Best TaskSwitcher / Manager for Smartflip ?? - HTC Startrek

Just bought the Smartflip for my Wife. Personally I have the Jasjar.
Would really appreciate suggestions for a good task manager. Tried omega one's battery pack smartphone edition but does not work well. Think it is too heavy and slows down the device to an unacceptable level and also hangs.
May be something more lighter and able to close tasks which go in the background is required.
Thanks in advance for your valuable input.
Regards

I would personally suggest the one which is shipped with the device...
It's fast enough... Gives you many other information about memory status and can quickly close one or all open tasks...
When you exit it, it really exits also...
It's not really common, but this time it seems the enclosed utility is not so bad... ;-)
Have a try.
Ciao

I've always used XBar3.
It sits sort of underneath the homescreen. You call it up by holding down the select button.

UI for sausage figers.

Greetings all:
I have just rec'd an 8525, unlocked and cutom ROM'd.
I am interested in the following: is there a cab file or change I can make in order to make the touchscreen phone dial numbers bigger. I have rather large fingers and dialing with the screen is somewhat difficult. I had read that the Tmo MDA had a hack for the UI making this poss., but I am clueless how to do this if at all poss. for this phone.
Could anyone lend any assistance with this req. as it is one of the only things I am currently not liking about the device. Changing this would take away some operating stress. My thanks in advance for any directions.
Cheers
do a search for dialer skins, or dial pads, and you are going to find some with large numbers on it..
Ah, my thanks, I did as you suggested and I found exactly what I questioned about.
Cheers
u could always do some finger excerises with the lady friend as your assistant if u wanna turn those sausage fingers into trim fingers... lol sorry i had to
ROFLMAO
Forgot to ask., what skin is the biggest dialing screen going? Certainly want to maximize my landscape so I dont have to install 40 of them.... well you get the idea.
Would anyone mind pointing me in the right direction, or link to the largest dialing screen out there.
My thanks in advance.
Alternatively rather than looking for skins why don't you give Smart Dialer 2 a try. You can find a free trial version at www.pocketpc.myluckypda.com.
This program apart from giving you large buttons for dialing also supports smartdialing, sending SMS to any of your contacts directly from the dialer and what I liked most the possibility to add new contacts directly from the dialer.
The downside is that it increases your booting time by 8 seconds and consumes about 1.3 MB of RAM.
Another very good large button dialer is Imaginet Fingerclix. This does not consume any RAM as it does not stay resident all the time and is only called up when you require it. The downside is that it may be a bit sluggish for your taste.
Regards
Got, it I will look at both of these. Much appreciated.

responsive dialer

does anyone know of a responsive dialer? I am looking for an original looking(bigger buttons would be nice) dialer that doesnt have a delay between pressing and recognition/drawing/tone. The lag time on all the dialers i have used seems excessive. I wonder why, as response to screen presses are quite snappy otherwise.
sorry I am no help here..............I would like to see a dialer that is more responsive too. I imagine it has something to do with how fast the processor can process the little app's requests...........not too fast it appears.
i dont know about wm6, but i'm using wm5 and turning off smartdialing helps A LOT, well not much help if you do use smartdialing...

I gained some speed by deactivating the sound of the keys when you press them
I did global search on the forum and found this one, so I'll just add comment on this one rather than creating a new thread

i only got a tiny bit improvement, my cheap nokia 3210 that came with T-mobile pre-paid card was MUCH MUCH MORE responsive!!!
I'm totally frustrated, it took up to 3 seconds to dial 1 number, consider the following:
- in order to improve the performance I need to turn the key sound off, so I have to keep looking at my screen
- pressing a button can fail altogether or can work with delay
- if i don't see the number you pressed immediately on the screen I have 2 options:
-- press again, but this can work OR create DOUBLE PRESSES
-- wait and see if it's just a delay, sometimes i wait only to see that I NEED TO PRESS AGAIN
this is OK when i don't badly need the phone "feature" and all the other bells and whistles distract me from thinking I'm supposed to have a dependable phone in this stupid device.
let me know if there's any smarter way around this and how do you guys deal with this? is iphone much more responsive when it comes to phone?
I think the real problem is that MS really doesn't care. If iphone (my wife has one) could do decent secure exchange I would dump this turkey of a phone and go that route. It is excellent as aphone except for the lack of voice commander and most of the pda functions are great as well. I n fact ifyou eliminate the ability to add a bunch of beta aps that are trying to imitate the user interface of a competing product, and screw up you r phone after a couple of days, what is the advantage of a wm platform?

[UPDATED 24.12.10] TG01 battery life - an experiment, an observation

Update on 24.12.10 - My phone hasn't frozen or switched off on it's own since I made these changes! The battery life constantly stays real good. I have only charged my battery up to 100% TWICE in 4 days!! I think this trick works! I will really appreciate if more testers come forward and help us test this
What will this mean?
This will mean that we can make TG01 battery stay minimum of 24 hours and maximum upto 38-40 hours with good amount of browsing, calls, texts, games, ALSO keep exchange sync on forever!!
In total before my battery completely died, I was able to do the following:
2357 minutes of stand-by (includes the activities as well)
137 minutes of browsing
3 Downloads (total less than 10MB)
180 minutes of calls
36 text messages
21 email downloads using Exchange sync - that was ON all the time
60 minutes of gaming
18 pictures taken using camera
12 minute video recorded using camera
1 round of back up and virus scan
This is what I've done:
Installed SPB Shell here
Removed Taskbar (was a cab file in miROM4 that I am using)
Removed Start Menu (I have attached cab that I used to remove start menu)
Before you remove start menu or taskbar - PLEASE make sure you have full functioning SPB Shell installed. You will loose WinMo start menu and notifications (see attached pic) so you will rely solely on SPB Shell ONLY
On miROM4 by removing start menu and taskbar the original free RAM (96MB) increases upto 105+MB - I don't know how, I don't know why. This is my observation and testing! When you install SPB Shell, you will notice the RAM going down to 78-80MB on boot. - I don't think it's bad either.
Now you might wonder what's so different.
Someone did an experiment showing that by running apps the battery drain was 20% compared to stock ROM
Another experiment also led to show that battery drain mostly is not a ROM issue
I am no tech, I am no expert. This is my pure observation and my experimentation with TG01. I know the links I've quoted are for HTC mainly, but I suppose theory still stays. If any one is willing to replicate those experiments on their TG01 please feel free to collaborate with me.
I have updated all my uses on TG01 between 100% battery and 0% battery.
After 100% charging the battery,
Just to re-fresh what I have done with it apart from leaving it on 'stand-by'
I am running SPB Shell with it.
Using Opera 10 browser for facebook, bing, google (approx browsing 97 minutes till now)
I have read news on Evening standard and BBC (approx time 35 minutes till now)
I have downloaded recipe for 2 cocktails
I have made 6 (appox. 147 minutes in total) phone calls
I have sent 31 text messages
My active sync is on since 10pm as I have set my exchange email retrieval 'as item arrives' - so it has downloaded 14 email items at different times. Experiments have shown that results are quite bad when it comes to using Exchange Active Sync schedule 'as item arrives'
I have played Sudoku (about an hour)
I have left my backlight at 70% (on SPB you have an option)
My battery life after 18 hours 30 minutes is 80% with free ram of 78-80% without any processes running i.e. on stand-by!!
1 call (33 minutes long)
5 text messages
2 games (56 minutes total) of puzzle
Facebook using Opera 10 (updated status, replied few messages, browsed mainly)
Downloaded tube map from a website using Opera 10
Took about 18 pictures using TG01
Cleaned RAM, Virus scanned and did an online back up.
After 27 hours 22 minutes - my battery life remaining is 50%
Made 0 phone calls, 0 texts
My active sync downloaded 7 emails
I checked XDA website for about 20 odd minutes using Opera 10
I used facebook for 10 minutes using Opera 10
I recorded a video of length 12 minutes
All this time my wifi and data connections were switched 'ON'
39 hours 17 minutes - my battery is 0% and my TG01 switched off!!
Putting all these links together, I think if ROMs don't affect the battery drain, but by removing these two elements if my phone survives in adverse conditions i.e. exchange email (shown above link) and running apps/games (shown above link) - then it had to be either of these two elements or settings behind them that drain our TG01's battery!
EDIT: Yes, Oly after removing taskbar, when we press on 'Start button' it freezes the mobile. We don't need to remove battery to get rid of the freeze. Just few seconds and it comes back to normal. But to avoid that occuring, I used the attached cab. That cab removes start menu from the face of my WinMo. PS: This cab is NOT my creation. I have found it on XDA. ALL the credit for this cab goes to NRGZ28 - this cab will prevent making RegEdits

I had DarkNinja task bar pre installed as cab from miROM4 - I removed it. It sort of 'disables' the start menu, but after that I removed start menu using one of the 'remove start menu keep x button' cabs and then eventually even removed 'x' button most programs respond to <- key at bottom.
I could attach cabs if you want but basically removing taskbar will remove all your icons on top and just leave the clock - it makes SPB Shell look nicer as well!
It been 27 hours and 21 minutes as I type and my phone's battery is 50%. I am going to edit the amount of tasks I have done in these 27 hours.
Hey drupa2drupad! Nice thread! I'm using similiar methods to you, but my battery is still awful! what battery are you on? Im on the stock toshiba one... i have spb shell running, opera 9.7 for abt 10-15 minutes, and the battery is 90% and opera 9.7 is meant to be more friendly for the battery,,, i have also diasabled the start emnu... i have had this layout for many months now and cannot reach battery levels as good as yours!

Hi Oly,
I am using stock toshiba as well - the one that came with my phone.
Did you remove the taskbar too? I am meaning to upload a screenshot of how my phone looks without taskbar. I am inclined to believe it's got something to do with removal of taskbar more than removing start menu. I have tried removing start menu on it's on and I had same result - Opera 10, draining 10% every 20 to 30 minutes of browsing.
I had desire taskbar installed as cab, I removed it! I am going to get some screen shots in first post
Hi Drupad,
Nice thread!! One thing I noticed was that disabling the start menu also gives 15-20mb free ram and it significantly improves battery life, disabling the sleep mode led and turning on wifi when not needed also helps!
P.S: After disabling windows start menu, I overided it with SPB Menu which is now my default Start Menu!

Hmmmm... I wonder how the taskbar removal makes a big impact on the battery life! I can understand the start menu, basically all your icons in the start menu are cached into the ram, so removing it will consume less resources , more battery life etc etc. But how doesit work with the taskbar? Im using the stck taskbar on Mangosora's 6.5.3 build with spb shell + mobilesense.

Yes i did that too on ffboys 6.5 rom(spb menu for startmenu) unfortunately it does not work for 6.5.3
Drupad, im guessing when u use the phone now, pressing the start softkey freezez your device?
Use the reg tweak to make the start button disappear (like the HD Mini)
You can find it by searching on the forum,
'HD Mini Start Key disabler' (something like that)

Probably, the battery difference is due to the start menu alone and not the taskbar because he removed both.

Yeah even Oly suggested he had free RAM (15MB) on disabling start menu so am sure about RAM now. I did use Wifi most of the time as well as data connection when I used Opera 10 for browsing. Did not disconnect data connection because it reconnected immediately - reason being my exchange sync set to 'retrieve as item arrives'
My start menu is SPB Menu as well Looks cooler, non-WinMo sort as well

I don't know if taskbar has got much to do with battery, but I did see quite a few reg-entries i.e. magnification etc - do they relate to taskbar? By removing taskbar, do I essentially switch these flickers off? Do you think anything i.e. notifications etc are being cached in ram as well? (non-educated guess!)

I have attached the cab in first post - this is the one I used to get rid of 'start' button completely. Yes my phone did freeze for few seconds to upto a minute, but came back to normal as soon as my screen locked! But after this cab, no problem at all! I think you can definitely have SPB menu as start menu - as it has got everything you need! I have 6.5.3 miROM4 as well and I was able to do it and use it flawlessly. I will try to put some more screenshots

I agree it has to be start menu but don't know if it's alone because Oly has disabled start menu for quite a few months now and he din't seem to notice this drastic change :s

hi drupad! sorry i had a typo in my other post... i was meant to say i can sucessfully disable the start menu on 6.5.3/6.5.5 , but i cannot get it to open up the spb menu in the spb settings. there is no option for it... i will try and post screenshots soon! also i have been using this technique for months and having noticed a battery performance increase because i thought it was to do with the ROM i changed from ... i guess it does make a big difference! i will try and disable my task bar and report back! im not to sure if disabling the task bar stops your notifications caching in the RAM. perhaps someone else could help us out?

Thanks a lot for that mate will update first post tonight when I reach home! I wish more users could test this and give feedback.
I might have just made this battery issue 'not so severe' any more with these observations!!
Another thing I just realized is I haven't restarted my phone at all - The last time I switched off my phone was when I completely ran out of battery during this 'experiment'!
My phone seems to have stopped freezing. Its 4th day now!!

Hi.
I do not belive in miracles in electricty area but decided to sacrifice myself and test miROM4. I remove wm start by mirolg .cab "miROM_MMLauncher_Mod_Startmenu_Replacement.cab" and removed "Dark NInja Android xxxxxx". I did only "natural" test so far, by configuring SPB for my purposes
what took several minutes of time and battery has lost 20% . ( in my appinion quite normal for 1000mAh battery because of backlight was still on and few minutes of GPRS and Wi-Fi was done and this is what I observed on any ROM I tested so far).
Anyway, now I am charging battery to 100% and will do some more tests.
What annoy me after removing task bar is that I have not any information whether I have active GPRS or Wi-Fi connection and I have not any speed mechanism to disconnect ( what could be done very simply via notification bar). Have You got any idea what to with it ? Maybe SPB has any widget for it ?

Hi fxdjacentyfxd
I din't really look into monitoring speed of connections. I used widgets to mIake sure how much battery I have, if I am connected to wifi or not. When I was connected to data connection - I just checked if I am connected or not by using 'Connections' in the settings.
I am keeping my backlight at 30% now most of the time. I have seen even 10% makes it better, but my eyes don't really like that dark so I keep it 30%. May be that will help as well?
I have used it this way since - and also changed to miROM10 now, and still don't charge my battery at least before 30 hours of use! - which I find to be good battery life for daily smart phone use
Good luck and thanks for trying this, will wait for your feedback

Some software are able to connect via GPRS automatically and disconnect too after exit ( Palringo ) but most of them not. So I would like to have such fast way to disconnect ( I did not check - battery is still charging in shutdown - but mentioned "Connections" have not ability to disconnect from GPRS ?. As I remember there are three fields Phone, BT and W-Fi. Wi-Fi shows connected or not and one can switch-off wi-fi . It is not the same as as disconnect but better this than nothing.
Phone only shows that whole GSM radio is on not GPRS connection.
Anyway, maybe You know any kind of software that allows to manage GPRS-Wi-Fi. It does not has to be in upper bar. It is enough I will put it on SPB window.

Yes in my oppinion ( I was dealing with other "small" devices like PNA and PDA ) backlight is factor thar can dramatically make battery live longer. No wonder , it requires a lot of energy.
I guess that You ensured very good conditions for Your experiemnts. I mean very good quality of GSM and Wi-Fi signal which may cause the transcievers on tg01 could work with low power. It is in my oppinion second main factor. In bad conditions GSM can "eats" even 1-2 W of power.

Do You want to say that with miROM10 You have the same good result as with miROM4 without removing task bar and wm menu ?
Recently I tested miROM11 ( as mirolg said there are only minor changes in comparison to miROM10 ) but I am rather disappointed. Not stable. Eats battery as any other ROM.

[Q] A Few Questions on Apps and Rooting

Hey guys just got a few quick questions, I know there is a likelihood this has been discussed elsewhere but I've not found the resources.
As much as I enjoy seeing a green battery icon ... it isn't of much use without a value. What's the best way to change this icon BUT without flashing a custom ROM, I like my ROM the way it is.
It appears I messed up in uninstalling the apk files ont he stock ROM as I removed the Task Manager, what apps can I use o replace this. I just want something I can use to switch between apps and is BOUND to the home button (long press).
I'm considering removing the camera app and sticking with Camera360 as my ONLY camera app, would this be a good idea. I'm assuming the latter has the originals feature set and much much more so I'm not losing anything at all. Given I've updated the firmware the quality should improve regardless of which app I use right?
Can someone please explain to me why there are 4 voice apps?
On my Desire I remember I could tell the phone NOT to sleep if it were charging, but I can't seem to find this option anywhere, does anyone know the exact location or is there an alternative app?
Is it just me, or does the normal OTA software update option not work? I tried it several times yesterday and I either got a failed connection or it just hung and did nothing ...
On my Desire I had a custom ROM and when I pressed the off button I got an option to reboot, any idea where I can get that option back?
I know since 2.2 they removed the vib->silent->normal settings when changing volume but I really need to use silent sometimes anyone know a way round this?
That's most of my questions for now, thanks for your help guys :-D.
This is interesting because I am very interested in most of these questions as well. Here is my opinions on each.
As much as I enjoy seeing a green battery icon ... it isn't of much use without a value. What's the best way to change this icon BUT without flashing a custom ROM, I like my ROM the way it is.
-There is battery icon mods, search for it in the Theme section
It appears I messed up in uninstalling the apk files ont he stock ROM as I removed the Task Manager, what apps can I use o replace this. I just want something I can use to switch between apps and is BOUND to the home button (long press).
-The only Rom I know of that can change the long press of the home button is CM7.
I'm considering removing the camera app and sticking with Camera360 as my ONLY camera app, would this be a good idea. I'm assuming the latter has the originals feature set and much much more so I'm not losing anything at all. Given I've updated the firmware the quality should improve regardless of which app I use right?
-The camera app is safe to remove. I would try Titanium and freeze it first if you're worried.
Can someone please explain to me why there are 4 voice apps?
-You might want to detail these better.
On my Desire I remember I could tell the phone NOT to sleep if it were charging, but I can't seem to find this option anywhere, does anyone know the exact location or is there an alternative app?
-I do this through tasker.
Is it just me, or does the normal OTA software update option not work? I tried it several times yesterday and I either got a failed connection or it just hung and did nothing ...
-Dont know
On my Desire I had a custom ROM and when I pressed the off button I got an option to reboot, any idea where I can get that option back?
-I dont think this comes in the stock rom. I'm on Cognition which has it.
I know since 2.2 they removed the vib->silent->normal settings when changing volume but I really need to use silent sometimes anyone know a way round this?

This is interesting because I am very interested in most of these questions as well. Here is my opinions on each.
As much as I enjoy seeing a green battery icon ... it isn't of much use without a value. What's the best way to change this icon BUT without flashing a custom ROM, I like my ROM the way it is.
-There is battery icon mods, search for it in the Theme section

I actually just found this one for KF3 so I'm going to test it in a moment

As per the camera, backups aren't my concern more of getting the best quality and featureset.
I will look into tasker, though I was looking for something very light as I only need this one feature.
Rather stick with stock ROM for now, at least until I get a JIG
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Sorry about that thanks.
Just as a quick update, reinstalled the Task manager app and placed the apk back in the system/app folder and it seems to work. Also the battery icon has been updated and looked great :-D.
[*]As per the camera, backups aren't my concern more of getting the best quality and featureset.
I think you underestimate Titanium, it does more than backups.
Oh I don't use Titanium for my backups, I like always starting from fresh, so my contacts, etc are backedup but apps and settings I always prefer doing from scratch.
I tried Camera 360 and unless I'm mistaken the quality seemed LESS than the default app, which was a let down. Maybe I will try again.

Hey guys just got a few quick questions, I know there is a likelihood this has been discussed elsewhere but I've not found the resources.

I like CM7 battery indicator reads a clear number .

karan999's KF3 stock ROM with CF-Rooted KF3 kernel works perfectly, only concern is I feel like when I'm using the browser that the % drops like a rock in contrast to when I'm just doing normal activities like calls and text. In fact I can speak for quite some time and there's hardly a % change.

When you are browsing with WiFi in Stock browser then battery drains at a rate of 1% per 3/4 minutes. Try Opera, it's a little bit of less hogger
Regards.
I've been using 3G/HSDPA, no WiFi access here. I think on data it is about that about of % decrease for me. I can survive with it as I don't browse on the go much but at home it feels like a disappointment.
Anyone figured out how to replace the task manager for long press home button?

[Q] List of problems in Galaxy S3 I9300, international version

I purchased my SGS3 about 4 months ago from the middle-east.
I have a series of problems (possibly problems cause I am new to Android phones). I am listing them down here in hope that someone will tell me how to solve them.
The flash of blue
This happened once or twice about a month ago. Whenever I pressed the power button to unlock the phone, the complete screen went solid blue for a flash of a second and then I saw the flower on the home screen.
Is this a hardware issue ? Signs of failing hardware ?
The home screen redraw / lag issue
When I press the home button to exit an app, say Chrome, the screen re-draws itself. The icons take some time to show up back on the screen.
Initially I thought it was related to cache being full. However, cleaning it using ES Task Manager was of no help. The re-drawing continues.
I also disabled the SVoice on double-click home button. No
I saw a YouTube video which says that there is a bug fix but it is available only for UK phones.
Here is the video: /watch?v=5uYw3mVhiuY
Again, is it a failing GPU ?
The grainy screen
Title says it all. The screen seems to be grainy. The grains seems to be more visible under low brightness and on grayish backgrounds. I tested the screen using the screen tester that comes with ES Task Manager. When the color goes to whitish-gray, I can see the grains. They are in bands - horizontal and vertical.
Low quality display
This is not related to grainy screen. This is related to the pulling down of notification menu.
I happened to pull it down slowly while goofing around.
I noticed that the quality of the display gradually reduces as I pull it down. When my finger is near the last one-third of the screen, I see that blue color gets split into bands. A little further down, it looks like the background is some very low quality image.
The bit depth seems to be reducing, if that is a proper term.
Low RAM even on idle
Even when I use ES Task Manager to kill the apps, all I usually have remaining is 323 MB of the 800 MB of RAM that is there in the phone.
Why ?
Lag when opening settings
There is also a lag when I open different settings from settings menu.
If I click on the battery settings, there is a visible lag before the actual battery information pop up.
I know that was a lot of rant but being a beginner, I have no clue how to go about solving any of these.
Thanks for reading.
I hope you can help me solve most of these. If not, please let me know if I should return the phone to Samsung.
As for usage, very light use for casual gaming, web browsing, YouTube videos, reading books.
I haven't dropped the phone at all nor have I modded it in any way.
I have tested it using AnTuTu and it gives my phone 16000+ points. Does that indicate phone is fine ?

No i am saying read and understand the basics first .as you dont have a clue
Then search for your problems .
Or take the phone to s service centre and let them see multiple problems .
Though your warranty is initially with the seller Samsung warranty is an extra limited warranty .

this happens for everyone no matter what! this just appears randomly and this isn't any problem so far!

it depends mostly on the background processes! the less they are, the less the lag will be.
I saw a YouTube video which says that there is a bug fix but it is available only for UK phones.

this firmware is way too old buddy! it's 4.0.4! we are already nearer to 4.3! the XXEMG4 and the later firmwares are the latest and there is much less lag when you press the home button like redrawing of apps.
Again, is it a failing GPU ?

can't answer this! i have no such problems.

this never happened to me and never been reported so far.

more free ram? try rooting and use greenify
