I just installed the latest DCD Rom, and so far it is excellent. Which GPS program are you guys running?
I particularly like Google Maps and Microsoft Live Search for just general playing, but those don't talk to you and give directions.
For that, I don't think there are any free options.
I downloaded the free Nav4All from here: http://www.nav4all.com It's apparently an older program, but does have turn-by-turn and voice. It took a while, but now it sees my internal GPS. I haven't tried it on a trip yet though.
Personally I like iGuidance best, text-to-speech and easiest to get around and use. My wife has a tom tom and i just installed it to try, no text-to-speech, cant move the map around without going through several clicks to get to "browse map," although you can change the voice and get cool voices, but id rather have the other stuff. The bad about iGuidance, it takes a little to get it to work on here and its not as smooth as it was with my BT GPS, still have to ry tom tom to compare.
EDIT: so i went out and used tom tom, nice. worked a little smoother than iGuidance and liked the graphics but I really missed the TTS. Hopefully iGuidance can put out a fix fo the com port issue

How did you make (assist) it in finding the internal GPS. It keeps failing on me.

You have to have a program such as google maps running in the backround with gps active. Nav4All doesn't look for the internal gps automatically which is dumb as hell.
I'm using TomTom. Doesn't use data like Qoogle Maps and Live Search do.
I am using Odyssey Mobile with great results. They give you a fourteen day trial so far no problem.

I am using the trial version of Odyssey Mobile as well. It seems to be working, is accurate, and is cheap.

TomTom most certainly does have speech...but it is not set by default. You must select a voice (make sure to install some if you didn't already) and then it will speak all turns and alerts to you.

Those are pre-recorded voices.
What we're discussing is voice synthesis, where the app actually READS THE STREET NAMES.
Example: "Turn left at ramp to sunrise highway in 300 feet" instead of "Turn left in 300 feet"
Make navigating much easier to follow!
On that note, I use the excellent (and sadly discontinued) Mapopolis. Its nothing to look at, but reads text and can see the internal gps.

Its the TTS as Dishe said, makes driving so much better, never knew id miss it till i tried it without it. hopefully iGuidance will have a better work around soon...maybe once there is an official sprint release
Ditto on Odyssey Mobile! Great program and easy to use. Like the graphics and speech!
When I downloaded and installed, it said 3 day trial period, however the Website stated it was a 14 day trial period! Hmmm... Guess I'll find out which it is...
but odyssey is still pre-recorded voice, isn't it?
I tried that nav4all thing... gawd that's terrible. worst UI I've ever seen. Its free, but totally not worth it. Better off using Google maps and skipping the turn-by-turn updates entirely.
Odyssey looks nice, and is resonably priced, but the reviews I read on it placed as a middle of the road app. Price aside, there's no advantage to it over Tom Tom. If only mapopolis were still in business... no one appreciated how ahead of their time that app was!
I've had nothing but problems with the Odyssey. Failed install, locks up, black screen. Works one out of every ten tries. When it did work it was pretty sweet though. Only reason I keep trying.

Just tried this it works. Basically log into Facebook on a Blackberry and get push notifications. I know we all hate Facebook works on android but if you want a notification instantly when someone contacts you, try this.

You should change it to "making facebook notifications work" I did that yesterday I though it was interested and for some reason so far is working, even tho i have been getting most of my notifications on my evo 3d already
If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d

Np man, my friend went to the sprint store to do it in a store demo and it worked lol
If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d
I read about this and thought about trying it. It's always annoyed me that I never got any facebook notifications, because I thought I was supposed to...ya know?
...but the more I thought about it the more I realised how irritating it would be to actually get all of my facebook notifications in my notification bar...and how much more annoying it would be to have a notification sound to go with it....and I don't even have a huge friend list...
Even though notifications was a huge problem with fb app, its still not that useful of an app compared to like bb or ios versions. Ive found friendcaster works way better nd always shows notifications and takes u directly to the appropriate place in the app. It does forward u to the touch or mobile site for a few things here nd there but overall way ahead of official app!

I like friendcaster a bit better than the standard app as well. Still, it could be much better.
Haha...this is funny because I posted these exact same findings on another Android site (the "Central" one) last Friday, August 5th and by Sunday the mods had tested it, put up a video, shot it to the front page and made a Sticky of it in the Applications forum. I can tell you that it works. Facebook for Android basically piggy backs on the Blackberry for Android permissions. There's approximately about 95% functionality with this. One of the things that doesn't work correctly for example are Poke notifications. You get the push notification but when you click on that particular one nothing happens. It's a very minor issue in my book.
What is this Facebook?
Don't worry guys, After Nov 5 Facebook is no more.

My recent phone history: BB Curve>BB Tour>HTC Hero>HTC EVO 4G>Samsung Epic>HTC EVO3D
I just checked and I still have the BB permissions on my FB Account Setting and I'm not getting push notifications.
I will try to sign in on a BB when I get access to one because I remember getting push notifications on my Hero when I had it, which was directly after I had the Tour.
Anyone know how to get rid of the "Select a Wi-Fi network if you would prefer to run the app over Wi-Fi" screen?
I have to press "Do not use Wi-Fi every time and it's pretty annoying.
The only way I know how to get rid of it right now is to completely disable Wi-Fi.

Then disable wifi. Not sure why you'd have it going in the background eating power if you're not actually using it for something.

Thanks. But I was asking if there was a way to get rid of that dialog.
I know I could disable Wi-Fi, I even mentioned it in my first post.
But driving to the local Subway by my work place for my lunch break, I don't want to have to disable it and re-enable it for an hour.
If there is no way to do it, then a "No, there isn't a way" would've sufficed.

I'm going to assume you're either on uberBAMF or a Gingeritis ROM. I believe Chingy and TeamBAMF have attempted to address that issue, but to what success I'm not sure. Might check out themikmik.com threads for an answer or tool to fix it. That's the best I can tell ya. I never use public wifi because it's always slower than LTE.

Thanks, I'll check it out.
I tend to use Wi-Fi at my work place to help from burning my battery too quick.
I'm not even on the phone while at work anyway, so sitting idly there with wifi on is a bit better than sitting idly with 4G.
Although I will be installing in a juice defender type app to do some battery testings later.
Hopefully it will help.

I'm not a big fan of task and feature killers. I consistently see a projection of over 40 hours standby on LTE with mine using none of that stuff. Additionally, they tend to hurt performance. I'd be more prone to just dropping a wifi widget someplace. Just my thoughts...

Yeah, I'm just doing some testings to see if it helps any.
Logically, I would think it does help, since while my screen is off, the data is disabled.
But who knows, there might be something within the app itself that's draining the battery life even more.
Thanks for your feedbacks!

Just from experience, some chat clients are simply abusive when it comes to data use. Yahoo was one of them for me. I also try to very rigidly control when certain things sync or update. Seldom used email accounts update once, maybe twice, a day. Weather only every 6 hours instead of EVERY time the widget is viewed which is the default setting. A lot of the sync setting are WAY more frequent than I think they need to be... the information just doesn't change that much. And it's largely stuff you'll never notice it not doing. Also, I underclock my bottem end CPU speeds and undervolt them to the limit. My phone spends the VAST majority of it's time at or below 245MHz, sipping .8volts or less.
I use IM+ Pro and FriendCaster for Facebook.
I do not let FriendCaster ever do any syncing, however, since I don't even check that thing too much and when I do, I can manually sync it myself.
Other than those two, I use Gmail which is on autosync and Moxier Mail for my corporate email which is on direct push mode.
Since we're on the subject, would you know if direct push burns battery unnecessarily also?
I'm not certain how push works, but do not want to put it on auto polling every 3 hours or something.

Real push email service shouldn't need polling at all. The entire idea behind push email service, as basically invented by RIM, is that a remote server serves as a proxy user to your account and allows you remote access through that service. As a result, nothing is sent to your device until the remote service has something to send. I'm not familiar with your email app or setup through the corporate account, but if it's actually real push email, it's the best possible setup to preserve battery life. Real push email service is one of the few sports BlackBerry can still say they own the game. Everything else is just pretending REAL hard, but the harder it pretends, the harder it tends to be on your battery too.

And what do they do?
What apps can you absolutely not live without on your phone?
1.) Twitter - Social networking that needs no explination
2.) Facebook - Social networking that needs no explination
3.) Titanium Back Up - Backs up all my apps
4.) Chrome 2 Phone - Streams PC chrome pages to phone's browser
5.) Shazam - Music Tagging app
6.) Polaris Office - Best office client I've found for a mobile device
7.) Set-CPU - Allows overclocking of your device if your kernel supports it.
8.) SystemAppRemover - Removes bloatware embedded into the phone
9.) Word With Friends - Fun crossword puzzler with friends
10.) Google Music - All your music with none of the space.... *To the cloud!*
I hope this thread will unearth some hidden gem apps and make users more aware of how they can take advantage of their hardware and get more use out of their phones.
Thanks
*BTW... sorry to the mods if threads like this exist already for this phone.*
•Facebook + Messenger - socialize from my couch
•Paper Camera - Takes awesome sketchbook style photos
•Tapatalk - keep track of forums
•Amazon App Store - Free Paid App Of The Day
•Stock Video App - Plays my movies
•Stock Music App - 5.1 Dolby sounds amazing with nice Skullcandy headphones, otherwise pretty basic.
•Cover Art Downloader - gets album art pretty effectively.
• Audio Tagger - let's me edit mp3 files. I'm really ocd about my music being organized.
•Plants vs Zombies - really fun tower defense style game
•News/Weather widget - gives you weather and news topics of your choice, nice 4x1 layout.
That's basically it for me. Really need to invest in Ti Backup still.

whatsapp (best app ever)

music online lite
xda app
the list got longer when i looked at my sexy phone im still missing an rss reader and a reddit app though. hoping someone here mentions a good one
Most of my installed apps are must have . Here's a link to the extensive list I provided someone else with.

I wish people would just post 1 or 2 apps, as huge lists with no explanations are kind of pointless.
With that said, I just got a GS2 and have been trying out some new apps I never bothered with on my Droid 1.
I'm using Plume for Twitter. It seems like the highest rated twitter client, and I can see why. It's really smooth and slick and has a pretty intuitive interface. I'm liking it a lot and see no reason to ever try another Twitter app.
Llama- Ever wanted to try tasker or Locale, or jealous of the Razr's 'smart actions' app, but didn't want to spend money on any of them? This is a free automatic settings manager and so far it seems really powerful. I'm just getting it set up today, so I don't know how well it works in practice, but it seems to be able to do anything the paid apps do if not more. I always wanted to see how one of these apps really worked but didn't want to pay 6 bucks for one like Tasker so I'd say this is worth trying out if you're looking for something like this.

At some point, people just have to give it a closer look and try it themselves. Anything in my list without a brief explanation is self explanatory.

Some of my favorite, less know apps:
MobiReader Pro: a picture OCR, done completely on your phone. Turns the text in the picture to a text document, where I then use...
CopyPaste Pro: to copy that text and move it to QuickOffice, and use Evernote, and bam! Document for my computer.
FourTracks Pro: for the mobile musician - it allows you to record four tracks much in the same way GarageBand allows you to, and using a couple other programs, I can mix, edit, and produce all on my phone.
ROMToolbox: amazing program. It combines many programs into one. Just look it up on Market. It's worth every penny.
WifiKill: a fun, trolling, but useful program. Kills any other devices connected to your wiring. So say your wife or children are using the internet, downloading movies and whatnot, you can use this app to cut them off, and get all that bandwidth back for yourself.
Finally, N64oid: a great N64 emulator. Nuff said.

Should be out soon.
I have a good friend who believes her husband, they are separated and divorcing, has some kind of spyware on her phone. A lot of her claims as far as strange things happening with her phone, seem kind of impossible but her ex was involved in some high level activities in the Military. For one, she says she can factory reset her phone and all the strange things pop back on her phone. The first thing I looked at was what apps on her android were using the most data. I will include a picture of it but I personally have never seen anything like it. Many of the apps that are shown are "restricted".
Now, the app store for example. She claims she never installs new apps or really even looks around on the app store however the data use on it is insane. She also has NO work stuff on here and has no idea what osulogin is. Does anyone have a clue??
osu login is a preinstalled system app.

Turn off wifi. Get off social media. Never leave anyone use your phone out of your sight... if at all.
I doubt the ex would risk his security clearance and job like this. The DOD has a vast array of spyware tools... I've seen some in use.
You upload and scan any app you want to with online Virustotal.
