Poor Wi-fi reception - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo ROM Development

After upgrading to the official WM 6, I find myself struggling with poor wi-fi performance. Even when sitting next to the router (Dlink DI-624), it shows only three bars. It often drops the connection. When I open the Wireless settings, the Athena wakes up and refreshes the networks close to me. After that I can reconnect to my own network. The safety setting on the network, is of the WPA kind. Anybody else noticing poorer wi-fi performance with WM 6 ? Any known tweaks that might help?

I had this problem with the first WM6 leaked ROM. Once I updated to the Athena Project Black ROM, the signal strength has gotten much better for me. Not sure if anyone else has had this results or not but it worked for me.

No more constant "H" icon on recent builds?

Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering if anyone has had experience with the H icon not showing constantly on the recent 6.5.1 builds. I still get it when downloading, so HSDPA is still working, but it no longer shows up constantly. Seems a lot like on my old Hermes, which only supported HSDPA (but not HSUPA). It may be that there are some issues at my carrier, but I just wanted to confirm that noone else has seen this before I contact them...
I'm currently using Timolol's 81 build, was on the 71 for the last few weeks, had no issues before that, though I think I had a brief period back at the start of using 71 where it was working fine...

T-Mobile Netherlands?
TPG (Optus) Australia ;-).
Using Radio 1.14.25.05 and 1.14.25.35 (the only two that work reliably with GPS)...
do you have touch pro config or advanced config type tools installed? They can do a registry tweak that can close data connections after X minutes of inactivity. On mine with this option set (to 1 minute) i will get the H icon with signal strength (as opposed to the other H icon on the left which is always there) when a connection occurs and it downloads something, then 1 minute later it goes back to the antenna icon with signal strength (and you can see in HTC COnnection Manager that Data Connection has now been switched off).
Perhaps you have this setting/option set now? In general leaving the data connection on all the time cant be as good for battery etc, especially when the connection is re-established whenever something like activesync or your browser requests it anyway
Thanks for a good suggestion, however, sadly this is not my issue. I am still maintaining connections (on 3g) when not downloading. I did wonder if perhaps MS had tweaked the power management in new builds to drop back connection speed when not in use (Symbian does this, though it drops back all the way to GPRS) but don't think this is the case. Is there any way other than via the icon being constantly H to know HSUPA is working?
In relation to battery and the auto disconnect tweak, I used to use this but sadly it breaks simultaneous voice and data, which makes it a no-go for me (nothing worse than downloading a file and having it bomb out due to an incoming call).
I'm on ATT, and lately the only thing that's happened is H has been showing up more. I use the .25.35 radio and the newest NRG ROM and it works excellent. Hope this helps.
I believe that AT&T have recently increased their coverage significantly for HSDPA in the States...
We've had it over here in Australia over quite a large area of the country for some time now, and it was certainly working well for me before. I've just called the network, but they don't have any information about faults. I'm currently trying to deprovision and reprovision my data service, and hope that will help (I wonder if it's something to do with me at one point using unmatched RILPhone DLL and radio...if that did something funny on the network perhaps they switched something off for my phone. After I tried that, I put it to radio 1.14.25.35 (+matched RIL), which worked fine on H again, but a bit later I changed to 1.14.25.05 (+matched RIL) as I get better battery life with that one...no luck on that, but since then changing back to 1.14.25.35 (+matched RIL) doesn't bring the magic H back either :-( )...
OK, just flashed back to stock to see if that helped, and no luck. So it's not the new ROMs, and it's not anything on my phone. I guess the phone company has either detected me doing screwy things with my radio and switched off my HSUPA for some reason, or more likely, have screwed something up or switched it off in my city for some reason.
All i've got to say about that is BUGGER!
Back to my nice new 23081 w/1.14.25.05 radio then...
Hi caeci11ius,
I'm on virginmobile(Optus) as well. I noticed the same behavior with various new WM 6.5 roms (I'm on latest Exquisite now), but an old EnergyROM build I had which used WM 6.5 21016 build was on H almost all the time.
I think Windows Mobile by default automatically drops down to 3G access from HSDPA to save on battery-life when the device is not utilizing high amount of mobile internet. I noticed I can easily get back on HSDPA (even for just a few seconds) if I do something like browse the internet or even just update the weather and I can also sustain HSDPA with problems.
I think what you are experiencing is a feature. I haven't noticed any problem with the behavior, in fact I think it works better for me, it uses less battery.
Steve

Poor and slow WiFi signal.

I am happy htc hero user for 2 days. Tmobile (uk) branded. My problems started from the very begining. My phone was able to see my router and even connect with full signal strength but connection was inactive - couldnt do anything, browser giving error like no network connection available. I did my search and found kernel might have some issues with wpa psk coding. Tried all the settings on router (even with open network) - nothing helped. Updated to MoDaCo 3.1 rom and radio updated to newest available (downgraded using goldcard to root). Now i got wireless, can connect but its kinda slow (slower than 3g/hsdpa) and signal is very weak. I cant get signal at all downstairs where htc touch hd and nokia e71 both show ab 50% ?! even if i go to bathroom signal strength drops to 30% while htc touch hd and nokia e71 got ab 70%.
Router is netgear dg834g v5 - virgin.
Any suggestions please. I really like the device and this is only but major drawback.
It has been reported a lot that the Hero does not like some wireless routers. Various suggestions include that they won't connet to those using n rather than b or g. they will say they are connected but whenever you try to download you get an error message. I have 3 routers - 2 work fine and 1 (the newest and most expensive) doesn't.
Try a search of these forums for more details.

I agree on this one. The signal is better one some routers. I have a great signal all the time when connected to my Linksys WRT54G (old but good one). At work, where we got Cisco SB Wireless-N Gigabit VPN Routers the signal drops quite often...

HELP! Poor WiFi router signal strength within 1 meter

I have recently upgraded my HTC HD2 to ROM 3.14.531.0 (04666) WWE (1.66... before) and Radio 2.15.50.14 (2.06... before) and my WiFi router signal strength became very poor.
Now the signal is poor even at 0.5 - 1 meter away. Before the upgrade the signal was good even at 10 meters away with 2 walls between the phone and a laptop.
Also tried to set "Best Wi-Fi Performance" on/off and nothing changes.
Also tried to use 3rd party WiFi Router software called WMWifiRouter - same problem.
Ok, then I have downloaded Android MDJ FroYo HD v. 4.1 for HTC HD2 and started HTC Hotspot app. The signal was perfect even at 10-15 meters away.
I think that there's some hidden settings which can help improve WiFi signal in WM because in Android the signal is strong by default.
Can anybody help me with WiFi router signal improvement in WM?
Thanks in advance!
i had the same problem, so i rolled back the radio to V2.12 all is well now.
check out the rome dev threads on how to do this.
Thanks for your advice!
I also thought the problem is in Radio BUT as I've told WiFi Router works perfectly on the same device when I run it on Android OS.
So it looks like the problem is in some WM settings or drivers but not in Radio version.
I'd prefer not to downgrade the Radio but to fix the issue in another way.
Maybe there are better solutions???
upgrade the radio version - same advice as above
Same problem with WiFi
Hello, I have exact same problem with Wifi Signal strength and I have the following software versions: OS: 5.2.29148, Manila 2.5.201914.0, ROM Artemis 44.0 WWE, Radio 2.15.50.14. So everything is latest, I have nothing to upgrade. Problem is with Artemis ROM I can't downgrade the Radio, it says in his thread that a lower version won't be compatible ( I am at 3m from Wifi Router with 1 line of signal, barely connects and when I put the phone down on the desk it loses the link completely, even with Beste Wifi Performance on. I am absolutely sure it's not the router because with my laptop I have full power and datarate. If I turn WiFiRouter (the embedded app) on and leave the phone in exact same position I can go at 2 brick walls away and still have 3/5 signal strenght on my laptop when connected to the phone and internet works ok. So it's not only in Android, I can bet it's some sh*t setting in WM. Please help.
the temporary solution I use is to change power mode in advanced WiFi settings to the left one - "maximum efficiency" or sth like this (sorry, have non-e\nglish ROM, so don't know the proper names)

Best Wifi Performance is called and yes I tried with that on also and same results
It may be that the aerial has disconnected. How is the FM Radio & Bluetooth reception?
i have noted that my brother's tmobile 3.14 rom hd2 has a slightly weak wi-fi antenna in winmo, even with wireless n mode activated (though only at a fairly long distance unlike yours)...but it pulls the signal and works well in android...my leo (india), 3.14 rom works without problems in wino and android at the same distance...... i guess its with the tmobile specific winmo rom/radio?

[Q] Weak Wi-Fi?

Has anyone else had issues with the strength of the wi-fi signal on this phone? When I'm in certain areas of my house, I will have severe lag with browsing, with the People hub, etc. Music and video will stream poorly, with heavy buffering. Basically, I get all the signs of low signal. The problem is, I've never had a problem with other phones I've used, including an HD7, Dell Venue Pro, Nexus S, Nokia N8, etc.
I tested the WiFi signal in these areas, and I get back a consistent signal between 70dbm - 80dbm, so I have a moderate amount of signal to work with. Has anyone else noticed poor WiFi coverage with this phone? Should I get it exchanged?
Same. Something is definitely fishy with the wi-fi on this device. It seems to come and go, and manifests as poor or even no wi-fi capability even when the phone says it is connected to a strong wi-fi signal.
I frequently cannot get a solid Tango video call going between 2 Radars on my home wi-fi network. Pretty frustrating seeing "network problems" and getting a choppy experience when both phones are on wi-fi with full signal strength.
My WiFi is solid with my N router
Today is my first day with the radar and I'm noticing WiFi issues. I think though some of it is related to Zune WiFi sync connecting...
Sent from my HTC Radar 4G using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
For the people connected to 802.11n routers, are your routers in pure N mode?
The Radar I have can connect to my 802.11g router no problem but can't even find my 802.11n. I'm thinking it doesn't have N connectivity...
Just asking.
Mine is BGN

I found out my particular problem is the Windows Phones only work on the 2.4ghz (currently used on my 802.11g router) band and not the 5ghz (my 802.11n router) band.
Now I know.
To the OP, this 2.4ghz band is usually crowded so maybe where you are going in your house, your phone is meeting with interference (land line wireless phone, neighbors wi-fi, etc...).

I don't think it's an interference issue, as every other device I own has no such issues, including 3 other Windows Phones (Dell Venue Pro, HD7 Omnia 7). And despite already using the channel with the least interference, I've tried switching that around as well. To me, there is clearly something not performing correctly in regards to the WiFi radio on this device.

wifi calling issues

So I am on t-mobile, and I also have one of the routers provided to me by t-mobile (I believe it's an Asus) , and I have noticed recently that my wifi calling has been sucking big time. It cuts in and out and says I need to connect to a wifi network, when I am connected. It's like it doesn't notice that there is a wifi connection. Anyone have suggestions as to what might help?
What is your isp bandwidth (down/up)?

100 down 20 up
WiFi calling on Android is hit and miss. I wish it was as stable as Blackberry UMA calling.
I tried the old turn it on and off again on the modem and router and it seems to have helped quite a bit.
Unfortunately, I have this issue for a quite while. Funny thing wifi calling works smoothly on pixel or essential phone!
How old is the router?
The router's WiFi radio maybe showing its age by being intermittent with its throughput's strength and/or signal's strength.
Try with newer router or access point. If there is a coffee shop with very good throughput strength (this is most important) you can do a test with that hotspot.
