to upgrade or not to upgrade? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

just jumped into the fray and once again i am like a duck with its head cut-off.. lost and confused. . . so please bear with me.
my dillemma. i just got a cingular 8525. just found out that its rom is way older than what the current official release from cingular is. so, i guess i should be upgrading right? this being an official release?
what interests me though is ive read about other roms that would offer wm6? now, if i upgrade to these roms, and something goes wrong, will i be able to go back to the official rom by just installing it again?
ive upgraded my moto e398 with MP's, is upgrading to a homebrew rom for my 8525 the same?
thanks.

lol .. definately not the same. Alot of stuff you have to do.. I temp-bricked my 8525 today by not following all the steps... <or being ignorant to a step that I needed to follow..>
first step .. go here:

G4 Bricked

Is there any known way to fix a bricked G4?
bricked or dead explain more your problem
Bricked
It was bricked, I had the Bule, Green, Red screen. But I went to http://www.htcamerica.net/support/81...downloads.html and flashed the original Rom. Thanx for trying to help though, it's much appriciated.
- Artzmaster01
You were just in bootloader screen, it wasn't bricked! Wouldn't hurt if you gave some details.
Jeez . . .
Sorry for being a noob. Is anyone here actually helpful or are all of you just stuck up?

i'm a NOOB too but you can't expect to be spoon fed can you? this is THE development site for our devices and the guys here are helpful to a fault..but what would your mechanic say if you towed your car into the garage and said it doesn't work? you just didn't provide the information required to get an answer...not that you needed an answer from the guys here...it's all in the wiki or do a search it's been asked a thousand times. if your asking for help in future i'd suggest your more civil about, "you'll catch more fly's with honey"
Done that
I think the search engine is broken cuz I've searched for information about what I want to learn and it will tell that it's invalid. And I tried to be civil but the guy practically told me that I was an idiot, there's no need for it.

Strange . . . I didn't get that impression from the replies you got. As far as your searches saying "invalid", I have no idea exactly what your search criteria was, but you might want to use this in the future.
As far as knownuser's reply, he's right on the money. Noone here "owes" you any thing. It's up to YOU to do the reading to learn what you need to know. Everything you need is either in the Wiki or in the forums' threads. The developers here are developing and they don't have time to respond to questions that have already been asked -- and answered -- a thousand times over. If you're not willing to learn by taking the time to read the information that's already available on here, then you don't belong here in the first place. The developers here don't have time to spoon feed every noob that keeps asking the same question over and over.
Now, if MY response makes you feel like an idiot -- if the shoe fits . . .
OK . . .
One . . . I never said that anyone OWED me ANYTHING. Two . . . if it's a question that YOU or anyone else has previously answered, then why answer it again and get frustrated? JUST DON'T REPLY! WOW! Sounds so hard . . . So I screwed up, sue me . . . >=P
P.S. And NO, you didn't make me feel like an idiot. You just made yourself look like a stuck up jack ass

There's a reason many members get frustrated when forced to answer the same question on a regular basis. In their/my eyes this indicates a lack of understanding and reading on behalf of the member who posted the question. This is a known problem with many forums.
P.S You would be well advised not to abuse other established members who obviously know more than you do. On the off chance that you do require assistance again in the near future, abusing other members pretty much gurantees you wont receive it.
Understandable
FINALLY! Someone explaining things WITHOUT trying to rip me a new one. I understand where you're coming from, but I did apologize for being ignorant yet people felt the need to unload their repressed anger towards me. I am truly sorry for getting ahead of myself and I do appreciate all of the hard work that all of the senior members have put into making our HTC experience a good one; but that tends to make themselves into arrogant monarchs who become full of themselves. Trust me, I know what it's like to get frustrated, I'm a karate instructor who has to deal with kids from ages 4 and up 5 days a week. And if any parent here is reading, they know how tough dealing with a 4 year old can be. Try dealing with 30 at a time . . . But no matter how much more I know than someone in the martial arts, I NEVER act better than them. It's bad for business. So in closing, Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this board but frankly some of you need to cool down a bit. Thanx Peter Petrelli (love the SN, Heros rocks!) for being the only one to politely tell me what I did was wrong.
Best way to deal with Senior members with tendency to flame newbies (i confess!) is to ask like you're Shrek's ***** cat making those 'feel pity for me' big eyes:
"Can you please kindly tell me..."
"I've searched for hours and haven't had much luck in finding the..."
"I've used the search engine a lot but most of the results don't work. Can anyone point me on the right direction?"
and son on and so forth
cheers

I love noobie bricks!!
Ok I get interested reading a thread like this.
Honestly is it not easier to say: I have a phone blah blah, which I tried to blah blah blah, and all I'm getting is blah blah, can someone guide me on what to do or is it dead or not dead? (I think bricked has been abused in this case)
All will easily be explained and someone will help. Details do help! First thing I do, whenever I want to do something is read and read the forum. Thats why I have less posts! ha ha I would have asked alot but frankly all the info (to a certain degree) has been provided
noob mistake from a PC tech, lol...
I very stupidly didn't check to see if a Wizard was a G3 or G4 and flashed the WM5 IPL 1.01 downgrade on it thinking it was a G3 and I was setting up for use with LokiWiz. It tried to boot after the flash, but it froze. Now, it just flickers for a split second when I attempt to power it on. I tried entering bootloader through camera + power, camera + reset, comm + voice + reset, as well as mail + camera + power, and nothing is making it enter bootloader. I'm figuring that in my assumption I made an a** outta myself and finally bricked my first phone, after sucessfully flashing about 20. I read somewhere that you could cut your power cord and tap the live contacts to pins 1 and 5 and unbrick a seriously bricked phone, but can't seem to find the article again. Would someone kindly point me in the right direction? Also, has anyone had any luck with this method?
To enter bootloader you keep 'voice' pressed and poke the reset hole briefly but then again it's nothing that doesn't come in the wiki
One of the things that I tried. I didn't list it though, I'm going nuts with this phone. When I do that it still shows nothing. What I think I did was flash the G3 bootloader on a G4 device. Does anyone know the cut cable method?
No, if you do so and make your Wizard can't even power on, then it's a brick. It is nearly impossible to recover unless you know the JTAG method (AFAIK, only 1 person here successfully unbrick a really bricked G4, and he didn't tell us how).
my suggestion for the bricked phone (if indeed it is bricked, ie., it won't turn on at all) is to call HTC up and see if you phone is under warranty. I bought my cingular 8125 off of ebay and i use it with a canadian provider, so there is no warranty from anyone in that case, but suprisingly, when i bricked my G4 and I was gonna send it to get it fixed at whatever cost they were gonna say, they went by the IMEI # and said that it was still under warranty (irrespective of the fact that i bought it off of ebay and that i wasnt a cingular customer) and fixed it at no cost. They even changed the entire housing and put a new one on there for free (no idea why). So call them and try it. You have nothin to loose by calling. Good luck, i understand the pain and anguish and the "kick myself in the a**" feeling when yo flash a G3 onto G4 unknowingly coz thats what happened to me. again, good luck.

[Q] Downgrade from froyo

i have installed a Froyo rom on my vibrant and i was wondering how i go back to stock?
It never ceases to amaze me that people don't have a crystal clear understanding of what they are doing before they go flashing custom ROMS. Why would you even think about putting on a specific ROM unless you knew how to revert back if it dorked up?

We help those who first help themselves. 30 seconds in the development forum would get him the answers he needs. Posting a request for help without first attempting to find an answer on your own is extremely lazy. They're just asking the regulars to do all the heavy lifting for them. "Yeah, I flashed a ROM after doing almost no research and I don't like it. It looks like there's 27 different posts with step by step instructions on how to reverse it, but it's so much easier to just start a 28th post and ask for help. Also, could one of y'all take a plane flight to my hovel in Bangkok where I live and work Odin for me? I'll be in the tub eating takeout food. When you're done, it'd be great if you could come on up the stairs and feed me, and perhaps do something with these curtains?"
The reason you have trouble finding useful information is because your search results get clogged up with people starting threads asking questions answered in other threads. Sometimes in threads on the same page as the one their making. Sometimes with titles that are nearly identical to theirs. These people get flamed because they're part of the problem, not the solution, and after the 9,000th time you see a new thread titled "Kies broke my phone" or "How do I get into recovery?" or "What bootloader do I need for CM7?", you start to get a little batty.

[Q] Advice not given

Okay. I posted my first ever question/request for advice the other day and, despite 79 views, I have had no response. Perhaps it was too dull for those who are more accomplished with all things Android and everybody assumed that somebody else would answer.
Perhaps within the morass of information on these forums the answers are already out there. Maybe, but who knows. In other forums people tend to at least say - look there for answers - and post a link to another thread. But, it has been Christmas and I guess we are all pretty busy this time of year - Merry Christmas to all by the way
So, I thought I would re-shape my question/needs here.
Could anybody give me, or at least point me in the direction of, a glossary of terms type of thing?
I need to know things like what does 'radio' mean? How does it relate to the 'flashing' process' , And any other terms which people take for granted as being blindingly obvious, but which may not be to those of us very inexperienced. This forum can be quite daunting, but still, enquiring minds wanna know
Any help, again, appreciated.

I would've loved to answer but perhaps you need to be more specific on what you want to be answered
you said you wanted to have 2.3.5 on ur DHD,but that doesn't tell anyone what you are asking for,if you are asking us to find a ROM for you,or how to flash a recovery first,or how to flash the ROM !
You should have to provide us more specific data, phone, model, rooted or stock, etc. It is normal that why you don't get replies.

HI, and thank you. Also apologies for my woolly question. And this is kind of my problem. When new to this even the questions I want answered are not always asked correctly. I was hoping to find a ROM for my Desire HD which has Sense 3.0. I have Gingerbread on the phone currently with Sense 2.1.
To be completely humble and honest, which I find to be the best way in almost all cases, I must say that I am not even sure what "how to flash a recovery" means, or "how to flash the ROM".
So, as you see, I am really new to this and feeling my way around. I am a quick learner though so I really just need bringing up to speed on a few of the basics and then I am sure I will be able to research my way around.
Anyway, thank you for your kind reply. I wasn't trying to be shirty with my post. I meant what I said - it is Christmas and I am sure people look in over the holidays but it is a busy time for everybody. I hope I have not caused offence.

Please read before you do anything at all. From your posts it is plain you are very new to Modding so it is very important you understand what your doing as it void your warrenty and if done wrong can brick your device. Start with the stickies in the DHD section and read those a couple of times. Then check the Q&A and read there as well.
As mentioned, read the stickies in your section, there should be a lot of information there. In my device's subfora, there are great stickies chocked full of information. If we had the same device, I'd post some links for you. There's also a glossary of sorts stickied in the Thunderbolt section. Not everything in it will apply to your device but it may help with some general terms.
Before I even rooted my device, I read all of the stickies and recommended links. I then read over the Q&A and general subfora just to get a feel for it. What I read didn't make a lot of sense at the time, but later I remembered it and it made more sense. I then rooted my device, then read and read and read before flashing my first rom (CM6 - it was a while back).
It's a process, and the more you read the more you'll understand, until eventually you can start answering some of the questions that go unanswered. Just give it time... and make sure that you know exactly what you're doing - and why - before you jump in to something.
Good luck!

Hi there Zendel.
Apologies for the lateness of this reply. Been a busy day. I wanted to say thanks for the advice and to also fill in a couple of blanks, if I may.
You are quite correct, I am very new to modding and my only fear is buggering it up, as we say in Lancashire lol. However, it has already been rooted by a friend who took me through the process over the phone some months ago.
When I first got the phone it was with Orange and had all that Orange junk and splash screen etc. Hence, my friend talked me through rooting and installing a standard factory ROM. It was a lot to take in and, at the time, I didn't make any notes along the way, which would have helped me now - hindsight is a wonderful thing, as they say.
More recently he pointed me at a link to a RUU (is that right?) so that I could upgrade from Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3.3 with Sense 2.1 - so, in a nutshell, void warranty is no longer a concern
I have taken a look at some of the stickies, though I have not studied them intensely at this point. I will spend more time looking however and come back, perhaps, with more questions - or at least more relevant questions I should hope

there is a guide in the general section that covers this...why is it some folks want to start a guide this late in the game? the only reason i started mine back in august was alot of the links were broke and some of the information is dated in the stickies. i keep mine updated and everything is covered. if your looking for thanks, then refer folks to it and ill hit your thanks button.
wasnt tyin to start a guide or look for thanx...was just trying to help....some things are confuzing for some.
and thats why there is a guide in the general section with links and step by step instructions...if one thinks its confusing then they need to take a step back and do alot of reading before bricking there device. aside from that this thread is in the wrong section.
then i apologize. there is no doubt u guys r way smarter then myself. im not tryin to step on toes.

My bad, i should have mentioned that ive already used the notorious search button, which apparently leads to ALOT of DIFFERENT threads about the same topic, hence my question, "which is the ULTIMATE thread for noobs"
Im sorry, but I dont know which is the right thread and not, if i did, i wouldnt bother asking that question, would i?
In theory its just downloading a file, unzip it, connect phone to computer and execute, right?
http://youtu.be/vhSSmdqAXRM
However, after a long life, my experience is that it would be convenient to know more than just the action itself, cause there are always traps, which isnt always mentioned or described in those threads cause they take for granted that people who want to do this already know everything about it.
If there are risks involved doing it, like choosing the wrong vers, having the wrong bb etc, i want to learn and be aware of it BEFORE i attempt or even consider doing it, cause i dont want to brick my phone.
Unfortunatelly i have a daytime job, and not much time left for reading through endless threads and comments, thats why i addressed the experienced members in here that already know what im looking for, and can in his, or her way save me for reading all the stuff that i dont need to know, or are irrelevant in my case
Btw, i got a GT-I9300 with 4.1.2 - BB I9300XXEMB5
Dont mean to be rude, but sharing is caring, and i would love to help others in the same way sharing my knowledge, if i could, instead of just inform people about the search function... its getting old.
Im a little tired of all the wise guys in here sitting on their horses pretending to know everything, but isnt willing to help or share in a nice way, instead just being arrogant in a patronizing way.
I can assure you, if you threat people more friendly, people will show more gratefulness in return, and if you dont, u get ungrateful speaches like this in return instead
A good atmosphere is much easier to achieve if you include people, rather than exclude them....
Hope i dint offend you with my "speach"

My bad, i should have mentioned that ive already used the notorious search button, which apparently leads to ALOT of DIFFERENT threads about the same topic, hence my question, "which is the ULTIMATE thread for noobs"
Im sorry, but I dont know which is the right thread and not, if i did, i wouldnt bother asking that question, would i?
there is no "right thread" and they are all full of various things you could do with knowing. there are a lot of people who come here expecting a quick and easy "which is the ULTIMATE thread for noobs" - there is none, they're all relivant.
In theory its just downloading a file, unzip it, connect phone to computer and execute, right?

I agree with everything you said here, which is why you should read the threads, they're all relivant

unfortunately, i also have a day time job (oh what a chore hey?) most of the people, including the devs and the more experienced members here have jobs too, i doubt they all came here with instant vast knowledge on how to flash and all of it's woes, i also doubt they just came here and asked someone to pick out all the best bit for them. I bet they read all the posts, dammit they made the posts, the roms you will use, the rooting procedures. everything on here - for you to say "save me for reading all the stuff that i dont need to know, or are irrelevant in my case" is just being ignorant, as i've said everything is relevant, it seems that you want to know everything and share the knowledge but don't want to read about it - it's the only way to learn

how do you expect to share knowledge, if you don't read all the info and just get told what you want to know?
Im a little tired of all the wise guys in here sitting on their horses pretending to know everything, but isnt willing to help or share in a nice way, instead just being arrogant in a patronizing way.
i'm pretty sure all the "wise guys" on here are fed up with noobs (I by the way, still consider myself a noob) coming here and asking for things to be given to them on a silver platter! we/they are not being patronizing or arrogant, they are simply telling you to do your research - just like they did.
I can assure you, if you threat people more friendly, people will show more gratefulness in return, and if you dont, u get ungrateful speaches like this in return instead
i think you meant treat not "threat" oh and thanks for the assurance . i'm sorry you are being ungrateful just because someone (I) told you to read up! - it's probably not the best way to get help when you refer to the members as "wise guys" "sitting on their high horses" "being arrogant in a patronizing way" - that's how you portray friendliness?

not offended at all :crying:
I'm sorry you feel the way you do, but i'm not being an A$$ - i'm telling you that what you need to know is all in those posts.
i'm done
Of course mate, i didnt expect you to read for me, lol, but i was hoping to get pointed to the "most relevant" thread about what i wanted to know, and probably one single thread would be more than enough info to read up.
Forums like these are getting out of proportions after some years, and sometimes impossible to navigate through, and why shouldnt i be allowed to ask for help or shortcuts? Who made up that rule?
If i had been here two years longer than you, doesnt mean i need to hold back any info cause i had to learn everything the hard way, instead i would gladly at least guide people in the right direction.
Ive been in allot of different forums over the past years with different kinds if subjects, but never a forum like this where people are so grumpy and very little welcoming and including, there are no "welcome to the forum buddy, i will try my best to guide you in the right direction"
Eventually one will find the way on its own, but sometimes its nice to be lead onto the right path.
I totally agree, and i ALWAYS try to find the answers im looking for through the search function before i ask, but when i stall, i post in a friendly and humble way like i tried to in my original post.
If all the answers to your questions was to read through every topic, there would be vert little activity in here, but then again, maybe easier to browse through.
A forum where its "stupid" or not "allowed" to ask questions is to me more equal to Google... yea, Google is your friend, but sometimes you wish to know more spesific things...
And thanks to you too, im not rooting my phone, cause im not able to find the proper info im looking for... and gives me one more reason to get back to my "boring" Iphone again... but hey, life goes on anyway... :good:
they have a link for the rooting guides for the noobs at the section list

I don't want to sound arrogant or anything and I am always happy to help, but if you do not find the guide for rooting... it seems you didn't follow the advice given to you in the posts earlier.
That are stickies in the general section which will help you to understand the basics of rooting, flashing etc. And in addition you have tons of YouTube guides out there.
Hence I wish you good luck, anything is out there for you to learn and share later on, just a little bit of effort is needed to get there.
Btw here you go again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927113 and even at the beginning of the q&a section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2148708

I am going to add that you should pick the method that you actually understand the instructions for . That goes for all other flashes updates etc .
If you don't understand then you will probably be joining the help i bricked my phone club .

Finally someone who understands where im going with this, thanks... And that was the intention with this thread, to get a pointer to the one or maybe two or even three or four threads that covers the most essential things... I dont know whats essential or not (yet), i can surely read dozens of how to's but i still dont know if its the right solution for my phone and the vers i have.
A bit like jb an iphone, just download this and do that... "oh, you had that bb vers" "thats the only one thats not compatible with this vers" sorry u bricked your phone.
But it feels like its just, if u got the balls, or know everything about it, just do it, or everything is at your own risk, its a hit or miss thing...
I dont think i will root my phone after all, cause there are so much info on how to do it that differs from eachother, and nobody cant seem to tell which thread is the right one for MY phone...
But thanks anyway, to those that actually tried to point me there...

Sorry you are wrong a day or two actually reading the basic faqs and guides is the starting point that you don't want to start with .This is after all a developers forum that has no place spoon feeding those that dont want to learn .
Their is no best the basic stickied faqs and guides all say the same as do the instructions for each method .
The confusion lies in answers to posts like this where xx say this way is best and b say no use x .Unfortunately due to multiple same posts it is not that easy to navigate the forum but the answer to that is for noobs to bother reading the facts and guides before posting repetitive questions .
I would in your case read the instructions and use CF Root method .

Look for cf auto root if you don't want recovery to be stock. Use cf root if u want the custom recovery. To all advanced user out there, correct me if I'm wrong.

Haha. Can't edit with xda app. What I really mean is, cf auto root will not change your recovery. Accidentally put "dont" there.
