anybody from the philippines who's using gps on their athena?
may i ask what your gps settings are?
i'm using x7501.
ciao!
Your location is irrelevant as far as picking up GPS signals is concerned. You just need to ensure any GPS aware program is pointed at the correct COM port.
The hardware COM port is COM5, so pointing a program to COM5 @ 4800 Baud ought to work OK.
By default, the WM GPS Driver is active- Start/Settings/System/External GPS, and this may have the port settings changed, typically to COM4. This is only useful if you plan to use more than one GPS program concurrently. Personally I don't, so I have the Access tab's Manage Automatically unchecked.
Pinoy X7500 Toronto Based
Yes just use COM 5, 4800 Baud and you're all set to go. This is also the settings Im using on mine with iGuidance v4.
Im just curious, what GPS software & Maps are you using there? So that just incase I'll go "balik bayan" next year, I'll know what to use.
Here is a Philippine based Windows Mobile Forum:

While com 5 does work, it is not the fastest that will get the GPS lock.
For the absolutely fastest way to get GPS fix, see this thread (see post #51)

Thanks for that link Steve- the whole concept is fascinating I've seen similar problems using different Radio ROMs and I suspect some of these lock differences may be Radio related to an extent.
To put my logical hat on, I can't see how you can ever get a lock with any software port faster than using the hardware port, which on the Ameo/7500 is COM5. Maybe using the WMGPSID and a software port activates the GPS in the background (at intervals?) to get a quicker fix?
In like manner, I also find that using QGPS actually takes longer to get a fix than just opening the port directly- this may be a function of the Orange SIM I use, or the ORange service itself, as of course QGPS is carrier dependent on getting a good SIM location.
But the most confusing thing in my Ameo is that Radio 1.50 simply never gets a satellite lock (at least it takes 25-40 minutes) where 1.47 gives me a lock in 1-3 minutes regardless of whether I use COM5 or software COM4 or 8. I've tested, upgraded, downgraded and reupgraded to no avail. 1.47 works and 1.50 doesn't This is the same whether using TTN6,m iGO2006 or iGO2008 (which I suppose would be expected)
thanks for ap4 havent had a problem but i have gone and found so many settings for gps can any one give me a default or a list to have my gps work thanks
Theres a lot of advice here about getting a decent fix. The bottom line is your best bet is to use the physical GPS COM port unless you need to run more than one GPS app simultaneously . A software port cannot be more efficient than the hardware port unless it is opened regularly in the background to maintain a current fix.
The hardware is COM5 and Baud can be left at the NMEA standard of 4800.
Remember to go outside for a 1st fix
I had the GPS working and then upgraded to the latest DCD.
I now have:
DCD 3.2.5
Radio 3.42.50
I have COM port set to 4, hardware port set to none and baud rate 4800 and let windows manage the gps. I also set it from 911 to location in phone settings.
None of my apps (GoogleMaps, TomTom) recognize it. And GPS Viewer bombs when I try to open COM4.
Any ideas? I really need my gps back.
I remember some people saying to briefly flip Location back and forth from 911 to Location On a few times, and having it work. Try that, and maybe grab the HTC GPS Tool to try and diagnose this.
Also, if you haven't already, you may want to do the GPS fix that involves messing with QPST.
Hmm, I've got 3.2.5 with the .50 radio, and using TomTom 7 fine...so don't downgrade, keep working at it, since I have that same setup and working fine.
You might try the radio rom again. I also hear that *22899 might help. There are some other GPS software out there that will show you the NMEA messages, see if you are getting any and if not then your GPS is not turning on or there isn't a GPS chip in that phone. Just kidding.
Hi Mods!
I really sorry that I have to open new thread, because I and some others also posted here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405016&page=4
but it seems that no one can solve that problem correctly. And MODs seems that don't know about that problem.
So, could MODs give us some ideas and solutions.
For example: I used Original ROM, GPS with TT7 was OK.
But when I change to another ROM (any other ROM), it was so good that everything works well but not GPS.
Hope to hear from u soon.
Thank you.

You do know about the problem with validating maps for a new installation of TT7 ?
Do a google for this in xda -devs.
i used this TT7 on Kaiser and it worked like a champ.
and from your instruction, I also sink to another sea that the need information is somewhere but could not find out.
could u pls give me a better ideas. pls don't tell me that: google something in somewhere.
I spent so much time to discuss and post somewhere else.
thanks
Clarify.
Please explain the type of gps problems your having, Problems with getting fixes? Problems with tomtom?
I need yr help
thanks friend
My problem is here.
When I bought x7501, I installed TT7.45 with Map of North America. It work fast and better than Kaiser I had.
Then I tried to Up ROM to SPL 3.5 (every ROM for 3.5) and I could not use GPS. TT7 work but it only show the working screen with: Waiting for valid GPS signal... forever. And when I find the GPS position, it says: Poor signal.
I tried to change Radio version but failed.
I also tried to convert back to SPL 1.2 now and working with Official ROM 6.0 (but with SPL 1.2 Oliprof). I tried to change Radio version, from 1.47 to 1.57 to 1.58 but failed. So strange (because I had to format the drive when I convert back from SPL 3.5 to SPL 1.2 so I lost my backup file for SPL 1.2 for original ROM).
Now I can not receive GPS signal.
I also try to install GPS Proxy,but this program doesnt run in my Athena, it says: Negative exception and quit.
I aslo try to change th port for GPS to another COM port, but it will not turn on GPS device.
In my Athena, the default COM port for GPS is COM4.
So, that's my problem.
Could you help me with detail instruction.
So thanks and wait for your help
try
you can try going to
settings/system/external gps/
*
software port com 4,hardware leave it at none,set baud 9600,manage gps automatically checked
*
import attached reg file on device
*
install attached visual gps
*
run quickgps ,download updated empheris file
*
soft reset device
*
load visualgps, click agree,click edit,settings,set port to com4,baud 9600,click ok
*
hold device by window or go outside
*
Wait for grey signal bars to go blue then your set
*
load up ttn,click where u see signal bars in lower right,then agn on right above version number,configure gps to use other nmea,set com port 4,baud 9600
*
it should instantly have fix!
thanks friend
i hope it will work
i try it now then tell u later
but do u mean that it works for AP 4 only? or another rom?
What Radio do you have installed
i am confused because your sig says you have radio 1.57 but you say in your post above that you couldn't upgrade from radio 1.47.
AP4 needs at least radio 1.50 according to here http://www.htc-hackers.com/uploads/AP4_How_To_1.8.pdf

Steps are optimal for michy roms,ap4 gps should be blistering fast "out the box"! When I used ap4 I was using radio 1.57,and even indoors I had gps fixes in 30 secs after soft resetting.
As of now I use radio 1.58 for hsupa on michy 6.1 rom and have fairly good gps.The steps above emulate my settings with exception of rom.
GOOD NEWS - GPS is working like a rabbit
Hi friends
Firstly, so thanks to all of my new friends, who were trying to reply and show me the way to solve the problems.
Secondly, I want to give u the good news. Now GPS is working as a champ.
But it is a little bit difference with some guides from u.
- I follow the steps above and change the baudrate to 9600, but after reset, it comes back to 4800 as default.
- The COMPORT for program is COM 4. For the hardware, I set default is NONE.
- Then, I install VisualGPS.BeeLineGPS.v1.83.Build.125 and reset. After that I run Visual GPS Beeline first, it works after 20 seconds and lock my location when I stay in my car (The weather now is -1 celcius degree outside - very cold).
- Then I run TOMTOM, I choose BUILT IN GPS (but not other NMEA). And TOMTOM works perfectly after 10 seconds - I did that because I remember that I always chose BUILT IN GPS when I used TT7 with this one two weeks ago.
And here are some tests after that:
- I turn on Wifi, open DATA connection (that is a issue when I use Kaiser, if Data connection is opening, TT7 can not receive the signal), then open TT7 (without openning the VISUAL GPS), it works after 12 seconds.
- I come into my room (the second floor in a three floors house) and turn on TT7 without using any other software, it lock after 10 seconds with average 5-8 sats.
WOW. It can't be better.
But I still don't know which one help which one. Because, when I installed TT7, then I run it for the first time yesterday, it said: could not run because of the memory available.
Then I try to run GoogleMap (even if I did not connect to Wifi - so ofcourse GoogleMap only turned on but did not run with data), then I tried to open TT7 again and it run (confuse here, who can explain to me)
The problem only now is.... WIFI. I hope can fix it soon as the instructions from CMONEX.
Thanks friends.
slight correction
just a minor correction to guide after you stating baud rate returning to 4800, in external gps settings on hardware tab to change baud I notice you need to set hardware com port to com 5 first then setting baud to 9600 ,then click ok to save.Go back in external gps settings and back to hardware tab ,as you will notice settings saved but now this time select none in hardware port and leave baud at 9600 then hit ok.
As I remember in ap4 4800 baud was default and worked best with that rom anyway,and so far it works for you.I do recommend setting use other nmea in tomtom input your baud and software com port settings from external gps control panel because you used visualgps to boot up your gps to get sat fixes for tomtom, with these settings you dont have to use visualgps to warm it up.Make sure you update your quickgps evrey 2 days then soft reset and hold phone by window or go outside when you use gps with new emphemeris file from quickgps as it can take a lil bit longer to regain track ironically ,but once you get fix itll be super quick no matter where you are,even if you soft reset.The only time you need to have clear view of sky again to get sat fix is if you turn off device completely for an hour or 2, or update quickgps data agn in 2 days (up to full 3 sometimes) or flash a new rom :>.
For wifi,I dont kno how to fix,cmonex prob has to send you a special file to regain mac address so wifi can work even after spl changes.
I've tried practically everything I've found. Telus cab file, QPST method, changed registry settings, etc. Nothing seems to work. So, I'm hoping someone here can tell me what I am doing wrong or what I am missing.
Phone: XV6800
Carrier: Verizon
Radio: 3.42.50
D: 3.56
P DXAAXAM-4350H
I am running Build 21501 (via this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=497303)
Location On is set
GPS Port is 4, hardware port is NONE, baud rate is 4800, Manage GPS Automatically is checked
I've done the QPST Configuration thing a few times with different IP addresses/port numbers (Verizon, Telus, some other ones) and none seem to work. At the moment, my settings are:
EnableGPS = 1
EnableGPSSmartMode = 1
EnablePDEIPFrom = 1
GPSMode = 1
NumberFixes = 999999999
QoSAccurace = 50
QosPerformance = 89
ServerIP = 216.198.139.92
ServerPort = 8889
TimeBetweenFixes = 1
I am using Google Latitude ("Use GPS" is checked and "Managed by Windows" is selected) and it just sits at "Seeking GPS satellites(0)" regardless of where I am located (home/work/inside/outside/etc).
I am guessing that either I need a different radio, different IP/Port or my device actually has some hardware issue.
Can anyone help me?
Try to use something like htc gps tool or gpsvier to see your status. Also in those programs see if you see red dots on the satelitte view. If not I bet location is off or you are using a custom rom and did not rool back to pregps verizon rom before going custom. Verizon blocks gps with mr1 on custom. So do below directions.

Here is the easiest way to fix your vx6800's gps.
Here buddy, you want to follow my guide. This is the way I fixed my vx6800's gps when a verizon ROM upgrade locked out the gps. Just read it and follow it perfectly and you will have no problems from then on.

This method has helped me, and many others out. I made the steps to be easy for almost anyone to follow. I also provide the downloads.

Hi-
I believe the following are the correct settings for Verizon:
ServerIP=66.174.95.132
ServerPort=8888
And don't forget that after you do the setup using QPST you must edit the registry and change settings there. I have had no trouble on my Verizon XV6800 using QPST and getting the GPS to work. I have the same radio as you and the same ROM.
There are tutorials on this forum and on PPCGeeks that provide the complete instructions. This one has worked for me many times. Note that shadow-tech tells you to "see post #2 if you're not on Alltel". There he gives you the settings for Verizon and other carriers:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=36377&highlight=Alltel+GPS
Good luck!
It took me almost a month to figure how to get my GPS working. Finally after reading hundreds of post, someone mentioned that when you dial *228 to program your phone the friggin sheisters at verizon use this opportunity to disable the GPS all over again. Relock, flash back to MR1, unlock using nue 2.47, flash radio 3.42.50, flash custom ROM of choice ( I am using the newest 6.5 build 21222 from PPC Geeks), DO NOT "update roaming" by dialing *228, and you should be good to go. All of this is a lot easier if you flash from an SD card < 2 GB. Good luck.
P.S. screw Verizon.

Thanks for the input. I went through and did everything you said. I am having issues reinstalling Google Maps (it just pops up an unsuccessful message in the middle of it) but I put Live Search on and it can't get the GPS to lock either. So it seems I am still screwed.
Let me state this again for you. You must roll back to pregps rom before goign custom on a verizon phone. Please follow the link I provided. Also do not use google maps. Use htc gps tool or gps viewer to see your signal. That way you can see if your gps is even trying to get a lock. If you do not see red dots on the satelittle view of either program than you don't have location on or you did not roll back before going custom.
I went to your link and started at step one. When it came time to install the Radio and ROM, I used the 3.42.40 radio and the new 21222 ROM from here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=903142
He just updated the rom again last night and I just flashed to that rom to see if it would help. Now I can't seem to install any apps on there anyway so I guess whether the GPS works or not doesn't really matter until I get that fixed.
Everything I try to install tells me it was unsuccessful.
Edit: Actually I am mistaken. Skyfire installed fine.
And I have downloaded GPS Viewer since the other one wouldn't install and it found the GPS (COM 4, 4800 baud rate) and I click "Open GPS" and my LAT/LON are both 0.0" and it tells me "No Fix".
Are you outside? Is your data connection active? Did you look in satellite view to see if you see red dots? How long did you wait for a fix?
I was outside. I saw about 6 boxes with numbers come up below the globe. The only red dot I saw was one right at the "N" on the globe. No fix or lat/lon. I waited for about 3 minutes.
Well you are at least trying to acquire. Maybe try to stay outside longer. And you didn't mention. Was your data connection active.
I just checked again, making sure the data connection was up (I believe it was before as well). This time, however, I was seeing dots around the globe, not just at "N" adn the value for "Dop" was alternating between 0.0 and 13.1. Still no LAT/LON or Fix, though.
Well it is trying to acquire. Give it some more time.
Also being that you are using agps. I kinda doubt the servers adress are right because this is working at standaloen gps speeds. Also maybe install quickgps. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1862269&postcount=2
Quick GPS can't download apparently so no help there.
I think I'm going to give up on this for a while. It's just not meant to be.
I would say theres a chance the GPS driver in the ROM you are using is a tad buggy. Your GPS at least finds satellites just never gets a lock correct? If you cant get a lock its because you are using a vx6800 make sure your ERI is version 4? Make sure to use QPST to uncheck all the agps boxes in the GPS one tab and then recheck them? ex: all blank [ ], then all [X], then double check your port, ip, and position calculation (dont leave that page write to phone while still in GPS one tab.) Boot ROM back up and double check your registry settings for aGPS, then last thing you can try is putting GPS in standalone mode. By setting Gpssmartmode to 0 enable agps to 0 and gps mode to 1, soft reset and try again.
Thanks for the info. I'll try it and let you know what happens.
You have to run the registry changes that are listed on the page I gave you. That fixes the download problem.

So I put the thing in standalone mode and it works! I am not sure what that means, but it works, so I won't complain. Thanks for all your help everyone!
