Android or custom rom? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

I'm trying to decide right now if it is worth going through (what seems to be) the hassle of getting the DCD custom rom running, or just waiting for Android 1.0 to be released.
Will Android do all of the things that DCD currently does? Or are there going to be major differences?

DCD's ROM's Are Cake to install I would stick with that
Well I can tell you from first hand expirence DCD's ROMS are the easiest to install, most stable, great memory avaibility that I have expirenced so far. As to Android it depends on what you are tyring to do. Can't really compare since they are tottaly different operating systems for mobile DCD's being bassed off of Win Mobile and Android seems to be some Linux variant that Google came up with. I am not really sure what will be in Android but if you use the active sync push email from an exchange server you will deffinatly want to stay with a win mobile ROM as I am not sure what the options for push email will be if you are connecting to an exchange server with Android.

No official WM6 ROM released for Prophet. The last official ROM is WM5 from Qtek.
As for the best, it depends on your definition. More software packaged? Faster in response? or shorter booting time? How about long term stress test with less memory leak?
It also depends on to what extent you are willing to reconfigure it. No on-size-fits-all.
To me, stability and speed go above all other features. Less software packed mean less possibility to go wrong. Korand's new ROM offers these. I got around 30 software already installed on my SD card, with only one patch of CAB to make up registry and shortcut, all of them runs well.
When something went wrong, it's easier to debug, simply hard reset to original ROM state. (Not if your ROM has already got a lot of software and tweak.)
I like Korand's philosophy to build a clean ROM as platform to others. If anything not so perfect, that would be no Power Point mobile, mms, windows live messenger, and java, make it less official look.
However, Power Point is rather impractical mess in a small screen, the same to mms, WLM, without 3G.
It's really up to personal requirement to decide which one is the best. To me, besides speed and stability, the one puts most fundamental, unchanging stuff inside the ROM, and leaves out constantly upgrading stuff outside, is the best for me, partly because i can do the addon myself.
Here i would also like to take the liberty to implore the authors of cooked ROM, or forum moderators, since many guys ask which ROM is the best for them, why not do a more organized form, list to put on the top of forum.
A clean ROM, the common platform to those variants, can be pick out as a lead, like a pedigree, so people can be easier on tracing problem.
On the other hand, as a user, a beggar can't be a chooser, no author got paid here, so, try and choose one best fit your need...Good luck...

Testing ROMs within Windows Desktop OS

Hey,
I've been looking other this forum and other sites and cant find anythin of use.
Basically I'm wanting to know if there is a way to test a ROM without having to install it onto a phone/PDA.
As I've been looking at buying a new HTC QTEK 8500 (StrTrk) for my girlfriend as she's sick of her phone and wants a new one. The phone comes with WM 5.0 on but I have found a few ROMs for WM 6.1 and before I buy the phone I want to checkout the ROM to see what it'll basically be like to use the phone.
What software do I need to be able to emulate a phone to test run a ROM?
This would be useful for others as well if its a generic way as then everyone can test out a ROM and then decide if they want to flash it to their device.
Thanks alot for the help,
M_Taylor40
i don't know how useful emulating the rom would be since the experience would differ based on hardware. Most developers post what apps their rom contain so users know what their getting into before.
Yeah you are right, just my girlfriend is a bit picky about her stuff and I don't want to spend £70 on a new phone for her not to like it lol.
Just thought it would be useful tho, I'm pretty sure you would be able to do it with the Windows Mobile 6.1 SDK kit and Visual Studio just don't have a clue how lol.
M_Taylor40
I also think that with the SDK and visual studio you might get an idea although based on my very little experience with programming, the only way to know the output is testing it on the real thing. I would say that if she likes the phone originally with WM5 then you can test a WM6 or 6.1 ROM and if you don't like it then flash back to WM5. Many people (including myself) flash all the time to find the best ROM for them.
Lol, thats the thing, I aint bought the phone yet so she can only go off my Kaiser to see what WM6.1 is on there (She aint gettin as good a phone as me lol!)
She likes the look of the phone but I think she wants drivin lessons instead lol, see wot it goes for on ebay lol, was £15 I saw last night!
Thanks anyway!

Any solution?

Raphael ROM recommendation for Med Student

Hey guys,
So I'm starting my 3rd year in medical school where I am finally entering the hospital. I bought my Fuze intially so I could use it as a PDA also while doing my rotations.
Since I got my Fuze, I've been trying out the various ROMs from the different chefs and I loved changing ROMs. However, because I will be in the hospital, I need a ROM I can count on that is stable and pretty fast. I don't want to get yelled at by the attending cause my phone crashed with a brand new experimental ROM. And I want to beat the iPhone geeks.
Do you guys have any recommendations of the ROMs we have all tried? WM 6.5 or 6.1 doesn't matter. Or should I just stick with the stock for stability purpose?
Also, I need longer battery life. My battery life used to be pretty good but now all of a sudden it drops precipitously. I might have to go with the extended battery route if I'm going to be in the hospital all day.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
I use Shep´s ROM, it runs stable, altough I would recommend Skyscape softs (especially for medical purposes), they are partly free for students, and nearly updated daily,
I'd say go for a stock rom, and then upgrade the radio for better battery performance, thats what i did after several upgrades
personally if you want the most stability i would use Da-g's roms they are stable but if you want to wow the ipod users and whoever else i would use nrg's rom or shep's they are very nice fast and stable with nice features i would suggest researching for a better radio it will help out battery life but its trial and error
I would use anything by NATF for rock solid performance. Unfortunately for now that means 6.1. But soon there will be a 6.5 release.
I am currently running the latest Da_G ROM. While it is good, I still have an occasional issue, usually just when I need the phone for a business function. If the new NATF 6.5 ROM does not come out soon, I may drop back to NATF 4.7. I will miss the scrolling in 6.5 as well as the titanium interface, but I too need a phone/PDA that I can count on.
Good luck with the attendings.

Roms
I personally would check out one of Mr. Makk's Roms they offer the 6.5 Rom feel with stability. I put the spb mobile shell skin on there and it works great and still offers the cool high tech feel that can be put up there with the IPhone Geeks, battery last me a full day with medium use.
Hey,
I'm also in medical school. I use the EnergyROM. It's fast, stable and does what I need.
However, for my medical applications, I actually use an iPod Touch. Lots of great softward for Eponyms, calculators, H&P, etc. Nice in a pinch when you forget what Ogilvie's syndrome or something like that is.
always nice to know that other med students are checking these pages too - too many of my classmates have iphones (boo)
i've been using energyrom 3 and it's been great - fast and stable w/ pretty good battery life too if you have a decent radio (stock should be fine but i'm using 1.14.25.35 - obviously this depends on location). word of caution - some people have reported that epocrates is not auto-updating (and thus have a hard time installing) but for some reason i haven't had this problem w/ mine. a soft reset should do the trick but i'm not really sure if this is still an issue.
anyway, good luck in rotations!
Nfsfan's rom.

Med Student Rom
I would use the new ATT 6.1 rom as your standard. Very solid and quite quick, and it includes the latest radio and is quite good with the battery. If you have a problem with a piece of software, you can be relatively assured it is the software's issue and not the rom. Flash it, fill it with your apps, and make a backup so you can go back to it anytime. No one has yet put out a stripped version of this rom, but there is plenty of space in the stock rom nonetheless. It also has some nice "bling" to help with the iPhone comparisons.
Of the 6.5 roms, I've found Da_G's to be most stable. Others may be also. I wouldn't recommend NRG's 3.0 roms as they are running TF3D2, which for me causes random appointment shifts. When you need to wake up for rounds or for class, it doesn't do to be an hour late sometimes. I've seen this even with his latest build.
Enjoy your experience, and good luck!

thanks for all the information! i'm going to try out the ROMs suggested here and see which one works for me.
are there more medical apps on the ipod touch than the windows mobile? i would think with windows mobile being an existing platform there would be a lot more applications.
wish you all the best of luck!
Hello there, med student too, year 4
So to help u a little bit now i.m using Energy ROM 3 ... really good and fast room, looks great BUT one major disadvantage is that u cannot run UpToDate v 17.1 (last version) on it because it uses the newest pocket internet explorer. Personally i think uptodate is the most complete interactive medicine atlas to put it simple. Now i.m using skyscape products, they help alot but still most of med students prefer uptodate
Cheers and good luck with your exams

There may be more apps for Windows Mobile but the bigger, capacitive screen and ease of use does it for me. Don't get me wrong, the Fuze is great but it just doesn't compare to the bigger, more finger friendly screen on the iPod. I always end up hitting the wrong thing on the Fuze and it takes twice as long because I have to go back and restart. With the iPod, I go to my calculator, pop in the Scr, age, race, etc. and in a second I have my GFR. With the bigger screen and buttons in the iPod apps, I never end up hitting the wrong thing.
Maybe if I had a Touch Pro 2...
I'm a dutch flightsurgeon for the Royal Dutch Airforce and I use my TP on daily base for medical purposes. Works great with my own M-rom but it's Dutch... ;-)
Nice to see all those soon to be docters in here.
Maybe one of the admins can create a medical corner for exchanging info/programs???
Energy ROM 3.0 and 1.12.25.19 radio (don't forget matching rilphone.dll)
Fastest and most stable with apps
I use many skyscape apps (harrison's, ecgnotes, taber's, 5min, etc.) and epocrates
If you use ePocrates, you need to stick to WinMo 6.1 as it's not compatible with WinMo 6.5 (yet, without any response from epocrates to my emails)
I'm starting residency and can't wait or deal with instability, so after 3 years of modding I've ultimately caved in and bought the iPhone 3G S
Enjoy,
Dr. iSheep

yeah so many more attendings and residents i see are getting iphones for their support and ease of use. i'll probably do the same when i start residency in a year or so b/c honestly who has the time/energy to browse through these forums to find stuff, correct bugs, etc.
for now i'm using a fuze. if you do want to use a 6.5 rom, you can install epocrates. it's just that the update conduit doesn't work so it won't be able to sync during the installation. you can get around this by installing epocrates on 6.1 then backing up the program folder and moving that to your 6.5 rom. of course, you still won't be able to update directly in 6.5. search for one of my threads as i described the workaround for running epocrates in 6.5.
Med Student... you probably dont want to start flashing since it is addicting and you will spend most of your time in here and not on your books.
Get back to studing!!!!! ;P
hehehe
SoBBie
PS I use Energy mostly but have flashed most others to play with.

ROM recommendation for Google Maps navigation

Hi All,
I'm much more familiar with WM ROMs, but I'm dealing with my wife's HTC Hero and trying to make sense of the Android World. Her phone is running Orange UK stock firmware 1.5, build 2.73.61.5. My first instinct was to upgrade to the latest firmware available (2.1 I guess) but it sounds like these ROMs are still a bit experimental, which isn't going to go down well
Could someone with a good broad knowledge of the available ROMs please recommend the latest ROM which is going to be stable, feel complete and not result in complaints of 'it was better before'? The main aim is to run the version of Google Maps necessary for turn-by-turn navigation. I guess there are a few extra steps to get this working in the UK, but I heard this was possible.
Thanks!
It is possible, but you'll need 1.6 or above.
As 1.6 isn't available, you're looking at one of the experimental roms. The downside is, most of them don't work with Google Nav in the UK. The one that does seems to be Kagudroid, but it's an AOSP. No Sense UI at all... no facebook sync, no automatic backlight, no fancy time widgets. You get my drift?
I'd recommend either you wait until late feb (after HTC release official 2.1 rom), then there'll be a host of excellent ones up for grabs. In particular, from Modaco/Lox/Benhaam.
I imagined that there would be a few mature ROMs based on 1.6 because it's been out for so long. If there are, is there any reason not to install one of these then unlock Google Nav separately (like showthread.php?p=5122811#post5122811). [Sorry, not allowed to post links with my account!]

[Q] Q: How do I know if I can install custom ROMs on my Mozart?

Hi guys, I am a complete newb to the Windows Phone 7.x scene. I was a long-time user of Window Mobile 6.x before jumping to the Android bandwagon a couple of years ago. I have extensive knowledge with WM 6.x and Android but I know next to nothing about WP 7.x
EDIT: I have found my way around installing custom ROMs. It was much easier than I thought. Some Android devices are much harder to root than the process to do RSPL is on WP7. So far, so good.
I am now happily running an old SPL 1.23 which I use to do RSPL (I am a bit wary of HSPL) and then install custom ROMs.
Can anyone help me/guide me around with these questions?
UPDATE/EDIT: Questions with RED no longer need to be answered, as I have found the answers myself
1) Can I debrand it so I get back to the main HTC fork (which hopefully gets updates sooner)?
2) Can these mobile phones be overclocked? If yes, does it yield any good results, and if it does, how can I do it?
3) What is the process for installing custom ROMs, and is there any merit to doing this (i.e. in Android Cyanogen and MIUI often offer a better overally package than equivalent stock ROMs)
4) Which is the best radio update to use? I remember HTC phones are notorious about having radio revisions that are 'better' or 'worse'. My Touch Diamond had this issue, and so did my Hero and Desire.
Also, if you think that there is anything else I need to know, I would be glad to hear (about) it.
Many thanks in advance!!!
Hi,
@2)
Not that I am aware of.
@4)
For the moment, radio updates are not provided as stand-alone updates.
Therefore, radio-updates always come with other software-updates that influence the battery-power themselves (and that might tinker with internal drivers as well).
This makes it difficult to impossible, to accurately measure the performance of a single radio-version.
So far, I don't know of any specific radio topic (like there was for the HTC Diamond) that compares signal strength and power consumption.
Your best bet seems to be (for now) to either try them yourself and see what works best or just stay with the one you currently have.
I can provide you with a tutorial, on how to rip radio updates from the large update packs.
For a tutorial on how to flash them (including a standalone 5.71 radio update), see my post in the Mozart General section.
Best regards,
FrozenLord
