FAQ Noob Newbee Guide - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus ROM Development

Hi, can anyone point me in the right direction to a faq or newbe guide for upgrading my HTC Touch Dual (Nike) phone? Im not sure how to flash the ROM properly.

Two of the four stickies at the top of this forum deals with flashing ROM
The first about flashing HardSPL:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355730
HardSPL essentially write protects the boot section of your phone. It is good insurance if you plan to flash, as it does not get overwritten by ROMs. That way, you can recover from any problems faced.
The second deals with unlocking your phone. Most telephone companies lock the phone such that it will only work with their SIM cards and ROMs. This section unlocks it.

Do read both threads completely as any problems you might come across has been presented and answered before.
After that, read the thread again...
Happy flashing

Upgrading, HardSPL, SuperCID.. confused, a little... help??

Sorry chaps, bit of a newb with the phone flashing, although experienced in general PC/I.T hardware etc... so usually get to grips with things techy...
Read the posts on HardSPL, but doesnt really explain what it is, what it does, or how it stops your phone getting bricked..the only thing I do understand that it is a MUST if you want to flash your rom. Which incidently I have successfully done twice now!! ALthough I know the enclosed quote mentions some of its features, I dont even know what SPL is..!! doh!!!
So its on my phone (Orange's M3100 flavour)...!! Now I assume this will let me quite happily swap roms to my hearts content...? Would this also include the hopefully forthcomming official Tytn/Hermes WM6 rom??
Now with regards to unlocking the phone for any network provider, this is where the SuperCID comes in?? Have I not read that having having HardSPL-2.10 enables SuperCID...??
CURRENT FEATURES
-SuperCID ????
-no file signing required
-no password required to authenticate with bootloader
-bad NAND can be recovered with "task 2a"
-bad NAND can be recovered by flashing an OS
-SPL protected from all HTC retail SPLs being flashed by accident (to bypass, use SSPL)
-IPL protected from all flashes; protection against bogus NBH's
-bad NAND can again be checked for with "info 8"
-version displays 2.10.Olipro
-no longer tries to read bad NAND - should fix whitescreen issue
ChangeLog
Hard-SPL-2.10
-based on a newer SPL base; bugfixes.
-IPL flashing disabled to prevent bogus NBHs bricking your device.

When flashing roms, am I supposed to check the "Is it hard-SPL" and the "SPL-2.02/2.10 New Bootloader" in all instances???
ANy guidance would be great, jus tso I understand what Im doing, rahter than just doing it, albeit with success up to now!!
Thanks!!

Silly n00b questions

I almost feel embarrassed to ask this; I'm well up to date on firmware mods on other phones (mainly symbian), and being new to Windows mobile, some of the terminology is going straight over my head.
Could anyone explain (or point to a FAQ?) what SSPL, USPL and HardSPL actually are?
They're just the stuff you need to flash in order to change the ROM of your device.
It's like unlocking the device to accept new ROMs.
Much like how a SIM unlocker will allow you use other SIMs.

Question about flashing from SD card.

Okay I tried this once and believe I may have done it in the wrong order. I flashed the newest radio from dcd's list .50? before flashing the rom. was that wrong?
I ended up not being able to boot past the verizon splash screen.
also if I flash the rom first will it boot the os just with out a functioning radio? that way I can then just rename the radio image on my sd card from the phone and flash again?.
....Read the Titan Wiki.
....also before posting a new thread read existing threads where others may be EXACTLY where you are and stated the resolution -- here's a direct link to a only 9 hour old first page thread entitled 'Titan Upgrade help... ' that did just that.
...Also take to heart of a pertinent point from a leading forum sticky thread, 'NEED HELP?? LOOKING FOR GUIDES?? NEW?? Read the XDA-Wiki for the Titan before posting:'
Rather than rushing to post a new thread and then wait....you may solve problems more quickly by reading our recorded solutions to common issues, links to required files, and have guides to follow that have been compiled and edited by many of us.

...and finally to another leading sticky thread 'Official Titan Rom/Radio/SPL Compatibility List - PLEASE READ BEFORE FLASHING!!':
Failure to comply with this list may result in non working phone/data, may cause your device to enter into a reboot loop, or you may not be able to boot at all!!

I've looked through these links and not come across any that answer my question.
Can I flash everything from my phone without ever using activesync or a pc. what I don't know is if I can flash the rom then the radio all from my phone.
If you use 2.47 bootloader, which runs from the phone, then the rom and radio can be both flashed from the SD card. Then theoretically you can flash all 3 from the phone without needing activesync.
That said, if you are trying to flash back to stock, then the answer is no, because as far as I know there isn't a way to flash back the stock bootloaded without activesync.

how would it be done? I know to make sure the radio image is named titaimg.nbh
but does the roms image also need to be named that?
Yes they do.

You can flash back to stock from the card using Nuespl re-locker 2.07....
Do you have the correct bootloader installed?

Radio Update Not Allow?

Hello guys, I was reading this forum's topics about flashing a new radio, so I downloaded the 1.17....(the newest) and sent to the SDHC, did the down volume button with reset, the tricolour appeared, and tryied to start flashin', going to a silver view, but with 0% it came back the tricolour and said: NOT ALLOW
WTF?
Have you run the HardSPL yet and unlocked the SPL?
HardSPL is ALWAYS Recommended when flashing something thats CUSTOM with exception of a ROM from your mobile carrier
Please utilitize the posted resources....
I am not going to repeat the questions / answers that you can find somewhere.
Must read:
1. the first few posts of the HardSPL thread....

2. the first few posts of the radio thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=439566
3. the first few posts of "Flashing your First GSM ROM" thread....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448008
Please read FIRST, and THEN SEARCH those threads if you have questions. There is no need to start yet another thread because you haven't shown you have spend the effort in finding out yourself.
I have already flashed HardSPL one day, and by what I read, I need to flash it only one time, and the radio I am trying to flash is the original HTC radio, but the newest version... 1.17.....
Will I have to flash it again?
thanks

As long as u can confirm HardSPL is on your phone, there is no need to reflash it.

Returning Phone to Factory Settings

Ok so I am aware of the thread that was created awhile back on using RUU to return to stock, but that didn't quite answer my questions so I am asking this question here and hopefully others in the future will benefit.
I am in need of getting my phone back to factory shipped conditions to get it replaced by Verizon. My headphone jack does not work at all and I just started getting sim card errors which I cannot deal with. So I need to fix this ASAP. The problem I forsee is that since I used Super CID to unlock the phone it has the red text error on bootup that says "this build is for development purposes.....blah blah" I imagine that Verizon will see this and tell me I voided my warranty and it is not their problem anymore. Here are my questions.
1. If I use RUU will it remove this message from the startup splash screen?
2. I am S-off, do I need to be s-on before I do this or will RUU put me S-on
3. People were saying it says "relocked" instead of "locked" on the bootloader screen. Is this going to be a problem as well?
4. Will I be able to get unlock, root, and s-off on the replacement phone?
I am going to continue searching the forums in case the answer is out there spread throughout many posts, but if anyone knows the answer or can help I would greatly appreciate it. Knowing the answer to this will be very helpful to many people I suspect.

Beautiful. This is why I love the android community. So willing to help others. Thank you very much.
And to answer your last question, yes, you will be able to S-Off and Unlock your replacement phone.
There are 2 new methods available as of last week for 2.06 (latest firmware).
