I've noticed that when using TeleNav / ATT Navigator, my battery doesn't charge.
I do a soft reset and stop using GPS, the battery begins to charge.
This has happened with several Roms, so this leads me to believe that it's an equipment issue. I don't know if I'm alone with this issue.
Something like this is easy to overlook. The only reason I noticed is because I had to use GPS a lot more than usual and my battery went out while it was supposed to be charging.
If you're using any type of GPS, take a look. If you're good or not, just state what you use.

Mine will charge when I am using Garmin or GoogleMaps.... I have noticed that if the phone gets to warm it will still discharge even if it is plugged in. Keep an eye on the temperature of your phone!

I've got my phone mounted on a spare belt clip i attached to my dashboard and ive noticed the same thing. there comes a time after it's been charging for a while when the light stops "breathing" but the battery is not fully charged. As far as GPS, i figured it wasted battery faster than it could charge, since i also have bt and the display stays on. I've been meaning to try it with an A/C charger in the car instead of the 12VDC. I'll let you know if theres any difference.

I noticed the HEAT, my TILT did the same thing but it charged. The only issue I had with the TILT is when the battery is under 30%, I would have pull out the battery before it decided to charge.

I'm using a mount also (15'' Gooseneck non-winshield). It starts out charging and then stops. I'll try with an AC adapter also just to see what happens.
There maybe something to this GPS & Charging......

I have the Ac charger in my car and it works wonders. If I run more than three things at once then it will stop charging. All it take is a soft reset. Then all is well. As most said keep an eye on the temp. BTW I am using Energy's 2.0 040509 build with TomTom 7.915(9196)

Noticed the same thing on a six hour car trip. I use a gooseneck windshield mount and have Garmin XT and bluetooth to the stereo all the time. After a couple hundred miles it stopped charging and the backlight goes off, making it a pain in the ass for looking at the GPS screen, any suggestions? are u using a ac adapter and than plugging in your home charger? BTW am using an old Motorola car charger from the early RZR days.

No difference if you use a 12v or a 110v charger.
The TP warms up and at a certain temperature shuts off the charging so it will not extra over heat.
I place my TP where the AC can cool it down and since then - it will charge for hours.

That's freaking hilarious. I do the same thing. I notices my Fuze would stop charging when plugged into my car charger if it got too hot, so I simply positioned it where my AC would hit it. Now I don't have that problem anymore.
I tried the AC charger in the car....same thing.
Tried Google Maps also. Basically when I use GPS, charging stops when the device got warm. My device didn't take long to get warm....about 2 minutes.
There's gotta be away around this other than placing it on the air vents. The TILT performed much better with GPS.
my results
finally got a good long run with gps on I-95 and this is what I found:
1. According to tBattery, the 110V charger and the 12VDC charger were the same as far as charge being + 100 with the gps on, so the battery would still be charged if gps is running with the screen almost full brightness, BT on and a data connection.
2. Also according to tBattery, the temperature got to above 46 degrees when I noticed the phone was no longer charging, whereas at home it rarely gets over 33 degrees. The current showed more than 300 negative under these conditions.
SO technically, once the phone stops charging due to temperature, the GPS with screen full on and all the rest tend to drain the battery. Even if the phone is plugged in to the charger. If only it would stop charging the battery but at least take power for the device from the charger, that would have been good.
So I'm going to reposition the device on my dash to where the AC vents can hit it as others have done!
I have two different chargers in my car. The one that will charge my touch pro while running GPS navigation is 5V/1A. The one, that will not charge while navigating has 5V/500mA (which is max. USB-power according to the specs).
Since TP's GPS consumes approximately 500mA (I've read that somewhere on the internet), there will not be enough power to charge. Keep an eye on this.
I went on a 1Hr trip....
AC Adapter-Got hot in about 8 minutes...stop charging, reset needed
Cig Adapter-Got hot in about 8 minutes also...stop charging, reset needed
Aimed the AC on the device...Device charged the whole trip.
Bottom line....Keep it cool!
Lithium Ion batteries in devices all do this as far as I know. I remember back when I used my Dell Axim x51v for navigation is when I found this out for the first time. It would sit in direct sunlight on my dash and quit charging within about 5 minutes of use. One time during the winter I noticed when I didn't turn my heater on that it charged for much longer. Then the light bulb went off in my brain.
Same thing went for my Q9H, Tilt, and now Fuze. A lil air from the vent helps a lot, and keeping it out of the sunlight is an even better option.

When I am using Google Maps Navigation with the GPS running and full 3G signal, the phone barely charges at all. Depending on screen brightness it can actually drain the battery(slower than when not connected to a charger).

I bought the SE car charger (http://bit.ly/k7udKw), the price was a bit steep (20 euros or so) but it works like a charm. I use Sygic Aura navigation and the battery meter still increases over time. Not fast, but it doesn't stay put or decrease either, so I'm all in all happy with it.

And make sure you set your phone dock near the air conditional if you open GPS map, it'll get hot and your battery won't last long while it gets hotter even you charge it.
I bought my charger on Internet auction for about 2 Euros (some crappy China stuff) It works like a charm. And yes, battery gets very hot when I use navigation so I mount my phone holder near AC vents.
There must be a reason for the severe heat in the x10.
even in ultra low temperatures it overheats a lot.
So i finally remembered to check my car charger and it is a 1amp charger. I've just upgraded my rom to the one listed in my sig and the phone is much better on battery, so hopefully it charges better in the car now.
Had my phone docked in the car for 20minutes and it charged from 82% to 95% with the GPS on and Google Maps following my route. Pretty happy with that sort of performance.

it charge fast and it can charge another USB device like an iphone or my MW600 bluetooth... it can even charge my x10 to 100% while GPS navigation is on. my previous car charge doesnt do that, it can only hold my battery % without letting it drop if GPS navigation is on. so if my battery is 30% i'll get 30% after i disconnect and stop using the GPS navigation...

I've bought this one a while ago for 7 bucks (including shipping). Had just a few chances to use it, but all times it was really sunny and hot outside and the phone just stops charging because it becomes extremely hot. I would stick the mount somewhere near the gear stick, but it won't stay on any other surface than glass
It was a quite funny adventure when we were travelling to a big city with intense traffic and really complicated streets. So I am using the GPS to find the hotel we booked, it's really hot, I just keep going - didn't know that the phone stops charging when it's hot - so we finally arrive at our destination, I start to reach the phone with my hand and it just turns off, because the battery is dead. Yeah, did some driving around this weekend using Google Maps Navigation. Had my X10 plugged into the charger that came with my Jabra Cruiser speakerphone. Despite the charging light being on the whole time, by the time I arrived at my destination my phone had >5% battery. I checked the charger, and it's only 500mA.
Ordered this charger from Monoprice.com (was ordering some cables anyway). The price was good, and specs say it outputs 1A. Will let you know how it works out when I get it.

The problem is that sometime, the charger will charge very well, meaning I can listen to music, have the navigation active, and twitter, G+ updating as usual, the battery is charging around 1% per minute, but on other time, the battery will slowly drain, same setup.
I've noticed something yesterday btw, the phone was in a battery draining phase, then it appears that the phone lost his network connection, then it came back, and the phone started to charge well.
Is that an issue related to the car charger or could it be a "bug" in the phone software ?

The phone limits the charging current at a max of about 700mA.
Sometimes the radio eats thru the battery quite heavily in low signal area's.
The charging current just plainly cannot keep up with the total usage.

You can try that.
In some cases it works in other cases it does not.
I have had my X10 for nearly 2 years now and i have tried about 5 different car chargers until finally settling on a SE original.
I use my x10 with google nav all day long as i am a service engineer and i have found the only way to get it to work for a full day is to mount it directly infront of one of the air vents blowing cold air over it while plugged in to the charger. Without this the phone will get too hot and start discharging especially on a warm day.
Using 2g and low brightness can help as well.

LOL. The X10 was released in late March 2010. So unless you had an early development model, you've had your X10 for 16 months at most.

Yeah, I learned how crazy heat will build up in this phone if using it for nav a few weeks back, when in about 75 minutes of driving I drained my battery fully and the phone was registering at 54°C from sitting on my sun-beaten dash while navigating.
I thinking I'm going to try to build some sort of shade over my car holder to keep the X10 out of the sun, and maybe help channel some of the AC more directly onto it.
Forgive me if this has already been discussed or is supposed to be common knowledge, but is the GPS supposed to eat up all of the electricity being conducted by the charger? I am running stock everything with nothing but some basic services and have not seen 1% increase on my battery in 3hrs of being charged. I know the charger is not the issue. I used my car and Mac Book Pro with no change.

It comes down to a few things. I can't say for sure if it has this same affect on car chargers (I can't see why it wouldn't) but when I used my Motorola wall charger with an aftermarket micro-USB cable, I saw extremely diminished current reaching the battery. Just using the phone with brightness on max pretty much counteracted any charging I was getting from the outlet and at some points I was even seeing the battery DRAIN much like you are.
That being said, GPS is extremely taxing on the battery. When you combine that constant GPS lock with data streaming over 3G, along with the heat of sitting in sunlight in your car, well it takes a toll on the battery. Assuming you're using the proper car charger designed for the Thunderbolt and the proper cable, well then there's nothing else that can be done. It's a game of current in vs current out. I know for a fact that just by using the 3G data connection with screen brightness on max my battery draws roughly 400mAh. Add in a GPS lock and extra heat and that can easily reach 600+. Your car charger has to send more than 700mA to the phone in order to gain charge and not just break even.
I'm having issues with this too, but I found a thread in the accessories forum about a rapid charger from Motorola that seems to work for our TB even with GPS use.

I travelled from the midwest to the west coast on vacation driving in my car a couple of weeks ago. Used my phone for both GPS and Pandora (surprisingly great 3g coverage across half the country).
Had the phone plugged into a 3rd party generic charger all the way and never once had an issue with phone not charging.

Did you happen to notice if Google Maps was eating a larger percentage of your battery? Mine recorded a 46% screen and 37% Maps usage. (I left it unplugged for about 5 min. With the screen on while reading the XDA)

Yeah I figured it would be like that, but what didn't make since I was able to charge an iPad with my Mac while it was in use. With a little Google[ing], I found that my thunderbolt was only drawing the 500 mah. I then found that the iPad does some voodoo and receives an extra bundle of 500 mah. Now... how to tap into this?

Sorry, did not keep track of the usage, but I do know that my phone did not run hot at all (which is usually a sign of extreme power drain while charging).

For those of you who have the wireless charger. Do you notice a significant battery life shortage when you charge the phone using the wireless charger? Ever since I use the wireless charger, the battery life doesn't seem to last as long as charging the phone using the traditional route.

I just got mines today from AT&T. Will keep an eye on how it last and let ya know.
I've been using the charging stand for a week or so and haven't noticed any difference.
I've been using mine for over a week, and I've noticed the phone charges faster than with the USB cable (to the wall outlet), and the battery charge seems to last just as long... maybe you have a bad battery?
also, I found this on wikipedia about the qi standard: "Regulation of the output voltage is provided by a digital control loop where the power receiver [phone] communicates with the power transmitter[charger] and requests more or less power. "

I've actually seen a slight improvement when using the charging plate. Through my typical usage during the day (7 a.m. through 6 p.m.) I was coming home with 50% battery. Now, I'm coming home with about 70%.
Don't be too impressed though. I don't use push on anything at all, and I don't use any kind of social media.
I'm betting you have a defective unit. My first 920 did exactly this. I would set in on the plate, take note of the battery percentage, take a 10 minute shower, come back, and the percentage jumped from 88% to 100%. There's no way it could charge that fast. Not even the USB cable can charge it that quickly and that charges at a higher amperage and voltage than the plate. Sometimes I saw it jumping from 95% to 100% in a matter of seconds. So I called AT&T and after countless hours of talking with employees that knew nothing, I finally was put on to someone who helped me get the phone exchanged. My new 920 does not have this problem and a full charge on the plate lasts just as long as on the plug. My first 920 barely made it 8 hours with normal use (texting mostly). My new 920 makes it past my 8 hour shift with 75% to spare.
Had to replace mine. White light on the plate came on but no response on phone. Wireless charging coil was faulty... Inductive charging failed and that sucks... It wasn't a bad flaw but when I spend 450 I want a functioning device. Now, I have it.

Today I took my DNA for a spin using google maps. And to power the beast I used a 2000mA momax charger. To my surprise halfway through the trip I noticed my battery level had halved. I remember seeing the charging icon on the battery so thought ok its charging it.
But when we arrived after a 45 mintue drive i lost over 50% battery It seemed it wasn't charging after all. The phone was extremely hot
Did it get too hot possibly while driving and stop the battery from charging as a thermal safe guard from overheating? I'm on the stock kernel. Anyone had this issues like this? And does anyone know the MA rating of the official DNA charger? I'm in New Zealand so i cant just pick up the official charger or anything like that.
If i cant use the GPS without the phone charging it will make it unuseable on long trips
Edit: Problem found, phones gets too hot on the dash and running GPS it will throttle and not allow the battery to charge. Thumbs down to HTC making a phone with GPS that can't be used for more than 20 minutes or your phone overheats.

the rating on the HTC charger is 1000mah.. one thing i have noticed that some higher MAH chargers will actually cause the phone to charge in "USB" mode.. when you plug that charger in check the battery settings screen and at the top it should say charging AC or USB.. if it says USB then that is likely your problem since USB charging mode is much slower than AC charging mode.

So the problem doesn't lie with the actual mA output of the charger, but with the way the charger is physically pinned out. On "fast" chargers, that is, chargers that can deliver more than 500mA of current, the center two data pins, D+ and D- are shorted. This short tells the phone that it's plugged into a dummy charger and allows it to draw more current (I believe the DNA can draw a max of 1 amp when in AC or fast charge mode). In a computer USB port, these two pins obviously aren't shorted as they are the data pins. Without the short being present, the phone assumes it is plugged into a computer where USB 2.0 specifications allow for a maximum of 500mA of current draw, so the phone software limits the charging rate to 500mA. The flaw in many aftermarket chargers, even the super high power ones, is they omit shorting the center two pins, resulting in the phone only allowing 500mA of current draw. This is a problem with both car chargers and some home chargers, especially the multi-port chargers designed for iPads and smartphones. Apple uses a different pinout for their high speed charging that isn't as simple as shorting the two data pins, so many Apple branded or "compatible" chargers don't put Android devices into fast charge mode.
For a car charger, my personal favorite is this Motorola one from Amazon. It provides up to 950mA of current, is genuine Motorola OEM so it's built well, and best of all is only $5 with free shipping if you have Amazon Prime. Yeah I use that charger too. Works well. I recently bought a dual USB output one that claims it puts out 1amp..but my phone shows USB mode. Is it only putting out 500 then?

Your phone is only drawing 500... I have a qmadix 2 amp micro usb with an extra usb port and it puts out plenty of power to charge 2 phones while using gps and listening to music.

Thanks for the info, still not luck for me. I brought a brand name 1 amp charger and used it again. It charges well to begin with. But after about 10 minutes the notification LED in the phone will start to flash .... Then it seems my DNA is not charging at all. Status bar tells me in the beginning it was not on USB charge. After the 10 minutes no charging detected at all. Its as if the droid disables charging.
I will check the cable too again and see if that was the issue. It might be the charger and or cable. But the first charger charged my Note II without any issues and fast. It never lost battery %
And again my DNA was scorching hot. Which seems to me more of an a throttling thermal issue. Its reaches xx temp and charging is disabled. Does the flashing led mean something? It was a sunny day and its summer here in New Zealand so the droid just got too hot maybe? Being black on the car dash in the sun cant help it.
I love this phone, and have my note II up for sale but if i cant fix this issue it seems GPS and Nav is a no go for me. Which is not good. I travel a lot.

in other words if you want to use this phone in summer on your dash as a GPS you might want to think about running the A/C on it at all times

This sounds right to me. My last 2 devices had the exact same issue when heating up. I do believe that fast charging really heats up the battery, so once it hits a threshold, it stops drawing power in order to cool off. Don't want a battery exploding in your phone.
The GPS radio can sometimes draw a bit of power, though it is much less on newer phones.
I digress, I really do think that in most cases, heat is the issue.
Its a very sad state of affairs, I cant use this phone as satnav / GPS without loosing a lot of battery life. Seems its only good for winter GPS when used on the dash in the sun of summer it will just over heat and not charge. Very poor if you ask me.

Try testing your phone at 'room temperature' (75 F, 30C), if your phone overheats using the GPS in this case, then you should return the phone because it is not normal.
If it is overheating on a hot dash board, ALL of my phones have done that. You can try blasting the wind shield vents to counteract the heat.
The DNA is normally great, but either your expectations are a tad unrealistic or your phone needs to be swapped.
A solution would be to mount it in a way that isn't in direct sunlight, like using one of those vent-mounted adapters. Then if it got hot, you could put the air on and it would cool it down.
Another option would be to either turn the brightness down, or to completely turn off the display, unless of course you have no idea where you are, and need more than just the audible directions.
But really, it sounds to me like your specific phone is just prone to overheating, and needs to go back. I haven't had any temperature-related functional issues at all.
Sure, it's gotten warm. But it's never failed me as a result of being too hot.

Well its summer here and its not taking the suns heat and being black doesn't help. I will see if I can move its position or place it over the A/c vent of the windscreen.
Wait till summer in the U.S and you will see more threads like these i think. I only comment its poor because no other phone of mine has done this in the past. Maybe mine is faulty.
Used mine for over three hours (one-way) using GPS/Maps full blown with no trouble or heat at all. I was also texting, surfing, playing games and talking on the phone at various times and had to plug in after awhile using the usual car charger. I don't like to get below 50% if I don't have to. Anyway, no trouble on the way there and no trouble on the way back.
HTC has always had the best gps radios I've ever used. My wife's GS3 still can't get as good, fast, and pinpoint lock as my DNA (or my Rezound for that matter).
As always, YMMV.
No offense man, but who the hell leaves their phone in the sun and expects it not to overheat? haven't you ever left your phone in the car in the summer and come back to a red triangle or a high temperature sign?
The key to keeping your electronics alive is to keep them cool. Your phone is just like your computer...you try to keep the temperatures as low as possible at all times.
I have a generic cigarette lighter adapter I got off ebay. I used my the google gps on my phone to a store in CT for the wife and then a trip to Boston, well over 3 hours worth of continued GPS use. When I unplugged the phone when we parked in the garage I had a full battery and the phone didn't appear to be any warmer than playing a regular game.

That's how every phone works. If you are using it in a hot environment and in direct sunlight it will try to cool itself down by stopping charging.

Sorry bud, you cannot expect to leave your phone on the dash in direct sun, while using GPS AND charging and not have less than optimum results. You are KILLING the efficiency of your battery by allowing it to overheat continuously. Keep it cool man!

I have a Qualcomm 3.0 car charger which was worked with my older phone Samsung S8Plus and charge without any problem
Now I have a S9+ and it's not charging . Notification said it's connected to quick charger,but it's not charging just keep same battery level all the time and I am driving 45-50 minutes every day
Any ideas what it could be? And how to fix that.
If I'm running Waze and have the screen at high brightness my Samsung fast charger has trouble keeping up too... It might charge a couple of percent per hour but that's it.
Dropping the screen brightness a bit allows it to charge a bit faster.

I use Waze and Internet Radio app in split screen, my brightness is like 55% not auto
Today I disable fast charge and no different so far.
These phones seem to have sensitive heat throttling, mine charges slow when running Waze and music at the same time. Try placing it in front of your AC vent and see if keeping it cool speeds up charging.

Well mine is right in front of the A/C grill

Not sure what would be causing it, but there should still be no problem with it keeping up. For reference, I run my 9+ at auto brightness in the car, running Torque Pro, Waze, and Pandora full time to work and back, 40+ minutes each way. I have a Verizon branded charger that I got with my V30 back in Nov, and it has no issue not only keeping up, but also charging it up. I easily get a minimum of 15% or more charging just in that time.
I order me another charger . Will come in couple days . Anker 24W ,3.0
