Upgrading a M3100 to WM6 - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

Just got my 1st PPC Phone Device so please bear with me.
Looking to upgrade my SPV M3100 to the official HTC WM6 ROM and from reading here I have gathered that I need to do the following
1. Unlock the phone (SIM and CID) using the V3a unlock program
2. Install Hard SPL V7 bootloader
3 Install official WM6 Rom.
Is there anything else to bear in mind, hope I haven't missed anything
Thanks

Sounds good dude, One thing though - you don't have to unlock the CID/SIM unless you really want to - and unless you specifically need /want to I personally wouldn't perform that step.
Once HardSPL is on, you can flash any image using the modified RUU wrapper.
The only other things to bear in mind are really the obvious - Make sure you've backed up your odds n' sods and that you've read the upgrading FAQs in the wiki (I think you already have!) and have a quick skim through the Upgrade problems FAQs so you don't end up in a panic if something unexpected happens!

As far as I know you can't install any official '.exe' roms on a mobile running Hard SPL boot v7 although don't take my word for it. They also won't install I'm led to believe on any handset apart from the handset it was meant for.
Eg. Dopod Official rom .exe file will only install on the Dopod branded version of your phone.
I may be wrong but to install these official roms I thought an official rom had to be 're-wrapped' somehow.
I did exacty the same as you, and unlocking your phone is better for the fact that the sell on price will be more, plus you can also choose what provider you want to use it with yourself.
I have an Orange SPV M3100, which I bought on ebay to use with my 3 UK sim card, although I also went a step further and installed a non orange HTC branded housing.
BTW I'm running Schaps WM6 v4.31 it's EXCELLENT!

OK, the retail .exes are only programmed to recognise the official SPL versions (ie not hardspl).....thats why we must flash the nbh file using customRUU (which is coded to recognise hardspl).
The CID is responsible for identifying the brand of the device used, that way only HTC ROMs can be flashed onto a HTC CID device and the same for dopod/tomobile etc...
Hardspl essentially reports that the device has SuperCID so that way ANY ROM can be flashed to the device. Basically there isnt much need to CID unlock the device any more, back in the days before HardSPL this is what was normally done but olipro has pretty much tidied that up now
The unlocker is still recommended so you can use any SIM card however, just to SIM unlock it.

I managed to reflash the orange WM5 software no problems despite having HardSPL V7 installed no errors at all

too much information gets confusing

hi all,
i've just bought a t-mobile vario 2
i;ve read the wiki & a few of the posts regarding upgrading
but to be honest it has so much information & sometimes the information is contradictory.. so it gets confusing
i've been using the uni for a year now
my point is
i want 2 upgrade my hermes 2 wm6
my boot screen says
herm300
IPL-1.01
SPL 1.40.Olipro
i can use a different/other sim card than t-mobile
how do i chek if my hermes is CID unlocked
and what radio i'm using & what's my bootloader number??
i try 2 read the splash screen after soft reset but the radio version goes away pretty fast
do i run POF's unlocker v3a? is it safe to run again, even if my phone is cid unlocked?
in order 2 upgrade 2 wm6
do i need to install olipros hard spl 2.10? and then run customruu?
this is what i mean by confusing?
i've upgraded my magician, uni & wizard
however they all had pretty easy/self explanatory directions?
i'm sorry for sounding like a noob, but its new territory....
thanx in advance
Is there a specific reason you want to CID the device? T-Mobile's data plan s pretty great so I have never seen the need to use another sim in my vario. You dont need to CID unlock to upgrade the rom.
As long as you have installed Olipro's spl to protect against bricking your phone it should be fairly safe to install a wm6 rom. If not, definitely install the current version of hard spl.
Once you have installed SPL, you then run the RUU.exe file that usually comes with the rom. Tha majority will have a tick box on the first page that says auto detect, which will check which version of spl you have installed and then run itself accordingly. It is best to have the current hardspl installed though.
Most of them dont touch your extended rom and only replace the OS rom contents. T-Mob's wm5 extended rom customizations wont work with wm6 anyway so you will need to go looking here for a cab file called (I Believe) tmobileukfixed.cab.
You will also need to look for newer versions of your pocket pc software as some older ones dont play nice with WM6.
Good luck, and if in doubt, read MrVanx's upgrade guide here: http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/

Fall Back to Original Rom (Tmobile)

Hi @ all...
so time has come i will return my phone to tmobile, because of the heavy problems with the slide-out-keyboard. i tried to solve my keyboard-problems with the orignal shipped rom, but i realised that it doesn't matter which rom i flash to my phone, the problem seems to be of hardware-ish nature...
so now my problem is: i want to fall back to the original state...
i want original IPL,SPL,OS,Radio, Boot, etc etc...
i tried to flash the "Original Shipped TMOB101" from the wiki, it flashed nice with CustomRUU...the original flash utility couldn't find my phone.
so i unpacked the exe and flashed the nbh with CustomRUU... flashed nicely, but didn't boot... first problem: whitescreen, second: hang on windows mobile screen, third: NOGSM... tried to flash newer GSM 1.43. this worked nice then, but isn't original... any idea how to get the 1.05.02 radio running? tried to reflash the complete tmobile nbh again, same result.
tried to flash with Vista, and also with XP, nothing changed...
next problem i assume is: how to downgrade SPL? and how to detect Bootversion? could it be, that i flashed some newer boot in between, because, i have always flashed newest radio roms, could it be that i flashed a boot together with a certain radio?
hope someone can help me... my device is also simunlocked, i hope they do not recognize it at tmobile. but i want to get everything else into original state before returning.
greetings
garfield
There is now an official wm6 update which you can use
it's available here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337163
If you're wondering if it's properly been released, it's also available on the t-mobile business site.
Shaks
shaks1979,
I have just been to the tmobile business site and I cannot find the WM6 update - please can you post a link to it?
many thanks,
Paul
the german t-mobile site dies not offer to download the upgrade yet.
flashed the new WM6 from t-mobile yesterday, and it works really great, but my keyboard isn't functional anyway...
has anyone an idea how to enable the flash-utility to overwrite the SPl and IPL? because my tri-color-screen reads IPL-1.01 and SPL-2.10-Olipro and this means, both of them have not been updated... any way to overwrite these rom-sections with the now tmobile ones?
so when finished upgrading (IPL and SPL have to be upgraded before i can go on) i will return my phone to a tcom store, they have to bother with my keyboard issue... my phone isn't a half year old by now... keyboard issues like this shouldn't be there i assume
greetings
and thanks for the new wm6 links.
garfield
Extract the nbh file from the T-Mobile ROM and flash it with CustomRUU. This will overwrite IPL / SPL
[...see reason]
which settings do i have to use with CustomRUU? do i have to select same radio-buttons as always? (SPL 2.10-Olipro/Is it HardSPL) ?
okay, so i found the option via try and error i had to use use: Force UNSAFE SSPL.
i have another question now:
as far as i know, t-mobile DE has not released this ROM to its customers via their website, so i have to flash my phone back to WM5 original rom, and bootloaders, because this new tmobile rom didn't make my problems with the keyboard go away.
my local store told me that they will send the device back to tmobile, and tmobile then will repair or exchange the device.
so if they send it back to tmobile, i uess i have to put it into original state, haven't i? cause flashing the rom causes loss of warranty, doesn't it? i hope they will not recognize, that i sim-unlocked it (did not touch the CID).
problem occurring: i extracted the nbh from the original shipped-archive and flashed it with CustomRUU but when booting NO GSM shows up, and windows stops booting during first bootsplash... sometime during second bootsplash... any idea? might it be that it was like this, because of olipros 2.10 SPL?
greetings

I wonder why you SIM unlocked your device?
The German Hermes never was SIM locked, so, there was no need to unlock it!
You will either have to Soft-CID-unlock or Hard-CID-unlock your device if you want to flash it otherwise it won't work!
What settings are you talking about? You simply copy the nbh file to the CustomRUU folder and run the UPDATE UTILITY in there! There are no settings, it works the same way as the utilities from shipped ROMs - simply follow the instructions on screen and do not plug out nor touch the device until the job is done!
So actually it is not a hermes, it is a MDA Vario 2 from tmobile, isn't it?
partly you're right, the device wasn't sim-locked, but net-locked, wich means i cannot use my second sim card from vodafone with it. so i had to unlock it.
(i tried without unlocking, the phone asked me for a certain code and no, it was not the pin-code from the vodafone-sim )
if you launch CustomRUU you are asked for the version of your SPL, at least this is what happens when i start it. if you cannot imagine what i am talking about, i will make a screenshot, for better understandings.
I had Hard-SPL installed, this is a form of SOFT-CID-unlocking?
with having Hard-SPL installed i could not boot the original shipped german TMOB101-rom from the wiki...
can i flash the old ipl/spl/radio/os without worries?
greetings
garfield
Within the CustomRUU folder you should see a file called ROMUpgradeUt.exe - this never ever asks for SPL, it is nothing but a modified FLASHING UTILITY.
i only have ruuwrapper.exe
i used this customruu v5.2 from olipro's thread
what customruu are you talking about? actually i never saw a file named ROMUpgradeUt.exe
where to find?
thanks for your help.
greetings
garfield
EDIT:
i have just found this:
NOTE: If your radio version is currently HIGHER than 1.27.00.00 then it is very likely the radio bootloader is version 0108, this WILL NOT allow the radio to be downgraded to a radio containing BL 0106 and will result in a "NO GSM" error. As with other downgrade guides this is NOT intended as a guide for claiming the warranty of the device having flashed components which are not authorised by the manufacturer or carrier.

Need some help before i brick my Hermes

Hi,
i was trying to upgrade my Hermes to WM6 and i was doing it according to mrvnx guide. First i tried the WM6 guide. Ipl was 1.01 and SPL was 1.11. Evrything went fine up until the part where the actual ROM was supposed to be flashed. The update pocess started, and i went for a smoke somewhere at 2%. When i came back, there was a message saying image file was corrupted, and Hermes was up and running. So, my first instinct was that i missunderstood something and that that guide was for phones already having WM6, so i decided to do the WM5 guide. I flashed the SPL, skipped the radio upgrade (cause i didn't know whether to use that version or the later one) and skipped to the next page. And, low and behold, there it says "Firstly download the WM5 ROM you wish to upgrade to"
And now i'm stuck and i don't know what to do. Should i get some WM5 ROM and first upgrade to it and then to WM6? Or should i go straight for WM6 ROM? If so, do i just follow the WM5 guide only using WM6 ROM or do i just flash it by the WM6 guide?
The phone still works with no problems at all. The desired WM6 ROM is Pays Full. Is it really corupted (got it from the "download full" link in the first post here), or was it my mistake?
Sim unlock and cid unlock your device then - http://pof.eslack.org/hermes-unlocker/
Download your carriers Rom (wm5 or wm6 - o2,orange,at&t etc)
then flash that.
then HARDSPL your device - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722
then use modified updater to flash your device with the wm6/6.1 rom of your choice.. works fine for me.
2.10 bootloader with the "is it hardspl" checked and wa'la its updated
hope this helps.
Thanx for the answer. I doubt i'll find my carrier's rom, since i'm from Croatia, and i think it hasn't been posted here, and certainly hasn't been posted on my provider's site. I did make a backup before upgrading, and i have the three raw files made with itsutils. Will this do?
Also, could you please explain why i need to sim/cid unlock it? The device itself is not branded at all, i believe it's only locked to the provider's sim, and that's all. Does sim /cid unlocking cover that or is it about something else?
Thanx!
Sim unlocking = you can use other sims
CID unlocking = you can use other roms (maybe why your update is crashing)
HARDSPL = One less chance of bricking your device
as your device is still currently up and running im guessing you can do it all via that rom.
Ok, just so i don't missunderstand you, can i do what you suggested, but without flashing the carrier's rom?
you can, however you may encounter problems with wm6.1 in the future (hard resets etc)
OK to clear this thread up....
...make sure you have flashed HardSPL before continuing then...
...redownload the ROM it sounds like it has become corrupted whilst being downloaded so make sure you unzip the whole thing to a folder first then try it.
did everything like kingsizeriz told me, except i did it on the existing rom. uploaded the same rom i tried before and it worked like a charm. me and mates have been fiddling with it the whole evening and noticed no problems so far. Thanx for the help, much appreciated
Btw, one last question, is NK.EXE supposed to be 0 bytes?

Orange SPV M3100 flash to WM6 (or 6.1), help needed

I have just downloaded and run this file with my phone attached to my computer and Activesync 4.5 running etc ->
RUU_Hermes_DOPODASIA_WWE_3.54.707.3_6275_1.47.00.10_108_Ship.exe
It went ok to the point where it said Invalid Operator ID or something similar, in other words, silly old Orange have stopped the upgrade from going through somehow. What are my options now? I'm guessing its still possible to upgrade (although i don't know how, as i'm very novice at upgrading phones!)
please let me know what i can do now.
hi i have a a orange spv m3100 and recently put on a wm6 rom upgrade found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320829
i did put hard spl v7 on before i upgraded to this. it all worked fine and i was not stopped by orange as it lets you put roms on that are not the same CID as your device
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722
hard spl v7 is on this page and once that is on your hermes the rom should go on easily
ok will look into that, thank you.
a friend at work suggested using the Black firmware, would that be advisable? he has had success with it.

The reason you get an invalid vendor ID is because you havent put HardSPL on, and your CID doesnt match that of a dopod device (see the filename). CID is something you NEED to know about before flashing stuff dude, the more reading you do the better you will understand the device and the flash process. These devices are shipped with a CID which restricts them to use only ROMs intended for them....so your device will only flash Orange ROMs in its current state.
ok i have got as far as flashing the Pro Black 3.0.1 rom, it went well, only thing was, the phone was still locked after the upgrade, so i just ran the v3a unlocker on it, and it has now been unlocked.
my question now is why did it change the radio? what radio is best for the SPV M3100?
I should mention i am in the UK.
What was the radio before? Check what your friend has as this may be the best. Don't go for the latest update and Make sure you use the sd card method to flash (less things go wrong as it is dependant on the sd card inserted in your phone and your battery being charged, NOT on a flaky usb cable and pc that can be pulled out or reset/turned off). This is the riskiest part to flash making almost 100% permanent bricks if there is a problem.
My advice, use the one that your friend is using (if he knows anything about flashing he probably is a ppc flashing junkie like just about everyone else here) and use the sd card method.
As a footnote, radio roms are carrier specific - your carrier decides what is the best radio rom and using the wrong one means call dropouts and/or severe battery drainage or you.
Cheers...

very foolishly, before flashing the phone with the unlocker, i didnt check the radio ROM. (though i have a feeling it was around the 1.38-1.48 mark)
i'm on Vodafone though. Isn't there one standard radio (to rule them all) that most of us in the UK can get away with?
edit: im looking at the HTC Official Europe WM6 rom that comes with the built-in 1.48 radio, it would make sense that they know what the best radio is, since they make the phones...

after much reading of the threads on this forum, its starting to make sense.
one thing i still am not sure about is SSPL.
Should booting into the SSPL bootloader allow me to flash *any* rom, cos thats what this thread is claiming -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293651
but when i just now tried starting the SSPL-HERM.exe and then running the HTC WM6 firmware that i found through a bit of guesswork, it still got to the same Invalid Vender (sic) ID part!
Am i using the SSPL-HERM file the right way?
about the radio i am using vodafone as i unlocked my spv i have 1.47.30.10 found on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=326995
this is working well for me at the moment.
as for your question about flashing the roms i use the hard spl v7 which i flashed the offical htc rom with i then used this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665
to unlock my phone and super cid it i have since flashed black satin and schap's wm6 pro 4.31 and both went on fine
gd luck ask if ur not sure about any of this
Flash Hard SPL back on as it has been downgraded to 1.10 olipro instead of 2.10 olipro. This is for safeties sake.
You don't need to use sspl to flash os's from the sd card IF you have SPL 2.10 olipro installed. Just rename the .nbh file (on sd card) to hermimg.nbh and reboot into bootloader with sd card inserted. Too easy..
Cheers...

Will Upgrading the ROM to the HTC Home on this site keep my SPV M3100 unlocked?

I have an unlocked SPV M3100 which is still running the windows 5 rom. I want to update it to the HTC Home ROM (by Scotty93) that is on this site but i want to know a few things first:
Do i have to update the rom to a newer version before i can use the HTC Home one?
I have a 2 gb MicroSD card ready to use - but could somebody outline the processes i would need to to in what particular order
Will my phone remain unlocked after the update?
Many Thanks,
David
Hi,
An unlocked phone means you can use any SIM inside the phone. It won't get locked by flashing.
But you need to CID unlock the phone before you can flash any cooked ROMs such as what you mentioned (that's why HardSPL is important because it makes the phone SuperCID so the device won't brick easily by flashing). Before you want to start any flashing activity, please read the wiki and how to HardSPL your phone.
All the best
