Force 1X without going to EPST and reset? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

As a battery saving technique I have been in the habit of forcing the radio to radio 1X only (no EV-DO) whenever I know I don't need heavy data usage. This method still allows my exchange server to sync by push, but internet browsing is way slow. So if I am going to need browsing, I switch back to EV-DO.
But to to this, as far as I know, requires going into EPST and changing the Modem Setting Preferred Mode to "CDMA Only".
Unfortunately this method requires a soft reset to make it work which is fine if you don't need EV-DO speed downloads for a few hours/days. But if you want to switch between 1X and EV-DO quickly its not a workable solution.
Does anyone know a method of changing from "1X only" to "EV-DO" and back without going into EPST and without a soft reset?

do you have a 'mode of operation' page under phone settings?
if not, it will show for all carriers on next release...
i can look up the reg to unhide the setting for you when i get home.

Thanks dcd. I was a bit worried about that "Mode of Operation" setting because my phone doesn't have it available. A search through the forums mentioned that setting but because my phone didn't have it I assumed that the titan/WM6.1 didn't support it.
Now that I know it is a reg hack to make it viewable I will have a look in the registry. If I can't find where to change the setting myself I will await your answer.

just search your registry for HiddenModeOperationPage

OK found it.
If anyone else is interested in using "1X only" to save battery power AND the "Mode of Operation" item is missing from Start-->Settings-->Phone-->Services tab then you need to edit the registry using PHM Registry Editor (or similar).
Go to HKLM>Software>OEM>PhoneSetting and then change the the Reg_Dword called HiddenModeOperationPage from value 1 to value 0.
Then you will have the ability to switch between 1X, EV-DO and Hybrid in the phone settings page. There is a warning in the registry that says that if you select EV-DO you will lose the ability to make voice calls (presumably because EV-DO only supports data not voice and data like 1X). Therefore I would assume the options you should choose are really between 1X and Hybrid.
Thanks dcd for the help. Hope it assists anyone else looking to save battery power.

Sprint Roaming Only settings

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\InitProv\PhoneSetting
change the Value Data from 2 to 3. Click OK
Create a New String Value with the name "ItemName3" under Value Data enter "Roaming Only". Click OK
Create a New DWord Value with the name "ItemValue3" and under Value Data enter "3" Decimal. Click OK
now you can navigate to Phone> Options> Settings> Roaming> Get Settings and change it to "Roaming Only".
Good Luck.
If I do not do this and just leave it on automatic, will my phone be able to Roam? I don't want it to always Roam, but if it needs to I want it to be able to. So is it necessary to do this in order to enable roaming completley, or only if you want it to always be roaming?

Automatic will let the phone roam when it needs to, but use Home when it can.
If you soft reboot, these registry changes are removed. Also, data roaming no longer works; it connects but will not send/receive anything. Any solutions for that?
I soft reboot and mine stayed intact. I changed it in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\InitProv\PhoneSetting and in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting\NetworkService though, so you may want to do the same. As far as the data roaming goes, mine dials #777 when I use email/internet. Voice roaming was more important for me as I have a terrible signal at home. DCD mentioned that he might post a registry change .cab for these settings... anyone seen it?

Those are the settings I was using. I'm not sure what my problem is.
I did solve the data roaming issue by running IOTA though . Oops!
Whats weird is that I only needed to change the OEM\InitProv\PhoneSetting
key and not the OEM\PhoneSetting\NetworkService. I have done it this way
on several Moguls. When I changed it in InitProv on soft reset the changes
were made to PhoneSetting\NetworkService.

I've read before that after applying registry changes, you sometimes need to wait a minute or two before soft-rebooting. If you don't wait long enough, the changes somehow get lost when you soft reboot.
I've read that too, and I've tried waiting for up to an hour to no avail. I'll keep working at it.
registry editor?
What registry editor software are you using to get this done? I downloaded a few online but nothing worked :-/ I have a Motorola VE20 with Sprint, trying to modify the registry so the phone can get on roaming as I have very poor reception in my room. Thank you

Schaps Advanced Config Connection Settings Sprint Touch Pro?

I am trying to set up my evdo connection to shut down in 10 min after no use. In Schaps Advanced config under connection settings, the Sprint connection has 3 settings:
Disable
Enabled
Always on
then following that it allows you to set the network time out.
My question is do I want the Sprint setting to be always on or just enabled?
if u do this setup to were it will turn off after a few min then it will change the reg to gprs_standby (or whatever) instead of #777.
while the internet will still work, when u are using your data connection and someone calls you. it wont allow u to pick up the phone. i had this and turned it off for that reason. just alittle fyi
I'm still trying to find out what the different settings mean.
Enabled
Disabled
Always on
I not real concerned about the incoming calls so much while on the internet.
What is the difference between Enabled, and always on?

htc touch pro EVDO hidden setting ?

Hi gurus
i heard that theres a hidden setting in htc touch pro so we can make the evdo keep still and not dropping to 1x
anybody can help we this ?
thanks in advance.....
help..... ..
You can set it up for EVDA only, but where there is no 3G coverage you will get no data at all..... I wouldn't advise on this, keep it on hybrid
If you go to Start->Settings->Personal->Phone, then go the the Services tab, find Mode of Operation in the list and tap Get Settings, you can set it to EVDO only.
Now, keep in mind that your phone has to drop to 1x to receive phone calls and text messages, so while in EVDO only, you won't be able to get those. Also, if you move out of an EVDO coverage area, you will just lose signal completely.
If I recall, this option is not available on Stock ROM. At least, I don't remember seeing it until I installed a custom ROM. If you're on a stock ROM and don't have it, there's probably a Reg hack you can do to get it to show, but someone else will have to help you out on that one, cuz I'm not sure what it would be.
I would just stick to what it is and leave it. Would be better for you.
No 3G coverage = no data
But thats my opinion.
Hidden "mode of operation"
Hey man,trythis; install a registry editor then..HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\HiddenModeOperationPage
Change from 1 to 0
Save and soft reset
After resetting, go to:
Start > Settings > Phone > Services > Mode of operation
You will now have 3 choices, Hybrid (default), EVDO, and 1X. This is great for those stuck on the fringe areas of 1X and EVDO
It works on the Treo pro, might work on yours
its a visible option on my sprint TP with the HTC2.01 ROM

Tip: Improve Battery Life if You Are A Hardcore Texter

So if you're like me you prefer to text somebody instead of call (except the wife/fiancee/gf of course ) and you may notice if you have your data connection on that the phone switches from 3G to 1x briefly then back again. This switching drains the battery a lot. See post 4 for a better way to do it.
What's the difference between doing this and going into wireless settings and turning of 3g data.
Also, you can long press the end call button and turn off mobile data as well...

All turning off the mobile data does is disconnect you from the data completely. This allows you to keep your data but just stay in 1x. I tried it too and it worked beautifully. I texted all day and turned location on and syncing my Gmail on and everything and it does make a difference.

You don't need to reboot anything.
When my battery is getting low, and I have to save it, I just use this for call/text.
Turn off Mobile Network (otherwise it will still connect to internet at 1x, and for MORE time, since it has to mvoe the same data as 3g)
Then get AnyCut from Market (well, turn 3g on for that if you need to get it, lol)
Long-press on home screen
Shortcut
Anycut
Activity
CDMA Call options (the second of the two 'cdma options' lists).
You can change this setting on the fly, just hit 'Mode of Operation' (don't mess with that other stuff unless you want your phone to be useless as a phone)
You DON'T need ##778 to do it, and/or to Reboot.
You just change it on the fly.
Be sure to change it to 'Hybrid' when you want your normal 3g/1x switching to happen. Be aware that whenever you open the CDMA settings >mode of operation that the button will default to 3g Only (as if you selected it before, which you didn't) so be sure to hit 1x only or Hybrid, depending on what you want.
Selecting 3g Only will STOP calls and texts from coming in properly. You have to MAKE a phone call in order for your texts to send, because making a phone call will force your phone to go to 1x.

Dude awesome! First post updated.
Running KaosFroyo V30...
The two 'CDMA Options' lists don't contain the options you describe.
The first of the two CDMA options only had 'roaming select'...
auto/affiliated nets/home
And the second only had 'voice privacy' as an option.
There are no other 'cdma options' in the anycut list....

Talk to punk.kaos about it. Apparently he didn't cook something in his ROM that is needed to do this. It didn't have EPST when I tried it.

[Q] How to avoid 4G / 3G connection?

Since i got my OG, i always have used 3G / 4G connection
but sometimes i want save some battery and use EDGE or GPRS connection as many people here in Brazil does, but i dunno how!
how to do that?
thanks!
-settings
--wireless and networks
---mobile network
----network mode
-----GSM only
that's it
didn't have this "Network mode" in my phone...
some alternative way to do that?
*#*#4636#*#* in dialer, phone info, set to GSM Only.
Sent from my LG-E970
To get the network mode menu you can edit build.prop if you're rooted.
A tool like "Android Tuner Free" makes it easy to backup your build.prop and change it, if you don't already have a favored method.
The entry to change is "ro.radio.networkmode" and it is probably set to "disable". Set it to "enable", reboot your phone, and you will have the network mode menu available. But, I'm pretty sure changes made in this menu revert upon rebooting (maybe that is what the next setting in there, "ro.radio.topreviousmode" is for - I didn't touch it).
