Quest for the right radio - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

First, this forum is wicked. I've gone from knowing jack-squat about my device to... well to knowing jack-squat with hard spl and a new rom. I've been tinkering around and am slowly gaining confidence and knowledge, but there is one thing that eludes me.
I'm trying to figure out which radio is best suited for my HERM200 on Rogers in Halifax. Currently I'm running Pays final 6.0 and radio 1.51. I have been experimenting, but the 3g coverage is so patchy it's tough to tell what is working and what's a fluke. I've tried 1.42 (factory), 1.43, 1.46, 1.47, 1.48, 1.51, 1.54...
Before everyone jumps all over me I have search and found nothing. I was hoping someone would have personal experience and be able to make a good recommendation.
Thanks in advance

only YOUR personal experience matters, but in Toronto and the Golden Horshoe, I've had the best results with 1.47.30 and best battery life when combined with Berds WM6 or Faria's WM6.1.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a shot.
It's just so hard to learn what will give me the best connection when coverage out here is so junk... I look forward to my next trip back home to TO to see what this device can actually do.

Newbie to upgrading, could use some pointers.

I have a 8525 and would like to upgrade to the new WM6. Like the title states I'm new to this, so I ask you all what is the best rom version for WM6 and what is the easiest way to do it. Also what kind of complications could I be looking at. Thanks in advcance.
YOU HAVE TO READ THE WIKI.
Everything is there and nothing that anyone can post here in a few sentences will take away from knowing how not to brick your phone.
I am new as well, took the time to read the info, understand the workings and just today I flashed my phone for the third time.
WM6 Vanilla, then WMXL .20 came out and today WM6 LVSW came out which is although not the most fun ROM (tech-head wise) it is by far the most stable.

I am new and need help.

Ok I may get beat and flogged here. I have read through the Wiki and all of the threads and quite frankly I am lost. I am very new to all of this. I have managed to put new programs and even WM6. However the other day the guy at the store showed me his Tilt I use the 8525 and he had the touchflo which I thought was cool. He told me to come here and I could find it and add it to my phone (Like it was that easy) However I do not want to screw up my phone So I thought I would post what I know and see if someone can help walk me through the safest way to do this.
So here are the things I know about my phone.
Hermies 100
Ipl 1.04
SPL 2.03
Rom version 3.62.502.3
Radio Version 1.54.07.00
Protocol version 32.86u.7020.23h
OS is WM6
I found this rom at this threadand thought it looked nice However as I try to flash, it states that I need to have SPL 1.11 to do it safely.
How do I put this ROM on my phone with out bricking it or anything else.
Do I need to put SPL 1.11 on my phone if so How do I do this and where do I get it? (Barney style I am very new to this)
Any other advice for someone starting out at this I find the Wiki and all of that confusing mainly because I have never did any of this before I never knew you could. Once I understand it and have done it a few times I will get it and be doing it like a pro till then I need the preschool version
Thank you all for your help.
If you know a thread that adresses this very issue you could also direct me to that thread. I am having problems on how to get started and what to do with the package I have!

Use an xp machine. I have read it's easier. Hope that helps you out.
Thank you! That was a great help the mrvanx site was exactly what I needed an easy break down. I have now added that and the new ROM though I cannot stream from the internet to WMP. It may take a bit of messing around before I get it.

I have two pieces of advice for you SS.
1. Get rid of that Radio by flashing a sub 1.50 series... lots of radios failed and it's not definitive but the 1.5 series seems to drive the chips too hard. Try this one: ftp://xda:[email protected]/HERM_Radio_Only_1.48.00.10_CustomRUU.rar
2. Try the app attached below for the streaming vid... it works for me.
MAKE SURE you get hard spl v7 installed, it will save you tons of grief, take the word of one who has bricked before...
Thank you For your help. I loaded the radio to see how it does I am still relitively new to all of this. I did find the problem with the streaming video. The problem was in the connections. The new rom had me connecting on isp.cingular etc. I needed to change it to wap.cingular for the APN and the user name to [email protected] with the password of cingular1 This corrected my problems and I can stream again with a great rom! So again thank you everyone for your help.

going to upgrade to new rom....

I have the leaked 3.16 rom right now and was wondering what would be the best way to go about upgrading.
want to use dcd's kitchen. I didnt unlock after the 3.16 update and that update took all i had to get it right. Im no dcd by any stretch of the imagination, in fact hes forgot more than ill ever know.
should i just run the update from the htc site and then do the dcd rom and kitchen?
seems like you have to do too much foolin around going back and installing a new radio, dotnet framework (wouldnt load on my pc) etc. just to be able to do it.
it just all gets too confusing, so if anyone out there can show me the light and how to go about this as painless as possible it sure would be appreciated. My phone is dumpster diving latley and is starting to agrovate me rebooting all the time on its own and messaging popping up etc.
Time to move on
thanks
WOW, 182 posts and yet you're asking us? All that time and you have not yet flashed? Put on your booties to cover your cold feet, install 2.40 olipro, flash Sprint RUU, then DCD rom for your provider and be done with it already!!!

Nice rant.
Anyways, flashing from SD is def faster and more stable as you don't need to establish a tenuous active sync connx.

It's Titan Time Now!! (NOT A NOOB HERE) (TweakMan-General Questions Thread Creator)

**THIS IS NOT A NOOB QUESTION, IM NOT ASKING HOW TO INSTALL THIS, OR ANYTHING OF THAT NATURE!! SO PLEASE DON'T BLOW IT OFF LIKE IT'S A STRAIGHT NOOB ?? THAT WILL TAKE DAYS TO EXPLAIN**
Hey guys, Tweak here. Guess what. Just bought a Titan. I've been running my faithful Vogue for the past year, but with my new business opening up, I really need the WifiRouter , which I have to recommend! BUT I NEED YOU HELP!!! PLEASE!!!
I want to use the BuilOS PPCgeeks Kitchen to install a custom ROM on my new Titan (of course) , but I am so caught up in the Vogue world, that I am lost over here in Titan land.
All I need to know is where to find a good ROM , preferably Alltel ROM, but pretty much any ROM , that will upgrade my RADIO version, so I can use the BuildOS ROM's.
I guess you have to upgrade the radio in the Titan, just as you do in the Vogue to use these ROMs, correct?
Also, which build , or what ROM do you recommend me trying out first.
Thanks guys. I really hope you help a long time XDA bud out here.
I have used several of DCD's Titan ROM's and I love them. BTW, I have an Alltel PPC-6800. I just flashed mine again with DCD's newest ROM 3.2.5 and I am using radio 3.42.30, with no problems yet. Good luck and welcome to Titan world.

X2 on that
Are you dead set on using BuildOS from ppcgeeks?
I would use roms based off dcd's kitchen only. ppckitchen doesn't seem nearly as stable as dcd's roms.
I just bought my girlfriend a vogue yesterday and we were upgrading the rom and everything. Theyre basically the same in regards to upgrading
Agree with the majority
I have to agree that the DCD ROMs have treated me the best.
I have tried the ppcgeeks Kitchen and always come back.
haha thats silly. your claim to fame is creating a thread in r&d. had to point it out
but yeah, use DCD's latest, and 3.42.30 radio. you can't go wrong.
Thanks Guys!!!
Hey guys. Thanks for the info. Im gettin ready to try DCD's kitchen right now.
And hey agaus, thats not my ticket to fame. But that is how most people on this site know me is for answering things in that thread. Everyone has clicked it one time or another.
The only reason I mentioned it here is for this reason. If a noob posted a question in here , and has very little knowledge of flashing, most of the time, the thread is completley looked over. I just wanted to make it a point that I wasn't a noob, and that I just needed some guidance here in the titan world.
Also. I miss my Vogue. I loved my Vogue. But the Titan ROCKS! The only thing that actually made me keep it was the ability to use WifiRouter. I run my laptop, my iPod touch, and everything off it. I even created an app to run along side with WifiRouter, that will allow to connect to my PS3.
Get wifirouter if you do not have it.
Thanks guys.

If you were "not a NOOB" then perhaps your first two posts here in "Titan Land" would have been researched prior to posting. I'm sorry to say this, but there is plenty of information about kitchens and w/e else. And most of which is preference to the user. The DCD roms are about the best you'll find here, or anywhere else for that matter. Making more then half of your first post about how much of an un-noob you are doesn't help your case when you ask for help. Just ask it like anybody else would and I'm sure it would be answered. Even if answered before.
Try them both out....PPCGeeks kitchen and DCD......there are a lot of good chefs......try NO2Chem his tools are great and so are his ROMS......Nexvision is great and JD's ROMS which you should know if you came from the Vogue.....try em all and see what YOU like.....that is the best way....
you can always try and step outside the box of dcd and no2chem, and try out JDs rom. he just began working on the titan again about 2 weeks ago, and i think the speed of his rom alone justifies why people should atleast give it a spin.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=32990
(the latest rom on there labeled 8-4-08 has a defect with reading sd cards. but he fixed it already in his test rom and i think a solid release should be out pretty soon)
but for your radio....why not just flash the radio only via sd? its so much easier. 3.42.50 is out now, seems to be getting a good response

BASIC KNOWLEDGE (OS, RADIO, SPL itd.)

Due to my own problems with getting informations about issues mentioned in topic, I'm posting this thread...
Idea is simple: could anyone explain strictly, what is SPL, RADIO etc., PLEASE?? The reason is, that there is really a lot of informations about it on the forum, but as they are everywhere - they are "nowhere"...;/
In advance: sorry, that I'm not spending hours on searching for answers, but the idea is to collect all this basic informations in ONE place...
Hope you will understand and won't shout at me...x)

Ye, I was there of course, but sorry - no informations found about WAHT particular things ARE, only HOW TO do some things (e.g. how to make them works)... Can't find anything in "Athena for beginners" (and Athena Manual), Athena FAQ's and so on... Or am I blind...??
I have to agree with you that for noobs it can be quite overwhelming.
Here is a list of what everything stands for
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Acronyms
The radio is the part of the phone that enables communication with the cell towers and the gps satellites. Upgrades can help to improve signal strength, battery life and gps responses.
Anyone can upgrade the radio on their windows mobile phone without making any other changes to the phone (assuming that the radio was designed for your phone and not another phone- the latter is possible but requires extra work).
Upgrading the radio is quite straight forward- select a radio rom that you want and then either put it on an sd card or flash it from active sync (xp) or wmdc (vista).
This will have no impact on the operating system (o/s) and as such you will not lose anything.
Upgrading the o/s involves wiping the existing o/s- in this case you will lose all of the info on your phone- you can use 3rd party programs to backup/restore.
There are limitations on the o/s roms that you can use. Official upgrades from the supplier/maker will be straight forward- other (better/newer) roms might require you to make your phone cid unlocked so that you can install the rom.
Here is info on making your phone cid unlocked
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=315831
This will also allow you to use radio roms not initially designed for your phone
There are other considerations to take into account regarding the memory allocation in the phone. Some of the o/s roms require you to change the memory allocation- more to the o/s and less to the running programs memory. These are defined as spl1.2 or the hacked spl3.5.
To hard spl your phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=316846
Once the above has been done you MUST ensure that the rom SPL matches the spl on your phone- I have made the mistake of using the wrong rom for my spl and ****ed up my phone before.
Should you wish to downgrade your spl then read
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405604
If you forget which spl you have then enter the phone bootloader by pressing the camera button and using the stylus in the reset hole at the same time.
You can find out which radio and o/s you have by going to settings/system/device info
I hope this helps- please ask if you need more help- it is ages since I last up/downgraded my phone so hopefully any errors here will be highlighted by others.
Be warned that no rom is perfect (not even the stock roms) and that upgrading is not allowed under the terms of the warranty and is not with out risk.
It is fun though...
Wonderful!! Thank you a lot, imaginarynumber! This informations are really usefull Only two questions at the moment...

OK, but how can I check, or is my device CID-locked or maybe not...? (I'm not the first owner, so I've got no idea...) Or maybe unlocking already unlocked device wont cause any additional problems...?

So the only difference is a size of memory allocations?? Are this amounts constant for each SPL? And so the rule "higher (version) is better" doesn't works here...?
Thank you a lot for all this work one more time...
hi mrkazor
If the phone is not cid unlocked then you would not be able to use any rom other than the maker's/supplier's rom, so for example if you had a cid lock tmobile then when trying to flash it would check the signature of the rom and if it found that it was not a t-mobile rom it would not allow you to flash it.
I believe that you can check the cid status with mtty using the info 2 command (its a telnet program).
I think that it is ok to cid unlock a phone that is already cid locked (but it would be safer to check/ask in the cid unlock post).
Re the spl, there are two allocation sets, spl1.2 and 3.5 with the latter taking up more memory for the o/s. In general the higher spl version roms have more bells and whistles but there is also the risk of more incompatibility crashes/problems with the extra clever new programs. Newer windows mobile versions will require increasingly higher spl/memory allocations.
To date I have never found a perfect rom- some are better than others depending on your requirements.
I went as far as wm6.1 from wm5 and played with many different wm6.1 roms.
At the time of writing MichyPrima has a wm6.5 that looks quite impressive.
The key thing to remember with any roms is that they are based on the buggy windows ce platform.
Good luck
You were right - dont't know about CID-lock, but I had't had SIM-lock on my device before for sure, and now I have already passed all 3 steps (Sim-unlock, CID-unlock) of Olipro's Athena Unlocker, having no additional problems And what could be more interesting: succeed even despite Windows 7 on my PC I've also updated radio to 1.57, but still having SPL 1.2... In the future will be needed 3.5 (e.g. for WM6.5 by Michy ), but I have no idea how to upgrade it Is the SPL avaliable as a file (like radio) to inclose it to RUU...?
hi mrkaczor
Sorry an ommission on my behalf.
There is no single spl upgrade per se. You need to do the ap4 upgrade which will move you to spl3.5 at the same time.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=387409
After that you can then try any of the other spl3.5 roms or if you ever want to go back to an earlier stock rom you will need the spl downgrader, found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405604
These forums are the best single source of info for htc owners but the info is not always as easy to find as perhaps it could be. I guess that there are very good reasons for this but that is cold comfort to a newbie. That said many of the memebers (much wiser than me!!!) are willing to devote a lot of time to helping others. I think that some of the more experienced and established members like to pretend to be grumpy sods... yet they still help those in dire needs.
Welcome to the "club".
Hope this helps
Hope I didn't come across as a "grumpy sod". I thought the wiki was fairly thorough and covered the OP's questions.
One thing I can tell you from experience - if you have 3G available in your area, you want to upgrade to radio 1.58. It has a large network speed improvement over 1.57 and all earlier radio roms.
imaginarynumber, yes - this DO helps...xD Thanks one more time

So does 3G works on your device?? Because I have it available in my town, so I'd rather have efficient video calls...
BTW. And how it is about GPS signal? How long is your device waiting for it? Cause I've had radio v1.45 before, and it took ages for my x7500 to connect with satelites:/ And no chance for that inside the building (and for example my father's Mio p560 connects even from the building, of course not too far from some windows... Could Mio have better radio than HTC??)
Hi Techntrek
My slight wasn't aimed at you, honestly. I recently revisited the wiki after not having played with my ameo for ages and found that although it is comprehensive it is not "easy" to follow.
My grumpy sod reference was aimed more at the SuperGods such as Olipro- I have seen how much hard work he puts in so I assume that it is some kinda elder statesman bravado
I think the main problem is that there are too many assumptions re the experience of the reader. As a first timer it is difficult to follow.
Some of the threads in this forum become outrageously long, for example,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=477235
The above is a thread for the touch pro- it is hoped that users will post problems there rather than starting a new thread- there are over 2000 posts- how helpful is that.
I hope that I am not coming across as ungrateful but who has the time to go through such long posts- not even knowing if their problem is covered there or not.
I am unable to provide a better solution and thus respect people such as mrkaczor who have the guts to ask basic questions in-spite of the fear of being shot down. By the same token I also respect people like you (techntrek) who are happy to help others- keep it up
-------------------
Mrkaczor
With regard to the radio options- we have little choice with regard to radios compared to some other handsets- I never noticed any real improvement in GPS- others have. I never make video calls so issues here have never been a concern.
It seems that one radio might suit one mobile subscriber more than others. It might be helpful to mention in the radio thread which provider you are with and ask others on the same network which radio worked best for them.
Good luck
