Linux on Athena as easy as 123 now possible! - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo Upgrading

OK I made a quick search in the forum and didn't find anything which is quite a surprise...
I came along with this...
http://www.linpus.com/xampp/webmaster/Products/Linux9.4Lite.htm
Its inside the hardware limitations of Athena and could be running from the miniSD or the microDRIVE.
3G/EDGE, WIFI, Bluetooth, GPS all supported
For all of us using the Athena as laptop/replacement or just have another cellphone for actual phone calls maybe is the best news out there...
It might also support phone calls I don't know!
Also optimized for 4~7 inches screens... WTF???
I don't have the nerves to tested right now as I'm on a trip
Anyone knows more about this???!!!???

Hm...listen nice.
But i will wait, untill you will finish your trip. Then you can test it.
Thx for the informations.

wow that is cool. i would love to do this. but i would have to go back to using my kaiser ) i might give ti a try.

ummm... guys - a quick check reveals that it needs an Intel CPU and 128MB RAM - two things that the Athena doesn't have...

If you take a look at the wiki it looks like we do have the neccesary hardware.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Athena
It shows us having an Intel processor and 128 mb of ram.

I got all hot and excited by this thread but the above statment was correct you will find that the Athena doesn't have the required cpu
although you are correct it's an Intel Xscale, the Xscale cpu is based on ARM instruction sets not x86
Quote from website:
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
CPU
Intel x86 compatible
Intel, AMD and VIA at 366MHz and up
this alone bombs the thought of this linux flavor on the athena.
I agree it's possible to a limited degree i've seen other threads about this idea and the such as qtopia, Opie and similar will run their basic functions on the athena, it wouldnt' support the gsm radio or many other chips already in the athena due to a lack of development specs that haven't been worked out.
I'll never profess to be an expert in linux even though i consider my self as an average user. But i don't know how to develop or program applications in full but i know enough from my old tinkering days that the instruction set of the cpu rules alot
good thinking though =)

Yes. I'm running qtopia compiled for Universal off the USB stick, and the touchscreen is supported too.
It's also possible to attach the USB keyboard and mouse at the same time,
but then you'd use the external USB hub.
I've bought the USB host adapter exactly for that purpose.
The complete code can be dowloaded from the handhelds.org CVS
(including the ATI SD test driver, which does not work yet)

What about the new Athena that is going to come out?
Would it be able to support this linux platform ? or is the new Athena will be ARM based too?
Thanks

The new Athena is practically the same aside from its cosmetic changes, software developments and the 16gb drive

Viewsonic Viewpad 10

Anyone have the new dual boot viewpad 10? I have one and loaded the New Update Andriod 2.2 for it but the Back key doesn't work. The wifi is not working correct.
Is there anyway to load drivers for this or is there other problems?
Thank you.
By the way I have opened mine up.
It now has 2GB Ram 64GB hard drive and soon built in GPS with Active patch Ant. You can also install the 3G modem if you like. All that is missing is the modem and Ant. Sims Card slot is there.
You make me want to sell my gtab and pick up one of these. Or just bite the bullet and give the gtab to the g/f and get a vpad for myself.

Couple of questions, my wife has a ViewPad 10:
- where did you get the Android 2.2 update? Was this from Viewsonic?
- do you know of a source for the mini-vga cable?
Thanks.

hmm... i'm surprised that there's actually a variant of 64GB SSD for this model because i could've sworn it only came w/ a 32GB SSD max built in for the VPad10... where'd you get your VPad10? also if memory serves... doesn't this tablet run on an intel pine trail processor and chipset (hence the win7 dual boot)? and where'd you get the froyo update? if i recall, current non ARM based processors only support up to android 1.6 (unless there's a ROM out there built from the ground up that runs on intel's hardware)

[Q] Anybody working on a way for Windows 8 on Gtab?

There has been some discussion, but none since the Consumer Preview came out about being able to get Windows on a tablet such as the Gtab which is a Tegra2 chipset.
Does anybody know if it is even possible to get Windows on the Gtab at any point without a specific bootloader for it? With Android being more open than Windows we can tinker and change it far more than we ever will with Windows so I am not so much as asking if it is being done as much as I am asking if it can be done. And then if so if anybody is even looking at doing it. I would love to take a Consumer Preview copy and try to install it on my Gtab just to see if it would work but I don't know enough about tablet technology to even start, desktop on the other hand I'll get working, but not with a tablet.
So after all this, if anybody is willing to assist in trying this I am will to test it out. I have 2 Gtabs and I am willing to put one up for testing, but I want to do the testing so I can learn if anybody is will to teach.
IMO Never

gTab doesn't come close to meeting the min hardware specs that Microsoft has published for Win8 tablets (screen res, hardware buttons, storage space, UEFI support, Bluetooth 4.0, 720P camera, magnetometer & gyro, etc). It is doubtful that any modern Windows version will ever run in the 512M of memory the gTab has. In addition, MS has also said that Win8 Tablet will be tied to hardware (you won't be able to go to your local PC store & pick up a copy to install on any old tablet). The vendors will tie Win8 to their specific hardware & that is the only way you will be able to get it.
FYI, the Win8 tabs that were given out at BUILD had an Intel core i5 processor, 4G ram, 64G SSD, 1366x768 display, Wireless N, & 3G.
With android, devs have access to os source code that helps them to be able to modify android to the varying hardware. In the case of Win8, I don't believe you will ever see MS release source code which would make the task of porting to an unsupported devices next to impossible. Just my 2 cents.

Bauhn AMID-972XS rooting?

Just bought this tablet this morning. Found out that the programs have been signed with the wrong id. Can't update programs without deleting them, which means I need to root the device. I'd like to know if any of the rooting methods are better than any other if they work. I'd also like jellybean. Would I have to try and make a custom rom? Or could I try one from another tablet?
I'd be grateful for some help, but I know everyone is busy with more interesting stuff, so I'll wait patiently.
In the mean time I'll try some of the methods out there and hope I don't brick the device.

+1 on the questions.
I think for root, some tools using generic exploits for 4.0.3 might work. but for custom roms we might be out of luck.

Thanks. does that mean we can use the ICS 4.04 firmware from http://en.ployer.cn/support.php?id=3 along with the install guide from it? (and that the firmware between the bauhn and momo units is the same, or compatible, despite physical appearance differences (like physical keys, and pooosibly another CPU (the bauhn tablets are all Amlogic Cortex A9...if the A10 in the allwinner is the CPU type ref))?
also, any idea if the page you linked to has cooked roms with root included?
OK.
Rooted with this...

Seems to work. Have deleted youtube.apk from the system directory. Rebooted. Installed youtube 4.06? (I think) Now youtube just won't run. Did a full factory reset and cache wipe from recovery (wasn't even sure recovery existed on this thing, but there you go). Installed youtube again. Still doesn't work even after deleting program cache and deleting settings from app menu.
Will see how I go with the link from AJ88. See where it leads.
More later.
You may use 4.0.3 firmware in your tablet and may use clockwork recovery 5 in your tablet...
Many people use this firmware in micromax funbook..
Just give it a try many things in this player momo tab and your device is same..so do at your risk..
First try to run recovery if you can flash it successfully first backup your current firmware so that in future if things goes wrong you can get your original device back.
Best luck

Time to start looking for something with the same hardware.
Yes that's because if your device ram is 512 and you flash a firmware of device which has 1gb ram than how it operate?
Same for processor

these might be silly questions, but since we now have root access - is there a standard Cyanogen mod for ICS we can install/along with the required CWM or do those need to be custom made for the specific customization of ICS 4.0.3/rom/kernel/bootloader/etc?
Not silly at all as far as I'm concerned.
But; from what I've read, there is no ROM that can be installed on everything. They all have to be modified to suit the hardware.
I'm still looking into ROM kitchens at this point to figure out what needs to be done to create a ROM.
Needless to say, this'll take a while though.

If you find something that works let me know. I'm happy with ICS on mine, but I've found that the USB firmware is not exactly perfect and doesn't work properly through the Android API. You have to resort to the Kernel Native driver. I wouldn't mind finding a firmware that actually works properly.
If anyone is making a rom for this device, I'll be happy to assist, but i don't have any programing skills.
There are too many bugs on this system with Ice scream sandwich and hoping a rom would clean them out. Especially with updating the youtrube app on Google play.

Try the Ainol novo7 Elf2 Tablet at SlateDroid.com
After countless protests we've finally gotten the company AMLogic and Ainol to release sources. Though its dirty and incomplete, its something.
Some had a go at making CM9 too. The tablet uses the same SoC (AML-M6) so it has some compatible drivers, it would need to be cooked a certain different way to make it compatible though.

Has anyone had this problem? I'm wondering if it's normal due to the hardware spec of the wireless card or is my unit faulty.

Or MediaTek, but force them to give you updated kernel sources and release them to the public.
Just saying because MTK chips last longer, and perform better (except for GPU performance) than counterpart Snapdragon chips.

not mediatek they hide their resources sometime. and absolutely not Allwinner their chip are ****s... Rockchip or amilogic S is OK in the worse case scenario...
NVIDIA tegra are pricey but good for all in ones.especialy with Google support behind.
Or you can cheat on the support by using same Chips as Android one phones, nexus. or pixel..so no source hiding.

Did you not see what I had witten about forcing MediaTek to release their kernel sources?
Rockchip also hides many of their kernel sources, and are a pain to work with, (I had to use an ancient computer from over a decade ago, and had to install Windows XP, since it wouldn't work with anything newer).
Allwinner are a solid choice, since they are much more open with their sources, and are much easier to work with, it's just that not many developers work with them, but those that do, testify to them being much easier to work with.
About Amlogic, I have no idea.
Nvidia, are really good, but are even worse than MediaTek and Rockchip at releasing kernel sources, so unless it's the same chipset as the Nexus 9, it needs to be out of the question.
But please no BIG.little processors, they are great on paper, however in the real world, while they deliver, they don't deliver even close to what they should, ending up being a waste of money, since the worth:cost ratio is much farther.

But please no BIG.little processors, they are great on paper, however in the real world, while they deliver, they don't deliver even close to what they should, ending up being a waste of money, since the worth:cost ratio is much farther.

the thing about big little... nowadays with the failure of TV boxes and the slow death of tablets most big company are targeting the phone market.
and big little is mostly for phones ...
but I think the only problem is not targeting the lower end or not using too old than 2 years chips and sometime it is just better to spend a lil more for higher support and better performances.
on Nvidia side almost all chips have been open sourced by Google long time ago.
the tegra x1 in pixel c the tegra 2 3 4 and k1 in nexus tablets... so yea....

Ah sorry, I had checked it.
And it looks like they have their own code repository now, so things have definitely changed.

For all the developers on this board, what if you had...
a higher powered Mini
AOSP, let's say Marshmallow or better
all the dev tools you'd need to get to work
...what would you, could you dream to develop this computer to do?
TV box? Gaming console? Android PC? Smart home device?
Please share with us your brainstorm ideas on this. Have fun with it and don't think about what's already out on the market... think out of the box, reach for the stars, and all the other cliches you can think of. Please share in the comments below.

I would build my own version of Android!
Dual boot as much as possible!
Publish my Project ROC quicker
What about using the mini along with wireless display, and use them as a home security/automation hub? Allowing many apps and already existing "connected" devices like Philips HUE, WiFi Cameras, etc to connect and be configured for automation. Then assigning older android devices to pair and be set in various rooms, to be used as wifi motion detectors.
Well as a developer, I'd improve the way I interact with my devices as an user.
Chromecast and Android Home devices are great but they're not how the future should actually look. In my opinion Google is limiting hardware on those devices to keep prices low and make them impossible to run upcoming software, more powerful software.
Okay let's say we have an AIO device (similar to Android Home) but with a few sets of functionality baked in:
- Network attached Storage: Store all the things you want to share with the family (photos, music, movies...)
- Network attached Storage: Stream whatever is hosted in the box to the "cast enabled devices around the device"
- Network attached Storage: Synced folders between family devices per user request (similar to how resilio sync works)
- Network attached Storage: Remote access for downloads (you're out of home but you start a download that will be waiting for you when you arrive)
- Assistant: Always On Keyword detection
- Assistant: Customized context-aware commands per user inside the network (If John or his devices are not connected to the Wireless network or discoverable through BLE don't suggest content that he might like)
- Assistant: TV as a remote interface of the device with a dashboard, the device microphone as a IO device of the TV.
- Assistant: Device state awareness, notify when battery is low on x device.
BRAINSTORM -- What if Jide actually focused on getting the projects they currently have out working to perfection instead of coming out with new semi broken products?! Then, when everything worked as best as possible, Jide could come out with new stuff that makes the current goodness even better!!!! Wow, what a novel concept!
If i had it, (and if i can), I'll bring the android code and libs to windows,, it's just like WINE on Ubuntu, and isn't like the ancient emulator which is kill my usage
So,, yes... I'll open the play store just when i click it in my windows PC's, installing apk just in Program Files (Android) folder, using linux or android command in cmd (like bash actually) and getting a root access with just allow the UAC

Download Links Not Working

The reason is because Jide has left the consumer market, and had completely stopped supporting their consumer products.
Now they only work with enterprises.
Try Phoenix OS instead.

How does Phoenix compare with Remix? Will it work on a TW700 tablet? I have been trying for over a week to load Remix 3.0 with zero success

To say the truth, I had not gotten the chance to check Phoenix OS lately.
However, since you have a BayTrail CPU (those did not get much supportĺ I think that you're better off with the Android-X86 LOS or standard Linux (I highly recommend Solus, and the GNOME 3 UI has great support for touch displays), and even then, you will need to compile some of the drivers yourself (such as the touch driver for the screen, until you do so, you will absolutely have to connect a mouse and keyboard).

Thank you so much. I am checking your recommendations as i type this.
My other problem is the 1GB Ram. Which one of those you think will work best.
I am planning on connecting it via HDMI to my TV and running just 1 android app (hmdi audio/video is all i need). I don't care about touchscreen support.

With only 1 GB of RAM, I highly recommend using Android-x86's LOS 15.1 (you will still need to compile the touch driver for the screen, and probably other drivers as well, including audio and HDMI.
Thanks...will let u know how it goes.

You were right. I wasn't able to find LOS 15.1 but did boot 14.1 and though it did reboot on its own twice, it did finally load. It was however very slow.
I tried it on the TW801 which has 2GB Ram and it was more fluid. Touchscreen did work and so did Wifi. Hdmi audio was the bummer.
I have officially given up installing android on the TW700.....I don't think tje tablet is capable of running it well and even if it did.... HDMI audio will be a lost cause.
Thanks for your help....i appreciate it and at least I did finally got to see android on it.

Wait, how about you try running a standard Linux distribution on it?
You may still need to compile the drivers, however there is a higher chance that things will work properly after running updates and rebooting without any compilations.
I tried ubuntu live...slow on the 700 better on the 801. I ordered an Android box..... should receive it today. Lol

Why such an old version?
18.04 has a much newer kernel (I think 4.14 or 4.15), and as such, has a much higher chance of working properly with your hardware (you may still need to compile drivers, however it's not too hard when people have already prepared the code and instructions for you), plus, it uses GNOME rather than Unity (which is discontinued by Canonical), which is at version 3.28, a release that brought many optimizations to system resources, so it should run more smoothly.
Also, when installed, it'll be be much faster, since the internal NAND is much faster than a USB drive, partly because of the fact that it ustilizes the SATA protocol, rather than the USB protocol, and partly because the chip is just way faster.
I thought that my limitation is the poor processor and the RAM. If I had a celeron it would fly.
These tablets are only good for the operating system they came with from the factory.

While an Atom processor is certainly no fun (I have an old Dell Inspiron mini 1018, so I know how it feels), it can be faster than you think.
That old laptop (it was also my first laptop) has a single core Atom CPU, from the N series (the N455), and I was running it with Windows 7.
While it does not have an OS right now (I accidentally broke the keyboard connector on the motherboard while testing RAM sticks for work (I volunteered to do this), and salvaged the hard drive for my desktop (I have 12 hard drives, and 10 trays, 2 of which are are for 2.5" drives. The hard drives were all, save for one, which was bought second hand together with the computer (the case was bought seperately), salvaged from old PCs that people had thrown away), it runs alright on Ubuntu (and slightly better on Solus), however you have a quad-core Atom, which also generates less heat (so less throttling), so it will run much better.
I am not saying that the OS will fly, after all, it does not have a core i3 CPU, however it will outperform your expectation.
Thanks. Today I can't wait to get home to the Android box being delivered.
When I get some time....i will try to load 18.04 and report back. Thanks again.
