BN Book Directory, Calibre, Cut&Paste, Library Covers

I use Calibre to send over books/magazines to Main Memory, and I noticed today that it is sending it to my user allowed 1gb portion. I thought until now that Calibre was just that awesome, and was sending onto the BN partition. But it is in fact sending to /media/My Files/Books (and /mnt/media/My Files/Books).
I have ES File Explorer and root, and also can get into /system if needed due to a mount /sys app. I want to be able to Cut / Paste the files from my Calibre directory (directories...).
What I'm wondering is 2 things.
First... Do I cut from /mnt/media, or just /media? What's the difference between the two?
Second... where do I put these files in order for them to be on the BN partition of 12gb, and have access to them from the library app?
/media/B&N Downloads/Books
/mnt/media/B&N Downloads/Books
/data/books
/data/media/B&N Downloads/Books
I THINK that /data/media/B&N Downloads is the directory I'm looking for, I just wanted to be sure and maybe help someone else out w/ the question/answer here...
I've tried figuring this out as well. I tried moving ebooks to the actual directory where NookBooks download to (data/media/B&N Dowloads/Books), and they aren't detected.
The only directory I've tried that works is under system/media/books. Unfortunately, there is only 600MB available here.
I moved a folder into /system/media/books and after stopping and restarting the Library app, the books within the folder did show up in the Library.
However after long-pressing the book, i noted Delete was not an option from the library.
Not a huge deal... if i want to delete them I can simply mount /system as rw, open ES File Explorer, and delete them.
Can anyone confirm that the /system/ location is actually on the B&N 12gb partition?
edit: this doesn't really resolve my secondary objective, of getting Magazines to show up in the Magazine tab of the Library (there is no /system/media/magazines!)
Do you get issues with the cover picture showing on the nook? I use Calibre to put in the cover pic and metadata before I manually transfer them over (thanks for the tip that Calibre could actually do it for me!) but what really pisses me off about the nook is that it is totally random in terms of covers showing up. I cant suss it out? Ive tried different sizes, resolutions etc and still its hit and miss as to what shows and what doesnt. I would just like to know what conditions make a cover show up and what doesnt? Sorry, I know this isn't an answer to your questions but just thought i'd ask =)
As far as epub books... if the cover doesn't show up after you transfer it, in calibre, convert the book from epub to epub. I think theres something wrong in the initial tag file, like 'Cover' instead of 'cover'. You could try to fix the file (.mpf i think) manually, but I've had no trouble so far converting epub to epub, which does fix the issue.
As for magazines in .pdf format... the nook will not show covers for .pdfs, not sue why, and if i try to convert it to epub the resulting file is only 2 pages long.
So... my reccomendation there is to name all your magazines w/ an author of like Magazine, or manually copy the .pdfs into the Magazines folder at like mnt/media/magazines or somethin. It shows up in the MyNook drive when you connect it. At that point... at least all your coverless files are in one row on the nook...
(I sort by author, and show just book covers. I name all my epub series w/ 'Series Name VII: Book Name', that way the series displays in order.)
Hope this helps.
Oh... one last thing... a lot of my books... the cover is just a little too large for the area on my nooks bookshelf, which ends up cutting off the bottom 10% or so of the cover, until i click on the book. Then as it's opening, it shows me the full cover. If anyone has any fixes for that, fill me in!
AugustusBot is correct regarding epub files. Nook is very specific how the cover image is name and meta-tag. It must be "cover.jpg" or "cover.jpeg". Any other file name used by some publishers or epub authors simply won't work. I think Calibre simply renames the files and updates meta-tag. I fixed my epub files using Sigil.
Thanks for the help guys! After I add the covers and metadata, I then save the file - which Calibre processes by saving the folder by author then title and the book with the cover and the book itself. But I am assuming that converting it from epub to epub is not the same as I have been doing, which is just saving it. I'll definitely give it a shot. I didn't realise everything had to be so case specific etc. I just presumed that once Calibre saved it - it formatted the cover and labelled it in the proper way since the name from the original source file of the covers are always random and varied.
It sucks that pdfs don't have the cover shown. I kinda like pdfs to remain in that format but why B&N cannot put the cover to display is beyond me. They cant even use a small font to get the entire file name to show on the cover which is how I label my pdfs.
My second gripe is that the way the books are displayed on the home screen - there is no real alignment because they dont make the thumbnails the same size so some book covers are wider than others etc. I hate seeing some books a pixel or two higher or to the left/right compared to others.
I thought the Color gave the B&N devs time to practice their skills so that the Tablet would be better but to me it seems there is still work to be done.
I had tried using Sigil last week to fix an epub book but found it complicated to use. I'm sure i was just not doing it right even though for editing epubs it seems to be the best there is.
Glad to be of help.
As for your 'home screen' problems... I don't use the BN launcher, i use Go Launcher EX. One of the 4 quick buttons at the bottom of the launcher, I've replaced w/ the Library app... and that app gives you numerous options for how to display your books.
I have seen one small problem there, as I mentioned above, where my book covers are a little ... off... imagine a picture frame of 8x10, and you fit an 8.5x11 page into it, you lose a bit of the edges. This occurs for probably... 1/3 of my books displayed in the Library. Not sure why. When i click on that book, as it opens it shows me the full cover.
I'd love a fix for that and a method of displaying PDF covers.
So i've discovered something about the cover distortion.
I had a cover (Book1) that looked good, and its dimensions were 329x500.
I had another cover (Book2) that distorted, and its dimensions were 283x500.
I manually resized the image for Book2 on my computer to be 329x500. When I reloaded that book onto my Nook and killed/reopened Library, the cover displayed correctly.
What's going on is that Library displays in a certain Width x Height. If an image is below that Width, it scales it up to that width, but maintains the aspect ratio of the image. This causes the Height of the image to be larger than the Height that Library displays, and therefore the bottom portion gets cut off.
I would love for someone with a book purchased from BN store to either A. find the cover jpg on their nook and tell me the dimensions, or B. load that book into Calibre and tell me the dimensions.

Snote questions.

hi all,
I have not posted much to xda, but read a lot here. I have a note 10.1 2014. I use it every day and am still getting use to it.
I have some Snote review/questions.
One of the things that I have been waiting for as far as tablets and what they can do, has always been, can I write on it? the note is a big leap forward and the 2014 version IMO another leap. the high res screen just gives you better sharpness to what you are writing/drawing. that being said. there are some things I have having trouble with.
I have the 16GB version. I have few apps installed. I like snote for taking notes in class and for work. I do cad work with several cad tools, Autocad, Adobe illistrator, Adobe Indesign, Mentor Graphics Pads 9.5, just to name a few. I have lots of notes and schetching going on. I also have classes I still take and use the snote for takeing notes in class. so here are some of the things I like. (just so the post is not all about whining about what I dont like)
I like that snote has so many brushes, and graphics, and graphs. I like that I can use back grounds.. tho i only used lined paper or graph paper as a background. I like that I can export to pdf or jpeg with ease.. lost of stuff to like.
the bad is..and this is where I need help if you have any suggestions.
I cant save the native snote files to my sd-card. this is a big deal in that, I use the tablet for work, class and play. by the time android and the pre installed apps are done taking up space from my 16GB. and with the all the notes and schetching going on, I am already at 50%. I have moved all the apps (or what portion of the apps) that I can to the sd card, but snote does not appear to have an option to save to sd. this seems like a such a silly thing to overlook? or maybe im missing something? I have tried just moving old notes out to the sd card for stroage however, snote does not like that and all the notes I moved in the native format I lost. and I mean they just vanished..
the other issue I have is that when I use a background like the graph paper, when I export to PDF and print, the margin is about an inch on either side of the PDF. in other words the area I have to write on, is not 8 1/2 by 11. are there other backgrounds that actually represent a full sheet of paper?
I have tried papyrus, which is the closest thing I can find to snote as far as note taking. the sheets are a full 8 1/2 by 11. however there are not many options like snote has, adding graphs and graphics or clipart is not as easy. also it does not appear that the native file format can be saved to the sd card.
any and all advice is helpful. also if there are any tutorials? I have not found much or many "experts" with snote. there are a few videos on youtube but most are about the last gen tablet and the snote app is quite a bit different on the 2014 version. but if you know any website or user groups that focus on the snote app please point me in the right direction..
thanks for your help in advance

I have been using snote for a while and to help with the first question. You can go to your sdcard (this is the label for the internal storage) and copy your whole snote folder to your extsdcard. Now this isnt ideal, but i believe snote only looks for that specific folder in sdcard only, you can import snote (snb file or whatever it is...i forget) files when you want to edit them and then copy them back into the folder on your extsdcard when done.
Pdf thing ill look into. I know on my note ii on a previous rom that had an older version of snote this was not a problem.
Update: since i flashed some roms this morning i barely started up snote again. I selected landscape blank template and imported a pdf. I doubt the initial choice of landscape while in landscape mode matters since the template adjusts when i rotate to portrait. In both landscape and portrait both pdfs i tried had no margins.
Note: in the pic i zoomed out to illustrate what i mean by no margins. You could zoom in so the pdf is exactly screen width
thanks for the reply
the margin im talking about is not inporting a pdf, drawing some stuff and then exporting it. my problem has to do with taking some notes (just plain note taking, not importing anything for a markup) then exporting to pdf. this seems to add margins to the exported pdf. I had not thought of this till now.. it could also be the printer driver that is adding margins. I will need to do some printing when I get home.
thanks for the reply tho.

haha oops i misread then. I will see if it happens for me too.

After playing around with the select tool it seems the largest properties a page can have are 21cm width (compare to 21.59 cm ~ 8.5 in) and 33.04 cm in height (compared to 27.94cm~ 11in) so even though height should be ok when exporting as pdf the width will always have white gaps due to the standard pdf size it outputs to. Curious though as i had gaps equidistant all around.

[Help] Acer Iconia B1-A71 Bigger Application Memory

Hello,
I am working on an Acer Iconia B1-A71 at the moment.
I managed to unlock the BootLoader, thanks to @FireDiamond ) & I also managed to root it, thanks to @entonjackson ).:highfive:
Now I'ld like to increase the memory dedicated to applications.
I know that I'm able to swap internal & external storage, but what I'm willing to do is increase what in the settings is called "applications memory".
Talking with a friend we thought that repartitioning internal & application memory, & then swapping modified internal with external memory, would grant lots of application memory & lots of internal memory.
Is this possible ? what should I use or do to achieve this ??
Thanks to all the comunity!!!
P.S.: More specifically:
App 1GB, Int 5GB, Ext 30GB =Partition=> App 5GB, Int 1GB, Ext 30GB =Swap=> App 5GB, Int 30GB, Ext 1GB.
My useless opinion:
So, what will you do with that increased memory? I thought only about games with large cache like Dead Trigger (about 0.7 Gb) or apps that require a heavy amount of memory like cSploit+MetaSploit Framework+Ruby (about 3 Gb).
Did you know we need another resources to get apps working, like RAM and CPU? That's why I bolded RAM - we need to increase it first!
I did a little research earlier:
(tablet status) — (free RAM in standby mode, total is 480 Mb)
1. Full stock RV04RC04 — ~90 Mb
2. Stock, DVM heap 30 Mb, Smart Launcher v2 — 130 Mb
3. Same as 2, but with removed bloatware and stock launcher — 150 Mb.
Now let's check minimal and optimal requirements for some apps:
Minecraft PE — 64/128 Mb (passes)
NfS: MW — 100/250 Mb (passes on minimal graphics)
GTA: SA — 300/1024 Mb (passes veeery laggy on minimal graphics then crashes)
DJ Studio 5 — 500/1024 Mb (btw it passes, so strange!)
Firefox (even Beta) — ?/? (crashes on second opened tab)
Also, when playing some heavy games you can see that ugly LOW MEMORY sign in edge of screen.
What we need to make:
1. Custom kernel with another compression and enabled 2nd CPU kernel (it's disabled forever with stock one).
2. ROM with a high RAM economy, so we can use free RAM in heavy apps.
Unfortunately, I don't think we are able to do it, because there are no many developers who ready to work with Iconias; anyway we have devs, but in the most cases we can't co-work because of "language barrier". I know some guys from 4PDA, they can look on the B1-A71 if I ask them, but we need more than only 2 russian devs to make all that stuff...
Now about your problem with memory swapping
Use google: android create vold fstab
@FireDiamond
I know that RAM is needed & I noticed it had quite a low amount.
The owner ( a friend of mine ) wants to have a bit more app memory because by installing the few apps she uses, it fills up pretty fast.
She uses it to read some pdf, browsing & play low level games as Fruit Ninja or any Saga game.
I'm searching now on the keywords, thanks for them.
Probably it would be enough to set 3GB for App & 3GB for Int storage, though if possible, it could be more usefull if I also did the memory swap, in which case the "Ext" storage ( = Int memory left out of App storage ) would be useless since there would be an "Int" 30GB.
That is why I thought of giving everything to App memory.
EDIT: I searched a bit about thevold.fstab & I recognized that it is usefull for swapping, which I will do following an other topic. What about resizing interanl memory partitions ? Does anyone know what I could use ?

Create a shortcut FILE that is stored somewhere OTHER THAN the homescreen..

Hello all, I have received a TON of false positives in my search for whether this is even possible.
In windows, a shortcut to a file or folder can be stored in any folder.
So far in Android, a shortcut can only be placed on the home screen, and AFAIK does not have a corresponding file that can be found in the root browser.
I am trying to trick Handshaker into giving me access to my EXTERNAL SD, and the only way I can think of is to create a shortcut somewhere on the internal SD that zips on over to the card where all my media (100Gb+) is stored.
I'm on a OPX, so internal storage BARELY COVERS apps. No switcheroo action is reasonably doable.
As an aside, is this whole Mac incompatibility thing a vestigial grudge? It must take a lot of effort to KEEP usb from working as it should. Are there other apps besides the "works when it feels like it" Android File Transfer or "installs weird **** on your phone" HandShaker that allow you to move around YOUR OWN FILES without using the cloud? The amount of web silence and lack of development is stunning to me. Maybe I need to refine my search terms?? Unlikely. I've tried many tens of iterations.
The search for answers here results in a mountain of false-positives as well.
Thanks for taking the time to at least read this.
Cheers.

Subfolders possible in DCIM-Folder?

Hello Community!
As everybody might know, the stock camera app saves taken pictures in the DCIM folder (phone memory or sd card - depending on the settings).
Unfortunately, photo files are becoming more and more in this folder, as Android does not create subfolders for every 100 photos or so.
I remember that nokia phones (with symbian) did create subfolders after 100 photos. That was waaayyy better, especially when you are entering the DCIM folder via PC. In Android, if you have many photos in the DCIM folder, it takes such a long time until all photos are displayed in the explorer and are accessible.
My question is: Does there exists a trick / tool / setting that allows Android to create subfolders in the DCIM folder automaticly?
Any help would be much appreciated, an approach without root would be prefered, but if neccesary I'm also interested in aproaches with root.
Hope someone might have some suggestions.
Greeting from Germany!
Hannes
