How is the radio? - Motorola Photon 4G

Hey guys! Please excuse my noobish ignorance as I'm usually over in the Epic Touch threads, but I'm looking into getting my pops a OG Photon & I have a few questions.
My Dad needs a Sprint smartphone with an exceptional radio because one area he will be using it often is up in the mountains, roaming in a fringe coverage area on Verizon. And lemme just say now, switching over to Big Red ain't gonna happen, lol.
Now, I've heard rumors that out of all the smartphones in the Sprint stable, the Photon kicks everything else's backside when it comes to radio reception.
So that brings me back to my question: I'm looking for some first hand input on how the radio(s) perform on this puppy to help me determine if this is the right phone for him.
Also, I need to make sure he can wirelessly tether with the Photon without losing 4G capability. I've been reading about how if you unlock the bootloader you lose 4G. If I just root his phone & NOT unlock the bootloader, can I just install a tethering app and still retain the 4G capability? Also, curious if anyone has tried Foxfi (wireless tether w/o root) on the Photon & if/how that worked out.
Any input coming from my fellow XDA peeps would be most welcome & appreciated.
TIA guys!

Yep, the photon has a ridiculously good radio. But such is true with the majority of Motos newer devices. Because the photon is super cheap now, you really can't go wrong. Yes, you can root and not unlock to keep 4g. And yes, foxfi works great.

Thanks for the reply, sounds promising! Does the same reception quality apply to the 3G & 4G radios as well?

Anyone? Bueller? Lol

Need opinions - Evo 3D poor reception

I am coming from an Evo 4G. My apartment has always had sub par reception on sprint but now with the Evo 3D it is becoming irritating. In the same places I had 3G, I now am roaming. In a place where I had 2-3 4G bars, I have barely 1. I have tried updating my prl, my profile. One thing that I will note is that 4G on the 1 reported bar is about as good as the 3 bars on the old Evo. However 3G reception is definitely not very good overall.
My question - as I approach the one month I have had this phone, I wonder if I should:
A. Exchange the phone for another 3D. Has anyone heard of reception issues related to hardware? How has this device compared for everyone to the old Evo as far as reception? Do I have a dud?
B. Return it and get an original Evo.
C. Something else - call sprint ask for airwave or something like that.
I appreciate any advice anyone has. Thanks in advance.
My radio bars do show a tad lower, but I havent really noticed any issues.
I am willing to be some future PRL updates will help this.
My OG Evo was the same around launch time too
Had the same issue vs my old Eris on Verizon. Sprint reset the network which helped some, but I wound up manually changing the PRL to a USCellular one. Gained 4 bars.

so PRL updates meaning non-sprint developer created? so 2 votes in favor of waiting it out?

Have some friends with different carriers test your area, see which is stronger and use their PRL. That's what I did, told that to the Sprint rep while getting my MSL and he liked the idea (I did hint I would leave if I couldn't get a better signal).

Had the exact same issue and well I returned mine this last Sunday and got a new 3d and well it's better so far. Last week Sprint updated prl over the air and it worked for a minute and then it was back to roaming, dropping calls, battery draining like crazy, sensitive power button. I know it's only Monday but I have not dropped one call or went into roaming yet.

Verizon is strongest but if I take that PRL then I wont have Sprint 4G will I?
Also how would you load the other PRL?
Thank you!
I had the power button sensitivity issue - where the button presses momentarily caused the power menu to come up instead of going into sleep mode. So I took that phone into Sprint yesterday and they gave me a new phone, within 30 days. Any replacement should be a new phone and not a refurbished one within the initial 30 days of purchase.
Point being is that they new phone to me doesn't pick up a signal as well as the other Evo 3D that I had. We have an Airave at work and the old phone would have max bars and crystal clear, today first day with the new phone was at about 2 or so bars and the one phone call was very well lets just say not so crystal clear.
Recommend you take the phone back and ask them to test it. They can test the phone for you, and worst case swamp it out for you. Don't recommend PRL hacks since those tend to get people kicked out of Sprint due to excessive roaming.

Sprint 4G is on a different radio than data/voice, WiMax vs CDMA/1Rxx.
If you search for say "carrier name" PRL July 2011, you should be able to find a current file. Download the file, open QPST Service Programming, click the tab "Roam" and put the file location in "Preferred Roaming". I don't think you have a dud. Rather than bars, what are your actual speeds using something like Speed Test from the Market. I've had well....more than 3 of these E3D's, lol, and only 1 got half-ass decent speeds out of the box. With some re-provisioning and data reset methods in the General section I got all of them to set up correctly on the network.

[Q] Just ordered a Razr Maxx

Can anyone provide any helpful tips for it, or have any gotcha's to avoid?
Thanks
Honestly, I think the best advice is to read up on the razr/maxx in the xda forums and elsewhere online (droidrazr.com comes to mind).
I just activated my Maxx today. I choose it after doing a fair bit of research and reading the forums I've already mentioned. There's no shortcut to becoming well informed on a topic.

The network has been funky here around Nashville too. Totally pisses me off when that happens!
I'm loving the MAXX though, AWESOME battery life!
The Verizon 4G network isnt all its cracked up to be with IMO. They say its great and all but have read several different things. All of course Im sure have something else to say. I was told or read whichever that if you keep your phone in 4g/3g mode and not in a 4g area that helps to drain the battery as its always looking for a 4g tower. Since not all areas have 4g its best to turn it off unless you are in an area. I have had several outages just like everyone else. My wife travels the country and has on more than one occasion were it says it has a 4g signal but nope.
On a side note I just but the Maxx and am loving it.
Just curious what the 3G speeds are like, so if you disable 4G due to being in a fringe area, is 3G still decently fast or does it really suck?
I did a speed test on 3g earlier today and, got 1mb down & 0.90mb up.
RAZR MAXXimum
Vzw 3g is waaay faster than sprint ever was for me on 3g.

Why do people keep calling it Photon 4G when ...

I keep seeing people post on a Development section saying Photon 4G with ICS or CWM or unlocked and etc, shouldn't we just call it Photon 3G and it's less confusing since currently we can't get WiMax w/ any of those method. I mean, it's already bad enough when we have marketing people calling, advertising, and forcing it down the consumer throat calling WiMax a 4G service when we all know darn well that is not what ITU want 4G to be call. And it's not like I don't appreciate the works that these chefs do, because I'm. But it kinda annoy the heck out of me when we know darn well as geeks calling these stuff 4G since we know there is no 4G, not even in marketing term.
Can't we just keeping it real?
What are you talking about I used 4g in new York city before I unlocked my phone and it was very fast I used to get 10mb download speed there is no company out there with 3g that's that fast

That is exactly his point. Once the phone is unlocked, it is no longer 4G. Thus roms that break WIMAX (due to being unlocked) should not have 4G in the name.

The phone is called "Photon 4g". Consumer modifications to the phone don't change it's name. You are seriously just splitting hairs.
actually, I think the name is "photon" since motorola has put their trade mark after (and on) the "photon" instead of the "photon 4G".

with cellular (wimax)? I didnt know that was possible. awesome.
I guess one could argue that you are on another carrier (such as AT&T) with a USA gsm-unlocked photon and consider Hspa "4g." Although technically wimax and Hspa are not 4G, some carriers market it as such.
now that would be splitting hairs.
4g hspa+, right?
Sent from my MOF'd up MoPho
I could be wrong since I'm not w/ t-mobile, but isn't its 4g apply to hspa+ and not hspa? I don't think photon support hspa+ either, maybe just hspa.
HSPA+ is officially defined as 3G release 7, and is not considered 4G by ITU-R even under a relaxed standard.
that being said, I would be thrilled to have those speeds regardless.
well it apparently DOES have an LTE chip inside as well as so-called Wi-"Max", but if that will ever be functional, who knows, but it does have "4G" capability, just not functioning ones, yet.
photon doesnt have LTE
photon LTE has been DIS-proved time and time again. Do you have facts to prove otherwise?

Why would you call an Apple product that currently (and probably forever) runs only iOS an Android tablet? (Confused)
I suppose my Xoom could run Windows 8 if MS wanted to make it so......
I'm sorry I forgot to add the sarcasm tag. I didn't say I could or would, but rather if people should be able to call it 4G simply because the hardware support it but the OS isn't, then the same people could just call iPad3 an android tablet for the same reason. I didn't expect I have to spell this out in a forum full of geeks.

OK - lesson learned for you I guess. Don't expect people who read and post on lots of boards to catch the little nuances of your (unstated) sarcasm. I skim numerous boards and posts everyday and also love sarcasm - and still get in trouble because someone reads me so very literally!
Peace to you!
Okay guys, simmer down...
On a less harsh note, why not call it an Electrify? The only difference between an Electrify and a Photon 4G is one has a WiMax chip and the other does not. If you have a WiMax chip, you have a Photon, but if your ROM can't access it, you might as well just call it an Electrify, since functionally, that is exactly what you have. A Sprint Motorola Electrify, since Electrify literally means "Photon 4G without 4G" (4G as WiMax, not trying to get into the nuances of what is and isn't 4G).
Meanwhile, Electrify users continue to have an Electrify because we have no WiMax to lose.
Also, the correct answer is: "Because that's the model name." 4G is part of the model name.
No sarcasm above this line.
Lastly, I wouldn't trust an iAnything to run to the store for me, let alone Android... Also, "Can" does not mean "Should". You can probably get ICS on an N1 or Desire, but should you? Absolutely not.
So, this may be an unrelated question, but what happens when Sprint switches over to LTE? I'm in LA (Pasadena, to be exact), and sometimes it seems like the promised "4G"-speeds never appeared. I almost switched over to Verizon until Sprint offered me a refurbished Photon in place of yet a 4th replacement Epic 4G.
Sadly, now that I really have fallen for the Photon--I've always thought Motorola makes great phones (but succumbed to the Epic's promised keyboard awesomeness), I'm wondering how long Sprint will support WiMax.
[Sarcasm]Maybe I should switch to the iPhone 5 when they come, at least there's only one party line./[Sarcasm]

My 4g is nonexistent or slow - on ICS

I'm rooted on ice cream sandwhich rom, sense 3.6
Basically my 4g connection is very poor, if and when it does work, its slow. It is probably related to my 4g coverage area, but I don't remember it being this bad. I went from an evo 4g, to an iphone 4, and now to the evo 3d, so I don't remember my previous 4g experience. Besides from coverage, can it be related to the rom I installed (cool ics)? Is there a way to fix or diagnose it?
thanks

what are you talking about? There is no wimax 4g network. the network they call a 4g network isn't even a network. It's not even possible to drive a mile without losing your connection. look at your bars. any bars? Also didn't know your provider would actually support their fake network that they don't claim anymore. yeah. they won't repair any towers. they won't fix any issues with wimax. they won't do anything that helps and supports their customers. They don't care about you. they have never cared about you. Now if you want a 4G network. Go verizon. 50+M down. 12M up.
what do you mean runcool? Isn't wimax the standard used in our phones for ,4g (technology or network)? Is it no longer supported?
nvm. I did a read http://gizmodo.com/5847643/its-official-sprint-is-going-lte
Has wimax been shut down completely ? I still get connected to 4g here and there.
You might find a single tower that has their so called fake 4G network WHICH ISN'T 4G!.... But if it goes down. THEY WILL NOT REPAIR IT BECAUSE SPRINT IS CHEAP AND THE OWNERS OF SPRINT WOULD CARE LESS about you and I. Dishonest company. Refusal. I can see many issues with their LTE 4G network as well. So tell me.... Verizon can get 50M down 12M up..... why is that? why can't sprint do ANYTHING TO IMPROVE THEIR NETWORK!? Also why can't they just FLAT OUT ALLOW OUR PHONES to work like AT&T?!?!? meaning fix their 3G network! It would ONLY take a software update. lol. however, hint hint. the software update would make their 3G look like 4G lmao! because their 4G is so lame! hahahhaha
but to answer your question... wimax development/adding new towers/supporting has been shut down. they do not care about their WiMax and they never have cared about it. Yes I hope their CEO reads this comment! hope he reads makes changes in his crap company after reading this. BUT fact is that he doesn't care about you and I. he only cares about his own pockets. he would care less if he drags sprint into bankruptcy because he already made his millions on ruining a company.

This is just hate speech and upset ranting. You make some okay points, but get over is what I think.
OP, you need to go to the dialer, type in ##DATA# and check your WiMax settings. If there is anything about vm or virgin mobile in the settings, that is probably your issue. If you know your msl, edit the settings (you can find the right ones for sprint somewhere on here) and that should make a difference. Also, there is a thread about 4G Hack in the Apps, Themes section. Check that out.

Actually. it's called facts. There aren't any legit towers. Even if you're right next to a tower... you get the same speed with AT&T. lol There is no hate or ranting. It's just rolling eyes at another large company that doesn't care about it's customers anymore. then again. They're all that way these days. sadly. oh well It's 3G speeds... not 4G. Anyone else have their LTE on Verizon Prepaid?

Just wondering if you do, what prl you may be using or radio. I just got mine yesterday and put it on Verizon and I love the phone. I lose 3G at my house sometimes but for some reason Verizon has always been that spotty for me so there may be no cure....Sprint isn't the best either at my house. The best believe it or not is AT&T. Everywhere else though usually Verizon has the best service around my town. I live in Virginia. Input would be greatly appreciated.

Yes if it's done right you will have 3G and everything working. In my area Verizon is also much faster than Boost Mobile.

I flashed mine today this sh!t is lightning fast 2mbs download and a processor that can handle it (orlando florida prl 000001) I have everything working but I'm wondering if anyone was able to get mms to work naitively. I'm using the verizon messages app from verizon. I don't have a problem with it except how ugly the icon and ui is. Plus I wanna be able to use the native app.
Can you help me

Just wondering if you do, what prl you may be using or radio. I just got mine yesterday and put it on Verizon and I love the phone. I lose 3G at my house sometimes but for some reason Verizon has always been that spotty for me so there may be no cure....Sprint isn't the best either at my house. The best believe it or not is AT&T. Everywhere else though usually Verizon has the best service around my town. I live in Virginia. Input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,
Quick thought and a question:
1. I have the LTE rocking on Page Plus, also a Verizon service. For those considering the Verizon network over Sprint's, consider Page Plus over Verizon PP for two reasons:
A. Avoid illegality of ESN cloning
B. Being kicked off the network for data abuse, cause they know those tiny, dumbphones aren't capable of such data usage
2. For those rocking these LTEs on VZW networks, even with the right MMS settings, can you guys confirm that when you get an MMS, you have to MANUALLY hit the download button to download the images? Instead of the phone automatically engaging the data to download the image, and then shutting the data off, much like all the native Verizon phones like the Rezound, for example?
Thanks for your help!

Not trying to be a smarta$$ at all here, bud, but Google is your friend on that one . So much you can find out about it, if you Google it.
But simply stated, it's an MVNO that runs on the Verizon network... Decent support, and service for reasonable price...
can i flash it to metro? if so how
VZW prepay on a 4g?
I keep hearing how some ppl have their Verizon 4g phone on the Verizon prepaid service and I need to know how I get that to happen for me. I have a droid bionic with a 4g sim but I use the VZW prepay bc I don't use my cell but about 1/2 the month (dead area for cell phone coverage in the sticks where I live) so I don't want contract pricing. I've been using one of the Verizon prepay phones but they just aren't up to par for me and I love the droids. Somebody please tell me how I get this to work?!?! I've tried transferring my service myself online to the 4g sim but of course that doesn't work and you can't even get a Verizon rep to even discuss it. Is it a matter of getting a different kind of sim for the phone, i.e. a 3g sim if they even exist in the VZW world. Is there such a thing as a prepaid sim versus a contract sim? I'm lost!
