too much information gets confusing - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

hi all,
i've just bought a t-mobile vario 2
i;ve read the wiki & a few of the posts regarding upgrading
but to be honest it has so much information & sometimes the information is contradictory.. so it gets confusing
i've been using the uni for a year now
my point is
i want 2 upgrade my hermes 2 wm6
my boot screen says
herm300
IPL-1.01
SPL 1.40.Olipro
i can use a different/other sim card than t-mobile
how do i chek if my hermes is CID unlocked
and what radio i'm using & what's my bootloader number??
i try 2 read the splash screen after soft reset but the radio version goes away pretty fast
do i run POF's unlocker v3a? is it safe to run again, even if my phone is cid unlocked?
in order 2 upgrade 2 wm6
do i need to install olipros hard spl 2.10? and then run customruu?
this is what i mean by confusing?
i've upgraded my magician, uni & wizard
however they all had pretty easy/self explanatory directions?
i'm sorry for sounding like a noob, but its new territory....
thanx in advance

Is there a specific reason you want to CID the device? T-Mobile's data plan s pretty great so I have never seen the need to use another sim in my vario. You dont need to CID unlock to upgrade the rom.
As long as you have installed Olipro's spl to protect against bricking your phone it should be fairly safe to install a wm6 rom. If not, definitely install the current version of hard spl.
Once you have installed SPL, you then run the RUU.exe file that usually comes with the rom. Tha majority will have a tick box on the first page that says auto detect, which will check which version of spl you have installed and then run itself accordingly. It is best to have the current hardspl installed though.
Most of them dont touch your extended rom and only replace the OS rom contents. T-Mob's wm5 extended rom customizations wont work with wm6 anyway so you will need to go looking here for a cab file called (I Believe) tmobileukfixed.cab.
You will also need to look for newer versions of your pocket pc software as some older ones dont play nice with WM6.
Good luck, and if in doubt, read MrVanx's upgrade guide here: http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/

FUNDAMENTAL requirement before trying a WM6 upgrade

I have been reading all across the forums how to CID unlock, upgrade etc. However, I am not able to find the ways to do seeminly essential homework before trying to upgrade. These for me are:-
* Finding a way to completely backup all the stuff from original tytn. Like ROM, SPL, IPL, Radio, CIDlock etc. I feel that this is important as if ever I feel like going to the tried old one I should be able to and to preserve the warranty also. Also, the method to roll back if needed. This should be covering re CID locking the phone etc.
It makes sense to create a way to bring the phone to its completlely original shape if we need it
Thanks

You do not need to back up your spl, ipl, etc. because if you need to roll back you can just reflash them on, and they can be found around here and in the wiki.
You cannot un-CIDunlock, but if you use hardspl v7 it will "trick" your phone into thinking it is (when in reality it isnt) so that you do not have to actually unlock it. If you ever need to send it in you can just flash the old spl over it.

So you mean that hardspl doesnt CID unlock it? But isnt there really a way to extract the original components and then put them back again ?
thanks

HardSPL does not CID unlock. pof's Free Unlocker (a sticky thread) does the SIM and CID unlocking. HardSPL is a new set of bootloaders allowing upgrade utilities to access and read/write to the phone. The most important aspect of this (besides bypassing the CID check) is the security - it has some overwrite protection built in to prevent you from accidentally corrupting the bootloader area, rendering your phone a brick. HardSPL is a safety measure.
If you check THE WIKI here on xda for the Hermes, you will find some stuff on extracting. It is most probable that it will be FAR easier to find new versions of everything you have, rather than trying to back up and restore. The wiki contains MANY shipped ROMs to allow you to restore back to basically the original condition. LOOK HERE for MW5 shipped ROMs and LOOK HERE for WM6 shipped ROMs.

what about the radio upgrade
the htc108 thing
its confusing
on pof's sticky it says to downgrade the radio if u have the htc 108..
but on the radio upgrade sticky, it says u can upgrade any phone[hermes] using custom ruu..

Thanks a lot for the reply, I appreciate the time you spent in expaining this to me and providing these links.
I was wondering if HARDSPL is like shelltool where it will only allow upgrade or flashing of OS part. So, once I use the HARDSPL and flash say HTC official WM6 release or Dopod WM6, will I be ableto to get the bundled radio and SPL and IPL upgrades from these ROMS? and if yes then will HARDSPL get replaced by these SPLs and IPLs built into the ROMS? One more thing, will an upgrade like that can brick the phone as if I rum the official ROM it will try to upgrade the SPL and IPL (I am not sure).
What is the preferred way of upgrading ? unlocking CID by the tool or HARDSPL ?
I have read somewhere that lockwiz tool used for Wizard can save CID also and some tool and put it back also but I dont know how and if the same tool can do it for hermes?

Alber

Most cooked roms are os only, but a few have a radio, etc. included. If its os only, flashing will only change the os. You can separately flash radio.
Hardspl is the best because its reversible. Well thats not the best word to describe it....id say because its not permanent. But u know what i mean

Mcorrie1121 is right. I will add a couple of things.
1. HardSPL is not *necessary* for flashing anything, it only makes it safer and allows you to flash ROMs with CIDs that do not match your device without CID unlocking. Your ROM is basically a few parts - OS, Radio, IPL, SPL, ExtROM, MainSplash and SubSplash. The HardSPL will replace the SPL only. Most non-carrier ROM releases are OS only. Most carrier ROMs (as you pointed out) have ALL of these things. As Mcorrie1121 pointed out, you can easily find a radio - check the wiki, search, etc.
2. Once you have upgraded to a cooked ROM (and HardSPL), you will still be able to upgrade to a Shipped Official ROM. You may need to "unpack" it and use the CustomRUU instead of the shipped updater. That is OK though.
3. HardSPL will not allow overwriting of the IPL/SPL except by another HardSPL (see mrvanx.org downgrade guides). You will not have a problem. It will keep your bootloader zone safe.
4. I don't think there is a preferred way. Some people unlock CID, others do not. There is no reason to *not* unlock it, unless you plan to send it back - and I have never heard of someone getting service rejected for this reason. Wring ROM, yes. CID unlocked, no. That said, maybe try without CID unlocking first and then if you find you need to do it for some reason, then do it. You really do not have to do it, since the Custom Updater bypasses the CID check anyway.
5. Regarding the 0108 Radio BL issue, don't worry much about that - it is an old problem. Just don't go below whatever version you have now.

Dear, please help me with one thing-I am terribly confused about the procedure to upgrade my JASJAM to WM6. I understand that one way is to CIS unlock it and install on it the official and dopod releases of WM6. I wanted to know how can I do the same using the HARDspl. I know that I can install the HARDSPL but after that what ??? Can I then run the offcial RUU from HTC or Dopod or I am supposed to do it some other way as I am afraid that it may contain the SPL and IPL and can break by phone OR I have to use some customRUU (I dont know) OR I am supposed to extract the OS from these official releases (I dont know how) OR ..
Can you please clear these confusion??
I have:-
* I-Mate JASJAM, CID locked i suppose as when I run official HTC or dopod it says this update utility is not for this
*I really wanted to save my devices complete state and a way to revert it to the way it was like SPL, IPL, OS, Radio, CID lock etc.
PLS pls help

There are upgrade guides there and guides to put it back the way it was (OS, Radio, IPL, SPL, MainSplash and SubSplash) - it is all covered.
The upgrade guides will get you through the upgrade process. The only thing you need to do after that to use an official upgrade is to unrar (using winrar or something) the executable file and take the nbh and us it with the CustomRUU, which can be found HERE .

Upgrading a M3100 to WM6

Just got my 1st PPC Phone Device so please bear with me.
Looking to upgrade my SPV M3100 to the official HTC WM6 ROM and from reading here I have gathered that I need to do the following
1. Unlock the phone (SIM and CID) using the V3a unlock program
2. Install Hard SPL V7 bootloader
3 Install official WM6 Rom.
Is there anything else to bear in mind, hope I haven't missed anything
Thanks

Sounds good dude, One thing though - you don't have to unlock the CID/SIM unless you really want to - and unless you specifically need /want to I personally wouldn't perform that step.
Once HardSPL is on, you can flash any image using the modified RUU wrapper.
The only other things to bear in mind are really the obvious - Make sure you've backed up your odds n' sods and that you've read the upgrading FAQs in the wiki (I think you already have!) and have a quick skim through the Upgrade problems FAQs so you don't end up in a panic if something unexpected happens!
As far as I know you can't install any official '.exe' roms on a mobile running Hard SPL boot v7 although don't take my word for it. They also won't install I'm led to believe on any handset apart from the handset it was meant for.
Eg. Dopod Official rom .exe file will only install on the Dopod branded version of your phone.
I may be wrong but to install these official roms I thought an official rom had to be 're-wrapped' somehow.
I did exacty the same as you, and unlocking your phone is better for the fact that the sell on price will be more, plus you can also choose what provider you want to use it with yourself.
I have an Orange SPV M3100, which I bought on ebay to use with my 3 UK sim card, although I also went a step further and installed a non orange HTC branded housing.
BTW I'm running Schaps WM6 v4.31 it's EXCELLENT!

OK, the retail .exes are only programmed to recognise the official SPL versions (ie not hardspl).....thats why we must flash the nbh file using customRUU (which is coded to recognise hardspl).
The CID is responsible for identifying the brand of the device used, that way only HTC ROMs can be flashed onto a HTC CID device and the same for dopod/tomobile etc...
Hardspl essentially reports that the device has SuperCID so that way ANY ROM can be flashed to the device. Basically there isnt much need to CID unlock the device any more, back in the days before HardSPL this is what was normally done but olipro has pretty much tidied that up now
The unlocker is still recommended so you can use any SIM card however, just to SIM unlock it.
I managed to reflash the orange WM5 software no problems despite having HardSPL V7 installed no errors at all

Need some help before i brick my Hermes

Hi,
i was trying to upgrade my Hermes to WM6 and i was doing it according to mrvnx guide. First i tried the WM6 guide. Ipl was 1.01 and SPL was 1.11. Evrything went fine up until the part where the actual ROM was supposed to be flashed. The update pocess started, and i went for a smoke somewhere at 2%. When i came back, there was a message saying image file was corrupted, and Hermes was up and running. So, my first instinct was that i missunderstood something and that that guide was for phones already having WM6, so i decided to do the WM5 guide. I flashed the SPL, skipped the radio upgrade (cause i didn't know whether to use that version or the later one) and skipped to the next page. And, low and behold, there it says "Firstly download the WM5 ROM you wish to upgrade to"
And now i'm stuck and i don't know what to do. Should i get some WM5 ROM and first upgrade to it and then to WM6? Or should i go straight for WM6 ROM? If so, do i just follow the WM5 guide only using WM6 ROM or do i just flash it by the WM6 guide?
The phone still works with no problems at all. The desired WM6 ROM is Pays Full. Is it really corupted (got it from the "download full" link in the first post here), or was it my mistake?
Sim unlock and cid unlock your device then - http://pof.eslack.org/hermes-unlocker/
Download your carriers Rom (wm5 or wm6 - o2,orange,at&t etc)
then flash that.
then HARDSPL your device - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722
then use modified updater to flash your device with the wm6/6.1 rom of your choice.. works fine for me.
2.10 bootloader with the "is it hardspl" checked and wa'la its updated
hope this helps.
Thanx for the answer. I doubt i'll find my carrier's rom, since i'm from Croatia, and i think it hasn't been posted here, and certainly hasn't been posted on my provider's site. I did make a backup before upgrading, and i have the three raw files made with itsutils. Will this do?
Also, could you please explain why i need to sim/cid unlock it? The device itself is not branded at all, i believe it's only locked to the provider's sim, and that's all. Does sim /cid unlocking cover that or is it about something else?
Thanx!
Sim unlocking = you can use other sims
CID unlocking = you can use other roms (maybe why your update is crashing)
HARDSPL = One less chance of bricking your device
as your device is still currently up and running im guessing you can do it all via that rom.
Ok, just so i don't missunderstand you, can i do what you suggested, but without flashing the carrier's rom?
you can, however you may encounter problems with wm6.1 in the future (hard resets etc)
OK to clear this thread up....
...make sure you have flashed HardSPL before continuing then...
...redownload the ROM it sounds like it has become corrupted whilst being downloaded so make sure you unzip the whole thing to a folder first then try it.
did everything like kingsizeriz told me, except i did it on the existing rom. uploaded the same rom i tried before and it worked like a charm. me and mates have been fiddling with it the whole evening and noticed no problems so far. Thanx for the help, much appreciated
Btw, one last question, is NK.EXE supposed to be 0 bytes?

vodafone v1605

Hi to everybody.
I have an Hermes 200 Vodaphone VPA compact 2 v1605.
I wanna put into this pda the latest Schap's 4.31 ROM.
I have done the mrVanx procedure and I have successfully installed the 2.10 Hard-SPL-V7.
Now I wiil explain my two problems:
- I don't know if my pda is CID unlocked or not... With the HardSpl flashed on my pda, should I be scared about that or not?
I think HardSPL turn my pda into supercid... right?
- If ROM flashing procedure will be stopped by a pc crash, I can unbrick my pda easily? In wich way?
Should I use the mrVanx guide to flash pda or I follow microsd guide?
Many thanks
I should have read the wiki. Either way, and since nobody helped me when i needed and i had to find it all by myself, i know how frustrating it might be. So ill give u hand.
First go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665
Download that tool that will superCID ur phone and Hard SPL it automatically. Pay attention to every step.
After that, and since the hard spl installed by that tool is rather old, go here:
http://www.mrvanx.org/thg/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=16&Itemid=26
In the middle of that tuturial u will find the link to the mostly used version of hard spl and how to update ur rom to one of the cooked ones around here.
Soz if my english aint perfect but im not english nor american though.^^
Thanx for reply. But i think you haven't understand my question.
I think my pda is already SuperCID because i have installed the 2.10 HardSPL.
Somewhere in this forum or in the wiki i found that if I flash my pda with 2.10 HardSPL I don't have to use unlocker because this version allow SUPERCID mode.
Am I wrong???
My pda is also already sim unlocked. Infact it is Vodofane (english or german) but i can use TIM italian sim card without problems.
Now my question is:
If I write the schap's ROM with SD procedure, should I scared about RADIO ROM damage?
I found that schap's ROM doesn't modify RADIO, right?
..so i think that SD procedure is the safer way.
Thanks
Not really, most if not all cooked roms DON'T have the radio rom cooked in as there is no perfect rom for everyone, its carrier compliant. Just because a new radio rom comes out doesn't mean its going to improve your reception or battery life, sometimes it causes problems, hence the chefs give you the option of what radio to use.
Now, Hard SPL is only a safety net, things can still go wrong but if they do there is a load of information on how to fix it, ESPECIALLY if you've installed Hard SPL. Make sure its version 7 so the spl reads as 2.10 olipro when you enter bootloader (power button, ok button above flywheel and reset with stylus, hold in until you get to tricolour screen). Just soft reset with stylus to get out.
Personally, as you have Hard SPL, I'd use the sd card method to flash your os. Its on the forum MANY times over. A quick search should find it. VERY EASY and, I believe, safer than using the pc. Just make sure the battery is charged.
Hope this helps....
Cheers....

- If ROM flashing procedure will be stopped by a pc crash, I can unbrick my pda easily? In wich way?
Should I use the mrVanx guide to flash pda or I follow microsd guide?
Many thanks

The guide on MrVanx page does not have the images. Is thare a copy of it somewhere with the full ilustrations?
Thanks.
Yes i have HardSPL v7 2.10 installed on my pda.
This mean I'm in supercid mode and I'm able to flash any rom. right?
I haven't to use the sim cid unlcker, right?
I haven't understand this:
At the moment I don't want to change my RADIO ROM.
Latest schap's ROM doesn't modify RADIO so my radio ROM remain the same. Is this true?
If I flash schap's ROM should I to flash a RADIO ROM that works with schap's one? Or does my RADIO continue to work?

I have a brand new hermes since last week and i passed a lot of blocking and stucking in the bootloader. However, the first ROM i installed was Schaps one and on that time i didn't even have my phone Hard SPL'ed or SuperCID'ed! I used that tool of SSPL. But if u say ur phone is already Hard SPL you will have no problems installing the schaps rom. In addition, the RADIO ROM will not be modified with his rom. I must say that besides his ROM was installed perfectly, there are some other cooked ROMs that require your phone to be SuperCID'ed.
Thanks for your reply.

Is this a good thing or bad one?
I mean: my pda now has no problem about RADIO and I don't want to change nothing about RADIO ROM.
If i flash schap's ROM the pda continue to work well with my RADIO? or the schap's ROM work well with some RADIO ROM an bad with other.
Thanks
You won't change your radio rom and yes it will still work with ANY rom you use (as long as its for the Hermes).
ok!!!
Now it's time to flash.
Thanks a lot!!
good flash^^

In your signature i found that you use a CRC's ROM.
Also crc's rom doesn't modify RADIO and can work well on my pda?

It works good on mine. And no, it doesnt modify your ROM.
As stated before, the chefs tend to let YOU decide what radio to use... There is no perfect radio rom and location/carrier seems to determine what is the best radio for you.
Cheers...
I put the rom in microsd renamed in HERMIMG.nbh
I start the bootloader withe ok + power + stylus but the flash procedure doesn't start. I have only the bootloader screen with 4 rows:
RED HERM200
IPL-1.04
HERM200
SPL-2.10 OLIPRO
GREEN
BLUE
WHITE SERIAL
what's the matter?
p.s.
I'm using a 2g sandisk
with 1gb microsd sandisk it works!!
Flash successfull!!
Thanks to everybody
sfrangebob, it should work with a 2gb too, It needs to formatted fat32 though.
Congrats and welcome to the wide world of Phone upgrading...
DISCLAIMER - Phone flashing can be addictive....
I know.. I formatted it many times but the flashing operation doesn't start.
With 1 gb it starts on the first attempt.
ahah flash addciction

Orange SPV M3100 flash to WM6 (or 6.1), help needed

I have just downloaded and run this file with my phone attached to my computer and Activesync 4.5 running etc ->
RUU_Hermes_DOPODASIA_WWE_3.54.707.3_6275_1.47.00.10_108_Ship.exe
It went ok to the point where it said Invalid Operator ID or something similar, in other words, silly old Orange have stopped the upgrade from going through somehow. What are my options now? I'm guessing its still possible to upgrade (although i don't know how, as i'm very novice at upgrading phones!)
please let me know what i can do now.
hi i have a a orange spv m3100 and recently put on a wm6 rom upgrade found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320829
i did put hard spl v7 on before i upgraded to this. it all worked fine and i was not stopped by orange as it lets you put roms on that are not the same CID as your device
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722
hard spl v7 is on this page and once that is on your hermes the rom should go on easily
ok will look into that, thank you.
a friend at work suggested using the Black firmware, would that be advisable? he has had success with it.

The reason you get an invalid vendor ID is because you havent put HardSPL on, and your CID doesnt match that of a dopod device (see the filename). CID is something you NEED to know about before flashing stuff dude, the more reading you do the better you will understand the device and the flash process. These devices are shipped with a CID which restricts them to use only ROMs intended for them....so your device will only flash Orange ROMs in its current state.
ok i have got as far as flashing the Pro Black 3.0.1 rom, it went well, only thing was, the phone was still locked after the upgrade, so i just ran the v3a unlocker on it, and it has now been unlocked.
my question now is why did it change the radio? what radio is best for the SPV M3100?
I should mention i am in the UK.
What was the radio before? Check what your friend has as this may be the best. Don't go for the latest update and Make sure you use the sd card method to flash (less things go wrong as it is dependant on the sd card inserted in your phone and your battery being charged, NOT on a flaky usb cable and pc that can be pulled out or reset/turned off). This is the riskiest part to flash making almost 100% permanent bricks if there is a problem.
My advice, use the one that your friend is using (if he knows anything about flashing he probably is a ppc flashing junkie like just about everyone else here) and use the sd card method.
As a footnote, radio roms are carrier specific - your carrier decides what is the best radio rom and using the wrong one means call dropouts and/or severe battery drainage or you.

very foolishly, before flashing the phone with the unlocker, i didnt check the radio ROM. (though i have a feeling it was around the 1.38-1.48 mark)
i'm on Vodafone though. Isn't there one standard radio (to rule them all) that most of us in the UK can get away with?
edit: im looking at the HTC Official Europe WM6 rom that comes with the built-in 1.48 radio, it would make sense that they know what the best radio is, since they make the phones...

after much reading of the threads on this forum, its starting to make sense.
one thing i still am not sure about is SSPL.
Should booting into the SSPL bootloader allow me to flash *any* rom, cos thats what this thread is claiming -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293651
but when i just now tried starting the SSPL-HERM.exe and then running the HTC WM6 firmware that i found through a bit of guesswork, it still got to the same Invalid Vender (sic) ID part!
Am i using the SSPL-HERM file the right way?
about the radio i am using vodafone as i unlocked my spv i have 1.47.30.10 found on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=326995
this is working well for me at the moment.
as for your question about flashing the roms i use the hard spl v7 which i flashed the offical htc rom with i then used this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665
to unlock my phone and super cid it i have since flashed black satin and schap's wm6 pro 4.31 and both went on fine
gd luck ask if ur not sure about any of this
Flash Hard SPL back on as it has been downgraded to 1.10 olipro instead of 2.10 olipro. This is for safeties sake.
You don't need to use sspl to flash os's from the sd card IF you have SPL 2.10 olipro installed. Just rename the .nbh file (on sd card) to hermimg.nbh and reboot into bootloader with sd card inserted. Too easy..
Cheers...
