Im seeing allot of ROMs in the ftp but Im not really to sure of which one to choose.
what is your favorite ROM?
cheers
no one?
Does this mean everyone is changing their Rom's without knowing the direct advantages? that seems rather risky
See wiki page Upgrading for beginners:
Please do NOT ask which is the best ROM for you, the Hermes upgrading forum is flooded with this question and we can't really give you an answer: a ROM upgrade is only as good as the comments it has received from the users on the forums, see the top right column of the Shipped Complete Updates table for each ROM's forum link.

I had a quick look at that list and I noticed that there isn't a ROM for T-Mobile. So what ROM do I have installed on my MDA Vario II?
Also, on my old Wizard I had the Molski ROM installed which seemed to work quite nicely. Are there similar custom ROMs out there. Or are these less common due to the better spec of the Hermes not requiring such customisations?
cooked roms on the hermes still not exists, the bootloader checks signature of the rom updates and it must be signed with proper HTC key... not possible to flash a cooked rom until we can circumvent this.
My 2 pence... use the latest ROM from your carrier if possible. It will generally have better radio/data performance on their network. Also, you'll get the roaming/not-roaming intelligence. This, for example, allows you to set up different sync schedules in certain software based upon roaming which is important in my travels. I don't want push email chewing up data when I'm off network.
Thanks for the info. I thought there would be a good reason!
Hey guys, before I start I'd like to make it known I've searched high and low and couldn't seem to find a clear answer. so hopefully I can find some answer for not only myself, but a few other members here as well. I have a few friends with the sprint mogul and my girlfriend just got the verizon 8700. I'm always telling them about these cooked roms and that's mainly the reason they ran out and got smart phones. there's only one problem. I can't seem to find any cooked roms for the sprint and verizon phones. I've learned from the hermes forums...that even though its branded different...the roms should still work the same on either one. So i'm guessing its the exact same way. keeping that in mind, I should be able to flash any of the roms here...like the DC rom. Am I correct? will it work? If so, my next question is, phone settings. I'm a gsm dude, so i'm not really familiar with any procedures you guys have to go through for your phone settings an internet settings. Are they any cab files available for sprint and verizon that I can install and have the phone up and running? Thanks for any and all help in advance guys.
can anyone help? or atlease point me in the right direction?

thank you much for the response.
Unfortunately, most of the XDA-devs forum deals with mainly GSM phones with users based all over the world (it at least appears to me that US posters is almost a minority on this site).
CDMA devices (Sprint, VZ, Alltel, etc) are huge in the US, but not as popular over seas. In fact, when the Sprint Mogul (6800/titan) was released, XDA originally did not want to make a section for it, claiming that the phone would not be popular enough to discuss amongst other forum members. I joined a group of people who petitioned the moderators to add a section, and clearly they eventually did. However, CDMA devices are discussed at length over at a similiar forum, www.ppcgeeks.com
Personally, I think XDA is a larger and more knowledgable community, so its really a shame that more of the developments aren't happening here. There are a few really good devs that have made the move here (such as DCD, his work is fantastic), and more and more people are finding that they prefer the moderation of XDA over PPCgeeks, but the fact still remains that more development happens over there. For example the "official" kitchens for the CDMA phones are released over there. You'll find many more ROM options (some good, some bad) as well as tutorials and details of the flashing process.
I personally try to be actively involved in both forums. Its the only way to stay on top of the state of the art.

thanks for the reply dcd and Dishe. i'll be hanging tight for that verizon rom. i did go over to ppcgeeks...i dont really like over there too much. for some reason alot of things look a little less serious. i wasn't able to find any roms either. but i did see some good info on the device itself.
Can anybody direct me to a change log or revision history for the different Titan radio versions? Or if anybody knows the differences from 3.35 - 3.39?
I'd be most appreciative.
thanks
your best bet is checking the wiki here and reading the individual threads. you do bring up a good point because that wiki page needs more data.
any idea what benefit I would get from upgrading my radio to 3.39 from 3.35? Would it stop GPS from locking up periodically?

Unfortunately none are sure and I've only heard a few personal anectdotes. Beyond knowing the 3.35.10 and later radios being for the GPS ROMs (exclude the leaked 3.27 build) and all previous 1.xx-2.xx for earlier ROM builds nothing is known for certain.
gcincotta, has a stickied thread at the top of the forum covering that while the Wiki has links to the radio revisions as well.
HTC and the carriers don't release their change logs...
thanks for the info. I might as well leave the radio for now.
I'm going to copy 2 posts I made in the stickied thread regarding the new radios as many people probably don't read it.
When Sprint/HTC released their update activating GPS/RevA they also released radio 3.35.04. With their recent update, they have released radio 3.39.10. New firmware is new firmware. I'm sure Sprint/HTC wouldn't have bothered to release a new radio if there wasn't SOME improvement. Radio 3.37.20 was released from Alltel/HTC with their update activating GPS/RevA. My question to you is, if you're an engineer writing radio firmware, would you bother to sit down and write new firmware just for the sake of it? Or would you write new firmware if you have additions/updates to make to the old firmware? I'm an engineer myself and I write firmware for a living, and I would choose the latter. If people don't want to use the new radio they don't have to, but I'm personally recommending it due to pure common sense.

This isn't a beta radio. In fact, I'd argue that 3.27 wasn't a beta radio. In the development life cycle, beta is referred to the stage before FIRST release of a product. There have been numerous CDMA radio roms. The problem with 3.27 was that it was very buggy and unstable due to the fact that it was the first radio to include GPS and RevA support. They updated and fixed these issues in 3.35.04. Like I said in my previous post, this is firmware not software. There are no new "features" to have potential problems. A firmware update is like any firmware update, it builds on top of the previous firmware build to FIX problems and roll out updates. Sprint/HTC engineers wouldn't update the radio if there weren't significant fixes to be made that would make your device perform better. They don't make money selling radio roms, nor do they want to waste their time coding for no reason. Trust me, as I said, I do it for a living. If your linksys router, your blu-ray disc player, or even your motherboard bios had a firmware update, you would do it because it's going to make your product perform better and fix previous problems. Same goes for this. Yes it is a pre-release, but it's just that. Sprint may include this same radio with their official release, or they may include a newer build with more updates/fixes, but either way, this radio is better than 3.37.20 and 3.35.04.

Since those two posts, it is CONFIRMED that 3.39.10 is in fact a better radio AND it locks satellites MUCH more fast than 3.35.04.
Hopefully that cleared it up a bit.
GC
dude, you're the man. I'll be on the 3.39 shortly.
Okay...so I've ordered my non-HC microSD card to flash this bad boy w/o losing my current setup. I hope it works.
my 3.39 won't lock at all i am using BAF GPS Toggle...do i need something else?
okay, so im kinda new to this whole ppc thing, what does rom updates do for your phone? which ones are good? and can you update roms from any other cell phone company like a verizon, (for my bell) and bell blocked the internal gps from the phone is there a way to activate it or to get a gps on my phone...any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey dude, don't take this the wrong way. But it sounds like for the meantime you may be better off to stick with official ROM's from your carrier. Upgrading to these custom ROM's really requires someone who has experience and has a better idea of what they want to accomplish.
If you really want to upgrade to one of these, you have a LOT of reading to do to familiarize yourself with the procedures. At worst, you could actually brick your phone (or in other words, render it unusable) if you do something you shouldn't. Although many will try to help you in that case, if it's unrecoverable, nobody here will accept responsibility for that.
If you are unsure, I'd recommend sticking to the official releases for your carrier.
My two cents.
TS
ROM: DCD 3.2.6 with Bell Carrier cab
RADIO: 3.42.40
Install those two, here's what you get:
Slimmed down OS (a bunch of stuff removed in order to free up more RAM)
GPS enabled (you will be able to use 3rd party GPS programs such as TomTom or the GPS feature of Google Maps)
I'm not sure about faster, but the freed up RAM helps with speed. For the most part it's just about getting the most out of your phone.
There is a guide to flashing and I suggest you follow it if you feel that upgrading is something you want to do. Upgrading works for Bell, as I'm on it and it works for me.
You're right, there are a lot of choices, stick to DCD for now and when you get more familiar with the process you can get adventurous.
okay timeshell thanks for the advice but im not a retard i can follow instructions...thanks 88fingerslukee will do ...
Hi hkwildboy,
Great appreciation to hkwildboy discovering such an solution for quick GPS locking ........ & here is a CAB who find difficulty in editing Reg edit......
Mod's just for an awareness among all members i created new thread as this is a most essential part (GPS locking) most people complain of......
As per the feed back from senior's i came to know that the cab i attached was not working so please forgive me ...this thread will be closed.

Yes it is uninstallable......
I'm trying it out on AT&T Fuze with Shep's 3g. I'm indoors and cannot get a fix with the standard setup. Outdoors I usually get a fix within a minute or so. I will report if this improves my experience later this evening.
Thank you for sharing this.
no feed bscks
With admitted limited use, I would tend to confirm reduced lag. I was not able to get locks indoors at home or at work either with or without the cab installed so no improvement there. The lag reduction alone makes the cab worthy of install however, as I must also admit to seeing no ill/adverse effects from the install. Thanks for the heads up.

the cab does only help in speed lock of gps , would not help at places where you are not exposed to open space to get sat signals also depends on radio as well, i am residing at place where i do not get a proper signal...can't expect gps to work.
Does it also reduce lag or was that my imagination? I didn't think it could do anything for signal, but I know many woould like to see an answer to that question. Thanks again for making us aware.
Well I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but you do realize that both 5.08 and the new 5.10 Raphael drivers have already addressed the lock-on/aGPS issues, right ????
All you need is a newer radio, and those new drivers. Any ROM here on XDA has those drivers implemented by now.
This file/reg tweaks are really only useful if you're still running the stock ROM. In which case, how much use are you REALLY getting out of XDA ????
In any case, this fix is for stock ROM's. if you're running NATF, or Energy, or ROMeo's, or Da_G's custom ROMS, the fix for this has already been done, on the HTC side.
I'm running 6.5, and since aGPS is actually working, I'm getting locks in under 15 secs, in under 5 if I'm already connected to the internet.

I don't want to get into any theological debate over the good and evil of it, but there's a lot of people who, for various reasons, are stuck using the stock roms or they are too fearful of flashing.
Just an example, a buddy of mine works for AT&T. One of AT&T's policies (like every other major carrier) is to hand out different handsets to the employees so that they can become familiar with them. Next month he's supposed to sample the Fuze. These types of fixes will actually be pretty useful to him for the purpose of making the fuze realistically functional.

I understand where you're coming from. However, most of XDA's fame and notoriety came from ROM's. Nowadays, it has fixes/updates to things, but at its core, its a place for custom ROMs for HTC phones.
BTW, I should have clarified. AT&T released an official, updated ROM for the Fuze. It, among other things, addressed this issue. So if someone is scared to run a custom ROM, they can always just flash to the official update, and still, problem solved with aGPS.
I have worked for AT&T, so I now the specific program you're referring to. By now, all Fuze's should be shipped with latest update. And even if not, its not very hard to flash to something he likes, and then flash it all back to stock when he needs to turn it in....
And btw, not every carrier does that. At least, not the one I work for now....

I may be mistaken, as I only spent a few minutes looking, but I can't find an officially released rom update for the Fuze anywhere on HTC or AT&T's site. AT&T's support FAQ claims there's no updates yet. Assuming these sites aren't misrepresenting the facts, I'm pretty sure you're mistaking the firmware update with the Leaked version here: A-GPS works in 5.08 leaked AT&T ROM. Keep in mind, that version leaked less than 6 weeks ago and AT&T is famously slow to release.
You're picking at exactly the point I said I didn't want to get into, that we shouldn't be discussing "To Flash or Not To Flash". Fact is that there's some people who can't...or won't...flash their phones, but installing a cab that notably improves GPS performance with minimal (at this point, virtually zero) risk is surely good for them. There's no reason to knock a good solution if it exists. My point is, XDA isn't just about the latest ROMs, and from the reading I've been doing on here for the last couple of years, I don't believe it's ever been just about the roms.
I'd be willing to bet there's going to be a fair number of people getting use out of this fix. Nearly 300 downloads in just the last 3 days, I suspect at least 10% of those downloaders are getting a lot out of XDA without using a custom rom. In other words, cut these guys some slack, they're doing good work even if it doesn't apply to the majority.

But can you be more concrete?

I dont suppose this also corrects the gps satellite bars for signal not showing does it ?
(IE TomTom , Igo , and a few others dont report the signal strength )
Thanks Much

pretty funny. Also a good indication of the subjectivity of this problem and the power of the "placebo effect".
Sorry to say, but this cab really doesn't do anything. It sets pollinterval to 500 which is below the 1 second chip update capability. Da_G demonstrated the ineffectiveness of this. Pollinterval should be 1000. Also this cab sets the logs to 32, another setting that has been proven ineffective.
To fix the missing satellite display, TomTom must be upgraded to v7.910.9185.
There is an AT&T test ROM underlying acquisition time fixes to the GPS system. This correctly enables AGPS resulting in consistent 15 second lock times. It has no effect on position lag.
If you really want to understand GPS issues you must patiently read through the entire mammoth thread located in the raphael forum titled "touchpro GPS lag problems". Switch to the forum and sort by views. It is one of the most viewed threads there. It describes in great detail the various GPS issues starting on about post 300. Videos and real cabs containing tested tweaks are there too.
Here is your quiz. Once finished reading you will be able to easily understand and differentiate between these:
what is position lag?
what is speed lag?
what is a cold start, warm start, hot start?
what is ephemeris and how does AGPS affect this?
how does AGPS differ from QuickGPS?
Why does AGPS have no effect on either lags?
More importantly, you will understand exactly what you need to do to turn your Raphael into one of the absolute best handheld GPS devices out there.
Or, you could just load one of the fixed ROMs and run TomTom v7.910.9185 (yes, position lag is partially based on the navigator you are using)
