I Upgraded to at least three versions of the wm6 custum roms with shelltool on a G4 device. All goes well except the contacts manager will not operate and also activesync 4.5 errors out when syncing (needs more memory) Memory is ok on the device. Software conflict? Has anyone else had this problem. How can I fix it. Maybe a problem when overwriting the old contacts manager?
I have the same problem with my G4. Help us anyone?
Are you restoring a WM5 PIM backup to WM6? They are not compatible.
I've got it figured out. Apparently, the pim.vol is corrupted after every rom update I did on my G4. All I did was rename the file to something else, soft reset and the whole problem is solved. A new pim.vol is automatic created and I deleted the renamed pim.vol. I restored my contacts list through PPCPimBackup. Everything is good now. Kudos to dotfred for the Pimbackup program and Whiterat for his very fast and stable WRCX roms!
where is the pim.vol file? is it in the windows folder?
It is in root directory

:?: I think I have done my homework, having searched the Forums for help here, but I am still boggled.
I enjoy trying out the new ROM's and Radios as they come out, but am tired of resetting everything on my machine after each upgrade/downgrade. I understand that it is unsafe to backup and then restore to a different ROM version, but need some stratgey to minimize continued reloading and resetting everything each time I upgrade/downgrade.
Questions: If changing only a Radio Stack version, leaving the ROM and EXT ROM versions unchanged, can I do a full backup and then restore safely?
I am also confused as to what the best, most complete backup method might be. I have too many options. Backup in Activesync, import expoert databases, xBackup or Permenant Save on XDA II, .reg backup from reg editor?
Is there another program that is better than any of these options?
Would one of you XDA II Wizards help out us novice apprentices and post a tutorial explaining the real story about backup/restore when switching ROMS and Radio Stacks? Your efforts would be appreciated.
Steve :?:
I think the best backup/restore application is the Sprite Backup.
I have ab. 65MB in my XDAII memory.
the backup time to 256SD card
- with xbackup: ab. 45-50 minutes
- with Sprite Backup: ab. 15-20 mins
the restore time with Sprite: ab. 6-8 mins
It's restore everything (registry, settings, colours, cleartype...etc)
May the Sprite can changes the ROM version num., but only in the registry, but the XDA is working fine with the new ROM.
! When you backing up by Sprite, don't include the mail boxes, because cannot restore it perfectly, and may you cannot send or recieve SMS,
and need to hard-resetting again!
Try it! Good Luck!
hhmmm it may be me but i havent seen any stand alone radiostack upgrades for xda2's and if you manage to put a xda1 radiostack on your xda2 device you got a brand new hitec doorstop on your hands i would suspect
like with the xda1 i would say that radiostacks should never be changed unless ones cellphone company advice it and are willing to help out should it go horrably wrong
with roms you can change and reflash and such but with radiostacks its not anywhere near as easy to get out of a tigth spot
about backup then i suppose it depend on what you want to backup
permenent save only save contacts and appointments and connections settings and such
kinda like if you just sync with outlook
the different backup programs plus the activesync in outlook are a different matter
if you change your rom then i would not restore a backup from the older rom
since a backup is all changed and programs and settings added to the device since hardreset
since you are talking about a new rom then some settings may not be there anymore and some programs may not be there default and such
restoring a backup from an older rom could result in you having to do a hardreset because of a lockup or just a less stable pocketpc
Hello
it is possible re-install mediaplus without having to re-install the rom?
thanks! Ciao
There is no installer for this as this is built-in to the ROM. Building the cab for this would take some time though. I would suggest you backup your contacts using PPCBckpContacts to save your contacts, tasks, appointments, speed dials, call logs. And use Jeyo SMS backup for your SMS backup.
Ciao!
Maybe you could describe what's wrong first, you may possibly not need a reinstallation...

when I approach the Mediaplus, FM radio, or Wireless Manager, appear the written " skin file are corrupted, Mediaplus exits! ". I would want to avoid to make the hard reset in order re-install all the programs!
Media Center Skin
I don't know if we have the same ROM structure. In my XDA Atom, the Media Center Skin is found in the hidden Extended ROM. If by any chance, you have removed this, OR modified one of the files, it can cause this problem.
I'm not sure if we have the same Media Center Skin, BUT I have attached mine from XDA Atom.
1. Backup first your original Media Center Skin using Activesync
2. Replace your Media Center Skin with the attached files
3. Soft-reset your device
BTW, you can backup your settings, programs, and everything else USING Spb Backup OR Sprite Backup; SO, you don't have to install each program you used AFTER a HARD RESET.
Same thing happen to me.
I want to know what you installed to your system prior the crashed.
I have this problem after installing the broadband TV programs. Did you install any?
BTW Did you restore the files successfully?

If you used sprite backup, then goto www.spritesoftware.com and download sprite explorer. It will let you browse your backup file, like file explorer. But you may not be able to restore your PIM info (calendar, contacts, etc) as the file structure has changed in wm6. Didn't you sync that info with outlook?
Hi, I have downloaded sprint explorer but I don´t know the "names on the differents files" I am an old Palm OS user, so WM are very new for me.
I have some contacts issue with my outlook but I am trying to solve this.
Hans
Reinstalling my apps (including re-entering license keys) and reconfiguring my 4 email accounts after every ROM upgrade is a bit of a PITA.
Spb Backup 2.0 says it has a ROM upgrade mode. Has anyone tried this? Does it avoid or minimize the hassle of reinstalling/reconfiguring after a ROM upgrade?
(I have no connection with Spb other than I have licenses for a few of its other software products)
I'vetried the new version of SpB BAckup, and the 'New Device' function, though not the ROM Update function.
The 'New Device' restore works well- I did a backup from my Ameo, and restored it to my Tinity; SpB correctly interrupted and asked if this was a new device, and suggested using the New Device process.
The process went well, and the Trinity came out of it with my previous Ameo programs all installed, and also the SMS messaeg store.
However, there is a problme SpB BAckup2 seems to have a problem backing up Email data with cooked WM6.1 ROMs. It seems to work OK with genuine HTC ROMs which is bizarre, but at the end of a backup of my Irun ROM Ameo (and also a colleague with a Touch Cruise with cooked WM6.1 ROM) it gives an error at the end of the process saying 'unable to read cemail.vol' which is the email folder. S, as this is not backed up, it obviously didn't restore to the Trinity
NeilM, thanks for the response.
With respect to email, my focus is on account configuration rather than the emails themselves since my accounts are either Exchange Server or IMAP.
How does SPB Backup handle the account configuration? Thanks.
With my cooked WM6.1 ROMs it doesn't handle any part of the email system.
The Email accounts are absent after a restore, calendar seems OK, but Contacts goes into a continuous loop of syncing/verifying/syncing again so looks like a lot of the Pocket Outlook sync is broken after restore.
SpB are adamant this is not a problem on all the official WM6.1 ROMs they have tried, and some users are verifying that, but I've yet to hear from any of my colleagues who have a genuine 6.1 device, and have used SpB BAckup 2.
Just for the record, SpB Backup 1.6 gives me the same errors.
I’ve being using Spb Backup 1.6.3 on all cooked rom from here and never encountered any of the issue. After upgraded to Spb Backup 2, thought that it will safe time when restoring to another rom but no luck. Even tried restoring back to same rom it stop dead at restoring registry. Well, back to 1.6.3 till they fix it.

..if they fix it
My query about the email problems just prompted the response that it was working fine with WM6.1 so the problem is due to my cooked ROM.
Did you try Options and disabling the 'Stop Processes before backup' option? That seems to have worked for some people.
ROM upgrade mode is practically impossible afaik but not sure how SPB is going to work. It didnt work for me either. Actually the files in ROM are sometimes impossible to get copied ir backed up.
For example, I tried Ultra Lite ROM where ozVGA is there and then restored in Irus' Modded Taxist ROM which doesnt have ozVGA but RealVGA. Guess what? All icons vanished!
Regards,
Carty..
Yes done that too and still hath (gold cube stop revolving) during registry restoring.
If it only works for some people, I rather stick to the previous version.
Usually I don’t keep any mail in the device, therefore unable to give any feedback.
Have done a few hard reset and restore. This is what I did.
1. Select customize restore and restore only the reg without any others. This way, the reg will be able to restore fully into the device. Then perform a soft reset once complete.
2. Select customize restore and restore the rest less the reg. This way it will be able to complete the restore. Then perform a soft reset.
That's it. Is kinda stupid in a way as you need to restore it 2 times.
Bear in mind that this works with the AP4.
I just flash the rom to AP5, and it doesn't even work. It just hang in the backup screen. Sigh!!!
I have the Softbank Hermes X01HT. I have upgraded to WM 6 from WM5. After upgrade my contact wont appear when I press contact on the right bottow corner ( after I restore from SPB back up). The sim manager wont help also.
Could you all please let me know how solve this?
Thanks.

dont restore using a full backup as you are just trying to replace wm6 files with wm5 files that spb backup has saved which is probably why you cannot restore the backup.
Unselect the system section of the backup. You will probably need to clear storage first then select only the pim data to restore and see if this works.
If that doesnt work then you should re flash your wm5 rom and then restore your backup with spb, this time using the full restore option. Then use this file to backup your pim data (contacts, appointments and messages, speed dials etc)
http://rapidshare.com/files/85563377/ppcpimbackup_v2.8.rar
you can then reflash your new rom and restore all your pim info, you will have to re install your applications though. But once you have installed everything you can create a new backup with spbbackup
