I'd go with a NMEA 0183 device because you can just open the GPS serial port (defined in Bluetooth settings) and read the NMEA data strings with your own program. The Garmin GPS 10 is a WAAS device that does this. Eruope uses a different standard than WAAS though IIRC so you may want to look around. The key is NMEA output.
Here's a link to NMEA 0183 decoding:

The sentences are simply ascii strings with CRLF seperation that get repeated by the GPS sensor. Couldn't be simpler to work with using C variants....

Thanx for the reply.
I forgot to tell you guys some thing, that I need a GPS for my MDA Vario II

TomTom 5 and XDA compatibility

Can anyone tell me if TOMTOM 5 is compatible with the XDA?
When i say compatible, i dont mean will it install etc cos ive actually managed that no problem. What i mean is, has ANYONE found a GPS reciever that works with the XDA and TOMTOM 5 ? If so what settings did you use?
I have a RIKALINE GPS reciever, and TOMTOM 5. Ive tried what seems for ever to get the god damn thing working but no matter what settings i use, the TOM TOM 5 software refuses to acknowledge that i have a GPS reciever attached or even a signal.
I know the RIKALINE GPS reciever has a signal since ive watched the procedure it goes through in order to obtain it. I know what BAUD rate the GPS reciever needs, but i dont actually know how its connected to the PDA. Ie COM 9:, Serial Cable on COM1:, Serial on USB or Serial Cable on COM2 ?? I have tried them all but to now success. SO does anyone have a TOM TOM 5 installation guide or some information on what i should try next. Anything anyone can give me will be much appriciated. I really dont want to go back to TOM TOM 3 (which i have had working with all the above equipment)
Thanks in Advance
Hi there
Yes the XDA is fully compatible - but there are also conflicts you need to be aware of.
Go to START/SETTINGS/CONNECTIONS - select "BEAM" option - make sure that the box is UNCHECKED - as the infra red beam conflicts with the receiver!
On the TOMTOM program set the GPS receiver to TOMTOM CABLE GPS & away you go!
Let me know if you still can't get it working.
You'll need "Serial Cable on Com 1" Use Other Cable GPS receiver and set the baud rate and it should work once you've disabled the beam

Problem with GPS Reciver on Atom XDA with Tomtom

Hello, i've installed Tomtom 5.21 and the maps and everything is Ok. but i can't make the link between my gps reciver (Royaltek Star III) and the atom XDA. I've installed the partnership in the settings but it doesn't connect with the antenna. I've seen in my other pda (ipaq hx4700 and ipaq hx2790) that there is a bluetooth manager in the connection setting but there is non in the atom XDA. Do you know what's the solution ?
Thanks
create OUTGOING COM port for GPS device
The same problem again
I've tried but i can't choose the port i want and if i choose another one, i can't find it in the gps settings in tomtom.
XDA ATOM to TOM-TOM GPS
ALTHOUGH NOT IDENTICAL, HP iPAQ rw 6828 settings as follow:
[SETTINGS]>[SYSTEM]>[GPS]
This gives you acess to [HARDWARE PORT]/[SOFTWAREPORT]/[GPS AUTO CHOICE]
On the Navigator, Look for Configuration >[NMEA]>Communication Port which should match Hardware port as set above.
BlueTooth COM7 OR 6
USB Cable COM8
SERIAL COM9
Also check the protocol while pairing, BLUTOOTH>[SPP]
Ensure your device is [Discoverable]
Ensure [PASSKEY] identical both sides.
Also under NMEA [SENTENCE] will affect how much data is exchanged each time your atenna poles, GPRMC/GPGGA/GPGLL are the most common.
Hope this helps. 8)
p.s. Checkout www.pocketgps.com and www.ozzieexplorer.com
Both have PDA/GPS forums
Grease Monkey
if you have read first post, you can understand, that the problem with TOMTOM navigator, not with OZI explorer. Then
BlueTooth COM7 OR 6
USB Cable COM8
Click to collapse
tom-tom navigator works only with 8 bluetooth port... not with 6 or 7
No result
Impossible, nothing's working. There's no connection between the antenna and the tomtom.
In Tomtom the avalaible ports are : com 2, com 3, com 4 and com 9
On the atom, bluetooth is in discoverable mode and i've created a partnership with the antenna. I've created an outgoing port on com 8 and for the incoming port in com0 because i can't choose com 2, com, com 4 and com 9.
I really don't know what else i could try
TOM-TOM to BT GPS
KROPOTOV: fAIR ENOUGH - MISSED THE WOOD FOR THE TREES
DRAGSTERBOX: CHECK irDA, SETTINGS /CONNECTIONS/BEAM;disable receive all incoming beams ;which should free serial port.
jus my pennies worth
Grease Monkey
only when you tap "receive incoming baems", com port is using... othertime it's free

Help with Tomtom software & Copilot BT GPS

Hi,
I have tomtom 5 on my Vario and have a BT GPS receiver that came with the copilot software.
I can't get tomtom to recognize the BT receiver. BT search on the device finds the receiver and it works ok with the copilot software. When I try to connect it using the tomtom software, I can't find the right port (COM6) in the tomtom settings, the tomtom website says choose other BT GPS and then it should have 'Bluetooth Port....'. Well it's just not there!!!
Any suggestions wpould be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

ok, I did try searching before I posted but I`ll try again.
thanks for the help!
I had the same problem, you need TomTom Navigator version 5.21 for it to recognise the BT GPS receiver.
Hope this helps.
Tom Tom and CoPilot BT GPS
What name have you paired the GPS as?
(yes - it's important)
Charlie Grillo
Ive got a Vario
ive created a new partnership for the BT-GPS
and for the COM Ports ive set
incoming: COM6
outgoing: COM7
(i only get the option of COM6 & COM7)
i cant seem to select the same COM port for both.... i i try it it says..... the com port could not be created please check your settings and try again
I have tried this solutions and it works at the first chance!
http://www.spv-developers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3452
"try these in no particular order ... for me it works:
-- Change the device name to the default BT GPS name (when you pair the
gps)
-- Edit the registry to ensure you have or add (if not):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TomTom\GPS Engine\
Device = BT GPS
Enabled = 1
Obviously the first item is a KEY and the second (STRING) and third (DWORD) items are VALUES within that key
--Pair the GPS and make sure Com7 is enabled in (BT port setup) but NOT Com6
Cheers and good luck - you'll know it's working when the black and yellow disk is spinning when you go into the GPS config"
bye.

GPS Gateway

Hello,
Is anyone know how to turn the Titan into a GPS gateway?
I found that the screen on the Titan is very small. I happens to have an iPAQ with bigger screen. I want to use the iPAQ as a GPS.
The problem is, I have loaded the GPS program on the iPAQ but was unable to obtain a Com port connection using the BT from the Titan.
Thanks
I believe gpsGate will do the trick for you.
http://gpsgate.com/index.php?id=14
Thanks for the quick reply.
I have downloaded and trying to configure.
I have no luck of getting the Titan to share the GPS over the BT connection.
Anyone know if there is any way?
Thanks

In fact, i tried several time to configure ports unfortunately i fail to connect it, the same procedure i did it with my omnia i900 it is working fine, but HD2 may have different procedure.
I need it badly thus anaxiously awaiting experts advice on this post.
Thanks and regards

No One Understand How to Fix it???
It is uttersurprise that no one has solution for this issue, strange. OK i will try on some other sites.. Bye Experts
I am not up on GPS, but if you are using external GPS instead of HD2 GPS, most modern GPS units use bluetooth, and you could try to pair both up via bluetooth.
