Droid Razr Maxx connectivity issues - Motorola Droid RAZR

I had an issue a couple of days ago with streaming Netflix over 4g and getting a network error message. Now, I'm reading posts on different forums about the Maxx having 4g/3g connection issues in general. Maybe it's the OCD in me, but after I read that stuff I started noticing that my phone would just randomly drop it's signal all of a sudden. Instead of making a seamless transition from 4g to 3g it just drops it's signal altogether. After a few seconds it comes back, but this still bothers me. In one of the forums that I read about this stuff a lot of the people were talking about trading the maxx for a bionic. Unfortunately for me....I already used up my 14 day one time trade with Best Buy when I switched the HTC Rezound for this. Ugh....I don't know what to do. I wanna be happy with this investment and I can't afford to cough up full retail price for any other phones. Anyway, have you guys heard about any of these connectivity issues so far? And if so, do know any means to fix it? Please help!

I have to settle on your side of the fence and agree that it seems like my Maxx has been, as of the past week or so, dropping service more frequently than I have noticed before. I am guessing this is possibly somehow network/carrier based for both of our better interests.

Well I had a couple of days of wonderful 4g service and it wasn't dropping out. Today (June 13th)....it started again. Starting at 10:15 am J had slower data speeds, 12:50 I received a Netflix communication error (code 1010), and roughly around 1:30 I had a 4g connection but it was no longer connecting with Google (which means I can't use stuff like the Google Play store). Of course Verizon technical support is no help. ALL of my problems are "new" to them and haven't been documented previously. I'm so sick of this! I just want my device to work properly!

I don't have anything to compare it against, but Verizon's LTE network always seems to be hit or miss with me. I can go days where its perfect, and weeks where I don't know if it'll let me use it or not.

And you're a Razr or Razr Maxx user?

I noticed this with the maxx last couple days. Switched to my Charge, doing the same thing. Also happening to family member on Thunderbolt. Its the 4g connection that's making this happen. If I switch to cdma only I have no issues
Update: 6-17-12
Switched back to razr because The Charge was holding signal pretty well. My Razr Maxx is still dropping data connection- the whole white 4g indicator more often. Anyone else still experiencing this?

Dropping data

Just got my Razr yesterday. YAAAY!!
I'm coming from a Droid Charge and am excited about the big step forward with the Razr. One problem I'm having, thought, is that i'm losing my data connection quite often. I was under the impression that this phone would be better at holding a signal than my Charge was, but so far its quite a bit worse.
I'm noticing that when the connection is good, the 4G icon turns blue. Then I will see it turn white, then disappear altogether. Usually a reboot fixes it for a while. Anybody else seeing this behavior?
Thanks,
Blue

No 4g in my area so I cannot verify that part but in the 28 hours I have owned my Razr it has dropped data 5 times. Toggling airplane mode seems to correct this issue but, coming from a DX that only dropped data a handful of time in a year and a half, this is a little disheartening.
That happened to me a lot a month ago... would drop data like no tomorrow ... Arctic rom fixed most of the problems...
I still have random drops where I should get data (s2 catches it fine)...
But I'm assuming until they release an updated radio... wont see any fixes
I haven't had dropped data since I've had my phone its been almost a month. I'm only on 3g.

I get the same problem. Especially when I tether (Legally). Its to the point Im trying to get rid of the Razr. Solid built phone but from the locked bootloader to the data issues I think it might be time for me to move on.
I have yet to have this problem in my area (only 3g) but in the city about an hour away I did drop data while using 4G. While at home I also keep it in 3g only.

I have had very similar issues. I am in a decent 4g area and have had my razor for a week now and am thinking about returning it. Its happened on both 3g and 4g. I had a rezound prior to this and never had issues like this with data dropping. I returned the rezound due to overheating and random boot looping. Not sure what to get. May look into Droid 4 but wondering about Moto. Now.

As a person working in the telecom industry with LTE, the data drops that you mentioned happens only if the device is idle for a certain period (10 seconds) and there are more users in that cell than what it can handle..
One Cell right now can handle max 200 Connected users..if your operator is using older versions then it can be 20 even.....
The typical timeout value is set as 10 seconds..that is if the mobile unit does not do any activity , then the connection will be dropped off....
You need to remember that 4G or LTE is not like 3G which enables you to stay connected always..it is only meant for data applications and it is strictly on-demand....at least now, till Voice Over Generic LTE Access (VOLGA) is rolled out.....
Some device manufacturers mimic the presence of 4G, but displaying the LTE/4G symbol, even if it is not connected to the network. It shows the presence of the radio only......
---------- Post added at 12:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:27 PM ----------
Actually while analyzing one major issue during a football match in US, we found out that there is too many connected users and very less amount of data....
This is not a very good implementation by Mobile Phone companies and they need to change the algo... Moto I hope has done a better job...
I got brave and jumped into the future...
4G is rocking and rolling now, and no data-drop outs all day. OTA should be coming soon.
Same for me yesterday. I am likeing At&T/s2 better and better with just about every thing. I am past my 14days, but as soon as someing comes out with unlimited LTE and Is better or as good as my s2 I will get rid of this nightmare of a phone and maybe even the big red.
P.S I know the big red has a lot of fan's like apple does, but it is what it is.
Try updating to 2.3.6, here, this has helped a lot with the updated software and radio it included. I have also experienced very good battery life.
This is a leaked update but does offer needed improvements. However, unlike the Bionic the razr able to fastboot back to factory stock and then accept OTA upgrades. So when something official, or ICS comes out no need to worry with the bootloader being locked.
Just started dropping data I think I might try the leaked update.

[Q] Just ordered a Razr Maxx

Can anyone provide any helpful tips for it, or have any gotcha's to avoid?
Thanks
Honestly, I think the best advice is to read up on the razr/maxx in the xda forums and elsewhere online (droidrazr.com comes to mind).
I just activated my Maxx today. I choose it after doing a fair bit of research and reading the forums I've already mentioned. There's no shortcut to becoming well informed on a topic.

The network has been funky here around Nashville too. Totally pisses me off when that happens!
I'm loving the MAXX though, AWESOME battery life!
The Verizon 4G network isnt all its cracked up to be with IMO. They say its great and all but have read several different things. All of course Im sure have something else to say. I was told or read whichever that if you keep your phone in 4g/3g mode and not in a 4g area that helps to drain the battery as its always looking for a 4g tower. Since not all areas have 4g its best to turn it off unless you are in an area. I have had several outages just like everyone else. My wife travels the country and has on more than one occasion were it says it has a 4g signal but nope.
On a side note I just but the Maxx and am loving it.
Just curious what the 3G speeds are like, so if you disable 4G due to being in a fringe area, is 3G still decently fast or does it really suck?
I did a speed test on 3g earlier today and, got 1mb down & 0.90mb up.
RAZR MAXXimum
Vzw 3g is waaay faster than sprint ever was for me on 3g.

4G/3G/1x

I have an unrooted Droid Razr and anytime I am in Verizon's Extended network I drop all data. The signal strength fluctuates from -67 to -99. Most of the time while I travel it is between -75 and -90. I have enabled the global roaming and I changed the voice privacy settings after I looked on the forums. Any ideas of things to try? When I contacted Verizon they suggested they could have lost their "agreements" with the other carriers to cover 3g. Two weeks ago I was using a Droid Charge and it worked fine.
Same here. When I first got this phone about 2 weeks ago I had a strong 4g connection which would rarely drop to 3g, but for some reason now I'm constantly dropping all data connection and its draining the hell out of my battery since the phone is constantly searching for a connection. I'm on a stock razr running. 2.3.6. Anyone have any ideas?

Exactly what i'm going through I've gotten a replacement razr Maxx from Verizon thinking it might be a bad phone but the replacement is loosing signal just the same way.someone please help!

Had this problem a few days ago, but haven't had a problem in 3-4 days. Been getting great signal and data speeds lately.
I rebooted my phone this morning and so far so good. I haven't dropped my 4g connection yet. Battery life is still at 91% coming off the charger at 7:30 CST this morning.
Edit : this is a maxx

My wifes phone is complete stock and has been having data drops and restarts. Never dropped or anything done to it. Gonna have to call Verizon.
I have dealing with the same crap, look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1549021
Most of the time, it happens at 24h-36h up time, but can happen at 10min or wait 50hours. I have not droped data for a few days, but have not used the phone much at all.
P.S I am NOT in a Verizon's Extended network area. I am in a 3-4 bar place or even right next to a cell tower with 5bars.( That is BS)
I was tolled that I use the phone too MUCH and I need to turn it off EVERY night. Now I am thinking AT&T with galaxy s3 is the "fix" I need to get a LTE phone that works right.

Mobile internet connection randomly goes out

I just got my Droid RAZR 2 days ago. For some reason, the 4G LTE randomly drops out. Sometimes, it won't even come back on at all and I have to reboot the phone to get my connection back. I have service because I still get text messages and phone calls. This is getting really annoying, especially when I'm out and about and away from my home Wi-Fi.
I have already downloaded and installed the connectivity restore app from Verizon's Play Store page, but it didn't help. Any other suggestions?

I just had this exact same thing happen to me. I'm in Anaheim, CA. Figured it was a network outage, of course Verizon always denies any outages just like Sprint did for 3 years.
Eventually, after about 1 hour, 5 reboots and that connectivity app, it just came back on.
Who knows..
Idowhatiwant...i know how it is. Im in the same area. But this has been goibg on for a least a month now.

Yep, appears so. Back to 3G now lol..
Got my Maxx about a week ago. I also have a similar (or maybe the same) situation where the 4G LTE icon turns white, but there is no data connection (WiFi off). I did some searching online and found that apparently a lot of Verizon LTE phones have the same problem, so I don't know whether this is a software or hardware problem. However, I did see that many people got their phone to get the connection back with a CDMA/LTE toggle on/off (found in Settings). Hopefully Verizon is working on an update for this.
I think, from what I've observed, it has trouble switching from 3G to 4G and vice-versa. At home, I'm right on the edge of a 4G area, so my phone constantly switches back and forth between 3G and 4G. That's when the data drops. When I have solid 4G connection, the data doesn't drop.

Welcome to Verizon LTE.
It's a problem with the handshake protocol from eHRPD to LTE. Not likely to be fixed entirely until Verizon rolls out an LTE-Advanced network and phases out CDMA altogether.

It's not all bad news. The newer phones timeout much less when trying to hold connection and authenticate faster than the first-gens (Charge, Tbolt, etc), and even better than they did at launch (in the case of the Bionic, for example, which uses the same Moto Wrigley 4G chip as the Razr and others). It'll only get better with successive releases.

RAZR dropping data

I just got off the phone with vzw about my RAZR dropping data randomly. If your having this problem just download the restore connectivity app. And the tech support guy said that ics is supposed to be released in a couple of weeks but I have my salt ready.

didnt want to start a new thread, but my phone after the latest update keeps dropping data and im fed up with it. this is the third razr ive had. one for hardware, one for a couple areas of dead pixels or groups of pixels, now my phone wont stay connected to data, just randomly dropping data and then picking it back up. ive had to call customer support three times for it, this time i had to boot it into safe mode, and now get to play the waiting game. ive heard people on here rave about the motorola antennas, but ive yet to be impressed. As far as i can tell thisphone is a complete peace of crap. And verizon support hasnt done anything to fix it. I used to rave about verizons technical support, now it feels like they dont care. After my contract is up bye bye verizon. Bye bye motorola. I would cancel right now and just use my vita with skype as a phone, but i got apps i would miss. Ive had palm pres that have had way better hardware design and build quality then this piece of ****.
I've had four LTE phones now and the data issues existed on all of them but have gotten less noticeable with each passing month (the Droid Charge was a nightmare until the day I got rid of it, though). People treating it as a phone issue cost warranty support money and wastes time- what you need is a network technician, not a refurbished phone.

At this point i need a new phone. Ive installed the useless restore connectivity app, tried removing and reinstalling my sim card, and now im running it in safe mode, all verizon ideas from customer support, and except for safe mode cuz ive not had the time, have failed. Im running bone stock non root and cant get anywhere with technicians. As ive said, my phone drops data and then a minute later picks it back up. The latest customer support person thought itmight be a roamong issue, evn though it happens when im not moving, as far as i can tell.
First, what's your signal strength? Anything under ~-95dBm isn't enough to maintain a reliable LTE connection. It'll connect but it will occasionally lose it. This tends to waste battery, as well. When they started rolling out LTE I was on the fringe of the coverage area, but they've updated a few of their towers since then. I will still lose data when driving through certain parts of town, but it reconnects quickly.
As far as the roaming issues go, that's a simple one to rule out. Call back and ask what your PRL should be. If it doesn't match the one in your About screen in Settings, turn the phone off, pull the SIM, power on, and shut down and put it back in- it should update. Doesn't make much of a difference in most circumstances, and the phone is supposed to update it automatically on every boot, but it's worth a try.
If you really just want a replacement phone without any more tech support BS, tell them the phone is overheating and rebooting. They'll tell you to take it into the store, where they will check for water damage and then order you a new phone without any further questions. You could also request to be transferred to Tier 2-- they're the ones that know what they're talking about (generally).
Also, if you have the same issue with 3 different phones, it's policy to offer you a switch to a different model (or an early upgrade, depending on what your contract dates look like) under most circumstances. I will tell you that whatever issues you've been having, if you want a 4G phone, there is no better current combination than Motorola and Verizon. I've seen the alternatives and they're not pretty.
its at 85 in my living room with three bars of data. If it was low coverage it should; especially after the last update; be almost no bars at all and just dropdown to 3g service instead of dropping all data.

I have seldom found that to be true, strangely. Mine will try re-authenticating on 4G two or three times before deciding 3G is better- then it will still toggle back and forth, and every time it switches from 4G to 3G it loses connection for a few seconds. It's an issue with the network architecture more than anything else- eHRPD is a stopgap solution and hopefully will be phased out soon, as LTE becomes universal and LTE-Advanced enters the picture.
oh ok.

I can honestly say if they hadn't enticed me with faster datas I would still be using a Droid Incredible. The RAZR is fine-- the 3 other phones I had to go through to get one that worked (and realize it was probably the network all along) weren't worth the pain, though.

same here. If i could activate a pallm pre 3 on verizon id be using that right now. But asit stands, the data speeds are nice, but arent worth it compared to constantly loosing data or all the network troubles verizons had activating there network. Though those are probably from there blazingly fast rollout rather then hardware on there end.

my second had two dead pixels this one has one but during normal opperation isnt noticable. though im ready to try and trade this for a galaxy nexus or cancel my contrqct and buy one straight from google. the main reason i bought this phone over the gnex was the sd card and thinking that it would be upgraded to ics rather quickly. fhe screen resolution and size are non issues for me. at this point there really isnt a lot to distinguish the screens unless you are a real power user, most wouldnt know that the razr has a lower pixel count and density.
