New member, where do i start? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

Hello,
I'm a new member. I just bought my Mda vario 2. I saw the vario was the same as HTC Hermes, so i would like to upgrade my vario to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428597 rom.
My current rom is the original shipped WM5 and the device is already sim-unlocked i think. My pc has vista installed. Ive already read alot of threads on this forum, but i really dont know where to start and i really dont want to brick my new vario.
Also is that rom good or does anyone recommend an other rom thats more stable/faster/better looking?
P.s sorry for my bad english, im Dutch.
Thanks,
Chris

Welcome to your new addiction!
Start by checking out the Announcement at the top of the forum, and then visit the Hermes Wiki.
Take your time reading everything, and you will have no worries about bricking your device.

Upgrading individual ROM's

I'm really new to upgrading mobile devices and have a little problem here. I live in Germany but am English speaking and have a T-Mobile MDA Vario II with the German ROM's installed on it.
From my understanding I have to leave the radio ROM for Germany in it but can upgrade the OS and Config/Settings ROM's to English/WWE. I have been looking at all the guides, FAQ's, and other forum posts and still am not confident in what exactly I am to do when needing to upgrade only 2 of the 3 ROM's (I'm afraid I will wipe out the radio ROM).
Can somebody please explain or link me to the process of how to leave the German radio ROM untouched on my device but upgrade the others to English?
Thanks guys & gals!
-Travis
Hi,
you don't need to keep the RadioROM.
I'm also living in germany and have the english Cingular RadioROM installed.
Be careful before flashing a ROM with a new bootloader version. Please read my Post Making upgrading and unlocking a bit clearer
Thank you.

Is this the ROM nr ?

Hi to all
I bought few days ago a new HTC TyTn. That's my first pocket pc with phone.
When I start my HTC I see the following information:
R 1.03.03.10
Is this the ROM nr. ? Is it a new or old one ? I have a HERM200 with QWERTZ (german) could somebody tell me, which is the newest ROM version ?
many thanks
Sorry ROM nr. is 1.18.257.2
Is this the newest one ?
Hi
Can somebody help me ? I'm a newbie regarding HTC. What should I do to update my system ?
Many thanks
wiki
Check the wiki.....
I checked already wicki....but I don't know which version is the right one. I have a swiss HTC with qwertz.....
No Branding...original HTC....
I'd suggest you to study the Wiki and the forum by yourself. You can force people to briefly answer you, but then there is a big chance you'll create one more (because you didn't learn how to read lots of existing!) thread on how to return your bricked device to the life.
But I don't know which one i should take.....
I have checked my actual ROM with the one you have on your download page. The one I have is actual...(i think)...but it is in german.
I really do not have any idea which one i should download and install....could somebody help me ?
You know what, I do not update my TyTn.
I'm really p***** off.
Kind regards
First thing you have to do is READ:
Hermes Upgrading For Beginners: A Quick Introduction to upgrading your Hermes ROM
There are several ROM upgrades available for the Hermes, you can find them in the Shipped Complete Updates wiki page, be sure to read the notes on this page before you start the ROM upgrade.
Please do NOT ask which is the best ROM for you, the Hermes upgrading forum is flooded with this question and we can't really give you an answer: a ROM upgrade is only as good as the comments it has received from the users on the forums, see the top right column of the Shipped Complete Updates table for each ROM's forum link.

But as hellejoep and Lurker0 have told you, you need to read the wiki first, otherwise your next post will be another one of the "HELP ME... MY HERMES IS DEAD". You say this is your 1st PocketPC phone, then START HERE: Hermes For Beginners and after that be sure to read the rest of the hermes wiki.

If you already followed our directions, have read all around upgrading and flashing, and still asks, then just stop thinking about upgrading yourself. Go to your local service and ask them to do the upgrade for you to the latest official ROM that exists fro your devie... if any!
If you didn't - then go ahead reading and learning.

WM6 Loose Warranty?

Hi, I have just bought myself the MDA Vario II obviously on T-Mobile, I have a years warranty with it, Is there anyway to make a full backup of my Vario with WM5 on incase i ever need to take the phone back to T-Mobile and because I have put WM6 on it voids my warranty? I am from the UK and there is currently no WM6 ROM on the t-mobile UK site.
WM5
There are full WM5 ROMs from T-Mobile Vario II users in the wiki on this site you can download and re-flash you WM6 device mate.
so say i tried installing WM6 and it messed up, leaving me with no OS on the phone, i could then just install the WM5 ROM?from t-mobile?
I had a loose warranty, so I stapled it to a stack of paper
there is really no need for you to try being funny. i asked a serious question, i wanted a serious answer.

Lighten up mate; legitimate play on your words. You said "Loose Warranty" when you meant "Lose Warranty".
Anyroad you can go back to a version of WM5 should you feel the need. You cannot backup and restore your rom in the way that you are implying.
My strong advice to you is to read as much as possible on here on both Upgrading and Downgrading. When you are ABSOLUTELY sure you know what you are doing then proceed. If you don't do this then you will probably permanently damage your phone.
There are some essential things you must do first to ensure safe upgrading.
A good starting place to gain this knowledge is the wiki.
Good luck.

sorry...need quick upgrading help

Hey guys. I just bought a Hermes, switching from a Wizard. I just wanted to make sure i've got the facts straight. So to upgrade the ROM on my Hermes (which is currently a stock At&t WM5 8525 ROM) i need to first CID/Sim-Unlock the phone, flash a hardspl to it, and then i can flash any wm6 rom i want that is posted in the WM6 forum for the Hermes? Thanks, and sorry again for the post. One of the guides said if i was unsure about anything, i should ask.
Read the last post, should also apply to your question. Also, great guides on the first page

T-Mobile UK - Original Firmware

Hi guys,
I need to send my MDA Vario II in for repairs, and I'm currently running a WM6 upgrade. Obviously they won't be too pleased with this, so I'd like to return it to its original T-Mobile WM5 state.
I *know* there's bound to be a thread about it already, and I'm sorry, I haven't been able to find it!
If someone could point me in the direction of the original ROM, I'd be very, very grateful!
Many thanks,
Gav
EDIT: My apologies! I just found that T-Mobile UK have the WM6 firmware on their site now! How times have changed! That should be OK for returning it, shouldn't it? After all, I only have a problem with the screen, not the software...

I suggest you flash their version of WM6 before sending it back though. They might not be too happy about a cooked ROM especilly if it's going in for a warranty repair.

Hey m8 i hav sent like 5-6 hermes back all with custom roms, and they replaced it with no question after a couple of weeks of repairing
I know it's been said before but don't forget TM's WM6 ROM: http://member.htc.com/RuuDownload/T-mobile/TMobileWM6Step1-TMUK.aspx?country=UK
(via tm-phonedownloads.com) - I'm running it right now partly out of laziness (and because the cooked ROMs on here didn't quite have all the elements I wanted, so I flashed the TM ROM while I made my mind up about which ROM I'd go with... And I've not reflashed yet!)
