I've had windows phones for years now. and always end up grading my Roms due to more features, better battery usage, better radios, etc.
I just got my touch pro and have been reading a few threads about new roms. Roms always seem to fix 75% of stock rom problems and introduce 5-10 new bugs. But still worth the trade off.
Is it worth it really yet? I actually like my sprint rom. and it looks like most things can be changed/fixed with cabs......
I know it's a funny question to ask, that really has no right or wrong answer. But wanted some input from those that have upgraded.
Do you see:
Battery improvement?
signal improvement?
Graphics FPS improvement?
bug improvement or more problems than stock?

Yes and no
-It depends what you're looking for but with the ROM I'm running I've greatly improved battery life. From what I understand there is a reg. edit that can be done to improve battery life with the stock rom (something about how often the phone polls the battery to check the level).
-I updated to another radio as well and I think I've had an overall improvement with the signal strength, but that's a little tougher to tell.
- Haven't noticed much of a difference with the FPS with any of the ROMs I've tried, but have seen a few of the stock bugs disappear ie the R button calling who ever is highlighted in the contacts menu. I read through all the threads about the new upgrades, but I have not seen anyone talk about power consumption and battery life.
Can someone who has done the upgrade lay out the differences?
It seems to have improved, but I've done quite a few hard resets and other various testing, so I can't say how much.. But it definitely seems to have improved..

About twice a week I have HELL days were the phone gets a work out and tomarrow is one of them.
The old Cingular ROM:
Turn on Phone at 6am-by 12 noon it would be dead, I use a lot of 3G and video streaming.
Tomarrow will be the first hell day since the new ROM, so I will report back tomarrow night and let you know how it goes.
After several days with the new ROM and a full day with the new 1.33 radio it appears that battery life is definitely improved.
I am running radio 1.27 and i can say that with this .rom battery has improved somewhat from what i saw in 1.20.....
The battery life is definitely better on the new ROMs. I'm running 1.27 Radio ROM and with a 3000mah battery my phone last around 10 hours now.
I certainly hope so. I would like to consider myself a power user. I have my push email downloading every 2 minutes. So I am usually dead by 3pm. I hope this will be better under those conditions.
Are people here using the battery saving hacks on the Wiki or are you using the default ROM settings? I have not checked, they might be the same in the new ROM.
I'm only using the default ROM settings.. Minus a few CABs in the extended ROM, but those are mostly things that annoy me anyway (like the Good Email and such)..

Has anyone tried the tweaks on the Wiki with this ROM? If so, how much battery asving do you get and what are the possible side effects?
bat life is so much better.... it would almost be dead by 10pm.. not its still over half by 10
I'm awaiting delivery of my new unbranded and unlocked Galaxy S2 really looking forward to having the best phone on the market, since March last year ive had a HD2 which was/is a superb phone and has served me well but ive sold it on to fund buying this, i notice some user names on here who used to be post on the HD2 forums just have a couple of questions regarding the few ROM's which are currently available for the GS2.
The most popular appear to be Villian ROM and Litening ROM, both seem to have superior battery life and are very fast, the Litening ROM sems to be easier to flash (i stand corrected on that) and you can flash this without having to root your phone first, im experienced in flashing ROM's for the HD2 but this is all new ground for me so out of those 2 ROM's which would you recommend beginning with, any pro's and con's,etc,etc ive read both threads and both appear to be excellent ROM's, Pulser in particular appears to be a very skilled developer.
Also any other recommendations/tips you have starting out, is it a good idea to get rid of all the Samsung bloatware to preserve battery life,etc,etc.
I've read quite a bit on here so im aware of certain things already but even though ive been on XDA a long time im so used to the HD2 i feel like im starting over again (well i suppose i am in a way)

I made the same jump as you and Im very happy with it.
With regards to the "easiest" rom to flash, I dont think theres any difference really, as long as you follow the instructions carefully its really very simple.
The VR thread has very clear and simple instructions. You'll get used to it
Bloatware, I would reccomend just leaving it as it is and seeing how your battery life is. If you feel it could improve then start stripping things out and see if it gets better. I've only got rid of the wifi sharing crap and can still make it through a day with 40% left. That could probably improve as well if I bothered to tinker some more.
You could always flash the lite version of villain rom, which contains NOTHING.
Not really willing to compare the two you mentioned as I havent tried litening so that would be unfair. For me, the main advantage of using VR is the VillainTweaks app and the level of support available, should you need it.

I've already acesertained that the battery life is superior so that is great to hear,and i can see that Pulser unlike some devs does seem to be involved in the thread (support) which is also a positive thing.
I might keep the stock on it for a few days then flash, I suppose if your on XDA it obviouss your gonna be flashing a custom ROM at some stage.
In all honesty I can think of only one bug I have suffered and I have seen it reported on other ROMS not just VR, sometimes my screen timeout settings will return to the default 30 second setting.
I have had 2 random reboots in the month or so that I've had the phone and both of those only occured after I had gone over 100 hrs without a reboot....

Just a balance between speed and extending battery life that little bit more. It really doesn't feel any slower at 800 than it does at 1.2 but it uses less power.

I haven't seen anyone mention using X-Scope browser on these forums just Dolphin and stock, X-Scope for me was the best browser i know of and i used it all the time with my HD2 am i to assume this browser also works fine with the GS2?
Also does ROM manager work on the GS2, reason i ask is because when i had the HD2 sometimes after installing certain apps or a new ROM i would get force closes but after fixing permissions in either ROM manager or CWM it usually fixed that problem.

Just tested x scope and it seems to work fine.
Rom manager is not something I've ever been a fan of, theres no way of knowing what your flashing. You can fix permissions through cwm anyway.

I have been using CM7 and Dorian´s Redpill Hybrid. But now I need something much more stable and with great battery life. My problem is that at times I get random reboots and the screen is unable to be unlocked.
Now I have had a lot of ICS theming and I would like to keep some ICS-like stuff. I know that for battery its best to use Faux optimized kernel.
Now I do not really mind if I have to go back to nearly stock with blur and all, but I really need a rom that will not freeze up on me and will not go randomly rebooting on me.

I'm thoroughly convinced that the "freezes" and "random reboots" is an inherent problem of the Atrix itself as it happens across all ROMs (either in my experience or through reading about it in threads).
Go to each ROM thread and view the most recent pages to see what people are experiencing in regards to battery life and stability. The responses you get in a post like this will more than likely be far too biased and inconsistent with actual usage.

Neutrino and CM7 stable with Faux 0.2.3 1.0ghz seems to be the best combination for me, have nothing but good things to say about both.
As for reboots, I can't say I've had the problem, but it seems like lots of people do from time to time, more so on other roms that I've noticed just glancing over threads.
Neutrino has to be one of the best ROM's I've ever experienced. It's well maintained and has a host of performance improvements. I've experienced some of the best battery life AND stability with this rom.
The ICS alpha is going well but its a long way away from matching the maturity of Neutrino. The battery life is still an issue though so I wouldn't switch just yet. Once the "bluesleep" problem is taken care of then it will be a great rom with ICS as its backbone rather than just a theme!
Im new here and Ive been lurking around in the forums. I just installed jb v4 on my note i717. Any idea on how I can get the smartassv2 govenour and the sio scheduler? I dont have any of those and Id really like to have more battery life. And if not is there a kernel I can flash to have it and thats compatible with my rom? Im using trickster mod btw, Thanks!!

I have already directed you to the only alternate kernel that is going to work with Padawan. I am definitely no developer, but it would take a lot of effort just to extract those little options, not to mention the permission of the developer, and it would then most likely have to be installed into another kernel that could be compatible with Padawan.
I am not sure what it is that you are so intent on having those options for, I am sure you have your reasons. not sure that anything else is going to give you better battery life on a 4.1.2 rom. it seems with the progression from 4.0 through 4.4, the battery life is going to diminish a bit with every evolvement.
can I suggest maybe you try Black Jelly. the different rom may provide you that option. if not, Blownfuse has an alternate kernel list in that OP which was designed specifically for that rom.

My friend, its your phone. Out side of the governer and scheduler, battery life is the only feature you are bringing up. What kind of user are you?
Heavy video streamer
Big time gamer
Lots of music
Facebook addict
Various roms are going to provide various results. And no 2 devices are going to react the same. I know, folks have said this before, so sorry to repeat.
For what is may be worth, here is my rundown
4.O ICS ... most stable but may be lacking in some features
4.1.2 JB ... touchwiz based, the most stable JB your going to get
4.2.1 JB ... more features evolving into, but most unstable. Some able to control with alternate kernel. Battery life dwindling.
4.3 JB ... increased smoothness and improved stability. Still able to control with an alternate kernel to a certain extent. To me it started to become like medication. The phone seemed to build up a tolerance and stability would decrease. Decreased battery life.
4.4 KK .... did not have a problem with stability, but battery life has really suffered as is the complaint of many.
No rom is going to be 100% perfect. It is more of what can you tolerate for an inadequacy.
I love my music, I FB quite often, I'm on XDA several time a day and I have been catching a few minutes of Youtube.
My phone ran ORGASMIC on Padawan and I did enjoy Hellybean also. To me, battery is like gasoline, nobody is getting any better than me. Everybody pays the same at the pump. You can always get a Ravpower battery 2700 from Amazon for $8 and many swear it increase battery life immensely.

I would just take a few for a test drive then. if you had a problem with Padawan and random reboots, then my guess is you either had a bad download or your not flashing clean. a dirty flash is going to leave some straggling files from previous rom which are most likely going to conflict.
but try some different roms and let them settle. give them a couple days. if its not going to work for you, try the next.
one rom just wouldn't run on my phone and that was Carbon Rom. I tried several different versions, with and without alternate kernels. always clean. many swear by it and love it, that's why I kept trying it, but it just did not like my phone. no biggie, plenty to choose from.

Hey man. Just giving you an update. It turns out I had a bad battery. The middle of the battery was enlarging, I have no idea why. I got a new one and everything's working much better now. Have you heard of anything like that before?

Very common at about the 10 to 12 month mark. Battery starts to swell. You can get stronger battery for $8 on amazon.
Glad everything is working better, still want to stay clean though.

at first: this is not a "whats the best rom" thread.
i have 2 very focused questions:
What are the idle times with those different roms?
Are there some Main feature differences?
Aktually im running cm11 m5 snapshot with smartassv2 Governor. its smooth but the battery life is kinda poor.
Im looking for a rom with long battery life. And i dont care about google now, talking to my phone(ok google) nor i need the special features from the standart samsung rom.
Would be realy helpfull if u can review to my questions. Greetings!

There are no definitive results, I have used both and I keep coming back to Omni due to the fact that on SlimKat music stutters like crazy when the screen is locked. Also, Omni updates are small enough to update often without having to download a complete update, to many users this a huge deal due to data limitations in certain countries. As for usage, idle time etc, like stated before, that depends entirely on what is installed on your device. Install a bunch of apps that need to constantly receive data updates and you will have battery drain and very little deep sleep. Where features are concerned, you kinda learn to live with limitations due to missing features on a specific rom. If you really want, you can most likely find an app that will bring a missing feature to a rom. I see a lot of people throwing their toys out the cot because one of the other does not have a specific feature implimented, yet the developers have done so with good reason, usually either performance or battery life.
With all said, there are many roms out there, Omni and SlimKat aren't the only players. It's difficult to compare roms nowadays because you are never quite sure if your kernel tweaking or custom kernel with it's hundreds of tweaks is the reason for a device not going into deep sleep either.
Give them all a try and decide for yourself, nandroid backups and apps like Titanium Backup makes it so easy.

Sure you can do what you stated but bear in mind how will you compare the battery life across roms..
There should be some standardized test... Like looping video playback or some other method which does not change based on you usage habits..

Pa is another you're missing from you're list of developed roms. What you could do is test video playback, calls incoming/outgoing,one game of choice "high end battery draining game" and compere them all. As for the kernel tuning.. Read about what really happens and you will fine not a lot does happen with UV/uc .

You can compare but you have to use that phone for more days not like just one and you have to full charge and then discharge 2 or 3 times till the phone make the correct battery stats. So i think you can test but better with daily use or get an app that drains battey faster well i think this may work
