Hey guys,
I just got my mogul and am just starting to mess around with it. I am looking at custom roms, and would like to understand what they are doing, and eventually figure out how to make my own.
I am having trouble understanding how the rom file works. I downloaded one of dcd's clean rom to have a look at it, but i cant get past the 02_OS.nb file. what is this file, and how do I interpret it? Is there some program that i can use to extract it (if it even works like that)? I found the nbh extractor program on the wiki, but i cant find anything to do with the nb files on the wiki, or through the search function for that matter.
Thanks for any help,
Stuart
Sturatt,
What you are trying to do takes quite a bit of research and lots of getting stuck trying to figure things out. It sounds like you are very new to this and if that is the case I would definately do a lot more reading first. I got into making my own roms based on others roms within kitchens and it took me about a month or two to say I actually understand what I am doing and I still don't know how to do a lot of things.
Anyway if you don't want to spend tons of time messing with roms I would suggest getting a rom that has alrady been built by guys that have tons of knowledge such as DCD's roms, Custels roms, Colonels roms etc. The first two have postings on this forum, there are others at the ppcgeeks forum.
That being said if you do want to spend the time check out http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=10401 this is a discussion on what you are trying to do and there are some links to tutorials.

Start with downloading and learning to install custom pre-made ROMs. Read all relevant material as links to other discussion boards are just about everywhere. With custom ROMs, you can find a base that you like and as you develop your ROM skills, you can take it to the next level by further tweaking a ROM to suit your needs.
Research, some trial & error, make plenty of back-ups and prepare to do some hard resetting!
Awesome, thanks guys. I realize it is going to be pretty tough, but i would rather learn it and understand what is going on, so no i dont mind reading a ton of stuff, i was just having trouble finding the stuff to read.
jjlwork and xweaponx thanks for the good advice. and If anyone else has some good articles/links for a beginner in this area, or anything interesting, please post away! In the mean time ill read that thread you posted, and look for more like it.
Thanks again,
Stuart
Let me know what kind of applications you are looking for or what you would like your phone to do and I will try to get you pointed in the right direction...

not really, just lots of reading and testing things. i never had a ppc before august 07 or so. take it slowly, try one thing at a time.
I'm about to get an 8525. What are some recommended ROMS? I'm interested in getting that slide to unlock feature, and the Cube thing. These are the only 2 that I know. Are there any other ROMS I would probably enjoy? I also want a ROM that can support 4gb.
How about fixes/enhancements to the 8525? I have heard of a fix so that every time you close an app, the app exits and closes, rather than having it run in the memory.
Like I said, I'm new to this, so I'm just asking for some recommendations/advice from experienced users. Just point me in the right direction. Thanks.
i will give a piece of advise everyone tells newbies, read the wiki, read the stickies. no one here is going to spoonfeed you. as for rom recommendations, there is NO "best rom". everyone has their own preferences. just search for any thread asking for rom recommendations and you will see that each and everyone of them have many, many different responses. for the cube, you dont have to get a rom with one built in, you can always install it. here's a link from the wiki
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Cube
for closing programs......there a tons and tons of apps that will do that for you. htc x-button, magic button, quickmenu, etc. the list just goes on.
i was in your position probably about 6 months ago....
check out these links, they will tell you everything you need to know:
general overview
http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/
ROM options:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320370
the ROM that i chose for my 8525:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=342168
fyi, those are good recommendation options...but keep in mind that the "ROM" Option thread post #1 has not been updated since 1/28/08. There has been many new cooked roms since then!
Hey thanks a lot aga080 and galaxys! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! That's all I was looking for.
And LOL!!! "no one here is going to spoonfeed you" umm yea.. whatever.
Like I said, I just needed to be pointed in the right direction.
Just remember to Hard SPL your Hermes first. Its written all over the forum BUT people STILL dont seem to do it... Welcome to the Craze...... And remember, when all friends and your loved ones shun you because you are forever flashing/upgrading, We'll still be here......... Scary, huh... Cheers..

Welcome to the forum...Happy Flashing!!
Since you don't want to stand up and be counted because you are afraid of being PM'd to death, take some time to answer the poll.
I suspect that the current root methods that are being worked on are being worked on by the rest of us and not being touched by the devs.
Prove me wrong, because as far as I can tell, all the devs are rooted and in ROM la-la land not giving two Sh!ts about the rest of us.
BTW - not a leaker. My phone was broken and replaced with a 2.1 RUU with 1.49.0000.

Who the hell are you to tell someone to take some time to do anything for you? Did your mother teach you ANY manners? These people do these things without any guarantee of payment, so unless your gonna put some cash up, I suggest you learn some of said manners.

So what? Because you ran into bad luck they OWE you something? I Hope everyone here who cares to support the devs submits a false answer to your poll so that it never does you one scrap of good. Maybe when you will learn some humility you can come back and PROPERLY ask them for something.

Amen to that. This is the kind of bullsh** that makes devs run away from our community, not towards it. If you want to ***** at somebody, call up HTC and tell them you can't root your phone. I'm sure they will be VERY sympathetic and offer to send you an Incredible instead.
lol sucks for u
You are a prime example of a entitlement complex. Seriously, they already dedicate all their spare time to us and helping us. If you're so pissy about it, you find out a way and help the community, don't sit there and *****.
I can pretty much guarantee you the SECOND you get root, you won't give a **** about any non-rooted people and only focus on ROMs.
Do you also expect verizon to erect a cell tower near your house and a mini AP in your car so you have perfect service wherever you go?
+1 to everything said above, also learn to search, there is already a root method for 1.49 s-on you idiot. The great devs of our commmunity already found an amazing loop
I LOL at you.
if I were a dev, i would stop working on rooting 1.49 after a post like this.
As a non-dev, I am disheartened to see this type of post in the Development thread. Have you seen the number of posts in the 1.49 leak-root threads? There are currently folks working on two distinct methods of rooting - isn't that proof enough for you? Also, was anyone here responsible for "making" you go to the leaked version? No? Well then why are the dev's responsible for giving you a cookie for the decision you made?
Also, to all of the people that say, "I can't be bothered to read all 100+ pages" or similar - please do. 99.9% of the time you will find the answer to your question within those posts - or hey, try the magical search box.
I personally want to thank the dev's that have been helping us with finding just the right exploit. As you can see, there has been a lot of work looking at the leak, RUU, hboot, and various methods to finally achieve [an easy way to] root the Eris. This community has been extremely helpful, innovative, and downright awesome in helping folks like me learn the ins and outs of the Android System and the Eris. Don't screw it up for the rest of us.
Mean ol' devs..
Y'all BETTER be working on root for Eris, or I'll... I'll..
I'll get REALLY mad..
In all seriousness, the points made in the responses are valid.. Father_Vic chose poor wording to express frustration, and some of his frustrations are borne out of simply being unaware of some things..
Root for 2.1 in general is being sought actively by all sorts of devs and would-be devs. I'm pretty sure there are fewer and fewer devs working directly on Eris, other than to try to make holes found elsewhere a little bit more open to the masses, a la the efforts by Tereg and company.
Are they working on it night and day? Hellz no. After you've tried the same stuff over and over a few times, you move on to either new angles on old stuff, or new stuff, altogether. Otherwise, people call you crazy or naive.
This poll seems like it'd be helpful on the surface, if just to provide reassurance for us poor 1.49ers without root, but the ones that respond affirmatively may or may not be totally clueless when it comes to anything other that running downloaded scripts, and as for the devs that really do understand, well..
Don't worry about this stuff running devs off.. The real devs LOVE to solve problems, because it's like crack cocaine to figure stuff out, and what they really don't give 2 $hitz about is polls..
Can we get this thread moved to General? Not sure that just deleting it would help anybody..
+1 to all said
if you really wanted root than maybe you should learn how to develop and try and find it yourself
I have uncovered the PERFECT root method for 1.49 bootloader. BUT after reading this so called post, I now refuse to ever release it. bwahahaahahahahahahahahahaha
no seriously...come on dude. little...well rude wasnt it.
We (including myself) are all working on it. The root method that exists has an extremely low success rate. We are all trying different things, we are all trying different methods and we are all devoting hours a day to try to bust this thing open. The eris is one of the only phones not rooted by means other than a rooted link. Some of us feel we are going at this alone without any real help from the devs. Plus anytime we have asked if any of the silent devs are working on it or have any suggestions; "flame on" from the rooted majority.
Not entitlement - just wondering if those of us fending for ourselves are getting any help from those who can.
BTW - to assert that we just go ahead and learn what the devs know really is insulting to the devs. All the time, effort, education, and knowledge that they have is not something that we can all just learn to do in a couple of days.
I knew the flame was coming....
Keep going, it actually makes pretty fun reading.

I have a rooted phone, replacement on the way, I'm not getting my hopes up for a 1.47 hboot im sure 1.49 will come unfortunately, and seeing the low success rate with the current root methods I'm afraid im gunna hate my Eris again, and now any devs who were putting their FREE time in to help with something that doesn't even benefit them as they are already rooted. Thanks for pushing people away from helping us, and it's just great that it is all fun and games to u. I understand were u are coming from, but this is just bull crap. thanks for nothin.

Up to this point you seem to almost have found some humility. Keep the attitude portrayed here and maybe send out a few PMs asking for help, politely, you may get somewhere, you may not... I GUARANTEE you get farther than your first post.
And as for some of the rest of your comments, MANY a "dev" has started not with college, but in the exact same place you are.

If it is a referb phone, you have some hope. I just got my Eris replacement (after rooting 2.1), and it was 1.5 with a 1.47 bootloader, so there is some hope.
i was working on root until i saw this post. its idiots like you that piss off the devs and make us go elsewhere.
if you are posting this just for fun, to get the laughs and eat your popcorn, then f&%# off. we dont want you here, demand things from the devs, demanding we speak up so you know who we are. if you really want to know who the devs are, that will most likely be anyone on there with more than 200+ posts. the ones that you know there nicks to because they spend most of their time on here posting to help n00bs like you out getting root, or answering the question of which rom is the best or how to install your bootanimation file.
you really want to know who the devs are? they are the ones that sit in the irc channel all day (chat.andirc.net) and are any of the ops on there, or have a uptime of 72hours straight.
you want me to compose a list of all the devs, and then another list of all the devs working on root for you?
here is that list for you:

Hey guys! I don't want anyone to see this as fishing for compliments or thanks, so let's kill that idea first.
I was recently nominated and accepted as a Recognized Contributor here on xda, so I just wanted to kinda give you guys a formal and friendly introduction.

I've been an Android geek for nearly two years now, and have absorbed a lot of information in that time. While I may not be able to build my own rom or submit fixes on github, I do retain information very well and try to help out everywhere I can. I just want everyone to know that if you guys ever need help with something or just need a little guidance, feel free to ask me and I'll do the best I can to respond in a timely manner. I know the big world of root and custom roms can be a bit daunting at first, but that's why we help our newer members learn rather than gripe at them.
You guys can either post questions here or PM me, but I do ask that you try and figure it out on your own first. You'll learn a lot more that way. I promise, that's how I learned everything I know.
Devs, this goes for you too. If you need a last minute tester for something, I'm almost always available to help. I'm willing to switch roms on a dime and flash/push files to the phone. I'll be putting my GTalk ID on my profile soon, so you guys can reach me if need be.
I hope I can be as useful as possible to you guys! Happy rooting to you!

thanks brO!! its nice to see there still are some decent people who are here to help.. i respect that..
same here...good to see some more help for sure. But anyways ive just got one question here for ya and you may or may not be able to help me. ive tried to ask this in the forums and haven't got an answer so here it goes.
My phone gets warm up around the camera area almost immediately it seams like. it starts when i start using data such as scrolling around Facebook or downloading an app, etc...and was just wondering if that's normal or should i get a replacement? $590 bucks is a lot for a phone and i just want it right ya know.
Now the only reason i ask this is cuz my gnex does the same thing but it gets really hot after about 15 to 20 mins of using data.
thanks a lot for all your hard work and support for dummies like me that dont know anything lol...

wow sorry bud but that's just way too much information to just drag over here to your thread it all depends on if you're capable of doing the job correctlyI would highly recommend going over to the development section and just start reading that is the only way you are going to know for sure is 250 peoples experiences not just one that comes over here to your thread and decides to give you a quick easy information. It is what it is.everything you dreamed of knowing about this device is here if you're willing to look for it...there are a bunch of very very recent development items that you're going to want to do your own homework on anyway not just one guy that thinks he knows it all come over here and help you screw up your device...good luck and enjoy your new Kindle
to sum it up there are risks with everything depending on ability to do proper research, comprehension level and ability to follow directions. .hell for some wiping their ass and tying their shoes have more risk than safestrap does when used properly.
@jimyv : I look around some similar thread, I can see many of your comment, you always typed many many things, but mostly no useful information for newbie point of view, even an useful link.
If you can not help them, just get out and no need to comment.
Sorry, but it is a little bit annoyed here.

well I'm sorry that you haven't found many of my comments useful obviously you haven't read very many of them but obviously some of my more aggravated ones have caught your attention you're welcome to look at my profile and check out my activity for the last year and a half I helped over a dozen people fix their bricked devices and contributed and many many helpful links which resulted in nothing but people trolling and being lazy and lazier and lazier I am simply trying to get people to do as I did and research and find their own information before adding additional clutter tothe forums...it's fine to be a noob everybody has been a noob at one time. And when you spend enough time here and with enough devices you will figure out that you just cannot help lazy people that are unwilling to find their own research at least to an extent. You're welcome to spend hundreds of hours of your time running around the forums cutting and pasting links to help the lazy ones but soon you will figure out that's all you are doing is enabling a growing problem. in other words the more I have helped them the less they actually knew orlearn because of not doing something the long way.
as some would say anything worth having is worth earning it yourself for the hard work / research. I noticed that most of the folks that do exactly these kinds of threads all of a sudden think they know everything. And then brick because they don't know near as much as I they need to because somebody came over to their one thread and gave them a little information or a couple of links. that they only partially read anyway. And then they are starting another thread. Titled PLEASE HELP I BRICKED MY DEVICE!!! identical to 30 threads that are dealing with the identical situations and .I have personally been up for several hours at a timetrying to help these types of people and they just simply cannot follow directions. And or most the time trying to translate it and screw it up in the translation somehow and then run away and start another thread because they still cannot get it right no matter how many people are trying to help them or how many links you give them. It's a waste of resources and everybody's time.it's just unbelievable to me that all this information is here already if they would just go and find them. they just choose not to. or believe they do not have the time to read them and expect special treatment and or catered to for some reason...I'm sorry I made the time and I'm a busy man and it seems disrespectful to me for anybody else to think they deserve different treatment
so to sum it up you are welcome to spend even half as much time in these forums researching reading and dragging pasting and copying links and see if you don't get a little bitter when you like to come here and find stuff yourself and its all cluttered up with repetition and threads starting with a question that was answered in the thread that was right below theirs READ THE THREADS and learn from other peoples experiences. Then you will adequately realize the risk that you are taking. You are not getting enough information when you start one of these threads to go doing the modifications that people are doing. All the information is here .
that's annoying it happens way too often and a lot more often than my snappy comments..

glad somebody still has a sense of humor lol I know from experience you can tend to get a little jaded hanging around here too much. I can't help but lurk though..I do own three HDX devices and development has been pretty much a dead fish.( until very recently I must say very cheesy) Compared to the other 15 devices that I maintain for myself and family. As a full-time mechanic and father I spend way too much time in here I know. and to those that have been insultedby what I have had to say I am probably speaking directly to you ,others probably just get a kick from me watching get aggravated. And many more out there that are silent know exactly what I am speaking of and refuse to help anybody anymore because said issues (much of the true talent) unfortunately, and that is the true loss.
