EDIT: Updated new version:
This is a universal gps proxy launcher, hardset to launch tomtom to begin with, but configurable to launch anything you like and know the path to. When you first run it a new file will be created at \gpslaunch.ini. This file has 1 line, the path to a app you want to launch. By default it will be the main memory location tomtom is installed to. Feel free to change it as you like for other apps.
What it does:
Open the GPS port properly, and then launch the app, 30 seconds later it exits leaving just your new app running and using the gps.
Enjoy!
wat is the difference between this one and his earlier one
works...thank you
is there a difference between this and the gpstest app recommended on pdaphonehome?
This app launches only tomtom, it's not settable, but it's also not a .NET app. I wrote this because I hate .net and refused to run a .net launcher as it takes more memory and cpu then it should. This simple opens the port, waits 2.5 seconds, launches tomtom, waits 30 seconds, and exits unless you told it not to.
I could revise it a bit if there is demand but it works in present form.
Thank you shadowmite, how about add some icon to your application?
work gr8, thx!

working perfectly. cant live without it for tomtom. thank you
Simple and sweet!
Ozzy Osbourne swearing is great with TomTom
What happens if one has moved the Tom Tom files to storage card, will this app know or give you the option of changing the launch folders?
Never mind, i see there is no config file. thanks.
Blah.. meant to post that in another thread.. but now that its here. The program does work in the sense that its starting tomtom, just tells me no gps attached.
Just having the hardest time here. I do have the com4, no hardware port, 4800, and auto config set correctly. As is the location settings in the phone. The other day i was able to get a connection using Google. Just doesn't seem to want to work, its either seeking or stuck at initializing. When it was working the other day though, google was spot on while driving.
Where is everyone getting TomTom? Anyone?
When it starts TomTom for about the first 30 seconds to 2 minutes sometimes it won't show a gps, but if you wait it will come up and show it. Until there is a gps fix the "no gps device" message won't go away. You can't trust that. All this trouble is because TomTom didn't code their port open properly to begin with. I hope they catch on here that they should fix their codebase.
I'll release a update tonight to have a config file for users wanting another program to launch instead. And I'll do away with the button to where it just auto runs.
New version put up in the first post, now configurable:

Off topic, but I'm willing to bet the difference in overhead between my launcher and yours is negligible especially considering the fact that the launchers only run for under a minute unless configured otherwise.
It is slightly offtopic, but worth mentioning... Actually the .net framework entirely loads to run your app, it's pretty big. Regardless of length of time running, .net sucks. It's like saying to use a 21' moving truck to move a washing machine home from the store. No offense to your app, it's a nice one, I talked to you on the chat (zule) and tried to get you moving in native code. If you remember I am however the one who suggested a "launcher" while you were thinking daemon.

Yeah, I understand the .net issue. I only used .net to rapidly develop a test of theory. I never intended to release the .net app, it was more of a proof of theory for me, but I decided to release it to help people out with their GPS troubles until the BG daemon (which involves considerably more code, as you know) is anywhere remotely close to being ready.

Okay, I've decided to start this thread with the intention of collecting specific, practical, and working ideas on how to make this ROM a real speed demon.
Currently, my device is really fast, not just fast. I'm using 192dpi with Spb Mobile Shell and Diamond Interace skin, and every single click produces instant response. My TomTom 7 loading is also much faster (faster in portrait than landscape though) .The tweaks that I have performed however, is suitable only for the way I use the device, so not all ideas will be applicable to everyone.
Requirements:
==========
For start, let me say that my requirements are as follows:
- I do not use bluetooth headset, or bluetooh gps. I only use it for file transfer purposes to/from PC and to/from other phones.
- I do not want auto-rotate. That drives me crazy. I only want it done with my user assigned hardware button. However, I do want to use the sensor applications such as the bubble level. I use this to figure out the slope on my golf putting green, as a example of its use. (It's cheating in golf rule BTW, but I use it only for practice purposes, not during Competition)
- I want to manually initiate the QuickGPS data download, not automatically, and I do not wish to be reminded if it "expires".
- I do not use the sub-display or carry hardware keyboard
- I do not use the HTC TouchFLO, as I think that FtouchSL works much better. Just remember to exclude application such as Opera, Resco File explorer so that you don't end up having the half freezing effect.
- I do not use Windows Live, as I'm not in US or England
Tool needed
=========
You need to install FDCSOFT Task Manager to manage the services.
The idea
=======
To disable all unused services which requires loading as well as resources to run on a continula basis.
What services have I disabled?
======================
1. SubDisplay(SDM0)- this is only needed if I use keyboard and I want the subdisplay to work.
2. HTC Sensor Service (Athena)(SEN1: ) this is only needed if I want the device to auto-rotate globally. If I want it to rotate only for specific applications, I still can disable this if I use the SKKV GSensor application..
3. Windows Live (WLM0). I don't use this software, so why let this service run all the time?
4. Bluetooth Audio Gateway (BAG0) I think I only need it if I'm using bluetooth headset but not sure. Those of you with BT headset might want to see if the headset still works if this is disabled.
5. Bluetooth HID Loader (BHL0) I was surprise that all file transfer still works with this disabled.
6. Certificate Enroll Engine (CES0) Not sure what the function is, but my device works okay without it. May be those who connect to the corporate server might need this,
7. Credential Manager (CRD0) Same comment as for item 6.
Set as Manual:
===========
QuickGPS app service (Stop, and set manual).
Currently my File system cache is enabled with cache size of 8MB. My File System filter cache is 4096 sectors and Glyth cache is 64KB. However, I really do no know what is the most optimal setting here. Perhaps someone who has played around and experimented more than myself would improve on this.
In addition, go to the Proccess tab and terminate the following processes:
- BioTouch.exe
- SAPSettings.exe
These two items will come back after each soft reset, so you need to do each again. Anyone knows how to more permanently disable these, please let me know.
Today plugings:
===========
If you're using SPB mobile shell, you should be able to do away with almost all other plugins. I just tick the Home Tab in Today Item selection screen, and pin my most frequently used applications there. I might also place my news feed there later. With spb mobile shell, I now basically have the entire today screen vacant for just these two plugins. Before this, my iLauncher, sbsh weather, spb time, spb phone suite used to take a while to load up after each soft reset. Now, I no longer use iLauncher, SPB time, SBSH weather, SPB Phone suite. Spb mobile shell takes far less resources and loads, loads much faster, and works more quicly than having those four plugins. Part of my continual improvement process I guess to move on.
At present the VGA skin for SPB Mobile shell could not be said to be as attractive as those availabel to the QVGA users. Hopefully this will change.

I'm using 1.58. I do really think that there is a noticeable improvement in data connection speed using this version.
Let's use this thread to collect all the ideas specific to the Sogarth Base ROM
Cheers.
1) Disable SAPsettings too unless you have a car BT and you want to access the SIM data (SAP=Sim Access Profile)
2) Install NETCF3.5 using modaco tools NETCFCFG and NETCFv35 cab. You still have the 2.0 and level will work PLUS the 3.5 version to speed up some other appz
BioTouch
Hi EagleSteve,
This post is great idea. This lets us collect and verify all the possible tweeks which we need very much, as this ROM is great, but needs proper set of settings.
About BioTouch, I think it belongs to TouchFlo. I did not instal it (I run Irus Vanilla flavour of Sogarth's rom and FTouchSL as well) and I do not have BioTouch on my list of processes.
It is funy, I also did not install SubDisplay staff, but I have it on list of services, but in stoped state. To be sure I disabled it.
I wonder what about TaskManager(TMX0) and EnlargeStartMenu(EMX0). Both of them I have in stopped state. I do not use TaskManager, as I use WKTask, so mayby I could disable it as well.
I also do not use EnlargeStartManu, but I remember that once Sogarth said that some other apps or services relay on EnlargeStartmenu, so I am afraid to disable it. Any clues?
By the way my, battery status shows up in 10% steps. I think I have ommited something while installing Irus addons. I wonder what could that be.

Odd. The Subdisplay service should be defined in X7510_Subdisplay, so if you removed that, the service shouldn't be there either. It's definitely not in my list, and I removed X7510_Subdisplay.

You're correct that the HTC Task Manager depends on the TaskManager service. Removing PACKAGE_Diamond_TaskManager and PACKAGE_Diamond_TaskManager_0409 will remove that service from the list. Also, EnlargeStartMenu isn't needed - I think you're remembering when I mentioned Diamond_LargeTitleBar (and the corresponding LargeTitleBar/AP21 service), which is notably more useful.

I TaskManager is the tool you use to view the services is'nt it?
Enlagestartmenu could be safely disabled AFAIK,but personally I like it. I do not like the enlaged bottom menu text, but I like the enlaged text for the task bar. Anyway, don't be afraid to stop it and see what happens. If it does not have any ill effect, then go ahead to disable it.
Now that you mentioned it. I thought battery could change in 1% increment in WM6.1 so I also wonder why this changes in 10% increment. That does not bother me however.

HTC Task Manager is too limiting in functionality, which is why we're using FdcSoft Task Manager. I suppose I would go ahead to remove that.
Edit: Actually I do not have any task manager service in my list. I think this is because I had already gone into Start/Settings/System/Task Manager (the white one, not the dark one) and under button tab, I uncheck the Enable Quick Meu on today screen.
Sogarth, from end user's perspective, what is the difference between EnlargeStartMenu and LargeTitleBar? That information is needed before I go ahead to change it and do the correct enabling/disabling.

My understanding is that EnlargeStartMenu gets you the oversized start menu and menus. LargeTitleBar gets you the status bar "magnification" (where the entire screen gets filled with whatever notifications you have).

So, enlarge menu is for the top part of the screen, while large title bar is for the bottom?
I hate big text at the bottom. It makes it necessary for me to scroll my menu items, and mess up the text in a number of applications.
Okay, I now know what the Large Title bar is. It is the guy that gives you the full screen (with the title System Status) with the Data Conncetion Icon, Phone Signal Icon, and Volume Icon when you click on these otherwise small icons on the task bar. Okay, it is useful.

EnlargeStartMenu enlarges the Start Menu and all other menus (including the ones in, say, Resco Explorer). LargeTitleBar only affects the notification icons, I believe. For example, if you tap on your signal icon, does it come up with a black screen labelled "System Status", with magnified versions of all of your other notification icons? That's LargeTitleBar.

Thanks. Removed. Don't have a bluetooth car phone. Even if I have it, it would not make sense to use it. Athena is already a good speakphone.
What about the biotouch? I regret having installed it since if I ever want auto-rotate I could use SKKV Gsensor. Where is the registry entry to remove in order to get this service out of the system for good?
Edit: found this folder: HKLM/Software/HTC/Biotouch. Can I delete the entire key? Will it inadvertantly remove also the component needed to run BubbleLevel and the other sensor based program?

BioTouch is for TouchFLO. To completely disable TouchFLO, you should be able to disable the SmartTouch service. Unfortunately, I'm actually not sure where Biotouch.exe gets started from. I'm looking right now, though....

I've seen lots of conflicting information about filesystem caching. Thing is, according to Microsoft, all of the numbers you think you're changing either do nothing (since the values are actually loaded in XIP), or the numbers only affect SD cards (post from April 13, 2006 2:13 PM).
Now... that being said... guess what? We can muck around with the XIP ourselves! So maybe that would be an interesting option....
SmartTouch service
Can anybody tell something about SmartTouch. Is it with TouchFlo, so if this is not used then we could disable SmarttToch as well?

Maybe this is my problem with AgePhone and it's crackling sound in this rom. I believe in Irus Full, there was .NETCF 2.0 and I installed NetCF3.5 afterwards. Mayby this AgePhone uses 2.0? This means I should go back to kitchen and try to cook my version of Vanilla wit Necf2.0 and then install all the rest from Irus addons.
I wonder if I can omit this endless customization loop, as my first attempt ended up with it so I dropped it and went to Irus version, only to find out that it was there as well. Maybe it was not in the rom, but in my extended rom. I've opened it and found some config.txt with cabs to install. I think they are from my original HTC rom 6.0, but am not sure.

If this is the case, it would mean there is no point playing with the pagepool size, right? Might as well have 0 MB pagepool like what irus is doing with his latest ROM.
Victoria, Agee Phone works
I just found that they have new version, 2.62. I installed it and it works well. Great. so now I can stay on this rom at last, as all the other things seem to be solved.
Edit:
wuuu. It is not working on 3G/HDSPA. It only works well on WiFi. It is strange, becouse my office is connected to internet through HDSPA dongle. It means that some network settings in this rom make VoIP connection such a poor one. I have to further investigate.
The other day I was at a football game where I had to park on a golf course far from the stadium and ended up wandering around for 20 minutes trying to locate the car afterward.
I knew that the iPhone had an app called "Dude, Where's My Car?" which let someone use GPS to tag a specific location and then later use Google Maps to guide them back to the GPS mark, but when I did some searching I couldn't find a WinMo version. So I made one.
This version isn't as sexy as the iPhone app, but it's free, and you can store up to 3 different locations and even name them if you'd like. When you want to locate one, you just click the respective Find button and you will be provided an arrow or compass direction (N, NW, S, SW, E, SE, W, NE) and approximate distance to your destination which will change as you continue to move.
I did some testing and got rid of whatever bugs I could find and everything seems to work. Since I find it useful to have, I wanted to pass it on to the community in case they might be interested as well.
If you find any problems with it, let me know, otherwise enjoy.
UPDATE 3
I finally got around to adding arrow guidance to accompany compass directions for finding a destination. The arrows are a bit finicky, but its partially due to the quality of the gps fix and the amount of fluctuation in the coordinates it gets. I find that the best way to work with it is to travel in one direction for a short distance steadily until a steady arrow appears. Once that happens, turn in the direction of the arrow and keep walking in the direction it had indicated until it changes to reflect the direction you turned. I.e. if you are walking straight and right arrow appears, turn right and keep walking straight until the right arrow changes to an up arrow.
I also updated the source code package for anyone interested in modifying the code. As before, I just ask that you keep its open nature going (GNU style) and if you post a new version of the software with arrows, or a better GPS interface (that uses triangulation as an option), etc. that you link the new software back to this thread and you let me know about it so I can check it out
UPDATE 2
As requested, I have attached the source code for the project developed with Visual Studio 08. It's not super clean since I put it together kind of rapidly, but it is decently commented. Anyone is welcome to modify this code and use it for your own personal development. Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions.
UPDATE
Attached a screenshot from my visual studio emulator. It should look the same as on the phone but with longer decimal values for the GPS coords.
Also attached the .cab files for the .NET framework that people were having issues with. I don't know if those will resolve the problems or not, but I developed the phone using the 3.5 compact framework. If you have that, a GPS chip on your phone, and WinMo 6 it should work for you.
Downloading, will try it and give you some feedback.
I'll try this out later. The compass feature is nice, something that nuePark doesn't have.
Thanks for pointing me to nuePark. I wish I had located it when I first did my searching, but then I wouldn't have created this. It looks like I unintentionally covered some peoples' requests for naming and multiple locations. Good times.
theres also an app called wm mini gps, or something along those lines. it will let you set a point, then navigate back to it later.
just my 2 cents
you can also do this in google maps.
The WM Mini GPS looks pretty cool. Google maps is ok, but only if you save it as a favorite. Not very good for temp stuff, and I'm not sure you can add a mark based on your current location (vs an address, which I know you can). I guess this app fuses the functionality and adds flexibility with naming and multiple spots. Thanks for pointing out both options.
bug in progam
smrtdrmmr thanx for the program but the prob is
immediately upon install my lil scroll wheel thingy (dont laugh) stop functioning normally instead of scrolling while browsing it activated the call volume function just like I had tapped the lil speaker icon....
That's really strange. It definitely didn't do that for me and I had to install/uninstall several times during the testing process. The installer is a generic project type based on the directions I got from MSDN. You might have some conflicting settings or something. Anyone else experience this?
This nice little utility works great on my Tilt. I'm gonna move this thread to Development and Hacking so it can have greater exposure for other devices.
Thanks

I thought about using an arrow that rotates around, but because the phone's orientation can change relative to the compass direction I thought it might be kind of confusing (I.e. it points left so you turn left and start walking but it keeps pointing left because it wants you to travel West and you have rotated the phone).
It would be possible for me to track the direction that someone is traveling and adjust the arrow accordingly, but again, phone orientation could vary and it's just more complicated to deal with. The compass directions are fixed so it keeps things simple and generic no matter what way you are pointing your phone.

Universal backlight fix / TomTom backlight fix
for WM5 & Up
Hi guys! I just installed TomTom on my S740 and found it still has that annoying bug where the backlight keeps going off, so I decided I would write my own app to fix this problem.
It features completely transparent operation with backlight resuming normal function when the target app is not focused (i.e. when one minimizes TomTom), universal-ness so it can be applied to any app, lightweightness, and doesn't touch the system in any way.
In future, I may also expand it to support configurable key-to-key and key-to-mouse translation, to make some PocketPC-only apps usable also on the Smartphone.
For the interested, see all the details at the program's webpage.
And let me know what you think about it.
Thank you!
Thanks! I think it is a great idea!
I have been looking around for such app to keep the backlight always on when necessary - e.g. reading e-books, watching video and etc.
My feedback is it may be a little troublesome to do the link to each application you want to apply?
Is it possible to make it a background app, whereby when turned on it keep the backlight on always, but when turned off it revert back to the default setting in Power management.
Thanks.

I've put on my web page an easier semi-automatic procedure for creating the link, you just have to enter the path to the executable and the name for your shortcut, and download the ready-made .lnk file (be warned that it doesn't work with firefox, though, but it does with IE and Opera.)
I don't think it's so difficult and time-consuming now
There already are apps or mortscritps that do what you want, I.e. changing the systemwide setting, but it is exactly what I don't want to do: impose additional hassle on the user having to start/stop an app, and mess with registry and systemwide settings... I wanted LightJacker to be as invisible to the use as it could.
Hi there thenext1, I tried your app and the set up was fine and it works great, so thanks very much for that. I like the way it picks up the icon from the original app, this got me thinking that you could make an adaption of your app that just injected a new icon into a shortcut for any app and that is all it would do, just to change the icon for any app and nothing else, if you see what I mean, sorry to be a little off topic but just a thought. I have some apps that have horrible Icons I would like a simple way of adding my own Icon into a shortcut. "IconJacker"

That function is outside LightJacker's scope, anyway, you can try editing the .lnk file and changing the last path after the "?" mark to reflect a path to an .ico file on your phone, and editing the last number to be zero or remove it with the comma altogether.
I don't know if it will work.
Perfect idea! Sounds like a super program!! I have been looking for a feature like this!
A question: can it monitor several programs also? (e.g. Tomtom and igo and acrobat reader)? Seems like the shortcut generator can only support one program...

Just create a shortcut for each of your program.... be warned though, I didn't test multiple programs at once. It might not work.
Has anyone gotten this to work with an HTC Touch Pro? I've tried installing this - and after I create the shortcut, and click the master app I'm trying to keep lighted - I get the following error message:
"The file 'ljack' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."
When I click on the ljack.exe file on it's own - I get the following message:
"LightJacker error 2"
I'd read that another program that requires a purchase, "smartlight" was incompatible with our phones, so I'm wondering if it's something unique to the Touch Pro.

Error 2 means that an incorrect command line was supplied - in your case, no cmd line at all.
The other error with the proper shortcut is a windows mobile generic error, and I don't know why it comes up, it should run fine as it does when start ljack.exe on its own....
Maybe your phone isn't fully app-unlocked?
A super idea for a program! however, a GUI would be nice....
command-line options are not very handy. And I think that is where the Error 2 comes from. I also had trouble using your .lnk maker.
Hmmm, your site seems to be down.
Any chance you could upload the cab here on xda?
Yes, I confirm...
I tried several times.... The website is dead since this morning. So, no chance to download this promissing application until now.
For a very similar app go here:
http://oldsap.blogspot.com/2009/02/dontsleep.html
there is a version which prevents the PPC from entering standby, and one that does it only while wifi is on. Also a great app!

You are right! Will investigate the problem.
@parkhaus: what'd be the GUI for?
I would love to have a program that keeps the backlight on when certain programs are running (Adobe reader, Tomtom, ebook reader, etc).
A menu for defining those programs would be great! making shortcuts for each program is a bit too complicated for most users.
A solution in MortScript you can find here
Note: knowledge of german language is required

An utility in .NET CF can be easily made, but I absolutely don't have any spare time to do it.
Or you can use the method provided by the above users, although it's the old method of changing values in the registry.
Thankyou very much, I needed an app like this for Memory-Map OS5 (App for Off-road satnav in the UK).
I don't suppose you use winmo 6.5 do you? I have another problem with that app in 6.5 where it has icons along the bottom like 6.5 does - however, as 6.5 changes the width of the icons at the bottom, I cannot see all the icons when in the app. If there is any chance you could also code something to alter the size of the bottom buttons whilst in a certain app, that would be even better!
There is a free trial @ http://www.memory-map.co.uk/ should you care to try and code this in.
OK, I used and tested this with TomTom and Memory-Map, and all seems good.
A couple of things, however.
As the size of the app is so small, why go around duplicating it?
Personally, I found that putting LightJacker in \Program Files\LightJack and then doing my app shortcuts like this:
107#"\Program Files\LightJack\ljack.exe" \Program Files\Navigator\TomTom Navigator.exe?TomTom Navigator.exe,101
Meant that I could:
a) Only keep one copy of lightjacker for multiple apps. If there is an update, you only need replace the exe and dll once.
b) Use the shortcuts anywhere. I have one shortcut in the start menu, and one in the app folder. That way, if you have to pick an app via a folder list that starts in the root, you do not have to navigate through the windows folder to get to the start folder, which takes ages
Working on Rhodium (ATT Tilt2 - WM 6.5)
This works on my Tilt2, but with the following tweaks.
The author's site recommends this format for the .lnk file, but this didn't work for me. It produced and Error 4:
123#"\Storage Card\Program Files\GoogleMaps\ljack.exe" GoogleMaps.exe?\Storage Card\Program Files\GoogleMaps\GoogleMaps.exe,101
But using the format in the previous post, it works - the backlight stays on while this program is the front program, and the backlight dims properly when the program goes into the background or is shut down:
123#"\Storage Card\Program Files\GoogleMaps\ljack.exe" \Storage Card\Program Files\GoogleMaps\GoogleMaps.exe?GoogleMaps.exe,101
The only thing not working is the icon. Following the advice on the author's site, I used Resource Hacker to find the Resource ID for the icon, which appears to be 800. But changing that in the link file stilll results in the link showing a generic icon.
Any suggestions on how to get the proper icon to show in the Start Menu for Google Maps?
Have copied Navipanel shortcut to start menu but when activated will only connect to Co pilot. Is there any tweak to coonect this to Tomtom navigator which I have installed.
It would be great if this is possible. Thanks in advance
mmine connects to telenav.. asked the same thing with no answer... i don't believe there is a way... just a scheme to make you use the gps app that came with the phone....... unless someone can prove me otherwise
Using Telenav and have absolutely no problem with it. What makes it better is that I have not paid a penny for it yet. Can't beat free, plus it works just fine.

Hi,
where did you get the Telenav free from? I can do with a satnav.
Thanks
I just use the one that is pre-installed on the phone. Bear in mind that its probably because I reset my phone a lot . I install stuff and if it creates a hitch or a bug on my phone I reset it.
I can't remember exactly, but there's a registry and icon tweak that you have to do for it to work for any other GPS program, but it wont work the same way as when you click on Address or Home and have TomTom installed. Usually, since it comes with either CoPilot or TeleNav it is coded so it performs that action when you click it on Navipanel (Example: Click Home on Navipanel and it'll open CoPilot and automatically enter your Home address and all you have to do is press "Go"). The registry and cfg file hacks can help, but you're gonna have to search for those because I can't recall from memory.
As for the "free" Telenav, it's only a trial period. Meaning after 30 days it's gone. Unless you hard reset and enter new username or whatever information it asks for you won't be able to continue using it free. No such thing as "free" with Telenav since you have to connect to their servers to use their program (which is complete bull**** in my opinion).
if i can help ??
Try this

Thanks for that it worked a treat with TomTom Navigator
You can get Telenav for free if you have Sprint, otherwise you can get a 30 day free trial from the website, telenav.com
Paying for it is worth it though, it's a nice app.
^ perhaps if it was a once time payment.. THEN i can probably justify that purchase... BUT it's a monthly subscription to something that i can get for free... totally ridiculous.. i hate how i can't use navipanel just because they have it locked to avoid using another gps software on it.. crap

It appears to want the trial CoPilot folder installed. If you have flashed, and therefore lost CoPilot, can it be rebuilt with an empty folder structure? If so, what should it have ?
I made a standalone navigation app for Wear OS! Here's the link to the app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.onibaku.standalonewearmap
Here's the full description on the app so you can get a glance at the features:
Users can type in a location, or long press on the map to input a destination. They can choose to travel via walking, cycling or car.
The app will navigate the user from their current location to the destination using turn-by-turn navigation. Each step is highlighted on the path, with text to show you what action to take, and how long until you reach that step. The map rotates along with the device, so will follow the forward-facing direction of the watch.
The app only needs an internet connection for the initial retrieval of the directions. After that, it solely relies on GPS until the user arrives at the destination.
This (obviously) only works on watches that have GPS.
If you have any suggestions at all, I'd love to know them.
The next feature I plan to implement is importing a GPX file in from Google Drive, so you can navigate a more unorthodox/scenic route, which would suits cyclists. I initially developed this for when I go cycling, as we don't usually want to take the fastest route somewhere.
Let me know if there any burning features that are needed in this, and I'll do my best to deliver. This is a small side-project, so I don't have too much time to work on it, but I find it quite useful personally, and I hope others will, too.
Someone suggested I release a demo version so people can try it and see if they wish to buy it. I have released one here
It only has the dropped pin functionality, and only allows walking as a navigation mode. The zoom is also locked.

This is looking really good. I want true standalone navigation on my Huawei Watch 2 4G. It has a sim so loads the route standalone and seems to be able to do everything expected...i'm trying the demo version now.
One question though...unless i'm missing something..how do you exit the app? I'm currently having to force close it.
(And as a side note have you checked out the Wear OS app Ghostracer? You can import a gpx file and follow your progress on a map on the watch. Maps are downloadable to the watch, although ive never tried that. My watch has a sim so updates the map as im riding using the watches data. Heavy on the battery though.)

I had not realised that the app does not cease to use GPS whilst it is in sleep mode, so I have added a button to exit the app properly when you drag down. I've just released it now.
I have had a look at it, but it doesn't seem to work unless you have an android phone. I am currently looking into offline maps and importing GPX files. Do you know if it does that via the android app, and how it imports it? I was looking to use Google drive, as that seems to be the only viable storage solution supported on Wear atm.

Thankyou for the exit button, works great. Having tested the demo app i'm happy, and I will purchase. One further comment, the battery drain is heavy, as expected. Any chance of an ambient mode while the map is running to save battery? I may be pushing my luck, but I can only ask!
Ghostracer does indeed need a companion Android app on the phone. The gpx file is loaded into the app on the phone (using a file manager) then passed to the Ghostracer app on the watch. Maps are treated the same, but I just use the data from my sim in the watch to load maps as I ride when needed. You can follow a gpx route standalone on the watch in a similar way to following the route on your app. I am not connected to Ghostracer in any way, I just think its a wonderful app for cyclists and runners (within the watches battery limitations). And the free version allows you to test all its features. It might not be right for you, but it was worth a mention based on what you said earlier. (And the map screen has an ambient mode.... )

Great . I did play around with the ambient mode, but it was just the same as the standard google maps ambient mode. It takes away the turn-by-turn, location, and path. If I could persist these, and set the GPS to update every 30 secs - 1 minute, I'd probably keep it, but I'm not sure how. I'd like to stick in options to set the GPS update frequency, or have the screen turn back on only for upcoming turns.
That's really cool! That's essentially what I would have liked on my watch but standalone. I really don't like the idea that you HAVE to use a companion app, especially when it's not available for iOS. I know they're competing watches, but I love the price point of android watches compared to Apple's, and their features shouldn't pale in comparison by way of hardware.
How does their ambient map work, if you don't mind me asking? I'd like to look into it. What does their paid version allow you to do? I only had a paid version before someone mentioned to put the free one on, just to give people a flavour of it. I tried to emphasise the main bit, which was the turn-by-turn navigation. The search and other transportation modes were secondary.
Cheers for the feedback and suggestions, though! I really do appreciate it! Let me know if there's anything else you'd like.

Ghostracers ambient map is black background with white markings until you lift your wrist...but that might not work when using your app while driving (watch off the wrist?).
I've now purchased your app (Google made that hard work!)...all still good. One question...when I zoom the map in the map un-zooms straight back. Any way to make the zoom stick?

Do the markings include the path/trail? I've used the black background one before, and the building outlines are (kinda) white. Yeah, I do have my watch affixed to my handlebars on my bicycle.
Great - Thanks! It's much appreciated! How come it was hard work, if you don't mind me asking? Ah, yep. That was one of the first things I forgot to change! I completely forgot about it! I've made it so that if you zoom/pan, it'll stick unless you press the "my location" button again.

Hi ruggs1234, it was a long time since you wrote your experience with this app. I downloaded the demo today and I tested it. Looks like since last Google's update, the huawei watch 2 doesn't use its built-in standalone GPS. Please, would you mind to check whether you are having this problem now? The only way I got it work was by connecting the watch to a phone through Bluetooth.
Kind regards, Angel

Hello Angel,
The app still works ok on my watch, I tested it yesterday.
With my phone switched OFF I use my watches inbuilt sim to start the route (the app needs data to download the initial route, it can use the connected mobile but mine was switched off). I then switch off the sim in my watch and follow the route using only the gps in the watch. The app worked as it always has.
HOWEVER, my watch isn't running the latest version of Wear OS (it's running Wear OS 2.0, Home app 2.16). I never update anything Google if i'm not forced too, their updates often break more things than they fix. Everything I use on the watch works great and i'd like it to stay that way....
Hi,
well, I gave it a test (full paid version) - TicWatch 3 Pro 4g/LTE (all up to date). It doesn't work. All tested in standalone mode (no phone involved).
- app crashes when there is no GPS fix (GPS is on, but no fix yet)
- when I set an route to navigate (pin or search) it just endlessly shows progress circle and nothing else happens (GPS on with fix, LTE on and working)
So...
BR, Doman.
I installed the Demo version on my ticwatch 3 pro gps (updated everything to current versions and no modifications (yet))
App is starting, map is not showing, just the gps location button on the left and a white/grey screen. I can pin a location on the white screen and its actually getting a location next to me and tries to route there - but without any map showing.
Any app for Gear S3 ?
