Changing ActiveSync's sync frequency - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 ROM Development

hello,
i have a question about activesync:
while my ppc is connected to my vista pc it is connected to it over activesync/mobile device center. during this connection, it searchs for any changes on the pc or ppc and syncs them, if there was a change.
but the frequency of these automatic syncs is too high
even if there is no change, it searches for over 2 minutes and during this time the prophet has a 100% cpu usage and responds very slow.
so using the ppc while it is in the docking station is a bit difficult now.
is there any way to decrease this automatic sync frequency?
and it would be nice, if i could disable this completely.
btw: i hadn't this long sync time with pdaviet 4.0.0.0.3. it has started with 4.0.0.0.5 and remained with 4.0.0.0.6.

I'm interested in this as well... I hate how activesync 4.x took away "sync only at connect"
The strange thing is, for older devices, activesync reverts back to the 3.7x interface and allows this option. (i tried with my old typhoon smartphone running wm2003)

no one here knows how to change this? =)

Serveral FAQ's (here for example) claims it's not possible to change manually this frequency starting with ActiveSync 4.x

Disabling ActiveSync's sync frequency
Hello,
I had the same concern in order to reduce ActiveSync frequency.
It seems that there was an frequency tab inside Tools/Options that disappeared since version ActiveSync 4.x .
I just know how to disable ActiveSync when I plug my PDA with an USB cable.
When you plug in the USB cable, a new Network Connection appears that says "Windows Mobile Connection".
Just click on it with the right button and "Disable" it!
That's it. Your PDA gets the battery charged and you only will synchronize when you Enable the connection at the end of the day
Cheers

Working: Hermes + Mac 10.4.8 + AKU 3.3 + USB + MissingSync = Internet!

OK. Like a lot of people, I was horrified to discover that my Mac could no longer use my Hermes' bluetooth connection (DUN) after I upgraded to AKU 3.3. Microsoft lovingly removed DUN and added PAN, which MacOS doesn't support yet (rumors are that 10.4.9 or 10.5.0 will).
So I suddenly was left without a way to connect to the 'net using my phone and my MacBook Pro.
Plugging it up USB didn't do anything -- the Mac had no idea what the phone was, and didn't know how to use it for anything.
Enter MarkSpace MissingSync. I installed the latest version (3.0.1) on my Mac, and plugged in my phone to sync it up. By chance, I ran an 'ifconfig -a' in a terminal window, and noticed this:
Code:
en2: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
ether 80:00:60:0f:e8:00
media: 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex> status: active
supported media: 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex>
So MissingSync is establishing a connection using a faked IP address. OK. Interesting. So I unplug the phone, and go into the all new "Internet Sharing" app on my phone, set it to USB and turned it to connect. I plug my phone back in, and MissingSync tries to start up (and fails). But the IP (en2) is still there. I turn off my Airport (wireless) connection, make sure Bluetooth is disabled (to make sure).. and do a netstat -rn, and lo and behold, my Mac has suddenly taken on my phone as a default gateway.
Code:
Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use Netif Expire
default 192.168.0.1 UGSc 9 40 en2
127 127.0.0.1 UCS 0 0 lo0
And... I'm on the 'net. I didn't have to create any connections, I didn't have to add any routes manually. Nothing. It just worked. (Yeah, I'm amazed, too).
Everything works. DNS, SlingPlayer, Entourage w/ Exchange.
I'm getting around 900/kbps down, 600/kbps up on Cingular/AT&T. Of course I live about 2 miles from Cingular HQ, so that's probably to be expected..
In MissingSync, turn *off* USB syncing, and it won't throw as many errors -- just sync via Bluetooth, but the drivers are still there, so it still comes up with an IP address and pseudo-ethernet device.
MarkSpace needs to market this. Awesome. It's not as convenient as bluetooth, but it's a lot faster, and you have the added benefit of charging your phone at the same time.
oh.. and one more thing... you can still use your phone for voice phone calls (when you're on 3G), and data. It works just like your're not plugged into it. And you can use a bluetooth headset with your phone while you're connected.
edited: make sure "use advanced usb networking" is turned OFF in the Settings>Connections page on your phone.
Wow, just tried this myself on cingular as well, 150k/sec down and 90k/sec up using EDGE. Extremely easy as well, just kinda works by itself if you have MissingSync installed. Posting using my TYTN right now actually.
I'm on the medianet unlimited plan so I connect through wap.cingular. Will I get hit for any additional data charges for tethering?

Very doubtful, although I don't know for sure. My phone is set to use MediaNET, and uses wap.cingular. I have PDA Unlimited Connect. From all appearances on Cingular's billing page, a notebook hooking into your phone via this method just looks like ordinary phone data to Cingular.
Now... I wouldn't use this as a primary internet connection. I'd bet if you put several gigs through the phone, they're going to get suspicious.
I actually use around 4-5 gigs a month normally (just with ActiveSync polling for mail and normal use), and they've never said anything to me.. so.. who knows.
Unfortunately, it's so difficult to get info from Cingular/AT&T these days (I'm still trying to get my [email protected] to work)..
My billing cycle is up in 7 days -- I will post back here if I see any different charges on my bill.
If this works, I'm going to hump your leg.
wow, works. time to start humping. i love you. please, bear my children.
btw, definitely worth adding to the wiki.
I am assuming that disabling the connection in Internet Sharing restores Missing Sync's normal (supported sync) functionality? Great pick-up. I already have Missing Sync and my 8525 will be here on Wednesday. Thanks.
Damn, I can't afford Missing Sync
Oh well, I bought it anyway. I'd already played with version 2.5 so I knew it was starting to get good. I can make use of some of the other features, (like importing my cameraphone snaps into iPhoto) but this internet sharing feature is why I bought it. And it works just as you said:
1) Run "Internet Sharing" on the phone with 'PC Connection' set to USB.
2) Plug into the Mac.
In fact "Missing Sync for Windows Mobile" shows up as a network interface in System Preferences / Network, too.
This is actually a lot nicer that the old way I used to do it. Before AKU 3.3 and Missing Sync 3 I was getting Internet access on my iBook over Bluetooth using Internet Connect and a lot of faffing around with modem scripts. I eventually found one that worked.. .but I always had to 'dial' 3 times before it connected and it took about 2 minutes to get a connection.
Now I can just plug in and go ... and my phone doesn't need a separate power supply to keep me connected all day. ** very happy **
(Yes, they should really advertise this!)
i'd really like my hermes to work on my Linux box, since I use it as my main system over XP.. i read a few articles regarding this, and it turns out the older version of synce worked on most HTC devices.. but for some odd reason the new ones dont seem to.. someone did mention that WM5 devices weren't supported for now.. the older WM2003 does tho..
if it makes any difference, I'm on Ubuntu Linux 6.10 32bit version..
any help is appreciated..

I followed the (lenghty) instructions on the synce site, and it works for me with my TyTN. I have not set up contact syncing, but I can browse/copy/run stuff from my Ubuntu 6.10 installations on my TyTN.
i'll give it another shot.. thanks for the confirmation..

I don't have en2 when connecting in Share mode
MDA Compact III
What version of Missing Sync are you using? It's working for me using version 3.01
It's 3.0.0 (315) and it reports as the latest.
Well that's clearly not true I suggest you download the new version from the site (I only got this a few days ago).
Upgraded to the 3.0.1 (downloaded from the site). The client on the phone upgraded as well. Still nothing. On the sync mode there is en2 connection (with orange status) in the network preferences. When I activate the sharing mode it disappears. Checked in terminal as well.
And you're *definitely* using AKU 3.3 on the phone?

I'm sure it's 3.x but may not be 3.3. How do I check this?
So, can it use bluetooth to link up my Hermes (AKU 3.3) and connect to the internet from my macbook thru the Hermes??

I don't believe so, I've only tried using the "USB" setting. Besides, the phone gets power through the USB cable and more bandwidth. There is no advantage to using Bluetooth except not needing a cable!

WMDC ActiveSync No Connection

I have an Advantage x7500. I've installed the WM6 ROM here. My problem is I can't connect to my Advantage via Windows Mobile Device Center on my Vista box or ActiveSync on my XP box. The computer makes the expected sound when the USB connection is made, and in ActiveSync I can explore the device, but that's it. In WMDC, the error message for RapiMgr is "Windows Mobile-based device failed to connect due to communication (0x80072745) failure (see data for failure code)." I've done a lot of searching before I posted this and found a lot of posts (so at least I'm not alone). I've disabled firewalls, AV, anti-spyware, but no change. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled WMDC and ActiveSync. I do notice in Device Manager no Windows Mobile Remote Adapter under the Network Adapters node. Under the Mobile Devices node is HTC USB Sync. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I've been beating my head on wall on this. Thanks.

Thanks, but been there, done that. (I didn't want to waste everyone's time so I did use the search button first)
As I mentioned in my prior message, in Device Manager there is no Windows Mobile Remote Adapter under the Network Adapters node. Do those of you using WM6 have such an entry for that adapter?
.
I have the same problem, but in Vista.
Sync has been working fine, but now suddenly it wont connect.
.
ps: sync on my SPV C500 works perfect. It's only my X7500 that won't connect.
..
lo and behold.....xman06's solution in the other tread worked for me.
"Try to go on setting connection usbtopc and disable advanced network functionality and ok"
perfect

Thanks, but been there and done that too. (The downside of searching first is that all the usual solutions have been tried)
Tell me, under Device Manager do you have Windows Mobile Remote Adapter under the Network Adapters node? And under the Mobile Devices node do you have HTC USB Sync? I'm missing the former; that may be the issue but I'm not sure not knowing if others have it or not.
I bit the bullet and did a hard reset (too bad that doesn't work on spouses ) and ActiveSync started working again.
Kaiser / TyTN II WMDC Activesync no connection
I have the same issue described above. And no, the solutions given don't work. Not even a hard reset.
I am not sure what the issue is. Any ideas?
Similar problem solved
I had the same problem and went through many steps like those posted in this forum. I'm going to show my steps to solve this problem without hard reset your phone.
1) When the phone is connected, at the phone ActiveSync setting delete the PC profile.
2) Unplug the phone from the PC.
3) Uninstall and then reinstall the ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Center.
4) At phone system setting -> About -> make sure there is a name ID. Without this the PC cannot identify the phone and thus cannot sync.
5) Set the USBtoPC with 'advance network..." enabled.
6) To the extreme, before step 3, go to PC windows\inf and remove infcache.1 (need to add in an administrators account and set the privilage to full control). That may remove old corrupted drivers.
This page was coming up on the top list of google so i'll post my solution here.
I also spent hours trying to find the problem
uninstalled/reinstalled WMDC/Downloaded the latest version etc/Hard reset TYTN II/followed endless google searches, followed the instructions here etc etc.
Similiar to the OP i had windows making the "normal ding dong sounds but no connection happening.
In the finish what fixed my problem was with the device plugged in go to Device Manager on the PC and in "Network Adapters" select "Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter" and right click "Update Driver Software"
That got me back connected.....Hope it helps someone else out
Did it worked? I can't install WMDC without having my Pocket PC conected and when I have it it doesn't install anyway...
hey guys, if you have firewall installed disable it until the connection is made with your computer and phone, then re-enable your firewall.
this seems to be the problem solution for me all the time. Hope it helps.

WM6 Bluetooth sync with WMDC Vista how?

Guys, I've waited to find a solution, it's been almost 10 months, and I wonder if I'm the only one with the problem. I can sync via USB cable, but not via Bluetooth. My setup:
Computer: Vista Ultimate 32bit running WMDC v 6.1
PPC: Dopod 181pro G3 WM6 PDAViet 4005b.
Any help appreciated. Thank you.
You must change AS config. on your PPC for BT connection
What do you mean? Under my BT in my PPC, I have ActiveSync checked. It does try to connect with WMDC, but it just never actually connects.
Has anyone gotten bluetooth sync to work under Vista and WM6? I'm starting to think there is either something missing on the WM6 PDAViet, or the Vista BT stack is missing something.
So, find the bluetooth settings in Vista. I can't help you much here since I'm using a german version.
Systemsteuerung\Hardware und Sound\Bluetooth-Geräte
(Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Bluetooth-Devices?)
Open the panel and select COM-Ports, and add a Port for an incoming connection. Don't forget to pair the devices and tell the WMDC its allowed to use Bluetooth connections.
hope it works for you
p.s. I can't get my WM5 device to connect, its an hx4700. My Hermes works fine (WM6). Any suggestions on that maybe?
Ok thanks all, I finally got it kinda working. Kinda, cause it doesn't work all the time for some strange reason. The only thing I did to finally get it to work is, after I paired the PPC and computer up, I went to the BT icon on my desktop and clicked it open, and selected the 'HTC Phophet' icon, and under the service tab, I checked off Activesync. Then it was able to connect. It took a while to connect though, and also sometimes, it would not connect. Also, the speed is really slow, for example, to browse my PPC folders takes a very long time. I wonder if it's my upgraded radio rom. I will see if rebooting or soft resetting the PC/PPC would solve anything. Thanks again.

if you see "serial port" instead of "active sync" during getting them to 'see each other' you may check "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SerialPort" key using regedit.
you have to change it to your bluetooth stack's incoming COM port (usually COM7). You will probably see "Bluetooth" in that key. just change it to "COM7" and restart the computer then rebind the devices.
it worked for me on my vista.

OK, did a search in RegEdit for
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\SerialPort"
but it didn't find this....
I do see
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\" with several subfolders in it....
One folder is called 'Extended Serial' and another is 'Services'....
Can you be verify the path to the item I should edit???
Thanks!

it is not a path but it is a REG_SZ (string) key.
sorry, my mistake. I should have written SerialPort key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services.
see the attached image.
it was "Bluetooth" before I change it.
I had no option to select COM7 in WMDC because it is marked as "used" in another registry but changing it and reinstalling the bluetooth stack is a harder way to fix. so just change it to whichever port your stack is using for incoming serial. you must have an option to check it in control panel.

Weird thing is that my X7501 and laptop can 'see each other' but still doesn't sync....when I click on 'sync' in ActiveSync on X7501 nothing happens and on laptop Mobile Device Center says 'Not Connected' and Sync Center shows the partnership with my X7501 as 'grayed out' looking.....
Not sure what you mean by 'you must have an option to check it in control panel...
Any suggestions as to what to check now???
Why Don't I See 'ActiveSync' Listed in BT Services List?
Seems that the problem I'm having getting my 7501 to sync to a PC via BT has to do with no having ActiveSync show up in the list of available services in BT partnership settings.
I just see Serial Port listed, not ActiveSync.
Could it be that I need to install ActiveSync again?
I'm using Vista on PC so I thought it uses Mobile Device Center and Sync Center which comes built-in to Vista. So didn't install ActiveSync myself...
Does ActiveSync install anything onto a mobile device like the X7501?
Thanks,
Mark
Frustrated X7501 BT Sync'r.....
GOT BT Sync Finally!
Just thought this might help someone else down the road to know what the problem turned out to be on why I couldn't BT Sync my X7501 and my laptop....
I called HTC this morning. They were actually extremely helpful!
Turns out that my laptop was using BlueSoleil BT software instead of MS BT Stack...deleted BlueSoleil and restarted and voila! MS BT Stack installed and then I could see ActiveSync service on my X7501!!!!
Who would of thought about that.....

I have the same problem. Seems to be a fairly common one. My WM6 PPC (with Active Sync) will not sync via bluetooth to my Vista Ultimate "powered" machine with WMDC. No trouble syncing via USB. Also no trouble with bluetooth pairing of the PPC and my machine or sending files (directly) from one to the other via bluetooth. Just no syncing of Calender, Tasks, etc. over bluetooth. Kind of infuriating.
Also possibly worth noting---I had no trouble syncing same PPC to my old XP powered machine with Active Sync. Why did Microsoft insist on "improving" on something (Active Sync) that worked just fine and was straightforward to use? Vista and WMDC in particular are steps backward in my view.
Pointless griping aside, the symptoms suggest that bluetooth stacks are working, that active sync and WMDC are talking (over USB), just no syncing, suggesting something is inconsistent in the way the ports are set up, just as others have implied in this thread.
Incidentally I tried everything listed in this thread, including the Regedit modification (all of this made a lot of sense given the problem) and still get no response when I try to sync over bluetooth.
On my ppc the only options for com ports are COM2, COM4, COM6 and COM8. Does this matter?
Help!? Please.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Well, as for myself, it tured out that my problem had something to do with the pocket pc ROM I installed, as posted in the first thread. It would sync a few times at first, then never again. So, all this time (years) I've just done it with USB wire.
Now I just got done upgrading my Prophet to Ultimate v 2 ROM. And my BT active Sync is now working like normal. I knew from the description of the first paragraph there was something wrong with my flash of the new ROM or the ROM itself. Anyway, now it's working like normal. It's now time to go fix my headphone jack that is stuck in headphone mode lol. I need a new PPC!

Problem with ActiveSyn via Bluetooth and IrDA on WM6

Hi There,
I have upgraded my Atom Life to WM6 (latest version from O2 site). Everything works well. But I have problems with syn via bluetooth and IrDA. Please see my problem below:
Before syn with bluetooth or IR, I can syn with USB well.
* For IrDA:
+ When I choose syn with IR from activesyn menu on Pocket PC it shows "Attention required" then I click on this it shows "Connection Not valid: cannot open the connection 'infrared port'. This connection does not exist or no longer support. Select a difference connection or try again"
+ I am sure that: IR in range and I can do this many time on WM5 as well as send and receive file between my Atom life and My Laptop.
* For Bluetooth:
+ When I choose syn with Bluetooth from activesyn menu on PPC it show "Cannot find an existing Bluetooth partnership with a PC that supports ActiveSyn Would you like to set up Partnership now?"
+ I am sure that: Bluetooth in rang and pair with my laptop, I can send and receive file between my Atom life and Laprop. I can syn via bluetooth with WM5 many times.
If anyboby know what are the problems and solutions for these please let me know. If you can point me some document that would be great.
Thanks in advance
I dont own Atom Life, however sounds like you havent got the COM Ports configured properly...with MS generic bt drivers add (Incoming connection) port (usually COM3 is selected by default) after adding the port go to Connection settings in Activesync and under (allow connection to one of the following) select COM3. Assuming you have already paired your device now go to bt connection settings in device and tap your PC name then tap refresh, wait until it discovers A/S, tick the box then add a com port on your device too. I usually select COM6 but I do not believe it matters. good luck if that doesnt work then you should ask O2.
PS...if you already have an existing partnership and its not syncing, then delete partnership from PC and device and start again.
Thanks for your information but I still not work. I did check carefully incoming connection port and I also configured allowing connect wireless on ActiveSync to connect this port. Every step, I think correctly because I configured and sync with WM5 in the day before I update WM6. I don't know why It happens when I upgrade to WM6 then I could not syn with Bluetooth and IrDA. Maybe, I should get help from O2 support centre.

Activesync Help Thread

-PLEASE KEEP THIS THREAD FOR SOLUTIONS AND UNLISTED PROBLEMS- Not COMPLAINTS!!!! A Complaint without a Solution is Worthless
I definitely don't have any good answers to the age 'ol problem of connectivity issues with Activesync. I have been scouring the internet for hours and hours and hours trying everything and anything imaginable to get it working flawlessly. I haven't seen a Thread like this anywhere so I thought I would make one with easy, quick navigation to a system of solutions.
What I am running and have tested the following avenues on:
ROM Version: DCD 3.2.5Radio Version: 3.42.30
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is what all the different forums recommend:
- Reinstall Activesync- 4.5 is the most resent and, supposedly with the fewest bugs.
- Restart both desktop/laptop and also soft reset the PPC
- If you are running a Firewall, either:(a) Follow the instructions on this page to add ports to your firewall to allow communication with Activesync(b) Completely turn off your Firewall. "Not reccomended"
- Some sites recommend that you turn off your antivirus to see if that helps. "Also not recommended"
- Ensure that no other program is using the same port/ports that activesync also uses. Most of these programs are file sharing, remote login, and other similar programs. -If other programs do exist, either alter their ports or turn them off completely
- On the PPC- toggle the "Enable advanced network functionality" on and off- located START->SETTINGS->CONNECTIONS->USB to PC
- Opening Outlook. Some say this helps Activesync connect.
- One far fetched idea is to continuously pull out and plug in the USB cord until it connects. If it still doesn't connect, restart PPC and try again.
- Replace the USB cable and/or trying different USB ports on the computer---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have done everything imaginable and I can't seem to get any kind of a reliable connection.
Here is a list of all the issues I have had:
~ Activesync connects and never syncs, arrows turning~ Activesync in the Sys Tray says connected- arrows stopped, but the program says connecting- arrows turning- Never connects~ Activesync connects, starts to sync- then suddenly disconnects and no longer recognizes the device~ Activesync tries to connect but says it cannot communicant with device- Runs troubleshooter and finds nothing wrong~ Windows identifies device as unknown and avtivesync does nothing- even searching for the device turns up nothing.
Some of these issues are a hit an miss, but I am almost guaranteed to have one of the above problems every time I try to connect.
If anyone has any more ideas for me, that would be great! Please help spread the word of known fixes to the horrible world of Activesync.
I truly hope this helps everyone who reads it.

Have you tried deleting all the mobile devices showing up and then start over.....you can also go into the device manger and delete everything there as well....if anything is showing....
I am experiencing the exact same issue with the exact same Rom/Radio. Now when I go to Connections\USB to PC and try to uncheck "Enable Advanced network functionality" I get this message: Failed to disable RNDIS to use Serial. Hope this helps in troubleshooting.
Thanks for all you do DCD and GC!
Web2mail calendar & Desktop Calendar
After signing up with Web2mail live version my active sync has two accounts. The outlook account I familiar with and the exchange server account via mail2web.com.
Is it possilbe to sync my desktop calendar under activesync with the exchange server calendar? Any pointing to help, threads or pdf manuals would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that if you click on each account under activesync you will be able to select what you want to sync with each, but cannot be in both. I do all but e-mail on my work PC. Use the Exchange server for e-mails. When I plug into cable on PC it will sync both the exchange server and the PC items.
