I want to upgrade my ROM, but my power button is broken - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 ROM Development

Hi guys,
I hoped any of you can give me a solution to my problem. I want to reflash my ROM. I've done this several times before. My problem is when I want to put my Himalaya into bootloader mode, I can't, because my power button is broken. Is there anyway to put Himalaya into bootloader mode without using the three button combination during boot?
thanks,
undead

not as far as i know

I read something about SoftSPL / SSPL. Is there any version of this program runs on Himalaya? The ones I got is for Hermes and Trinity only.
peace,
undead

I've the same problem... my power button is unusable due to a falling down and I power off my qtek 2020 via software.
so how put it in bootloader mode??

IT IS POSSIBLE!
BUT DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGED OR FRIED PDAs
I know because I myself have done it on an I-mate (Himalaya). It took some trial and error but I am now running WM6. In my case though, I had to completely remove the power button from the device. The previous owner dropped it on its head, and I got it for free, unfortunately most of the top is missing, including the power button.
SO, on to how I did it. I took a paper clip (metal) and put it about 1cm down, slightly to the right of where the power button used to connect to the motherboard. Make sure you have turned your XDA/IMATE on before doing this. You'll find that when you find the right area, your device will turn off, or the screen will go dark (like holding the power button for a second).
If you manage to hold it there for the right period of time, while pressing the other bootloader buttons, then you will be able to enter bootloader.
This took me close to an hour to get just right, but it eventually worked.
Note: I have no idea how exactly this worked, but it did. My IMATE was useless without me updating the rom, so I had no worry about frying it if I did something wrong, that is why I was OK with playing around with its insides. BEWARE that you MAY DO DAMAGE to the device.
Good luck.

Help! Power Button Not Working

Help Guys,
My Power Button is not functioning, when its on i cant turn off the screen by pushing the power button, I have to wait until it shuts down by itself.
and when it shuts down i cant turn it on again by pushing the powr button.
my way to circumvent this is by not enabling the key lock and by pressing any the other keys when its in sleep mode.
I Tried soft reset but it hard resets even if i didnt press the power button.
Should i send it back to HK?
I have the following:
XdaII
ROM ver 1.52.00WWE
Radio Ver 1.05.14
yeah it sounds like there is something wrong with the powerbutton switch
your problem may due to power botton is hang. i used to encounter with that problems. First is due to Battpack when i use shut-down button in Battpack, it's hang. when i soft reset it turn to hard reset. For sure, you need to uninstall any programs that interfere with button mapping and try to use for a period. IF Problems still persist, you should return it to your vendor.
tumtum,
I have the exact problem, but even doing a hard reset and installing only default programs (fresh install) my power button still does not fuction.
What else can i do besides removing sofware?
Help pls.
THanks,
there should be problem with oiwer-button. Like i said earlier, it should be problem with your device. You must return your device to your vendor and check for power-button. somebody in my town has been faced with that problem and he return it to the shop. Shop said it is rpoblem with power-button.
well the thing is..
today i let my friend press the button and whala it worked!
dont know how it happend by now it works fine
thanks for the replies
looks like you'll be spending pretty much time with your friend then
Ditto...
I currently have this problem, my xda II was dropped (by a so-called friend!) it was in a metal case thank god so theres no obvious damage. later that day a program crashed... so i soft reseted it. unfortunately it didnt it HARD RESET i pondered why then tried to turn my device off! with no avail... so b4 it gets repaired (under warranty) I took the black plastic off the back to see if the button was stuck under the casing.... when i peeled it off i looked for the button... it wasnt even there! altho theres no sign of damage wat so ever (no scratches or marks) on the casing, the power button has been clearly wipe
off the circuit board!! if u shake it u can hear it rattling in the depths of the XDA and now its off it doesnt hard reset on a soft reset anymore thank god! im fed up off re-customizing the damn thing and my nearest shop 4 repairs is 8 miles away :-( (brought on the net) so all in all maybe thats the same problem a few of u are experencing Good luck C2k4...
Same problem here ...any HELP
Hi Friends,
I screwed my HTC Hermes power button while trying to fix its earlier problem.
Now to turn the backlight on ..i changed the settings and I can now use any button to bring it out of Sleep mode....
I used a program available on this site to enter bootloader.
However, the problem remains when "power button" is to be pressed.
Any advice on how to get over the "Press power button" to start the ROM flashing....

There is a sticky at the top of this forum for flashing with a broken power button if you have a Himalaya. I am not sure if the same process would work for a Hermes or not, but I would be interested to know if it does. If you power button is still intact though it may not be worth breaking it to find out!

Bricked Help please!

My brother has a stock alltel 6800, brand new. He wanted to upgrade to dcd's ROM like I did but he thought he had to flash the 3.27 radio after the ROM so now he is stuck at the alltel screen. I have tried everything i could to fix it (which is still not that much because im just starting to flash myself) and nothing has worked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
What dcd did you flash?
Hold down the power and camera button and hit the soft reset. Make sure you hold down the power and camera button after you soft reset till boot loader screen comes up. Load org rom.
bricked
DCD 2.3.2
and i did try holding down power+camera and hitting reset but it just restarts and goes to the alltel screen

i did but it just stays on the alltel screen
i know its suppose to bring you to the bootloader but when i tried it just did a soft reset
You have to HOLD them all down UNTIL screen pops up...if you let go to early it will just reset.
well its still not working
i just want to know if there is any way that you can get stuck on this screen with no way to fix it because for all i know one of the buttons might be broken

Pull the battery out, leave it out for 10 seconds, put it back in. Don't press the power button, but instead, hold power+camera and reset to enter the bootloader.
no good
tell me what i should do EXACTLY and what i should see while doing it then

hold power+camera and have your stylus pressing the button on the bottom of the phone...hold until rainbow screen
first of all, should it even be going through the reset routine (vibrates, htc screen, alltel)? because no matter what i do whenever i press (or hold) down the power button it resets.
So you are holding the power button and the camera button and having your stylus holding in the reset button on the bottom of the phone? HOLDING ALL OF THEM...lets say for 10secs?
still not working, just resets.
well one last question then,
i take out the battery, wait a little and put it back in, i hold down the buttons and it turns on, goes to the htc screen, then alltel screen.
is this how it is suppose to look or is it suppose to go straight to the bootloader because im now very certain that it must be a button malfunction
when holding in the buttons like that it should go to a tricolor screen...not reset...it will just reset if not held in long enough though
It is tricky but,,,,,
I have one that my camera button is sort of recessed a little and hard to make work, maybe his is also and may be even broken like he says as it is behaving like he is not holding the camera button. If it is new then I would take it back to them and say "it just did this" and play greeeeeen as grass dumb,,,,that is if you reeeeeeeally can not get it to the bootloader screen which would help.

HTC Touch Dual - Not turning on

Hi Guys,
I have recently successfully flashed my Nike to the NIKI_ROM_MARY_v0.3.3. It was working fine for the past 3 days apart from the odd frozen screen coming out of sleep mode (i think that had to do with some sleep/lock setting)
Then out of the blue I notice it power was off.
- I tried pressing and holding down the power button
- Removing the SIM, micro SD and battery and replacing with another battery
- Connecting to PC
- Charging
All to no avail...
Has anyone have any other suggestions before I return for warranty?
This worked for me; take the battery out leave the sim and memorycard inside the phone, attach the powercord wich is connected to the wallsocket ofcourse and switch the phone on, and then insert the battery........
2nd post cannot delete it?
i'm not sure but i dont think they will repair under warranty as you have changed the software
Same issue
I have the same issue with Mary's v4.0, if i reset or switch off the phone, it just dies, whatever I do it will not switch on.
I managed after 2 days, the keep trying to plug in ac power, with no battery, got a red charge light and then insert the battery, then hold down the power button, finally it booted, now i dare not switch off or soft reset.

if this does not work, then hold the on button and keep trying to insert, then remove and insert the battery until it starts (hopefully).
Just flashed another ROM, so doubt its ROM related, my suggestion is do the above, flash back to your original ROM and SPL, then send it back under warranty, this will be my 4th NIKI under warranty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This worked for me. Seems to be a problem with the HTC Touch Dual. Several people I know have had the phone shut down for no reason. After the above, I did a soft reset.. No problems since... Touch wood!

Hmm, okay I know it's an old thread but I have the same issue but it happened with the original rom, I finally bring the phone back to life unfortenally not with my own sim-card.
For now I'm scared to do a sofreset because I think I lost my phone again just wondering what I can do, maybe someone on this forum have a solution for this.
Regards
I had exactly the same problem... may anyone be more specific?

Hi teorouge, sometimes I got my phone back, what I did was:
1. Remove battery
2. Pressing softreset button about 10 times.
3. Insert battery and keep pressing the powerbutton until the phone reacts.
It's not a fix, the only thing you can do is use the phone but if you do a softreset the problem is back.
Personally I think the powercircuit is broken, I had to buy myself another Niki.
Regards

Thanks for the answer, I gave the Niki back to his owner... it's a corporate phone so he shouldn't personally pay any money (and me neither, that's for sure!) to get it repaired. Thou I hope for him they'll change it to a newer (and feature-rich) device!

Help: gTablet won't turn on any more

I've installed DRH JB 4.1 successfully 2 months ago. It has been running nicely since then. Today I decided to upgrade the ADW launcher EX. It all went fine.
I left the tablet on the table. A few minutes later, I came back to find it remains off. I tried to press power button for a few seconds, w/ or w/o holding + or - down. Nothing happens. Plug in the power, nothing.
I connect it to my PC (did that as a step to install DRH JB 4.1). But nothing happens either.
What can I do now? Is it completely dead?
Thanks
I've cracked open the back and press the reset the button. It boots up but won't respond to touch screen, soft button or hard buttons. I reset it a few times and about to give up. Then I put the back cover half-on (not snapped), it somehow worked. It responds to hard button, soft buttons and touch screen.
I felt lucky but want to try more. So I reboot it. Now, it only respond to the hard buttons, but not soft buttons or touch screen. Feeling I no longer need the reset the button, I snapped the back cover on. Now it goes dead again.
Has anyone seen this before? Any loose end?
Thanks
I just had this happen to my tablet today. Installed CWM 5.0.5 (for BL 1.2), installed the new Paranoid Android ROM played with it for a few minutes, went back to install market, which worked fine, logged in to start downloading apps. Played some angry birds, exited, admired the tab for a few seconds, turned off the screen, and then set it down. plugged in to charger. unlocked screen, made sure apps downloaded, turned off screen again, set down.
10 minutes later, picked it up, tried turning on the screen and all I got was black. will not respond to any button presses or anything I do. I would rather not crack open the case as I just purchased it, but will do so if that is the only thing aside from sending it in for repair.
Hope someone has some advice or help. Did search the forums for other ideas on what to do, but it seems like the only way to make it wake up is the hard reset. Someone please prove me wrong! :silly:

What you are having is a well known SOD that is caused by the Kernel we are using for right now. There are other options besides cracking the case and pressing the internal reset button. You can let the device drain its battery on its own. The best way I know of is to connect something that charges USB to the tablet so that the tablets power will die a lot quicker, MP3 player, Cell Phone or anything that can use a good charging up would be the quickest route. Then after plugging in almost everything and making sure that the battery is fully drained on the G tablet press and hold down the power button just to be safe and discharge what ever is left. Charge the Gtablet fully from red to green and then boot it back up and all will be good. Its a long process to take, but if you don't wish to open it up and drill the hole this is the alternative way of doing so.

Yup. That's most likely it. Loose ends. Check the cables going to the digitizer and the soft buttons.

Is there any diagram/photo showing where to check? Would really appreciate it.
What would be cause that the hard button does not work (power, volume)?
Thanks

For your problem, start reading from this post onwards. Pics are here.
I decided to open gTablet again. This time, things just come back to normal. I checked every wire and connector visible, but can't find anything loose. I am afraid to snap the back cover back so I am leaving it loose and put it back to the case. My plan is to drill a hole on the back cover later to get access to the reset button. But I doubt whether that will really help.
I am checking the pictures against mine. All looks normal. Checked every visible wire and connector. Nothing seems to be loose.

The symptoms point to a hardware problem. A visual inspection might not be enough.
Try pulling all the relevant cables out completely (at both ends), then plugging them back in again.
Then do a "Key Test" in CWM (under "advanced"). Post the key codes along with the keys pressed.
If all the keys don't show up, then get me a dmesg output:
Code:
C:\> [B]adb shell dmesg > dmesg.txt[/B]
You should also check that the cables don't have any breaks in them (flex the cable while doing the Key Test) or have their insulation stripped somewhere. This latter has caused some problems before.
I tried to tighten all the connectors.
All keys passed the test.
Keeping my fingers crossed now.

[Q] Bricked? S3 - possibly tried to flash rom without bootloader?

I'm not tech saavy - I'll try to remember what all I did as best I can.
I rooted my s3 a few months ago based on some detailed instructions found online - no issues. The method used involved clockwork mod or some such.
Fastforward to today - I was following these
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...d-phone-with-rom-manager-full-backup-restore/
instructions to attempt to install liquidsmooth (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2108013) rom. Prior to doing anything, I had backed up everything on titanium backup and using the back up in rom manager. In step 3.1, "flash a recovery image," I didn't think I needed to do this, as I thought it was a part of rom manager.
At any rate, I proceeded onward, and after the phone finished making a back up, immediately after it started to install the new rom, the screen went black (I assume the phone turned off).
I'm currently unable to get it to turn on at all, taking the battery out didn't do anything, and when I plug it into the comp via USB, it doesn't seem to recognize the device.
So I'm quite sure I'm bricked.... But if anyone could provide any advice (or confirm I'm bricked), I'd very much appreciate it. I'm a broke med student on loans, and a new phone is going to hurt the bank account a lot
Thank you in advance
P.S. It's 3:40 am here now.. I need to get to sleep, but I'll check on the thread first thing tomorrow
Sorry to say...
I am sorry to say but if your phone does not turn on at all or does not get in to recovery , It is hard bricked and there is nothing you can do about it.. try getting into download mode. If you can then something can be done. if not then......
To get into download mode simultaneously press the volume down key , home key and power button. Tell me if the download mode screen comes..
When the phone is plugged into the computer via USB and I hold the power button (or any other reset combo of buttons), the computer makes the sound like it realizes I detached the device, but then it makes a triple short 'bum bum bum' when the power comes back on (all of this with no apparent changes from the phone)
If it's helpful, a friend realized I downloaded an international ROM on an ATT phone

the "bum bum bum" noise is the usb device malfunction error so chances are is that its definately hard bricked. there not really anything else you can do at this point.

Thank you both for the replies, my apologies for just noticing them and responding. My phone was definitely hard bricked (no combination of button pushing with or without the USB in would get the screen to change off black).
I sent the phone here
(I tried to do a URL, but my post count prohibits it. If you google search "brickedmyphone", it's the 1st hit)
for JTAG, and I feel the need to give the guy running it a plug. Very prompt replies prior to placing the order, and updates given throughout. The same day he received the phone, it was fixed and mailed back out. Total turnaround time, including shipping, was 5 days (received it today, phone was packaged securely and in perfect /working/ condition). Just need to reactivate the sim tomorrow (activated an old iphone with another sim on my number).
Thank you all again for the help!
