Solution: PEAP authentication without server certificate validation! - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

I struggled for several days to get my 8525 (Cingular 1.34) to authenticate either PEAP or LEAP against my work network. I never did figure out how to get LEAP to work, but I did get PEAP going. I've added a new section to the wiki http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Registry covering how to disable checking of the authentication server's certificate.
We didn't pay the $$$$ for a commercial certificate, so on all our XP clients we uncheck the "Validate server certificate" option....no such beastie on Cingular 1.34 at least. Turns out there's a reg key one can add to disable the validation:
Code:
\HKLM\Comm\EAP\Extension\25\ValidateServerCert=dword:00000000
does the trick.
Hope this helps someone else trying to get PEAP to work with their WiFi!
Note also that connectivity to our Cisco APs seem to work MUCH better when I slide the WiFi PowerManagement slider over to performance. My cheapo D-Link router works fine at any setting, but the Ciscos seem to drop packets right and left with power management happening.

Humm sounds interesting, but I am not sure that I understood everything.
First, are you sure that you are talking about PEAP auth with certs and not just EAP-TLS? The registry path refers to ...\EAP\...
Secondly, why not just add your CA as trusted CA on your PPC? It seems to be the way to go in your case.

I'm sure only in that my IT guy swears we only support PEAP and he could see my authentication failing until I added the switch and now he sees me authenticating PEAP successfully.

I agreed, but I think IT wants to leave their options open for future certificates open. If I hadn't been successful with this, that was going to be my next try.

Glad to be of assistance! FWIW, this also works with the 2.15 Cingular ROM.

Create the same registry key- it wasn't there in WM5 either. I can confirm that this works on my Tilt/Kaiser running WM6.

I guess I missed the "add" part. Anyways, it connects but is VERY unreliable. Whenever I turn on the device it makes me type in my password even though it is stored or just doesnt work. If it doesn't work I go into the settings and a lot of times the "Use IEEE 802.1x" is unchecked or the EAP type is changed to smart card. Sometimes even still it doesn't work until I reboot or disable and reenable wifi. Even then it doesn't always work. Anyone else having similiar problems?

Not sure you're really fighting the PEAP certificate problem then. Note also that our Cisco APs don't like the power management setting on anything other than high performance.

Thanks for the reply! So under WLAN - Power Mode - Best Performance? That is what I have it on. Pretty weird... I am using it right next to my laptop which has an "excellent" connection. My Hermes shows 2-3 bars. Any other ideas?

Hi
I ve bought a HTC Tornado(TMobile SDA-unlocked)with Windows Mobile 5 smartphone to take advantage of our WiFi network. I am having problems setting up my WiFi connection and i cant find a solution..please help me...
When using my laptop wifi connect I set up the following
My network name (SSIDD) - Utech-Students
Network Authentication OPEN
Data Encryption WEP
key is automatically provided (i tick this option)
Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network
EAP Type as PEAP.
Then under configuration of PEAP I uncheck Validate Server
Certificate and authentication method selected as "Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) and "enable fast reconnect" is also ticked.
With these settings it works perfectly well in laptop.
But with these settings made in the SDA phone it gives the following error msgs ;
"The server certificate is issued by an unknown authority" and
"Cannot log on to the wireless network. This network requires a personal certificate to positively identify you."
I NEED HELP DESPERATELY ...
Please note that i am not a computer savy...so please help me to
understand the things what i am supposed to do.
Awaiting to hear from you ...thanking you in advance

I am. I added the key on both a Dash running stock WM5 and an 8525 running Schap's 4.31 ROM and it only works on the Dash - same wifi config on both connecting to the same network.

Now after days of reading i found a solution for all the devices that couldnt connect with the modified reg-key(HKLM/COMM/EAP/EXT....ValidateServerCert) to a wpa and eap-mschap secured wlan.
To enable the eap-options you have to install the securew2 client. Once you had installed you can choose for authentication method one of the securew2 has provided(this is where you see PEAP and 802.1X) in the WLAN Connections. Just select the TTLS method and disable the outer authentication and the certificate validation in the options. Now you can select EAP and MS-chapv2 in the authentication tab of the securew2 client. and at least you can sign in here your name, password and domain. You can also set an Profile with your settings in the Securew2 client.
This Solution has worked for me on a HTC Touch Cruise(XDA-Orbit-2).

Hello,
I have the problem of logging in a secured network, and I found the solution
here of adding the registry value. I am working with WM 6.1.
Maybe my question is a stupid, but I don't understand what exactly I have
to add - A key named "ValidateServerCert", and to set it's default value to 0,
or to create a Value named "ValidateServerCert" onder the key "25", make it
DWORD type, and give it the value of 0...
What should I add?
Thanks!

Hello this is a sirious problem I think,
I wasnt able to get this going...
I tried the reg key method (but I am not sure if I did this correct)
and I installed the w2secure client (didnt work either)
so further explanation is required(PLEASE)
sorry if this post doesnt sound very polite but I did my best ^^
btw. I dont own a Hermes but a Touch Diamond with WinMo 6.1

Richard,
Great call. Spent a couple of hours trying to configure my touch pro to stop asking for a personal certificate with no joy. Upping power save mode to 'best performance' allowed it to authenticate straight away. Once this was done, dropped it to best battery and everything seems to work fine (famous last words of course).

Hello all. I have a cingular 8125 and found the same problem with the wifi access. I am new to total commander and I understand the process, however I do not know how to create the registry listed above to correct the problem. Any help with the program would be great, thanks.

share 3G via WiFi?

I thought I saw a .cab file here somewhere that would allow you to bridge the 3G/EDGE connection to the WiFi connection so I can share my 3G over WiFi to laptop or whatever.
Anyone seen this? I cant remember the name, thought it was something like WMBridge or something.

internet connection sharing will allow you to share your 3G over bluetooth or USB to your laptop !!
and now that I think about it you can almost certainly go through the arduous and difficult task of getting activesync to connect over an adhoc wifi connection, once that is done you will be able to use the phone as a 3G modem for your laptop.

u can do it tht way but its hard, and requires a registry hack, which to be fair doesnt work all that well, disconns after a couple of mins at best, bluetooth is the way to go if u want wireless connecton, although i use the lead for security, u can use the 3g conn as a modem, but then if u like us use tmob wb and walk then u cnt use ur data package.
hope this helps

The app is called wmWifiRouter. Looks like they just came out with a new version the 10th. Forget bluetooth, its not secured at all, and only lets you share with one device. With wmwifirouter you can share with many. See the link below.

excellent that is exactly what I was looking for, I will play with it today and see if I can get it to work.
Thanks

Should be a simple matter of copying the exe to your device and running it. It takes care of all the registry settings, starting up Internet Sharing, keeping the connection alive, and with the latest version you can even put the unit to sleep and your connection will stay alive. About the only thing it doesn't do is set up a peer-to-peer profile with a fixed IP address, but the thread above walks you through that. Make sure you set the profile to use WPA encryption (NOT WEP or 'open') and set a password.

The directions are confusing because the newer method was grafted onto the same thread as the older method. So it's hard to tell what's what. I put about an hour into this but made no progress. The exe file doesn't appear to do anything on the Athena...

Sorry, just saw your response as I wrote mine. Here is what I did:
1. set up an ad hoc network on my Athena. IP address 192.168.0.1 (another place saide 192.168.0.7--tried both)
2. Set up on my client (MacBook Pro). A connection was established.
3. Ran the exe file -- nothing happened. One comment said to deactivate the network before running. I did this in various degrees with no success.
4. Also opened up the Internet Sharing applet and tried to connect manually -- "USB cable is not connected."
Clearly I'm missing something here. It would be very handy to have this capability. Can you clarify??
Not sure why you are having a problem - I unzipped the zip, transfered the exe to the athena and it ran on the first try after first setting up the ad-hoc wifi connection (settings, connections, wi-fi, network adapters tab, IEEE..., use specific IP address in the 192.168.x.x range; then go to the other tab and set up an ad-hoc connection).
I had an even worse experience. Everytime I ran the exe, my Athena locked up, needing a complete reset each time.
I gave up in the end .
I have got other methods to work using Mortscipts, but it does seem like something that would be well worth someones time sorting out for the good of us all.
Have you tried the latest version of wmWifiRouter? The developer released a new version of it earlier this month. Its on version 0.8 now.

Wireless Help and AP4

Hey
I have an Ameo; running AP4 and radio version 1.50
I can turn on wireless and it says wireless is available however thats it, i cant connect to anything nor use MSN or anything like that.
So i played around with it. I seen within some setting (network cards i think) that i had 2 wireless showing saying 'available' so i clicked connect and it said 'connecting' and then goes back to avilable and after a few attempts, unavilable.
My wifi is not secured, anyone can connect. Any help appreciated
Now as for the AP4 question when i turn my ameo around, the screen layout switches how can i turn the automated switch off ?

Hi Baby1111,
This ist not the solution for most of the Wifi-Problems i think. In my case the Symbol wich looks like WIFI ist named "Network Card". If I change to Internet instead of work nothing changes. WIFI does not turn on.
I saw the name of device in Bootloader ist ATHE400
Here my bootloader Information in the red bar:
ATHE400
IPL-v1.00
ATHE400 MFG
SPL-v3.50.OliNex
maybe this can be a problem, before i think ist was ATHE100. Also the TOMTOM 6 requests a new activation so somthing seems to be changed with the IMEI or so.
by reading the forum there if found 3 Cases for solution:
1. this one Change from Work to Internet ->> No scuccess in my situation
2. disable the automatic screen orientation ->> no complete Instruction how to do this or i can not understand it.
3. Sent the MAC-Adress of the device to Senior users like OLIPRO and get a file to change. ->> I dont know if they are glad to get much support requests.
I hope there will be a fix wich i can do by myself without disturbing the gurus at there great work.
Thomas

@ Bit117 and Baby111
I can assist you if your WiFi did not properly configure during the flashing of AP4 instead of Olipro and cmonex (Olinex) who we'd like to have working on higher issues.
Send me a PM with your original MAC address and an e-mail address where I can send you a custom file configured to your device. I will also send detailed step-by-step instructions to fix your device. You will need to use MTTY so if you don't have that, find it in the wiki.
Regards,
Raskell
p.s. - If you do not know your original MAC address, check inside your battery door. On some models it is listed there (not the same as IMEI). Others have reported that flashing back to the modified AP3 gives a working Wifi. If this is so for you, get your MAC address from there and reflash to AP4, sending me the MAC info and we'll get you working!

Yes, this is obviously not a fix for those whose wifi will not turn on.
But I've come across a few people who think their wifi is not working because this setting is wrong, and when I installed AP4 it set it to 'Work' by default.

Any get VPN working with DCD 3.2.5?

Has anyone got VPN connectivity working with DCD 3.2.5? I have been trying for hours with no luck. Every time I try to connect I just get the generic unable to connect message (VPN Server problems. I can however use the phone with Internet Sharing and connect to the same VPN end point with my laptop. I know the VPN is working.

Telus ROM can authenticate just fine. Hmmmm. DCD Any thoughts?
PPTP VPN works
Here is what I did:
Configured the VPN connection.
Create a nework exception for a valid DNS name or use wildcards:
*.myvpnconnection.com
Anything you go to in that domain will use the VPN. IE seems to be the only thing that will initiate the connection.
It sounds like you might have something wrong on the server side.
MM
I just setup mine to use the vpn into my office and it worked slick as "stuff"... but we use a MS VPN server with AD...
I'm able to use VPN on 3.2.5 (stock, not cooked in kitchen) It works, but often time I have to soft reset before it will let me connect. Windows even suggests it... I haven't figured out a way around this when it happens, other then to soft reset.
Also I'm having a problem where VPN locks up the phone if I leave it connected, and the phone goes into lower power mode. It won't wake up with power. I have to soft reset.
Lastly, I'm trying to figure out the fastest way to actually launch the connection. It seems horribly buried / inefficent, the way I'm doing it:
I'm going to Start -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections Icon -> Under the VPN Connection hitting "Manage Existing Connections -> VPN Tab -> Selecting the VPN Connection and "right clicking (hold until context menu pops up) and hitting "Connect".
Anyone know of a faster way?
Thanks in advance!!
PPTP and L2TP work fine here. I do have an issue where if I leave the connection live and the device goes to sleep it doesn't wake up and requires a soft reset. It's been like that for a number of revisions. Other than that it works fine.

Hmm are you typing with auto-correction on?
If you mean WPA2-PSK (WPA2 with password), then I can confirm that this works.
I have a similar issue with my 'O2' router (rebranded Thompson 585 V7) and have WPA+WPA2 (WPA-PSK Encryption) setup.
All devices in my home (laptops & Ipod Touch's) have no problems, but my new Hero continually fails to get an IP address. Seems to connect OK but then continualy cycles therough 'Obtaining address'... 'failed'.... 'Obtaining address'!
It did successfully connect once for about 20 mins, but after a phone off/on, has gone back to failing.
I'll experiment further, but may have to return the device

Glenn

I'm still waiting for my hero, so I might be wrong. But according to the manual, the hero can only handle WEP encryption on WiFi. WPA/WPA2 are not supported. I think, for the hero to work on WiFi, you must change the encryption on your router either to WEP or to unsecure.

I have seven other devices that have no problems at all (I configured them all), so I'm assuming it's an issue with the Hero. Therefore, it's going back to it's supplier.

Glenn

Yep it may well be a faulty one if its from a store try get them to test it if they can if not the get the new one home and try again you might also wont to try it on someone else wifi see if it works on theres. Also it might be that the amount of device conected to it may be causing a problem on first time setup, you could try it on its own then let other device connect to route worth a try
You should bear in mind that sometimes certain devices just don't get on. Someone posted here earlier with a similar issue, and they found changing their router from the Orange supplied box to another one "fixed" their issue.

Dave
I found problems connecting my Hero to our Belkin N1 Vision ADSL Modem/Router using WPA2-Personal.
In the end it turned out that re-enabling the option to broadcast the SSID solved the problem. For some reason creating a connection manually to a network which does not brodcast caused the issue for me.

Ian

So there is a generic advice, run your wifi in a standard-compliant mode. Broadcast SSID and turn off all the vendor-specific "turbo mode" and "extra-long/short" packets crap.
Problem with wpa2 enterprise
I am not able to connect to wifi at work.
We use wpa2-enterprise with PEAPv0/EAP-MSCHAPv2 and broadcast SSID.
Hero detects wifi network with incorrect security. It displays: "(network SSID) secured with WEP". When I tap on it it asks for WEP hex key...
I tried to add wpa2-enterprise network manually. It says "not in the range" and keeps offering me the above one with wrong security...
any ideas?
wifi works fine on other phones

wifi not connecting on tmous hd2 when using wpa

hi!
its a problem that suddenly developed. my wifi router (dlink dsl-g604t) is running in 802.11b/g mode and has wpa-tkip for security. i use 3 other laptops, a nokia e65 and my hd2 and i have assigned static IPs to all. i have no sort of filtering enabled. my dhcp pool is limited only to these 5 devices+my router itself (10.1.1.1-10.1.1.6).
my hd2 has always connected fine to my wifi on wpa. since recently, it simply doesnt connect anymore at all when using wpa. i just see the rotating circle next to my network name in the available networks list. in advanced settings i see "associated to network" as the status but it never gets an ip at all. router doesnt list hd2 as a connected dhcp client (and thats correct because i dont see an ip on my phone either). not to mention all other devices are connecting fine.
i have looked around the web and xda and i have tried the following:
what has worked for my h2:
1) open wifi
2) wep on an 'open' key
what has not worked for my hd2:
1) wpa-tkip
open/wep/wpa are the only options i have. no wpa2. my router is old. last firmware release was in 2007 and i dont expect anymore to come.
what i have tried to make wpa work (without any success):
1) changing my psk several times. my laptop connects when i change my psk but phone doesnt. i even changed keyboards on my hd2 to make sure i was typing what i was seeing
2) assigning the same static ip (as set in the router) to my broadcom wifi card and the ne2000 ethernet card on the hd2
3) the reg dword and static ip setting as suggested here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627654
4) removing static ip setting for my hd2 MAC and opening up some space in the dhcp pool on the router.
if i misconfigure the security settings on my phone in any way (set to wpa-aes/wep instead of wpa tkip), the phone tries to connect and then stops. then the wifi network is simply listed as available. again this is normal behaviour and confirms that the phone understands the security setup. but when i set it right again (wpa-tkip), it just keeps connecting forever...
(i always soft reset when i make any changes.)
it doesnt seem to me to be a dlink router issue, considering other devices connect fine. also i havent changed any settings on the router in months (until my troubleshooting efforts and now i am back to the same settings).
i am pretty sure something's messed up on the phone, specifically relating to wpa security. thats because i can communicate with my router (i get "associated to network"/rotating circle as status) but i cant get an ip. what separates the two things is successful authentication.
it cant be a radio issue unless radios start malfunctioning randomly... as for what i have changed on my phone - i have installed sktools. the reason i mention sktools is because i found an entry reading "802.11g support" under "tune up->network" and it was DISABLED. so i simply enabled it. i have tried disabling and enabling again but that doesnt help. i also ran the registry cleanup if that makes any difference.
anyone else had this problem? or anyone who can suggest what i should try? please dont tell me to downgrade to wep/open.
many thanks!
phone details:

I have no suggestions , other than to tell you I use my phone with WPA daily on a Linksys 610n, works well ...
I wish I had more input for you ...
well im definitely sure that my dlink/hd2/wpa combo works too... it just doesnt work now... i have changed many roms and many radios. phone always connected...
if there is no decent way of going about this then what manhandling might work? reflash? hard reset? i really dont want to do those things because i am into heavy modding and equally bad at backing up... eg) several registry hacks will all go poof...

Just remembered the time I did have trouble getting it to connect, it was after I had enabled the "N" hack with BSB Tweak, could not get it to connect, again .. (this was not with the linksys, but with my older netgear on the other side of my network)
After a Hard Reset it did connect, but , not sure the "N" is worth the trouble ....

i disabled the N hack by changing the registry key directly... soft reset and still nothing... so i put it back on... forgot to mention that in my original post...
edit:
reflashed radio... still no luck.

K .. and I was not clearer in my post, .... Once I had enabled it, disabling it did not seem to make a difference, I could not connect to that older AP, until I hard reset/re-flashed ... it happened twice, so I have just quit using the "N" hack altogether ...

did you start having the problems right after setting the n hack? because i have had my n hack on since a long time and it worked fine all this while...

I would not say right after, but fairly soon, was I think the next day I noticed, it , we are probably barking up the wrong tree, but It's all I got ....
solved!
woohoo! i fixed my problem.
it turns out that i was suffering from over-modding my phone i must thank this post#8 in the htc wizard subforum for reminding me that i did the same thing before my wpa problem started! thanks ristiisa for updating a 2 year old thread (in 2009)! so i went back to advanced config and under network -> i DISABLED wpa authentication (earlier i had set it to ENABLED)... and pronto, my weather tab has finally updated
imagine finding a solution in the htc wizard thread of all places... i am not sure what exactly i did wrong when i enabled wpa authentication though... but now its fixed! and all because i soooooooooo badly didnt want to do a hard reset/reflash
i thought i should come back here and post the solution for others... during my several days of solution hunting i also found out that googling for "hd2 wpa issue" or something similar brings my own thread as the top result
lesson for all those folk who curse their devices when they break down... maybe it is YOUR fault after all
SOLVED!

yep just like the doctor says ..."If it hurts when you do something, don't do that thing!!"
EDIT:
Glad that fixed it for you ....
But just for reference WPA does work, just not for everyone it seems ....
