GPS Problem - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

I have a problem with the GPS. i installed the new radio version and everything but for somereason no GPS program will pick it up. i tried using google maps and Quick GPS. In order to use the GPS does wifi need to be off? If so then that means i have to use data which will cost me since i have no plan.

and what exactally is REV A and what does it do?

Need Help with GPS

hi could anyone tell me why my gps isn't working? I used the olipro to unlock n then loaded the new sprit rom to get their radio and then flashed the bell 3.0.1
and i downloaded the google maps even clicked on "Use GPS" and it says "This program requires a data connection..."
I would appreciate any help. btw im located in brampton and am with bell mobility.
thanks
ur problem isnt with gps, at least not based on that info. did u verify that you have your data working? can you use the internet?
Can you get online with internet explorer?
Sorry ...beat me to it
o ... so i've misundertood this?...i need a data plan in order to use the gps?
(sorry for such dumb questions)
so there's no way i can use the gps without data connection?

If you're using a program such as Google Maps or Live Search that requires a data connection, then yes you cannot use the gps without a data connection.
If you use something like TomTom that doesn't require a data connection, then GPS will work just fine without the data.
data connection might not be setup in ur connection in the settings tab... but only recommended if u have unlimited.. a family friend went to verizon with a 6000 dolla phone bill for the data charges.. wow.. but that got fixed.. simple mistake on their part.. shoulda been a unlimited instead of charge by kb
yea i don't have the unlimited data connection that's why i deleted th connection settings from my phone cuz wenever i hit the explorer button by mistake it goes online!
but yea i just tried the "Amazenav" and tried the "locate me" function and it says "No gps found". maybe i'm using the wrong software again. please advice which software i could use and how can i find out if the gps is working or not.
thanks

Easy way to figure out if your GPS is FUNCTIONAL. Install this cab, click on Scan and when it scans COM4, if it says Found GPS! then your GPS is functional.
great it says COMM 4 Found GPS and all the rest it says "open failed" or "none".
thank u very much for this. so i guess this means that my gps is working fine?
and which software can i download that will work without the data connection?

Have you read the sticky GPS FAQ thread on the top front page of the forum?

Navigation app?

do we get charged foe using the satellite gps on the phone? i uninstalled the at&t navigator.
Pretty impressive post.
I think this is what you are asking along with the answers:
GPS: no
Data: depends on your data plan and if you have hit your plan limits.

You can use Google's Navigation for free as much as you want.
*NOTE*
GPS still uses a data plan to download the maps, so make sure you don't use all of your data if you don' have unlimited.
Install offline navigation softwares like Ndrive or IGO
just to clarify, the GPS radio itself wont' use data, but the apps will as they update their maps and as for routes.
dont' use the AT&T BS, use google maps or mapquest if you don't care about data use since both are free.
what about if im using wifi rather then the data plan? i have it toggled off on my phone

And you're going to have Wifi in your car how?
Even if you did, (I do know a few cars have wifi hotspots as features), they all come with GPS navigation standard in those packages AFAIK.

Best GPS software for the NOOK?

Ok I'm reading to pick up one of these bluetooth GPS receivers and get my nook performing GPS duties. What software package is best? As I understand it, there is also some other little piece of software that I need to get the bluetooth info to port into the GPS software. Any ideas?

I have had success running CM7 on internal memory with CoPilot Live USA ($4.99 from the market) in conjunction with the free Bluetooth GPS Provider app also in the market. You can't beat that--$4.99 for a 7 inch GPS. I've taken it on a 500 mile trip and it performed perfectly. Stay away from Sygic Aura--it doesn't allow for mock locations.

Does CoPilot Live require a data connection, or can one download all the mapsets to SD and run completely offline?

Once you download the maps, you're done. No data connection needed. However, I'm not sure how one would pull GPS location from a device with no GPS onboard?

Read original post, he bought an external GPS blue tooth unit which he connects to the nook.
I just use my phone hooked up through an audio jack. I'm lucky enough to live where I don't have to worry about not having a data signal.
Disregard my previous lack of common sense. I can't see the forest for the trees sometimes. I need to look into this Bluetooth adapter. Sounds convenient.
I also have heard there is an additional bit of software needed for this to work as eluded to in my first post. Anyone know what I'm referring to? I will have to check out that CoPilot software.
You need the Bluetooth gps provider app. It's free in the market.

I was just about to buy this app, but the reviews don't look great. You've had good success? Will Google maps store maps? I thought they had implemented an "offline" feature. Are there any other apps that store maps so you don't need to use data?

Copilot is usable - but it does have a bug that requires a wifi connection when you first enter a street address and it does not call out street names while navigating
Google maps works but u need a wifi connection to download maps while driving

I haven't experienced the bug of having to have the wifi connection on when entering a street address. And as far as not calling out the street names, it does tell you when to take a right (take the next turn right in .3 miles) or left or exit, etc. The street name is displayed on the Nook, so it is quite sufficient. If it called out even the street names what need for the beautiful Nook display?
I use Google Navigator on my phone, same would apply to the NC of course.. Online maps are great until you need to route somewhere when you have no signal.
A few weeks ago I routed to a back-country location, got there no problem. Leaving however, I had no idea how to get back out as I had no cell signal. Had to bust out the old TomTom One from in the trunk.
I haven't looked into CoPilot, but I've heard various bad things about it.. Price is right though, if it's usable. On WM6 I paid lots of money for TomTom + NA maps.
OK, so I bought the CoPilot app, but it just tells my device IMEI number is invalid and won't let me proceed. Any ideas how to get around this?

Well that sucks.. Piracy measure I suspect, and our IMEI is of course fake since it's not a phone.
I've seen others claiming that it's working for them, so I'm not ready to give up just yet.

Calla969,
What were the installation steps you took after you purchased CoPilot live? Was it the CoPilot Live USA version?
What ROM are you using?
Mine installed fine and is working as we speak. I originally installed CoPilot USA on the SD card with experimental bluetooth rom. Then when I switched over to CM7 on internal memory I restored app and data through titanium backup. I'm currently running it on CM7 tablet tweaks RC1. I'm using a Garmin 10x receiver, bluetooth, mock locations, and satellites enabled, GPS bluetooth provider apk.
*** Edit: Found the problem. It is the most recent update from the market. I got the same IMEI number error. Just restoring now with the previous version (8.2.504). Yes, that's it. Works with this version. Maybe there is a way you can get this version of the apk? PM? ***
Pm sent.
I'm running the latest tablet tweaks version of cm7.

Bump. Any suggestions for the best bluetooth receiver to use with the NC? Maybe its time for a NC GPS sub-forum. Just a suggestion?

I doubt any of them would differ... I get the same range on both of mine on phone and NC.... Both of them mere inches on the NC, where I get 3-4 feet using my phone.
Personally I like my two GPSes for different reasons... My Holux 236 for its accuracy and robustness. And my Columbus V900 for its built-in datalogger, albiet it being about 4 meters consistently off from its real location and -80 meters in actual Altitude.
CoPilot USA
I sent a trouble ticket into CoPilot USA when I got the IMEI error. They dropped a new version about 3 days ago that fixed that problem. New version is 8.2.0.590. When I can get Bluetooth talking to my GPS receiver, CoPilot USA does work. (I strongly prefer TomTom but the price is right for CoPilot USA!) My ROM PhireMod 6.0
BLUETOOTH QUESTION: What Bluetooth application do you use? I’ve tried BlueGPS for Android (1.2.1) -Error msg “Too amy connection problems”; Bluetooth GPS (Googoo Android V 0.5.5p1) -Error msg “Service Discovery Failed”; and Bluetooth GPS Provider (Works most of the time – but seems unpredictable). I’m interfacing a Bluetooth GPS receiver.
So, is "Bluetooth GPS Receiver" from Market the best Bluetooth App?

[Q] Disabling A-GPS

Hi folks! I have a question. My friend has htc hero with latest official rom (dunno what it is). He is a traveler and wants gps to work without using data connection, bcs it's extremely expensive on his operator. He said, that in android 1.6 there was pure gps and it needn't to use data connection to receive location. If he uses any app like gps status or nav app without data connection, gps doesn't receive location. I have samsung device and there is an app, called AngryGPS, there i can change everything about gps settings, including SUPL server and how gps will work (MSBASED or STANDALONE). How can i change settings on his hero? Maybe by porting this app on hero? Rooting is not a problem, i can make it, if it's necessary.
added: if i turn off receiving location from wireless networks in android settings, it not helps
P.S.: Sorry for my poor english

that why i recommended iGO, it uses the maps preloaded on the sd card...
you completely ignore my messages? or my english is SO bad?
HIS GPS WON'T CONNECT WITHOUT DATA CONNECTION IS UP! Not the freaking nav application! Maverick uses preloaded maps too, GPS Status&Toolbox doesn't use maps at all, Turbo GPS doesn't use maps, every program that uses GPS to receive location or establishing connection with sattelites DOESN'T receive location or establish connection without data connection!
Now the problem is clear?
As i told, problem is solved
And iGO is total ****

[Q] Why GPS doesn't work without internet?

Hi,
I'm just wondering why my GPS doesn't work without internet connection. It just can't connect to any sattelite. I'm currently using PFGPS v2.0 FIX for my country (Poland) and I don't see any changes. What is wrong?
It requires Internet to load the maps
Can I load maps now to use GPS without internet connection if I'm not in wifi area?

so you have wifi that means you are connected to the internet!!!
for GPS it can only find your position but can't display your location on a map without an internet connection so GPS needs one.
I will wait for answer from another person. Thank you.
There is an application on the market(related to sports/tracking) that allows you to download a portion of a map and then you can use your GPS offline(no data connection). When I get home I will look for it(I have it on my tablet).
Correct me if I am wrong but Brajano95 means that is it possible to load the maps on his wifi connection and keep then saved when he is out and about to allow the gps to connect. You used to be able to do this in the google labs section on google maps but they've since taken it away unless you look for an older version. Otherwise have a look for third party map app on the android market which allows downloading of map data to the phone

Thats exactly what I'm talking about! Now I'm downloading Sygic Aura (about 550 mb) and will test it later.
Because GPS and Maps on CM7 suck balls at best. Maps is using your I.P. for the GPS coordinates when on WIFI, without it Maps is counting on a reliable signal from your GPS; and that's just not going to happen with CM7.

You can use iGo My Way
I know a fair bit about the GPS module in the Ace so i will comment. I think someone has already told you that it is possible to operate the Ace with preloaded maps. Likewise, i thought that the OP's choice of Sygic Navigation is a fair one.
Back to the original question in the title. GPS can operate with or without internet be it wifi or data e.g. 3G/2G. The difference is how fast you can obtain a GPS lock. Without using any positioning help from data connectivity, you are looking at a lock time of possibly 15 minutes thereabout.
There are 4 modes of operation possible for the GPS module in the Ace which is actually Qualcomm's GpsONE.
1.) Standalone (Slowest using positioning information in cache and smart polling)
2.) MS-Based (Sends data to nearby cell tower(s) and makes use of GPS transceivers in the cell tower(s)
3.) MS-Assisted (Similar to MS-Based BUT data connectivity is broken when GPS transceiver is online. I don't quite like that!)
4.) MS-Based/Hybrid (You need to have superb data connectivity probably cell tower signal strength should be in the -50dBm region. Not very useful in real life usage)
i have had my own thread for fixing GPS, so read up if you want to know more here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320626
first you need the maps to use it offline, and the correct gps.conf for your location http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284506, then you can use it without internet
Mapdroyd is a great app that allows you to download maps for offline use. Unfortunately there isn't offline navigation though..
Hi,
I've solved my problem, just install Sygic! Thanks for helping guys
btw u dont need too install anything.. go to google labs inside maps and add map cache.. now long press a location on map.. click the arrow on the address and u ll see an option to cache that area.. the steps may not be accurate as i tried it a long time back and dont have my phone with me but its possible and what u have to do will be more or less the same...
