Use Mogul as Analog modem/fax?? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

I have no problem using internet connection sharing/tethering, but I'm curious if it's also possible to use the phone as a modem. An analog modem that dials out, not a EVDO modem.
I don't have any land lines in my house and it'd be nice to hook this thing up to fax on occasional. Yes, I know there are other services.
Thanks!

I recall seeing a thread where someone used their pda to dial in to an ISP to connect to a network and was charged an outrageous amount for data. Now I do believe they didn't have a data package and that might have been why they were charged. Not sure if that is applicable here but I thought I would give the heads up.

Have you tried this?

I also remember using one from MarkSpace software back in the day.

What good is the WiFi Connection

The WiFi connection on this phone is worthless. You turn it on, it finds an access point but it still uses the phones cellular connection to browse the internet or any other data related app. What is the point of this thing?
no it does not.
Thanks for the reply GeLopez but it sure seems that way. I because regardless if I am connected to an access point or not the Internet is still slow.

Try turning Wi-fi off then go into start/settings/connections/connections settings. Pick the advanced tab/select networks. Try different combinations to achieve the desired results depending on how and what you are using the PPC to connect to. Now ok out of everything and turn Wi-fi on, now connect to your access point. Should work now. Let me know.
I will be out of the country for a few days beginning tomorrow, and wi-fi is going to be essential for me to avoid roaming charges. With wi-fi and Skype, I've got connectivity anywhere in the world.
I only use my WiFi and never use Carrier data.
Works like a charm.
Is there a setting that needs to be set. I can connect with any local wireless hotspot with this phone and the internet traffic on the phone is as slow as just using the carrier data network.

Check under Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections -> Wifi -> Adapters. Make sure that the connections are set to The Internet and not to Work. Also, make sure your wifi connection in there is set to accept a server-based ip address.
Thanks for the advice, I will give it a try.
I hope you get the wifi working for you. I use it all of the time and would be lost without it. I would not have purchased this phone if it was without.
Complain with sprint
I WAS GETTING THE SAME THING, I WOULD CONNECT AT HOME USING WIFI, BECAUSE I DIDNT HAVE A INTERNET PLAN, AND THE FIRST MONTH I GOT A HUGE BILL. I COMPLAINED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR UNTILL I GOT TO THE TECH GUYS, NEVER GET SATISFIED WITH WHAT THE CUSTOMER REP TELL YOU, HES GANNA TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE TO PAY NO MATTER WHAT, JUST KEEP PUSING AND ASKING TO SPEAK WITH A MANAGER, ONCE YOU GET TO THAT GUY HE SHOULD SET THINGS STRAIGHT.
FIRST, HE CANCELED MY CHARGE FOR INTERNET USE.
2ND, I WAS GIVEN FULL UNLIMITED INTERNET ACCESS FOR LIFE. (ALONG WITH A OFFICIAL CERTIFICATE BACKING UP THE FREE INTERNET INCASE YOU EVER GET CHARGED FOR ANY INTERNET RELATED FEE.)
iM PERTY SHURE I COULD OF KEPT PUSHING IT AND GET MORE OUT OF IT, BUT FREE INTERNET FOR LIFE WAS A PERTY SWEET DEAL. THATS A 100$ MONTHLY FEATURE FREE.
heres what i did.
first i complained about the fact that the wifi, was a feature of the phone htc, not sprint. why should i be charged for using my own wifi. Dell doesnt charge me when i connect their laptop with my wifi at home. why are you?
i specificly rememberd i also said " the wifi is not for you to be charging, it is not a service that you offer it comes with the phone, so does this mean that your going to charge me, everytime i create a word doccument, every time i play solitare, everytime i take a picture with the phone camera? thats just redicolous, you have no right to charge me for a feature that the phone offers, it has absoloutly nothing to do with sprint.!"
I bet you backup your claim, they will give you stuff too.

I bet the whole deal was your fault. I bet you used the data connection instead of the wifi connection. Because it is impossible for them to track your wifi usage. You let the dialup data connection go thru with is the default connection and rang up the huge bill.
You are the reason there are mandatory data plans with PPC and why our service gets more expensive.

Exactly what I was thinking. Good work on screwing Sprint out of their money somehow though. The customer service rep you were talking to must've been retarded.

Sprint Airave and internet speed

Hello everyone,
I just recently received a sprint airave, free of charge. I don't necessarily need it...and the story of how why they sent it is a long one. Anyway, I usually get 25 up and 4-5 mps down with my ISP. I just moved and love the speed compared to my old ISP. I don't want to sacrifice any speed. So my question is, will the sprint airave reduce my downloads or uploads? Is there a certain way to install it to prevent any reduction in speed?
Thanks
No, it does not effect your speeds, even if it does, you wouldn't even notice it. I have an Airrave from sprint, but in my opinion it is not that great, sometimes it does not play well with HTC phones. Every once in a while you will have to tell sprint to reset it to work properly.
Hope that summary gave you the answer you were looking for.

I set one up at our office at work. I think it works very well. Only problem I have with it I will set certain sprint #'s to access it but if I ever reset it some #'s I put in will just vanish off and I have to go in and redo it. I just recently set it to accept all phones cause I was sick of updating the listing. Also will have issues with hand-offs sometimes from the device to the tower it can dump the call.
They tell you to put the device in front of the modem so it is in charge of your network. That wasn't gonna happen with me, it works just fine behind a router I just have QOS enabled for it & some vonage boxes it works just find. I can't tell that it uses any bandwidth then again we have a 40/5 connection so there is plenty to go around. It will increase your 3G speeds a lot but I still use wi-fi. One of our guys has a pixie which doesn't have wi-fi so the repeater is great for that. As long as you have a decent connection your never gonna notice a difference.

If im remembering right, there are some pretty complicated issues with handoff between cell towers and femtocells (like the airave)
Sometimes you will have to dial "*99" in order to find out if you are the airave or tower. Hope you have better luck.

Did I fry my radio circuit, or is the evo3d inferior to my wife's evoshift radio?

So here goes...
I'm on travel for the holidays, and we arrive in a backwoods Vermont town, then suddenly I lose cell signal, no biggie, this is usually expected in Vermont, but since we bring along our Wilson 45dbm cell booster, I usually regain my signal to full bars as soon as we turn it on (no matter where we are). I just thought that maybe the tower in the area was down from the snow we just got.
I thought nothing of it, until when we arrived at out destination and then I notice my phone still had no signal. At my suggestion a few years ago, I convinced the family we visited to invest in a Wilson home booster, which my wife currently has no problem picking up a signal from.
So this got me thinking, well maybe my PRL file was outdated/updated and the cell tower is not in my list. So I notice my wife has version 60690, and I had version 21090. Wow this must be really really old I thought, so I followed instructions using QPST and upgraded mine to the same version as my wife's. Still nothing, no signal what-so-ever.
Then I noticed that Sprint is upgrading their network and this meant that the newest version numbers were in the range of what I had on my phone originally, and now I think someone said 21092 is the absolute latest for the Evo 3D. So with this said, maybe I need to update my PRL to 21092, problem is I can't without a signal, and so far no one has posted it on any site yet. Anyone have the latest PRL file that I could try?
Then today I got to thinking that maybe the problem started at the car ride with the booster. Did my booster output too much power that it fried my radio? The car booster uses a stick-on antenna, not the direct to phone connector cable, so I don't see how it could have over saturated the radio, but now I am second guessing that notion. Or maybe, could my phone have a different radio than my wife's phone? I'm sure my evo3d was working the last time I was here in Vermont, but I'm not 100% certain it was the same phone.
So with this said, how can someone verify that the radio is shot? I've tried entering field trial mode using ##33284# to see if there is even a signal dbm level being reported, which it seems to see something because it does fluctuate.
Attached are some photos. Thanks!
For prls on the 3d I run the sprint corporate prls. I believe the latest we have on xda is 12126. The benefit of these is that when roaming it gives full 3g on the Verizon network as opposed to your 21xxx prl that only gives 1x. These prls I believe are distributed to customers in corporate accounts with sprint. I've been running 12124 with no problem s, I just haven't updated yet. I'm pretty sure there's a thread in the general section on this. I'm on tapatalk or I'd link you. Anyways, I doubt you fried anything... I've loaded the prl you did before and it didn't pull any signal for me either on my 3d... I have no clue what the difference is though.

I have no idea what your problem is but just wanted to say that I love the title of your thread. Sounds like a country and western song to me.
ramjet73
I forgot to add that this is a US Cellular tower that shows up as roaming on the sprint network. It's my understanding that prl files list roaming towers only, so it would seem to imply that something is wrong with the prl file. But then why does my wife's phone work when mine doesn't using the same prl. Anyhow, maybe I will try a corporate prl for giggles, just to see if it still even works. Thanks for the suggestion, I will try it soon and let you know!
Oh and thanks for the country song title idea, I should have had more fun with that one!

Thanks p3tr0s, I think I used the corporate PRL you suggested and after QPST rebooted the phone, I still had no signal. But somewhere in between going into my ICS >Settings>Mobile networks and toggling all the Domestic/Roaming/Guards and setting them back (even though this still did not give me signal), then going into >Settings>Usage and toggling Mobile Network suddenly my phone finally connect to the cell tower. Immediately after a good connection, I did a PRL update (in >Settings>System updates), and now it is using the latest 21092 PRL and it is still working just fine, so now I'm totally confused. I'm thinking that the issue was resolved somehow with the toggles. Even though I had tried toggling the Usage mobile setting and a couple of the data options on previous PRL's, I hadn't tried toggling all of them in the Mobile networks area as I did this time. But, then again, this is the first time I have gotten a signal, so maybe the combination of the corporate PRL worked is some weird way. Thanks!

FIXED: No Handoff to Airave for Voice

Preface: About 3-4 months ago I had issues with the phone not locking to the airave for voice calls, but I could see the mobile light (on the airave) flash for data/3g transmissions. Spent a number of hours with airave tech support trying many different things include phone profile refresh, airave profile refresh, prl updates, factory reset, and some other things. None of these helped the situation. Then, about 2 or 3 weeks later everything worked properly all of a sudden. The 3 beeps returned to my inbound/outbound calls when within the airrave's proximity (indicating call is being routed through it rather than an actual tower).
Observations
After some testing on my end, I discovered several things when this issue was occurring.
From the ##debug#/field trail screen (you need sense for this). I was seeing the following:
http://db.tt/Ql4796Iu
When the phone used to work with the airrave for voice, my sid/nid was 4384/502.
When the issue is present, the phone locks onto sid 22439/120 . By all accounts, this sounded very much like a PRL issue more than anything else. The PRL of the airave had a lower priority than this new SID.
I made a post about this issue on s4gru.com. Shortly after, digiblur (our prl expert) joined the discussion and things made alot more sense. (See this thread for the discussion http://tinyurl.com/ayhk79j )
The solution was obvious, an entry to the prl had to be made that gave the airave greater priority than the 22439 sid, but only acted on one particular NID (502 ---- which appears to be consistent to all airaves, regardless of geographic region). So at this point, I knew what had to be done, but not quite how to do it. Digiblur made a very nice how to guide in the post above - see post #16.
Unfortunately, I never got a chance to actually try this out because sid 22439 was turned off and modifying the prl was no longer needed.... Until now!
About a week ago the issue resurfaced and no more airave for voice calls.
FIX:
*WARNING*: Use at your own risk, all typical and usual disclaimers of flashing anything/everything applies here. If you brick your phone, you can't hold me liable.
1) Pull existing PRL from phone
Unlike the old evo, we can't easily upload a prl to the new evo 4g lte by simply referencing a prl file from the dialer. The process is a bit more convoluted
A) Place phone into diag mode -- ##DIAG# in a sense dialer
B) You may need some new drivers http://db.tt/zc4HIsJK, use proper version for x86/x64. May have to manually force the driver.
C) Download the free version of DFS from http://www.cdmatool.com/
D) After installing and running the program (run as admin), select the proper port next to ports. It will say HTC DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE COMx. Where x is some number.
E) Provide your 6 digit MSL code next to the box label SPC, then click on SPC to submit it to the phone. In the DFS LOG window, it will say "DEVICE UNLOCKED".
F) Just below where the MSL code was entered, click on PROGRAMMING, and just below that, NAM.
G) At the far right of the NAM window is the tool to manipulate the PRL.
Select READ to read it from the phone, then SAVE to save it to a file.
2) Modifying the PRL
You will need some tool to actually make the edits. I Used QPST's PRL editor.
Follow Digiblur's insturctions below - note, due to new prl's, the line numbers have changed, but the concept is the same.
ref: http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/2...-but-not-voice/page__view__findpost__p__60555
Ok... here's what you want to do. Scroll down to 465. This should be the 22439 SID record with the Geo set to New. This is the first record in your geographic area. Right Click on the 95(A,B)1x system type of this record. Don't change it, just right click on it and hit insert record. This should push 22439 down one record.
Now look at 4384, it should be on record 473 now. Let's use this as a model for our new record.
1.On the blank #465 record, change it to 95(A,B)/1x.
2.Change Neg/Pref to Pref (if you put Neg, this tells your phone not to use this)
3.Geography is going to be New (will change the one below it in a few)
4.Priority will be More (means this record has more priority than the next one)
5.Acq Index will be the same as 4384 (tells it which channels to scan), should be 14.
6.Roam Indicator should be a 1 (1 = Sprint, 160 = US roaming icon, 228 = international roaming)
7.Assn Incl Should be Yes since we want EVDO
8.Assn Tag will be 16 to use the value 16 flagged records in this Geo for EVDO.
9.Pn Assn should be No
10.Data Assn should be No
11.SID should be 4384
12.NID should be 502.
Now very important, don't forget this. On record 466 (22439 SID) you need to change the Geo to Same.
I would also change the Preferred Roaming List ID at the top to something like 25996 or something weird so you can check your settings/about screen from time to time as Sprint will automatically update your PRL sometimes.
So basically what happens now is when your phone does a network scan it looks for 4384/502 (your airave) first. If it can't find it, it looks for the 22439 on 800SMR, if it can't find that it will look for the 4384/65535.
I haven't tested this as I have no way of testing it in my area so please let me know if this works. In theory it should work though.

Here's what the finished product looks like on PRL 25010, line 460 was added.
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/9894/prly.png
3) Uploading the modified PRL
A) Referring back to step 1G above, simply load the modified prl into the DFS tool, then click write to submit to the phone.
B) Exit diag mode in the phone by pressing MENU, DISABLE
C) Reboot the phone
NOTE: If you don't have QPST or don't want to go through the hassle of modifying your own PRL, below is the modified one. It's based on PRL 25010; I call it 25011.
25011.PRL http://db.tt/wk9muM1j
So now, when at home, the phone locks to the airave for voice, and either LTE, wifi, or 3G (via airave) for data. Also, it transitions properly too. When the airave is unplugged, phone locks back onto SID 22439. When the airave is again available, phone locks back to it.
Although my particular signal level is acceptable when on the 22439 sid, the airave signal is obviously much stronger. A side benefit is better battery life.
So if I have an airave I can just change my PRL to 25011 using QPST or do I have to follow all the steps above?
BD, I wouldn't do anything unless you're having the issue I was.
Yea I have not had many problems with my Airave until last night the mobile light was flashing for hours it finally went green on it's own, may have just been a Sprint thing who knows and thanks for your reply
Flashing trying to establish a connection, or flashing because maybe someone else was locked on to it... Did you get the usual 3 beeps when making a call?
My issue came to be mainly after LTE was lit up around here. That's when I started noticing the phone connecting to that strange 22439 sid and handoffs to the airave were flaking out.
To be honest I was told when someone connected to the Airave there was a beep but... mine has never beeped even when I make a call. So maybe I have it hooked up wrong. My setup is modem to router to Airave. I had it modem to Airave to router before but I noticed my internet was slowing down could be all in my head but after I changed it my speeds went up
The three beeps I refer to are heard on the HANDSET's earpiece. Not from the airrave itself. The flashing top light (Mobile light) flashes during the device's init process and whenever there is a voice/data connection in use.
As for hooking up, modem - router - airave should be fine. Considering how much grief it's caused, I don't trust it to function as a router. In fact, I have a dedicated lan port on my wrt54g that separates the airave onto it's own subnet so it's completely isolated from the rest of my network.
Ok I was wondering why all of a sudden my phone would beep when I made a call hahaha thanks for clearing that up
I was having the same problem... So I called sprint and they sent me a new 2.5 airave. 2 days later perfect connection and faster 3g... Cost for me - $0.00
^^How did you describe your problem to them?
I told 'em mine would work for data but not voice.
They never offered to swap it out for me. Too late now.

2.5 airrave?? I'm curious which one that is, i have a tall white one, my evo 3d would connect fine but the evo connects sometimes and usually it wont, also when my phone has lte (at home) it randomly drops to 3g or 1x and does a dance...

Thanks!
I stumbled across this thread after a frustrating 3 days, and 8+ hours on the phone with Airave support. I don't have an Evo, but I do have a Galaxy S3 and was experiencing similar problems. My GS3 would not connect to the Airave 2.5 at all. They suggested replacing my handset (for a refurb, nonetheless), but I was convinced it had to be something else.
After installing your modified PRL, it works perfectly. I connect to the Airave with no problem for voice every time.
Thank you! :good:
The prl i linked in the OP is a bit outdated at this point, but the technique is still good. Grab a current prl from one of the prl threads and just apply the change.
Attached is a modified 16013 prl. I renamed it to 16913 .
After downloading just rename to 16913.prl, it's not an actual zip file.
You an also dial *99 it will now connected to air rave coverage

@gpz1100, two questions. First, I have done this yet my phone will still randomly prefer anything over my airave. Using the modded PRL used to work but about 2 weeks ago quit. When I say anything, Sprint PCS, Sprint 1xA or even Verizon. Been through all the support stuff, went back to stock PRL and activation. Thoughts??
Second, when I use DFS to read the PRL and then save it, the PRL file is 0 bytes. I can load up a saved PRL file and write it to the phone no problem so the basics have been covered. This would be a S3.
It seems you've left the big S though.
1) Need to where in the PRL you've added the airave sid/nid combo. Location makes a difference because entries at the top have greater priority than those at the bottom. Use a tool like cdma field test tool to determine where you're actually connecting. Then see where that SID is in the prl relative to your airrave sid.
2) Something is wrong, are you unlocking the device properly before reading the prl? Perhaps you need to use a 16 digit password to read the prl? I'm not familiar with the s3, so you'll get little help there. Maybe check in the s3 section to see what's required to successfully read a prl.
3) I am officially done with sprint. Good riddance. Going on over a month now on a big red mvno. Data much improved over sprint.

I actually went to the last entry in the previous Geo and over-wrote that with SID 4418 NID 501 which are what my Airave is transmitting on. I made that entry "new" for the Geo I'm in and changed the previous first Geo entry to same. Digiblur suggested I see what channel my Airave was transmitting on to make sure the channel was in the the acq record for me Geo. That channel was not so I added it. From then things were great until about 2 weeks ago. Since then it seems several people are having problems connecting to the Airave's.
The device gets unlocked, I get message indicating so in the DFS log.
I dunno. Frustrating.
Ok so I too had this issue with my evo4g lte not connecting to my new airave 2.5. I called airave customer support and after trouble shooting some things the tech finally pushed a new prl to my phone and all was taken care of. I am using prl 61096. He said if my phone tried to update the prl automatically I would loose the ability to connect to my airave so I just switched back to cm10.2 after I hung up the phone with them and I haven't had an issue with it yet.
If you don't have a need for huge data consumption, and verizon has good coverage in your area, come to the darkside - prepaid... Even save a few bucks!
@SleepyS40, you are very lucky you got a competent tech who understood why it wasn't connecting. Those are few and far between (competent techs that is). Had you remained on sense, sprint could potentially push a prl update automatically.

SM-G965U hotspot issues on Metro after leaving Boost.

I really hope I can get some timely help. This site has given me a lot of solutions in the past. The gears of war 5 tech test ends tomorrow and this happened yesterday in the middle of a game...
My s9plus is unlocked for any carrier. Bought it back in January for $150 and it initially was in Verizon. I got with boost and my hotspot always worked using the dun trick when making a new apn. About a month and a half ago, boost forced my phone randomly to connect to a tower that was less efficient. I went from 70mbps down and 10mbps up and 5bar signal to 6mbps down and less than 1 mbps up. My bar strength was at a constant 2/3 and the connection would constantly fluctuate, but I was still able to use the hotspot if I could find a spot in my home the connection would work.
Boost wouldnt correct this issue, and after all the troubleshooting with no solution, I switched to metro a few days ago. No part of me was concerned I would be losing something doing this. I had no clue, but assumed it would be fine.
My connection is 5 bars, lte, speeds are not what I hoped but upload speed is very solid. However, the hotspot will no longer connect my devices to the internet. I only use my xbox one and although it will connect to the hotspot, it will not share the internet. I spent a few hours trying to do several things, including using adb shell to change the dun value to 0. I would appreciate any advice, because where I live has no internet options and I'm freaking out as this was all I had and now its not working despite me doing everything right. I even tried using pdanet and making my computer a hotspot, but a double nat on my xbox isnt enough to let me connect to games, just gives me about 5mbps down and 1 mbps up.

I would contact your provider and ask to make sure that your phone is compatable with all of the services they have.
Because it is a Verizon phone originally (and even though network unlocked) it may not be able to connect to Metro's systems if it is using verizon's configuration for hotspot. If customer service confirms that a BYOD can use hotspot features, your phone is compatable, your line is properly configured for (and is actually supposed to have) hotspot data access then perhaps try flashing the firmware for MetroPCS and see if that helps. I know that my sprint phone had some stuff on it that was configured for Sprint so it would have never worked even after network unlocking and using a different provider. Flashing the phone with T-Mobile firmware solved that problem...

I should clarify that I did have access, I just hit the data cap. None of the steps I used helped me to use my hotspot after the data limit for metro

So you hit a hotspot data cap with MetroPCS and you want to bypass/circumvent that so you can continue to use the hotspot?
If the above is correct then you essentially won't get any help here because of what your asking to do..
Whether or not anyone agrees/disagrees with the data cap you paid for a service that gives you a set amount of gigabytes for hotspot use. Attempting to bypass/circumvent that data cap so you can use more then what was included in the service can be construed as theft.
Either purchase additional buckets of data for use, wait until the data cap resets or find a better provider that offers you a larger (or unlimited) amount of data for use with hotspot functionality.

I could post atleast 10 other threads on xda specifically showing people how to do what I'm asking, but I'm not really asking for your permission my friend, just anyone's advice if they know why I was never affected on boost when using dun in my apn, but dun and adb shell editing didnt work with metro, and what I could do about it.

While it maybe true other threads on the subject, that doesn't mean they (or you) are in the right either. I was just stating a fact that what your trying to do can be construed as theft.
Within regards to why you essentially won't get much help here because of what your trying to do, I should have been more clear on the meaning behind that. Essentially the problem is how the provider detects and/or handles hotspot data. In this case it is obvious that MetroPCS has a different method for handling and/or detecting hotspot data use then Boost Mobile. I am not sure if anyone here would have the technical insight on what one does over the other as far as hotspot data... Granted it is always a possibility someone does, but I haven't seen many posts that indicate discussions go into those kinds of discussions.
I am poking around on the internet to see if I can find something that gives more technical details on how MetroPCS and Boost deal with hotspot data. Given that I currently have a severe thunderstorm in my area I don't know how much I can get accomplished before the power goes out (it's a pretty nasty storm).
