Constant freezes, all resets are hard resets - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

So I've been bouncing around on roms for a while, following Titan Reloaded since 1.0 and then the 6.5 59 betas and now the 6.5 69 betas. I'm not sure if its due to the ROMs (if it is, I'm guessing its the 6.5 ones), but my phone has recently become totally unstable. No matter if I do a fresh build of a rom or a fresh flash, usually within 3 or so days (if it even lasts that long, sometimes it's only about 2 hours...) my phone will freeze up as in the power button will turn on/off the screen but everything will be frozen or the power button fails to turn on the screen. Any time I reset it when it's like this, it hard resets. So I usually flash the rom back, and resync (thank you, Google Sync!).
After getting sick of bad preformance in 59 (it was great when it lasted like 6 days before totally wigging out, see my posts in that thread) I decided to go back to 1.3.4 reloaded. I built a ROM with the kitchen, but after flashing it and waiting for the UC, I try to install my carrier cab and some apps. Usually 3 or so apps in, no matter what they are, I'll get an error can't install (for no reason) or can't install on the device itself (reprompts me to select the device or the storage card), or it'll start installing and then hang. Again, whenever I try to reset, it does a hard reset, and I have to wait for it to go again.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm getting really frustrated..
PS. Anyone know if I add insurance to my VZW account for this phone, can I make a claim right away? I'll pay a $50 deductible to get something else, even if it's another refurb Titan. 6 months after having it, half the keyboard mysteriously stopped working...)

You have to add insurance within 15 days of buying the phone.

I had the same type of problem. Reflash your phone with 1.3.4, but once you are done with the flashing/letting the customization finish, pull the battery out and let it sit for a minute or two. Then give it a try. I bet it works for you, it did for me.

i had a very similar issue with titan reloaded 1.3.4. after a little use, (varying amounts of time/activity, just like you) i would have to soft-reset the device but then it would initiate a full reset. after much frustration i flashed to another rom (skip's i believe) and then caved in and flashed back to reloaded 1.3.4 for the manila 2d perfomance. since then, which has been about 4 days, i have not had any of the erratic behavior of before. i soft reset all day long (unfortunately it seems like its just life as usual with the mogul ) but it never goes into the hard reset cycle like before.
if i remember correctly, i had flashed 6.5 roms before flashing to 1.3.4 so that might have something to do with it.

I have been experiencing the same thing for a few days now with 1.3.4. The first time I had tried 1.3.4 the rom was stable but after trying the latest 6.5 rom it has been doing this even after re-flashing to 1.3.4 repeatedly. I am going to try 1.3.3 and see if this stops. I'm glad I saw this post, I thought I was going crazy. Hopefully somone will figure out a solution. I will try mcorgan10's solution and see if it helps.

I had the exact same problem on 1.34.
I gave up after reflashing 5x and just went with DCD 4.12.
No problems with it at all. Super fast. Super clean.

Sounds like there are multiple issues with the hard reseting. I have been running all reload 1.x.x . When I got to the 1.3.3 before I flashed to it (since I was in flash mode) I thought I would try 6.5 first to investigate. After that I flashed 1.3.3 and I also got hard resets while installing apps at random. So here is what I did. I decided to flash the 1.4 beta 2 and everything is great after unchecking footprints in m2dc.(memory hog) I have been running the beta since its release with no issue at all.
I bought another mogul which had dcd 3.3.4 so I flashed it to 1.3.4
Flashed rom via usb. while titan reload screen was present did a hard reset.
booted up and let customizations run. soft reset the phone after 15 minutes. Then I installed my apps. I have been running the 1.3.4 for well over a week now and have had no issues at all.
Hopefully someone could find this problem that so many are having. I do take my battery out and replace it with a fully charged one before I flash. Wish I could give more info but that is my senario.

I tried the battery thing and also reflashed to 1.3.3. less than 24 hours and the phone froze. Then it hard rest when I soft rest the phone. I wonder if this is something I'm loading in the kitchen. I flash without the kitchen and see if that helps.

I hate to say it, but I'm glad I'm not the only one with these problems, as I too thought I was going crazy.
So it seems that the pretty common thing is that we all used some of the 1.3.x branch, tried 6.5, and switched back.
Battery: I tried this, hard reset 10 mins after I put the battery back in. After redoing the process over again, I was able to install the carrier cab for data, and sync my contacts back, and then I left it. As I went to plug the phone in and set the alarm, I noticed it was frozen, the screen was off. Battery wasn't dead either.
Reflashing: I've tried flashing to 6.5 5.9 b4 (built in a kitchen) and back to 1.3.4. I'm about to sit down and try the nuerom (never have) or DCD 4.1.2. I'll update later on this.
And fwiw, I flash using the sd card, and never have over USB.
edit

I rolled back to the stock verizon radio and rom last night. So far I have had no problems. I'll stay with this a couple of days and try 1.3.4 again. I do think the problem was related to switching back and forth between 6.1 and 6.5 roms. I just glad I saw this post.

[Q] Problems with flashing, every ROM I try... PLEASE HELP!

No matter what ROM I try some where down the line (either 1 week, or 1 month etc) i always get the same result. Which is that htc sense stops loading. I have no idea what the problem is and its quite frustrating. i soft-reset, nothing, i turn off sense and turn it back on, nothing. always the same problem. has anyone encountered this before?
Can you give more information? Like what radio version do you use? Does a hard reset tempory help it? What things did you change before this occured?
Yes, I had this happen too. Ultimately, I put the stock ROM back on with the stock radio - kept happening. Sent it back and got a refurbed unit. Absolutely no problems now.
Im having tha same problem
Try Task 29 and then new ROM
Although there is not much of a description of the problem, I strongly believe you may have re-flashed custom ROMs without doing a Task29 which "cleans" the internal FLASH ROM. If this would happen to be the case you get these types of problems where suddenly the Phone just shuts down. Even after HardReset you will only be able to run for a limited time before the phone freezes again.
So give Task29 a shot and see if it helps.
Ps: Also try using a recommended RadioROM for a particular custom ROM.

ive used task 29 every time ive flashed over the months, so its not that... ive used every single reccomended for each radio rom but always the same outcome.
what could it be? ive got a little feeling its got something to do with CHT, as its only when i play around with it alot that it happens.
Same, here. Thought it was my energy ROM but have tasked 29, tried different ROMS from different chefs and radios, taken SD card out all together, only works for a matter of minutes before sense freezes and needs a battery reset, very frustrating - any other suggestions?
I did experience similar issues. In my case I've been using Artemis series of ROM v23, 25 and 28. In my case I did not use T29 the first couple of times. When using v28 of about couple of weeks sense would stop running. In my case it happened after receiving an MMS where I subsequently had to pull the battery to reboot. Ones on reboot I noticed in the file manager that the internal ROM was filled with strange symbols and unrecognizable file names. I did a HardReset to clean up (I thought). The filesystem looked okay, but after that HR Sense would run for a few minutes depending on whether I tried to re-install contacts and settings or left it be. After every freeze I had to do a HR to actually be able to reboot, otherwise it would stop at the orange screen.
What I've done is to upgrade to HSPL3 (2.08 HSPL), TASK 29 and install the latest V.30 (I reckon in a few days it is obsolete ones again ) Now everything is rosy-dandy and running like a clock (knock wood).
I'm using Radio 2.09.51.03_2 on Artemis 30 (NOR). Phone is about 8 months now, and I have not had any problems until a week ago where the above happened.
Fingers crossed!
Still running good...
just to follow up... phone is still working good so it seems Task 29 is indeed a necessary thing to do.

T-Bolt is reboot central, wait for the OTA update?

So I've had less than stellar luck with this phone. I purchased it and rooted it pretty much on day 1, (this was back in early May) and immediately started seeing some pretty awful rebooting. I switched kernels from Das Bamf's to Imoseyon's, which helped it go from mind-numbing to merely bad (used to reboot EVERY TIME the screen was slept and turned back on, went to happening maybe once an hour)
I switched back to stock, same problem, rebooting literally once an hour. I called Verizon for troubleshooting help and they immediately had me switch it out for a Hardware version 2.0 phone, which I've now had since May 15th. It does work a lot better, but it's still pretty bad. Here's the timeline:
Ran stock for about a week, was seeing 1 reboot every other day, decided to root. Installed BAMF remix 1.7 with the .7/.6 CDMA/LTE radio, which left it pretty much the same, rebooting every 30 hours or so. It's particularly likely to do it when using Navigation or on phone calls. It's not a stress thing, I can run Linpack, quadrant, make calls and surf, whatever, it runs fine at stock speeds, 1.92, 1.92x... and will do so for hours without rebooting (until it does)
Switched to 2.0 w/ the MR2 radio, and the reboots were even worse. Now more like 1-2 times a day. Thinking this was not a radio issue now, I eased down the clock speed (I was running 1.92x kernel) down to stock speeds, no affect. Upped the voltage by switching to 1.92, still no affect, reboots a couple of times day, ALSO with a few random shutdowns thrown in for fun. I tried Standard as well, letting it top out at 1.4, still having the issue.
MR2.5 came out, switched to that, and it became unuseable. Reboots literally every 5-10 minutes, and I tried running it that way for the better part of a day, thinking it was maybe the kernel settling or whatever, but it stayed that bad. I switched back to 2.0 and kept seeing the reboots a couple of times a day, so since they were worse on GB I figured I'd go back to Froyo.
Loaded 1.8 Remix, and the reboots are still happening a few times day. At my wit's end, I decided to go straight back to stock, no root. It ran fine that way for about a day, then randomly shutdown again. It has seemed good so far today, but the random shutdown happening makes me assume it's still not stable.
I really don't think it's a problem with 2 phones in a row, and there's thousands of posts of people experiencing similar problems, so it's not something weird I'm particularly doing. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, as some people are rock solid with Froyo with the .7 radios, or the .6/.7 combo, or some are fine with Gingerbread MR2, or even 2.5. Me, I have no luck with ANYTHING.
Should I start another ticket with Verizon for another dud phone, or is the promised OTA update really going to do something magical that MR 2 or 2.5 haven't already tried to do to fix this thing?
If it were me Id be screaming at somebody at Verizon. If your sure that nothing u did rooting or flashing roms caused the reboots then get a new phone. Rumors say that gingerbread is coming tomorrow but you can't out to much stock in that and even if it does I doubt there is any miracle code written in that's gonna help you.

Some people have had random reboots on stock rom. But since you were on stock for less than a day, it's impossible to determine whether the reboots are due to a defective phone or something that happened during/after you flashed the custom rom. You obviously know your way around various roms, radios & kernel/cpu tweaks, and nothing seems to help. If you have the patience, go to the IRC channel for more suggestions. If no one there can help, I would restore to stock & exchange the phone. You may have a defective device that will never work right.

[Q] Is my GS2 broken?

I've had my GS2 since launch and had Litening Rom pretty much weeks after that.
I've not flashed anything in the last 4/5 weeks but I keep getting the following problems
1. Black screen when waking phone up, soft keys light up and vibrate, so the phone is on but the screen is black. This is my main problem! Sometimes the status bar will show and is draggable but the rest of the screen is black. Sometimes the phone wont turn on and is quite hot. If I restart the phone I can do what I like but soon as I leave it for a few mins I cant get back on. It's also produced a black screen when the screen is on just by me touching the screen.
Its not overclocked it running stock voltages, I unistalled Go launcher and various other apps, I've restored it to a month old back up which I've used before with no problems, this gave me lots of FC's which I sorted but the black screen problem and not being able to get the phone back on without restarting is still present... I've tried re-flasing Litening Rom, I've tried a different kernel and I've wipe all data/factory reset etc etc...
Can anyone help?
Your best bet is to go completely back to a stock ROM ensuring everything really is wiped/factory reset, don't restore anything at all and see if you still have problems. If you're unable/unwilling to do that, you're probably best posting in the Lite'ning thread.
Is all support gone from Litening Rom thread? It think you can get more help over there.
I was too slow.
I don't think it's the rom. It's been stable at 6.1 for months.

Fantastic. Well I wish you good luck troubleshooting then.
I'm not ignoring your advice, I will try restoring the stock rom.
how many apps installed? I have this kind of black screen problem since 2.3.5. It is caused by having more than 300+ apps.
Never had that many, did a full wipe so I only have stock apps at the minute.

[Q] HOw many days do you guys go without a restart?

Lately I have been observing lags/freeze-ups after just 1 day of use on my stock 351 streak!
(yeah- I do have tonnes of apps - but still!)
I mean I am observing the screen tilt ( after physical rotation ) is also sloww!
Only link I could find, that was- my restart interval was like 3 days or so.
I am restarting it once in 2 days now ( manually).
But, still - the lags/freeze-ups are getting more frequent!
I have case for the Streak- so its very annoying to open it all the time to pull out battery!
So- I have factory reset it now.
Will now check the performance. But- I am sure getting a feeling its getting slower
thought of checking here- whats the restart interval?
and
Are freeze-ups common? -- ( no much crashes though) just- freeze-ups.
Thanks,
Sony.
I never ran a stock rom long enough to find out. If you want to stick with Froyo, since it sounds like you want stability, go with either my Streakin' 354, or Simple Streak. I wents days, maybe even a week, without a restart and when I did it was because of theming or something that required me going into streakmod.
If you want to stick with stock, then you may just have to resign yourself to manually restarting once a day. I used to have a profile set up in Tasker to do just that, before I found a stable rom that I liked.
Odd. Other than a brief switch to StreakDroid 2.4.4, I've run stock ROMs and have had only one occasion where it was necessary to forcibly shut down and reboot the Streak.
For the most part I only reboot mine every once in a blue moon. Like Morph, I have to reboot for a new theme or boot animation. But I run my streak with minimal apps loaded besides stock ones from Rom. (Total including stock apps 102) Mine doesn't lag after a few days.
Each phone and User is different. Sounds like a cliche' but ask 100 Streakers, and you might get 100 different answers.
Once a week
I'm stock, rooted, 2.2.2
I reboot once a week, regardless of if it isn't causing a problem.
Sunday before bed, I just pop the back cover, take out the battery
and reboot it.
I haven't had any lock up's or anything, but I'm not into playing streaming
music/videos/games.
I use it mainly as a phone & for work. 20-25 emails per day, 5-10 text messages,
viewing PDF's, web pages etc.
I'm currently running StreakDroid 2.4.4 and have gotten up to 60+ hours of uptime. Even then I only needed to reboot cause I was tweakin' the thing.
I've found my stability MUCH better after installing SetCPU (245min, 998maz, ondemand) and autokiller (all advanced tweaks enabled with aggressive profile activated at bootup)
but like people have said, you have to play with settings, cpu governors... to get your Streak stable. They're all different. I'm currently on my fourth. The one I'm on now is rock solid but the one before was a MESS. It could NOT handle overclocking and constantly had wifi/sleep of death problems.
Just like a baby... keep trying things til something works!
Up until the latest Gingerbread ROMs I've always found stock to be the most stable and had it running for upwards of 2 weeks without reboot. I've since found the new GB ROMs to be super stable but with tweaking and running out of battery i've had no longer than a week of late. I've got abut 200 apps installed
I reboot mine all the time. Not necessarily because of any problem, just to freshen it up I guess. I have a widget on my home screen, and if I'm doing something CPU intensive, when I'm done I'll just hit the button and stick it back in my pocket. When I pull it out- fresh Streak!
Why not...
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
I flashed 2.3 straight away and I have never had a lockup....
I didn't have a freeze with 2.4.4 either. The camera didn't work properly however (white screen) which is why I went back to stock. I haven't tried the other ROMs yet so....
Thanks!
Thanks to all for super-prompt replies!
And, I have just done a factory reset.
and, yeah- this was the only phone with me-- so I did not go for root/flash yet.
But- I have a spare fone now ( HTC P3400! my trusty old friend!--ROMs flashed like flash on a camera!)
I have read quite some information on flashing streaky dear-- just some catching up to do.
and, lordmorphous -- I am a fan already Simple Streak looks awesome
Strephon - yeah- I find it odd too! but now- lets see what happens-- I will test this |clean| stock rom for weeks time -and then jump to Simple streak.
Gregionis- I had similar number of apps on stock-- will check now.
All - thanks for the help!
Keep Streakin'

Hi
I usea programme called fast reboot. Its great to clean ram up from various appliications.

Fast Reboot is an excellent tool. I had it when I was using AdFree to implement the host file changes. After switching to AdAway, which has a full reboot routine included in the app, I still use Fast Reboot.
Weeks at a time
Hi!
I run simplestreak 1.3, before i used simplestreak 1.2. Cant remember any problems really. Now looking into 2.3 roms, mainly because its.. too stable and no thrills at all.
Maybe because i am alamoust religious when it comes to flashing. Going all trhe way all resets and wipes and all of it. Alaways.
Just a GRAND thanks to all!
Thanks to all - BIG time.
I took this problem forward- and got my Streak replaced!
and, now- this is really a fast one!!
I dont remember My streak being this fast in past 8 months!!
-- I guess, it is right! " No two streaks are the same!"
Now- I will check the uptime- but I already see the speed!
--
So, this is my 3rd streak in last 11 months!
But, I love this phone!!
CAnt wait to get on the flashing wagon now!!
In a weeks time
Thanks to all!!
Sony.
Gingerstreak 2.4.4 installed for around a month now I think. Not a single forced reboot and it hasn't frozen either.
I have rebooted manually a couple of times whilst sorting the battery meter out but this is the most stable the thing has been since I got it in July last year! I've previously had stock 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, Streakdroid 1.5.3, 1.8.1 and 1.9.1 and couldn't get it stable on any of them. Finally after nearly 18 months it works as it should!
It lives next to the bed overnight on standby and has woken up and sounded my alarms every day without fail since going to 2.4.4
The only thing I seem to be able to point to that i've done differently is SetCPU running 576/1113 lagfree. If I go higher it doesn't like it on previous builds (including 2.4.3) so i've not tried it on this one. Going lower seemed to cause issues for me too so maybe the various stability problems people experience are CPU / governor related? We know that they all have varying max clock speeds so I wonder if they have varying minimums too?

[Q] recently updated radios..

So I was pretty faithful to MIUI because of a lot of reasons, but i couldn't easily switch between 2 calls when i had a couple people on the line... Being that i use my phone a lot for business, I decided to go back to Sense as it's very easy and straight forward in terms of call switching...
I decided on Meanrom because of all the hype about the speed, battery life, etc...
I went to this thread and followed these instructions:

Before you Install, prepare:
2.17.651.5 ROMs need the latest firmware. See freeza's all in one firmware update if you haven't done that already. If you unlocked via the HTC method, you know the drill: you'll have to take the OTA and then re-unlock.
If you are already running an older version of MeanROM, you should be OK just flashing this ROM without a full wipe, BUT...
If you have any trouble at all, do a super wipe and then install the above firmware and this ROM
Go to "Menu", "Settings", "Power" and UNcheck "Fast Boot". When you reboot or power off the phone, you really want it to reboot/power-off. This can save you a lot of headaches.

Since then, my phone will randomly lock up completely requiring a battery pull to restart it. (not even vol-up+vol-down+power is working)
sometimes it locks while the screen is on, sometimes while off... red light usually flashes when it locks with screen off....
after a lockup it seems like the battery loses like 25% or more once rebooted.
It seems like its usually after a call, or switching on/off Wifi, etc.
Battery life on this phone has never been worse!
Thinking that my issues were with the rom, i tried infected rom, same issue, then i went back to MIUI.... still same issues...
Anyway.... Different roms, different Kernels, same problems, leads me to think that this is a radio issue... anyone point me in the right direction??
I am on the verge of smashing this piece of **** with a large hammer if i can't get it fixed... so save a phone, and my sanity, please.
thanks!
Unfortunately I don't have any answers as I just s-offed/rooted my phone for the first time tonight, but considering I am planning on installing the same firmware upgrades/rom, you wouldn't happen to know if your Evo is HBOOT 1.3/1.4?
I have read about firmware issues with 1.5 elsewhere, but I've got a Nand backup and HBOOT 1.4 so I'm feeling lucky.

if your talking about meanrom's ICS build: Chad had a fix for this that didnt require flasing rogue firmware - but he had to remove it from XDA. some of the newer ics roms may work w/ older firmware.. if not, search for chads ics test kernel.
