Man the Droid X2 seems like a awesome device and I'm looking to jumpship from T-Mobile. Now...why in the world does it not have 4G LTE?...makes no sense. Why release a new phone and still have it run on the slow network? Any ideas or comments from Motorola/Verizon? Besides the Bionic any hints on a refreshed Droid with 4G LTE?

4g LTE would drain the crap out this phone battery with it being dual core. I am glad it doesn't have 4g.

Yeah it must be something like that :S..guess thats why the Revolution has 4G but no dual core
Love my X2. Wouldn't have bought it if it had LTE. It would likely have been thicker, heavier, and would have drained my battery much faster. I was shopping for a killer 3G phone and that's what I got. ;-)

I also love this phone. Can't wait for custom roms. In all honesty the speed of 4g is kind of overkill for a phone anyway

Plus, the LTE radio is thick as ****. Moto wanted to keep the slim design just like the original. And like colonel said, it would've drained the battery like crazy.
Go home. Don't ask a question and then when you get people who are taking time to answer you you reply with sarcastic and rude replies. Go get a 4g phone, I don't want to see you all the time in the x2 forums.

Everyone is right so far. its a design choice, battery issue, and hardware problem. Tegra has had issues with LTE chipsets, its been noted and is a big reason the original Bionic never made it. Also the chipsets SUCK battery and are a good bit larger, so its good for our phone size and battery life. Honestly, i love the battery life of this thing, LTE would cut it in half (where its available, and would still drain a bit extra even where its not avail.)
Maybe because MOST of us don't have 4G yet. They've had 3 or 4 outages, nationwide, so far. The battery issue was a big one for me, and based on some of the troubles they've been having with the Thunderbolt, I'm glad I made the decision I did. That's also however, becuase good choices are limited on VZW. They seem to be trailing a bit. There are some very good phones for other carriers that are already out. Everyone is holding out for the beloved Bionic, which isn't really going to smoke the competition like it could have 6 months ago. VZW could get some respect back by releasing a Dev phone. Now a Bionic with an inlocked bootloader and vanilla android?.....that would be nice.
dual core phone and 4G drain battery
tech has to improve before i make the jump to 4G
Well, I got a few more years of school so I ain't going anywhere, but I do plan to move afterward and the area I'm moving to has 4G LTE. My current area isn't going to get it until 2013, and I can just get a 4G phone, then. But in reality, I really don't even know how I would use 4G LTE bandwidth when I have it.
Anywho, the point is, for some of us 4G LTE isn't an option for quite some time, and by the time it is, we'll be able to get new phones at the upgrade price. In our cases, this phone makes A LOT of sense and is a great buy.
There are a *A LOT* of people stuck in 3G. Furthermore, other than the better download speeds, I don't really see 4G phones fully utilizing the 4G network. The tablets, sure maybe, but since the majority of people are still on 3G, most everything out there is going to cater to it. It's kinda like when broadband came out and virtually all websites were still 56K friendly.
And I'm not saying there aren't benefits to 4G, I'm just saying for the typical user, there's really not a whole lot out there capitalizing on it.

I'll second that. 3g is plenty fast for surfing the web and downloading apps, emails, etc. I actually went into the store ready to buy a thunderbolt and the salesman was having a field day with it until we started talking battery life. Fortunately, he was more interested in having a happy customer than selling a thunderbolt.

Ah, A little sarcastic maybe, but he wasn't THAT rude. He's just misinformed about the virtues of NOT having an LTE receiver in your phone. Who would want a big, clunky, batterey chewing Thunderbolt, when they could have a Droid X2 instead? It's a no-brainer.
....or maybe he's just throwing out an inocent flame or two, just to see who catches 'em.
It does not have "4g" but the sbf file says the platform is 4g tegra... Computer also detects a 4g modem on certain states... Take from that what you will.

According to some it's just recycled code. But to me I wonder why the computer detects 4G hardware when it's "not there"... does not make much sense to me. Now granted if it had 4G you would have expected that to be advertised and that it would have already been activated and running.
The wife and I both had thunderbolts at first. Those were the biggest pieces of crap. You name the issue folks were having (spontaneous reboots, crap battery life) and we were having it. HTC shoehorned an LTE radio into a desire HD and cheaped out on the screen etc to offset the costs. Swapped for the droid x2 and haven't looked back. Nowhere near 4g in my area and won't be. The LTE radios sucked batteries even though we weren't in an LTE service area. I laugh at the folks that even compare these 4g phones with a phone like this one...when the same technology in phones like the thunderbolt could have been purchased nearly 2 years ago (minus LTE). Kinda like 50Meg broadband on a celeron e-machine =)
The biggest reason I wouldn't buy a 4g phone right now is simply due to the fact this is the first generation of phones with LTE radios and it's going to take a while to get all these issues worked out. I figure when I'm eligible to upgrade in a year and a half from now perhaps they'll have decent dual-core LTE capable phones that are reliable and more efficient on battery by that time.
Hey all,
Im a sprint evo 4g owner, and am considering the razr maxx from verizon. Where I live here in maine, verizon has the best signal, and network reliability of all service providers.. or so I hear anyway...
On sprint, I roam prolly half the time, and anyone that has had sprint knows roaming speeds blow goat nads When I'm roaming and have full signal, I max out at 128kbps... Verizon guys I know out here get 1mbps +/- with 1-2 bars, add in the multiple dropped calls for seemingly no reason, and... I'm about done..
The evo has been a great phone, had it almost 2 years now, I rooted a lil over a year ago, and have pretty much got the full use out of it, considering its limitations from the network its on..
Guess what I wanna know from you guys is...
How is the network? Drop calls often for no reason? Data speeds pretty consistent?
How is verizons customer service? I've heard pretty horrible things about it, but never had any use myslef... I've found Sprint customer service to be great...
How is this phone in general? It has a huge battery so thats another plus... Even with my rooted evo running custom kernels/roms etc, the battery life leaves much desire... I see on verizons page that the maxx has up to 21.5 hrs talk time.. Thats about 3x what the evo was advertised for... Does it improve even more with custom roms/kernels?
Wifi hotspot and tethering.. I assume once I root, this will be easy enough, just like the evo?
Hdmi... does it work? Sprint shipped the evo with a useless hdmi out port... lol
Google voice... I will not be paying for text messaging, as I use gv for most texting now, does it play nice with the maxx? Also, how about sip calling? I have no signal at all at my house, so I use the wifi for gv, and sipgate, and just forward my calls to the gv #
I guess thats about it guys... I'm sure I'll think of more later, but I pretty much have my mind made up, unless some one points out that some of the thing I asked about simply wont work,,,
Thanks in advance
I actually just moved to a razr from Sprint last month. The speed difference is night and day. Customer service/support so far has been good. No complaints.
The network? 4g rocks. voice calls, never seem to drop. I have coverage in many places where I didn't before. Sound quality is about the same as sprint.
I have the razr, not maxx, so I can't speak to the size on it. I love the razr so far. HDMI out does work on the razr, so I'm assuming it does on the maxx as well. And yes, easy to root and do what you want to it
Motorola phones have the best signal strength of any phones, in addition to Verizon's network which is quite good.

Thanks for the replies!
4g wont matter much for me, as there is no lte in maine yet... Sprint does have wimax in select few spots here, and last year when I first tries it out, I was getting speed test result of 13mbps down, and 8mbps up, In those same places I now get get results of 1mbps op/down (I assume there is more use now), pretty weak considering thats what a good 3g speed should be... and dont even get me started on 3g speeds, or consistency... I notice huge changes while im sitting in the same place...
I never had good luck with motorola phones in the past (tho its been about 7-8 years since I've owned 1) But I hear they have come a long way, and they do hold signal better, or at least show your actual signal better...
I guess... really, I already know the network is gonna be better... cant b any worse, thats for sure... I just wanna make sure I'll be able to use the phone for the things I really need it for... ie:
Google voice - Heard mixed reviews of it with this device, some say it works fine for texting, some say not at all... are the "not at all" ppl just stupid? lol
Same with sip calling - does verizon prohibit it on their network, or block me from downloading the needed apps from the market? I know there are ways around that, but I like the idea of simplicity, which is why we own smart phones in the st place
Rooting; from what ive read, is not terribly difficult, although maybe a bit more involved than rooting my evo, so not too worried about that...
WiFi hotspot - I have no intentions of paying the $30/mo verizon wants for this service, as I hardly use it, but I need it to work when I do use it, and hell... If I'm paying for 10gb/mo of data, I'll use it however the hell I want ... This just as simple as the evo? (usually this feature is cooked into rooted roms on the evo)
Also the battery life - The only reason I'm even considering this device is the 21.5 hrs talk time, and huge 3300mah battery... So is it that great?
I guess those are the major things, the rest is prolly gonna be mostly based on opinion.
I am using the groove IP app. It is in the market. Yah Google brought it back. It let's you use voip with your Google voice. Call quality isn't too bad.
Yes the battery life is amazing. I can get 8 hours with crazy insane use and 4g on or be a tad more conservative by sticking to 3g and get 10-12 hours heavy usage. With texting over 3g with an app and browsing with juice defender I made it to 30% in 17 hours.

Wow!! that is unreal!! Even with my evo rooted, and me limiting and monitoring apps, etc... I'm lucky to get 4-5 hrs of heavy usage!!
As for the voip... I am using voice+ from play store now... Used to use gv callfree, but that was removed a while ago... call quality isnt too bad, but there is at least a 1sec delay... this could just be not enough cpu or ram causing that tho...
IMHO... wait to switch. This phone has been top of the tier list so long, it's run is bound to end soon. I advise waiting for something better, it should only be a month tops. even if if the GSIII isn't your cup of tea.
A quick look at coverage charts shows just how INSANELY more coverage you could get with verizon over sprint.
Like you, in my area Verizon has the best coverage and even amongst the verizon phones I've had (including a V3m Razr, EnVtouch and my current Razr Maxx) the Maxx is HANDS DOWN the best at reception night and day over the touch (which was one of the better reception wise), my envtouch wouldn't work till the very top of one hill on my drive to/from work and my Maxx works at the bottom of that hill in the valley several hundred feet lower (300-500 approx) and is intermittent in the valley itself, but NONE of the phones I've seen have had ANY service in that valley, and we don't even have 4G here yet.
I literally am amazed with all the places were this phone works, even at work where we have a small desktop cell repeater (single room style) my maxx works from atleast 50% further away from the repeater then my envtouch did.
It's a bit batter hungery but this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ndroid&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd is great for VOIP using your google voice number.
Wifi Tether is great for rooted phones to share the connection and works right out of the box without having to configure ANYTHING.
And if you download matt's DroidRAZRutility rooting is a BREEZE, literally hook up phone set it into USB debugging mode and click the choice for rooting, phone will reboot twice (IIRC) and about 5 minutes from when you started it, its done.

The other thing is... I really dont wanna wait... I dont see naything all that much better coming fro a while.. Maybe a droid whatever 1.5ghz dual core, but I dont see that being a whole lot better than a 1.2...
Idk... Anyone else think I should wait?
Dont see any great things coming from sprint any time soon, they got their heads stuck up their arses with the i-crap...

Exactly what I was hoping to hear! I dont need the next best thing... I just want something that works where/when I need it to, and having 3g everywhere I only have 1x now, is gonna be huge for me... It opens a whole new sales region for me....
I won't go to any other carrier until they offer unlimited data or at least reasonably priced tiered plans. I love paying $110 a month for unlimited for my wife and myself. It would be over $180 on Verizon.
I made the switch from the evo 3D to the RAZR and I'm one happy guy! Service here in northern Virginia is excellent compared to sprint,as well as 4g data speeds that top out at 20 something Mbs!!! No dropped calls, nothing so far! Call quality is crisp and clear. Now onto the phone....this is actually my first Motorola phone after the original RAZR ha! Build and quality wise its real good and durable, the only downside is (coming from a line of HTC phones) boot loaders are a complete ***** lol. Other than that, everything is A1 for me. I pay around $80 per month,I have the 420 or something min plan+6gb data plan + my men's wear house discount lol. Anything else you need to know, feel free to ask! that reminds me, If you've ever served in the military, bring your military ID to you local verizon and you can get something like 10-20% discount (can't remember exactly) off your monthly bill, something we just learned about when we were getting are Razr Maxx's activated.
If data and minutes bang for your buck is a major point I should also mention Straight Talk has an option now where you can take any cell that works on AT&T and put there sim card in it and have unlimted everything for 45 bucks a month, you might want to think about that if AT&T service is good enough in your area.
my wife and I both have the razr maxx and we regularly get 2 days out of the battery w/ moderate usage.. lots of texting, web use (4G for me at work).. streaming Slacker radio for 8 - 10 hrs while at work (to be fair, I cache the music to my sd card on wifi at home so I don't eat up my 4gigs)...
The battery life on the maxx is sick.
Been a long time sprint user and ROM flasher. Company moved to Verizon and I got the maxx until sgs3 drops. Great battery, development doesn't seem as active as the sprint devices were.

Just wanted to update on this...
I made the switch! And tho its only been less than 24hrs... I can already say I wont be looking back. The drive home from the verizon store was enough in itself to sell me on verizon, and this device! I get full signal 3g now, in places I either had no signal before, or a crappy roaming signal that was no reliable. I was actually able to stream pandora in my garage for a full 3 hrs!! My sprint evo wouldnt have even made thru one song... Aside from the unreal battery life (took off charger at 5pm yesterday, and still at 80%) the device dosent really seem any better than my evo was, but the difference in the network is night and day!
Anyway... thanks a lot guys! And once I get used to this phone, I will be in here looking to root it, and get rid of all this verizon bloat...

This was my big concern... I only get 5gb/mo... But... I never used more than 4 w sprint (mostly cuz their network is slow slow its almost impossible). so I will be keeping an eye on the data usage. From what the customer service rep said... verizon is changing their data rate plans, and tho no one really knows what they are changing, its pretty safe to say, they will be offering more data for the $... (I hope), and I will just change my data plan next month...
I have a Motorola photon from sprint which is almost the same as the razor. I'll say this about Motorola.... awesome phones right out of the box. Change the launcher to go launcher of launcher pro and the speed difference of the phone is night and day. Motorola does not want you unlocking the boot loader and running custom roms and to be honest there isn't any need to.
Root the phone through adb method and apply the water drop mod and download nebtop so you can use web top without a dock. I bought a $30 Bluetooth keyboard off amazon... its pretty nice when travel sling on the bike or just surfing the web in bed on the flat screen.
PS Google just bought Motorola so hopefully the development side of Motorola phones picks up soon.

I had an issue a couple of days ago with streaming Netflix over 4g and getting a network error message. Now, I'm reading posts on different forums about the Maxx having 4g/3g connection issues in general. Maybe it's the OCD in me, but after I read that stuff I started noticing that my phone would just randomly drop it's signal all of a sudden. Instead of making a seamless transition from 4g to 3g it just drops it's signal altogether. After a few seconds it comes back, but this still bothers me. In one of the forums that I read about this stuff a lot of the people were talking about trading the maxx for a bionic. Unfortunately for me....I already used up my 14 day one time trade with Best Buy when I switched the HTC Rezound for this. Ugh....I don't know what to do. I wanna be happy with this investment and I can't afford to cough up full retail price for any other phones. Anyway, have you guys heard about any of these connectivity issues so far? And if so, do know any means to fix it? Please help!

I have to settle on your side of the fence and agree that it seems like my Maxx has been, as of the past week or so, dropping service more frequently than I have noticed before. I am guessing this is possibly somehow network/carrier based for both of our better interests.

Well I had a couple of days of wonderful 4g service and it wasn't dropping out. Today (June 13th)....it started again. Starting at 10:15 am J had slower data speeds, 12:50 I received a Netflix communication error (code 1010), and roughly around 1:30 I had a 4g connection but it was no longer connecting with Google (which means I can't use stuff like the Google Play store). Of course Verizon technical support is no help. ALL of my problems are "new" to them and haven't been documented previously. I'm so sick of this! I just want my device to work properly!

I don't have anything to compare it against, but Verizon's LTE network always seems to be hit or miss with me. I can go days where its perfect, and weeks where I don't know if it'll let me use it or not.
And you're a Razr or Razr Maxx user?

I noticed this with the maxx last couple days. Switched to my Charge, doing the same thing. Also happening to family member on Thunderbolt. Its the 4g connection that's making this happen. If I switch to cdma only I have no issues
Update: 6-17-12
Switched back to razr because The Charge was holding signal pretty well. My Razr Maxx is still dropping data connection- the whole white 4g indicator more often. Anyone else still experiencing this?

I just sold my HTC Rezound and got my Razr Maxx from someone locally only about 5 days ago. In short, I miss my Rezound.
Before anyone jumps down my throat, let me explain. I am basing this solely off my experience at work where I spend 40+ hours of my week. Other than that, I really like this phone and want it to work out for me.
In my office here at work, I have always had bad reception with Verizon, regardless of the phone. It's just the way that this building is and the fact that there isn't a Verizon tower close enough to get good reception. Supposedly they are going to install a Verizon tower in our parking lot, but who knows when or if that will really happen.
With that being said, my Rezound held 4G for most of the day, albeit barely. But it did for most of my day and when it dropped 4G, the transition to 3G was pretty seamless.
With my Maxx, I am having major problems holding 4G or connectivity at all several times throughout my work day. If I open the Play Store or apps like Facebook, it will say no connection even when the 4G icon is visible. Then it will turn white at times too.
To its credit, I get good reception outside of work and at home which is true for every Verizon phone that I have owned (Incredible, Thunderbolt, Charge, Rezound).
So what gives? Without going back to a Rezound, what are my other options? The Nexus is much worse in this department correct?
Any advice would help, thanks!
Nexus is horrible in reception department. I know exactly what you mean with the white 4G no connection issue. I get it all the time too...even with 4G showing full bars. Also when I open the browser its just white and froze.

So, it's not just me? LOL
It's getting pretty ridiculous. Today I can barely do anything with it at work, it's not holding much of anything.
Is this a known network issue? Because if not, I will have to dump this phone unfortunately.
Yeah I don't know if it's the battery or what but 4G reception seems hit or miss on my Razr Maxx, it usually works great but in fringe areas it's shakier than I'd like.
That said, I use my office's wifi (where 4G reception sucks) and keep my phone on 3G unless I need to download things. So it isn't a huge issue.
I can't go back to a smaller battery, though.
Just as an update, the reception is embarrassingly bad today. I can't connect to anything data related. Connection keeps going in and out.
My Rezound would connect to everything daily. Only problem is that I don't want another Rezound lol.
Decisions, decisions....
the nexus has horrible signal issues, don't get one. as far as the maxx and signal/4g i get 10x better signal strength than i had with my rezound or nexus. if you want, install the .209 ics leak. it gave me much better 4g reception and speeds.
could also be you just do not have good verizon service where you are and no phone will fix that.

I definitely don't have good Verizon service where my office is located as I said in the OP. But, even with that said, my Rezound always held a data connection, and mostly 4G at that.
I have no idea why this phone with supposed better radios can't match that. It's very, very disheartening.
I will try the ICS leak. Is the .209 one the one where you can't go back to stock if you wanted to? That might be an issue for me.
Thanks!

Possible that Verizon is having an outage around you?

There is none that they know of. I went into a Verizon store tonight and they installed a new sim for me.
I have had strong signal since then, but I'm not at work and I usually get good signal at home.
If I don't have good signal tomorrow at work I will just have to face the sad reality that this phone won't play nice at work. Then I will have to make a decision from there.

Have you tried simply turning 4G off? Basically, go to the network settings and turn it to CDMA only, instead of CDMA+LTE. 2-3 bars of 3G is better than 0-1 bars of 4G. At least while you're at work.
Are you sure it's not a defective unit?

It happen on my atrix 2 too.
Before i was using htc hero and it held 3g in my office even it only 1 or 2 bar,but with my atrix 2 it stay on edge and sometimes no connectivity. I guess motorola has bad antenna and i'm planning to get htc rezound.
Sorry for my bad english.

That's the thing, Motorola is top notch with antennas, HTC is next best, as I have the Rezound, signal is great but I'm still leading towards defective unit.

Have you tried this? Should do the trick.

I put 3 on my back cover, but no luck.
I keep awaiting for bootloader unlock for razr and atrix 2,maybe custom kernel will do some trick on signal to keep hold on 3g although it's only 1 or 2 bar. Because from my experience, motorola will get no connectivity when it drop to 2 or 1 bar of 3g.

Do what? Put that sticker on my back cover? Actually i really did it,i even add a piece of aluminium foil to get more signal. LOL
Let's laugh together
That's is the stupid idea that i did to get the phone hold on 3g,and if you read our atrix2 forum, most of us got a bad data connectivity.
I'll wait until ics comes out,if it still have a lock bootloader or connection issue, then maybe i'll jump to another boat (no more moto, this is the last)

It might possibly be, but I'm not leaning towards that as I'm getting good reception and connection at home.
It's only happening at work where nobody gets good Verizon signal to begin with. Only problem is my rezound was holding enough signal and not dropping but this phone is dropping.
My conclusion so far is that the rezound holds weak signals better and the MAXX just drops them.

Droid Life came out with a full review today. The battery life is quite good according to them (average life of 21 hours), but surprisingly he reported some 4G drop issues and said the camera wasn't that great. I'm hoping the signal was just a fluke, but it seems to be since other big reviewers have said it's top notch.

I saw it, and though meh on the 4G drop. It could have easily been in his area. Of all the reviews I've seen he was the only one to have that issue. I also thought the photo samples he had were really not as bad as he described them to be either.
As much as I want to jump on this phone, the only issue I seem to have now is storage space. It's this or the GN2. I still don't know?
8192 on Quads! Thanks sick!
Damn it when will Wednesday get here??!??!!!?!?!!
I actually experience the 3g/4g drop often on my galaxy nexus and I live in the bay area. Definitely sucks my battery to oblivion. Since HTC is said to make better radios I hope the drops would be less frequent.

I wouldn't worry about it, when I got the GNex I my thunderbolt up and running for a couple days and the radios are noticeably stronger and more stable on the Thunderbolt. Side by side I'd get solid 4g on the bolt where the GNex was spotty at best. My house isn't the in the strongest 4g area, but the Tbolt wouldn't drop off the signal no matter where in my home I was. The GNex I get 4g outside or by windows and that's it, with 3g speeds. The tbolt would pull a solid 12-15up 3-5down sitting right next to it.
Not to mention the GNex isn't exactly known for its radios.

The review doesn't talk about any drops in the traditional sense, but rather that the phone was "dropping back" to 3G in weak 4G areas:
I constantly found the device dropping back to 3G, even when other devices were maintaining a 4G connection, albeit a poor one at that.

This is something that is done on purpose in order to maintain a more reliable connection without as many actual drops when switching between 3G and 4G. With my Rezound, Galaxy Nexus, and RAZR MAXX, when I would be out on the edge of a 4G area, the phone would jump back and forth between 3G and 4G, resulting in actual drops in service and a drain on the battery. My S3 does what the DNA does - opts to stick with 3G in weak 4G areas. The result is a far more stable connection with less drops in service and much less battery drain.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Only dropping down from 4G. He said that you can't disable 4G though, but I'm guessing there will be a non-stock way of doing it.

I thought the pictures looked great, but I'm also comparing them to my 2.5 year old Incredible so pretty much any high end phone, besides maybe Motorolas, will look great to me lol

man i really hope there will be a way you can disable 4G whenever you want. that'd be so useful if i needed to conserve battery and i'm in a spotty 4G area

Pretty much every LTE phone released on Verizon over the past several months hasn't had the option to disable LTE in the stock settings. Even some phones that used to have the option have had it removed in updates (such as the RAZR and RAZR MAXX). But with all of these phones, there have been ways of putting the phone into 3G only mode without root via an app or through settings that can be accessed through the phone's dialer.
