I know its not possible with the regular Sprint TP but is there a registry we can edit or a program out there that it will do it for us so we can use Data while talking on the phone?
(on my samsung instinct I was able to use data and talk on the phone at the same time for sprint)
Thanks
D
Can't we as long as we are in revision a data areas?

hi, i recently asked about disabling GPRS which i have now done through my network provider.problem is, it's still possible to access the web via GSM. does anyone know how I can permanently disable any access to the web - even if the phone is reset? O2 say they can't Block access to the GSM number. I have to do this - or get rid of my phone.
maybe if there were a program which would block any atempt to modem using gsm you could put it in the extented rom
but really it's a bit like trying to make sure nobody call a surden nr from a phone but having to do so in your end and not in the operator end
it's only possible if some hack program can block all attempts to connect using anything but usb
Disable GSM
Thanks for that. Pardon my ignorance - but what is my extended Rom? How do I but thing in there? Is such a program available?
On my settings, I notice that the GSM number has a password associated with it. Does anyone know if I can apply to change my password. That way - if the phone is hard-reset, it will try to set up a connection with the default password - which woyuld then be invalid. That way, I could ensure that only I have internet access and only when I manually input the password.

Hate to even mention this but as a last resort you could damage the SIM card port or have siemens disconnect the connector to GSM or SIM if possible, that would take out the phone option.
Ah, but wouldn't that disable the phone completely? i still need the phone to make ordinary calls...
Thanks though Iggy. Know you say that you hate to mention it, and I know I must sound like a complet Philistine Monkey for wanting to do this. But I bought the XDA principally for its connectivity to MS Office, and for the fact its a phone. I couldn't give two hoots about using the internett. it costs too much anyway, and others have access to the phone and know how to reset, use the net, then reset again - and restore the info. Thus making it look like it hasn't been used. (though I can check the call register etc).
So you see I need to do this - to protect my wallet & my kids...
As a very last resort - I'll sell the XDA. buy a seperate PDA with no mobile connectivity, then buy a standard mobile instead.

Sorry Damian Gardiner, did'nt quite understand before that you still needed the phone functionality. Just a quick question, for you to connect to an ISP is that not a data call (whether by GSM or CDMA or Normal phone line) and if so I thought it was possible for your provider to disable data calls?????? Don't really what I am talking about, just thinking out loud.
The way that I disable mine is in the [My Connections] settings where it asks to "Select a modem", I pick the "Hayes Compatible Modem" which does not exist in the XDA. So the device cannot dial out my ISP number. When I actually want to connect to my ISP, I pick "Cellular Line". Actually, if you pick "Cellular Line" it just counts as voice minutes. This can be very useful especially during weekends. It is quite slow though. If you pick GPRS then it counts as data, which is additional service.
Give it a try.
Pat
If your provider disables both GPRS and CSD, you can't make any data calls at all. CSD is what provides the ability to dial a provider.
Wouldnt it just work when you delete ALL connections on the XDA?
That way the device won't be able to connect straight away and thus alwys comes up for some user interaction. . .
When I am on my own network I use CSD (ie. dial-up) because it counts as voice minutes (and I don't ever use all the minutes of my bundle)
When I am abroad I use GPRS (cheaper than Roaming CSD)
Don't know if this has been posted before or not sorry if it has, I will not retype the post but here is the link: http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1472011
Is it possible to make a program that when you click on it it changes the reg value to be able to switch to Roam Only and Back? I have no knowledge of doing this so I am asking
Thank you
What's wrong with choosing it from the Phone Settings menu (comm manager)? It's a few steps, but usually only takes me a few seconds.

That allows roaming (if I understand the setting you are referring to) not forced Roaming, I live in a area where there is a hint of Sprint Signal there is a 5 bar presence from US Cellular but my handset keeps jumping to Sprint I miss calls etc
My Palm 800W had a setting that would select Roam Only since it appears that we know which reg entry that needs modified I was hoping someone with software skills (not me) could write a small app.
found this over on ppcgeeks somewhere

Sorry, what I was talking about is after doing the hack and you have the Roaming Only ability, what's wrong with just choosing it from the Comm Manager settings dialog?
I actually switch from Sprint Only to Roaming Only on a regular basis, I've gotten very quick at making the change because I am used to to doing it.

What exactly does the CAB do? On the Sprint Touch Pro, its a single registry change. Is this CAB for other phones like the Verizon version or does it do something else as well? Just curious.
it creates the option in settings\phone\roaming for you to select roam only rather than going in and editing code. makes enabling and disabling easy.

Oh, so it does the registry hack only? So a more friendly install for those not comfortable messing with the registry?
Exactly. I've done the mod several times on different devices. My home in Michigan is a Sprint dead zone. It teeters on Sprint and roaming all the time. When I came back this time I noticed my Roam Only option was gone. There must have been an OTA update that changed it back to my surprise.
Well this time I just used a cab and plan to use it on my wife's Diamond. Much quicker.
anyone know if sprint phones can roam on ATT towers? when i visit my parents there is a sprint tower 2 miles away and even when forcing roam i get no service. they all have full service on their ATT phones. that was the reason i installed this cab but either it does not work or i cannot use ATT towers.
Tom,
No you cannot roam on ATT. Its different technology. GSM vs. CDMA.
You can roam on VZW and Alltell etc.
Erik
Force roaming only on a Verizon touch pro 2
Dont get me wrong, Verizon Coverage is unbeatable, but I plan to live in Tijuana Mexico so that I can save some money on rent. The problem is that my phone (and every other phone I had) tries so hard to find verizon signal with no success as obviously there is no vzw towers in Mexico (only partner towers). On the phone menu there is only home only, automatic A, and automatic B. I need a hack so that I can have a "roaming networks only" so that I can freely use my phone without it switching automatically to a 1x one bar or zero bars. How can I do this??
I live in Germany and have a T-Mobile Vibrant (JI6). Constantly transiting between different countries, we hop on and off different networks. By default, my data roaming is off, but for some reason when the Vibrant hops on a new network it allows data to transfer and puts up the dialog box 'Do you want to turn data roaming off?' Data will continue to download until I select 'Yes'. So I am paying for the data even though the option is off by default. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong, or have experienced this as well? Also, I was wondering how do people who tweak and edit the firmware, like cyanogen, go about doing it? What software do they use to view firmware code and edit it?
Thanks for the help!
Guys I'm totally new to smartphones so I need an advise. I would like to buy myself Moto Atrix but I don't want to buy a data plan for it. I plan on using Rogers pay-as-you-go voice sim card and use wifi for data. Is that even possible on the smartphone? Also I plan on using this phone in europe so question is would a pre paid voice sim work on this phone in europe? Oh and one more question if the voice sim with wifi for data would work would I be able to use all the internet apps on the phone or some would not work over wifi?
Thanks for your time
It is possible and a great way to save money. As long as rogers supports quad band GSM and not CMDA (like verizon), then you can use the voice and texting features of this phone all you wish.
Some things to note:
The phone must be unlocked and have some kind of wifi connection established to set up a motoblur account, (buy a used one not a new one).
Google Maps and navigation will not work unless you can find some kind of cacheing program.
Voice actions will not work, they require the google servers to process your voice.
Rogers may decide to change your service manually if they are like At&t. Check out other GSM networks if they try to do this to you.
Thanks for a quick reply. Now why should I buy a used phone? I think right now new/used prices are close. Also would google maps work in a wifi hotspot? I know that I can't use it unless I'm in the wifi hotspot. The same thing with voice commands souldn't they work as long as I'm in the wifi hotspot? I plan on using CoPilot software on the phone so I guess I wouldn't need any data connection for that right?
Thanks
If you are in a wifi hotspot, your phone will work identically to a phone with a data plan. You must buy it used because to activate moto blur initially, you must have a data connetion (data plan) to sign in, or else it wont let you continue (You cannot enable wifi yet).
Oh I didn't know about motoblur account. Is there a way around that by rooting the phone? What about using my firends sim with data to do that?
I think the process fails and then it'll ask you if you want to connect via wifi..no need for a data connection..

No it's not true. I signed up a motoblur account over the WiFi. I bought mine at costco.com as an upgrade to my original ATT HTC Fuze and I do not have a data plan.
Sean
you can make a blur account on the internet from a real computer
Just add data and quit being cheap. They make basic phones for people who don't see the value in paying for internet.

Completely disable & block 2G 3G ALL data access on Android via S/W, Hack, or MDM?
Possible to completely disable 2G 3G ALL data on Android directly using some Software on PC or Phone or via MDM?
There have been cases of some people I know (older family) that were brought an Android phone but inadvertently some Data was used without a Data Plan - more expensive.
Lets say instead of buying Feature Phones for some delivery boys, we bought Cheapest Android phones possible - The boss there just wants Phone calls with them and wants to ensure the boys wont be able to Rack up Data use/ bills on the phone -
Are there ways to Disable Data AND/ OR WiFI? Selectively or so? Maybe only have it on when being configured by MDM?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42051073
I saw this suggested APN answer, but that means a user/ employee can change it as well. Any "Administrator" kind of way to "block the data" and "disable users ability to circumvent" around it? Some MDM or Software / Hack solutions besides the wrong APN hack that someone could possibly get around? Any way to prevent them getting around as an Admin?
You could have the carrier block it but to be honest it will cause more issues as the device was made to be connected so it will lag and things will be force closing all over the place.

Carrier company are devious people. They canned entire CDMA network with only a 7 day notice, forced millions of people to buy GSM phones and since there was no price diff between a Feature Phone & Android Phone we got cheapest Android on the market for the delivery boys.
BQ S37
Kit Kat 4.4
It has We UI
They are so devious, to get new SIMs they forced us to send new GSM phones to them and then only activated the old CDMA numbers on GSM and then added:
1. Phone numbers of all their Sister companies - Insurance, Healthcare etc etc
2. Set up APNs and data etc on the phone
So I followed the following suggestions:
1. Enter wrong data into APN - Tested it
2. Disabled "Data Traffic" in Toggles
But, the issue is that these 2 can be fixed by someone if so inclined.
Is there any way to DISABLE a Users access to these things?
