing Vodafone Australia (my internet apn) but not changing anything and then going settings > save. Causing data to disconnect and reconnect correctly. (most of the time)
This is very annoying. I can stay connected to data for a max of 5 minutes, and I know it's not the network as my friend with a GT540 Optimus can stay connected for hours at a time at the same place in the same conditions.
If any dev can help then it would be greatly appreciated (or if anyone knows of a fix), I am willing to help test anything created and also provide any logs that may help narrow down the issue (although I made need assistance in retrieving those logs as I've never tried) in addition, the mods used on my phone can be found below in my signature except the radio info which is 1.77.30P
You can contact me on this thread, PM or rarely in the freenode chat
Thanks for your time.

is there really nothing I can do to help? This issue alone is making me consider selling up and buying a SGS2 or Sensation, since I rely heavily on a constant data connection.
I guess my only option is to wait for CM7 and hope that fixes the issues I'm seeing..
Wifi connection at my house is a pain. It won't connect to it at all unless I go into the wifi settings menu and turn it on from there. I also have problems with it losing data connection when going into the Market or Navigation...which was pretty bad on my trip to Arkansas. I just thought it was my Atrix.
Personally, every Android phone I have owned has had glaring hardware/software issues EXCEPT my Inspire. I'm switching to Apple. *prepares to be flamed*

LOL, i won't flame you. Android vs iOS is the same argument as Windows vs MacOS.
It's a "Features" vs "Stability" trade off. Apple maintains better stability by cutting down features, locking things down and limiting usability <- not that hard to accomplish. Try to work in Windows 7 under non-admin account and without installing useless crap. You will be surprised as to how smooth and nice everything functions.
But for me, Android / Windows feature list wins by a large margin. I've only had one frustratingly buggy Android phone and it was a Droid 2 Global. Again, not Android's fault but Motorola's for releasing crappy software.
Anyway, if stability is your main goal, then iPhone is the phone for you
You might want to also try a Nexus phone (perhaps Nexus 3?). I've heard they are supremely stable. (never actually owned one )
p.s. I've seen a quote by someone on here, that half the fun from owning an Android phone is modding it. And for me that's 100% true.

Is that the right radio for your phone?
I thought the 30p was for AT&T only? Could this be your problem? You may need an international radio.
I know you have an unlocked AT&T, but I thought the radio was carrier specific, and not phone specific.
I could be wrong though. My wife tells me I am always wrong!

hmm that seems like a good idea, but can I even flash an international radio on an AT&T handset? Also Vodafone Australia uses the exact same frequencies that AT&T use except AT&T 4G is considered Vodafone 850.

Someone more technically minded with the Atrix will have to answer this. I thought the hardware was the same, so in theory flashing the wrong radio shouldn't do anything but give you data loss if it doesn't work. Then again, I am frequently wrong.

epic find. that's my post on an old user handle which I haven't bothered to change yes, I won this phone but so far it's been quite bugged. I originally thought that I was given a prototype/dev model since they shipped it before it was released but now I know that's not the case.

How is the radio?

Hey guys! Please excuse my noobish ignorance as I'm usually over in the Epic Touch threads, but I'm looking into getting my pops a OG Photon & I have a few questions.
My Dad needs a Sprint smartphone with an exceptional radio because one area he will be using it often is up in the mountains, roaming in a fringe coverage area on Verizon. And lemme just say now, switching over to Big Red ain't gonna happen, lol.
Now, I've heard rumors that out of all the smartphones in the Sprint stable, the Photon kicks everything else's backside when it comes to radio reception.
So that brings me back to my question: I'm looking for some first hand input on how the radio(s) perform on this puppy to help me determine if this is the right phone for him.
Also, I need to make sure he can wirelessly tether with the Photon without losing 4G capability. I've been reading about how if you unlock the bootloader you lose 4G. If I just root his phone & NOT unlock the bootloader, can I just install a tethering app and still retain the 4G capability? Also, curious if anyone has tried Foxfi (wireless tether w/o root) on the Photon & if/how that worked out.
Any input coming from my fellow XDA peeps would be most welcome & appreciated.
TIA guys!

Yep, the photon has a ridiculously good radio. But such is true with the majority of Motos newer devices. Because the photon is super cheap now, you really can't go wrong. Yes, you can root and not unlock to keep 4g. And yes, foxfi works great.
Thanks for the reply, sounds promising! Does the same reception quality apply to the 3G & 4G radios as well?
Anyone? Bueller? Lol

I cant speak for 4g as i dont use it. But i get sprint 3g nearly everywhere i get call reception. Data speeds have always been slow as hell for me though.

Few questions for EVO 4G owners

Currently looking at the S3 or the EVO right now to change up from my S2 (it's starting to mess up hardware wise) While I love my S2 there were always issues with Samsung radios and being for lack of a better word piss poor signal wise. Just kinda looking for some info oh what you guys think about your EVO's and radio signal as well as hardware vs the S3. I can read reviews all day long but looking for some real word use from actual owners who have been using the phone for a few.
anything helpful would be great
Thanks
And ermf wrong forum (at school and tired meh)
Edit
I'm not worried about the LTE issues I've been reading about right now as Seattle does not have any LTe coverage (and from the looks of it were not getting it till sometime next year) So this would be 3G based radio performance that I'm asking about.
I don't have any signal issues. I have a few dropped calls now and then but I think that's a Sprint issue. Camera and camera software is topnotch. Speaker sounds good. Bluetooth works good. WiFi and data act weird sometimes, seems like the phone has a rough time switching between the two. Proximity sensor sometimes doesn't work right in low light situations. All in all I think it's a good phone. Runs fast, sense reloads once in awhile.
Agreed...the phone is solid, I'm happy I went with it instead of the gs3. Sprint's service on the other hand...

Eh I'm ok with the Sprint service here (at least for me) The S2 has been solid for me just recently it's been having reboot issues out of no where even with pure stock so I know it's hardware issues which I'm going to get it replaced but I've been looking at the S3 and the EVO as well to replace it. Reading the forums it's looking like some are having issues with 3g and most are having issues with LTE which like I said honestly does not bother me being as I have not LTE here in Seattle for awhile :/
Yeah, we in Seattle are hosed for a while
If you get the Evo, bear in mind, there is currently no S-off method for the version you'll likely get. I haven't had any WiFi issues like other poster mentioned and I love this device.
That said, posting here, you're likely to get biased advice. Hopefully you posted in both forums.
from my flying AOKP'd Evo LTE and xda premium
never had any issues with radios or signal.
