Mini USB the same on "all" HTC phones? - G1 Accessories

Since HTC Dream isn't for sale here, no accessories are marked to be Dream compatible. There's however lots of Touch (and other HTC models) accessories available. Is it safe to assume that anything that fits the Mini USB of a Touch also works with the Dream? More specifically, chargers (mains and car).
/Mats

I've used the same mini-USB cable to charge my PS3 controller, my G1, and other devices.

I've personally used, g1 charger, g1 usb cable, BB charger, BB usb cable, moto RAZR charger, standard mini usb.... all of the above are 5V usb spec... only diff for the wall chargers is the aperage...
If your referring to other attachments such as speaker dongles and the like I would venture to say so since the port on the g1 is titled extUSB same as many other HTC phones

Nice - Just what I wanted to hear. Now I can go buy that HTC Touch/TyTN/et al car charger I found at a local shop, and plug it in with confidence. Thanks to all who have responded.

I tried the USB to 3.5 mm adapter, with controls for a handsfree and music (call, end call, mute, hold, play, stop, volume...) that came with my HTC Tytn II, and the G1 didn't react to it...

I used the same MicroUSB to 3.5MM adapter that came with the G1 on my HTC Touch and it worked fine.. it didn't work on my BlackBerry 8830 however, but that one has a 2.5MM headphone out along with a USB out, which i can assume for file transfer.

How big of a difference does the amperage make in temrs of battery life ?
Ex 1 charger I have is 200mah the other 500mah.
Ill assume charging speeds will be different but will this cause any additional wear and tear on battery ?

I wish we had the same thing up in Canada, the Rogers Dream comes with its own proprietary USB dongle on the bottom. So when I lost my phone wall charger I am doomed to PC only charging.

It shouldn't. Anything with a LiIon battery needs a charge controller. The controller's sole job is to monitor the temperature and charge rate as the battery charges and keep it within a certain range. That's why "Battery Info" in spare parts shows the temperature.
It doesn't matter if you're charging from a USB A-to-miniB cable since the G1 will limit the power draw from the charger to 500mA unless the charger has some pins shorted in the USB connector.

Does anyone know if the MiniUSB port on the Dream supports a power OUT function? We are brainstorming ideas on getting flash (as in camera flash) onto the phone, and one idea is with an LED connected to the MiniUSB port

Nope, no power available there. Why not hack it into an extended battery cover? There's lots of room to work, and you could even tap into the battery directly. Just watch out for shorting the battery terminals unless you like your G1 extra crispy.

Bot Cigarette adapter charger w/MiniUSb tip,,but meant for Motorola?

I bought a cigarette car adapter 12v with MiniUSb plug at the end (says for Motorola V3), but thought I could use it on my Hermes. It seems to charge (maybe a little slower charging that the one I had been using, which got destroyed), and is of good quality compared to my cheap ebay one that I had. It has smart charge protection in it. Someone had told me that any cigarette car charger meant for blackberrys, Motorolas etc that had a MiniUSb plug at the end could be used for the Hermes. Are they wrong?, Should I be worried about it hurting my device? The one I bought is through Cellgear.com,,sorry, the specs on the charger don't appear on the site.
If it is charging a little more slowly, then you are probably ok. Really, if we were all going by the book, we would check the charge rates and voltage outputs against the specs laid out by HTC.
One problem you may face is the the refusing to charge unless the device is switched off syndrome. This can happen with chargers not designed for the Hermes due to differences (it is thought) in the earthing connections. So although it may deliver a charge on the appropriate pins it can sometimes not allow the charging circuit to kick in due to the earth connection difference.
Just something to be aware of if it happens.

v3 usb charger
sure it will charge your phone, in fact I've found any mini usb will do the job, HOW-EVER if the phone is soft reset then the charger is pluged in it will charge ok, BUT once you "use" the phone it tends to stop charging..thats cause the real chargers are wired a little different.
my other half has a V3, my BT gps uses mini usb as does my BT headset, so I just use whatever is around and put up with the problem.
hope this helps

I've been using the following devices to charge my 8525.
My HTC supplied 8525 Charger.
My Motorola V3 Razr Charger
My Motorola V3 Razr Car Charger
My Nextel Blackberry Charger
My Nextel Blackberry Car Charger
Mini USB to PC (linux, win2k, winxp, vista, etc..)
Mini USB to laptop
Mini USB to CABLE BOX (DVR and Non-DVR)
Mini USB to Nintendo Wii
Mini USB to Playstation 2
Mini USB to Playstation 3
Mini USB to HP C6100 Series printer
All of them charge the phone with no issues.
I've found that Blackberry chargers work a bit better than Motorola chargers. I think the Moto chargers provide less amperage than the Blackberry ones. This means it may charge, but more slowly. If your battery is completely dead, the Moto charger may not be able to allow you to boot the Hermes. I think the Blackberry charger will.
The other thing is that cheap chargers, especially car chargers are pretty...cheap. I finally bought a name-brand charger and it's a lot more stable and better built that the generics. If you're gentle with your stuff it may not be a problem, but things sometime get thrown around in my car.

I don't see how apple could have messed with the pin outs, because the USB A cable that plugs in your pc must have the +5 G Data + and Data - in a specific order for it to work on your pc.
and as far as i can see the 3 pin > usb adapter is just a step down transformer with a Female usb port on it so should work unless its not actually outputting +5v that may be a reason why it didn't work.
ive used a non apple ac to usb one no problems, and i agree with the above, theres no way they could have messed with the pinouts or it wouldnt be usb anymore... i see no reason why it shouldnt work, might have to take one outta the box and try (got a few here at radioshack)
I have tried it and it works...simple really
I use one every night, works for me for charging (but I hate the shiny white color, grawr!) ^_^
Yep, I've tested it and it works just fine.
OTOH, the cheap $4.95 car charger my wife bought online doesn't seem to be able to charge my G1, her Blackberry, or any other phone. The light comes on and the phone says "Charging" but the charge level never actually increases.

I got this for my old TyTn 2 and it works fine with the Dream and the car charger is HTC branded,
The cradle is a little loose for the dream but you use the dash of the car to kind of balance it in and its fine.

car charger problem

Hi
I have noticed that when using a car charger that worked on my older htc phone it heats up the jade and then it eventualy locks i have to hit the reset button or pull the battery.
has anyone else found this or know of a way round it, I like my old one as it has about a 2m cable whish reaches exactly where i need it to.
has anyone else seen a car charger like this that works with the jade?
cheers
Tom
I have a charger from an old O2 phone and it's working fine. I had no problems with car charger so far.
I looked on the mains charger i had with the device and it says output is 5V, I think the car charger is giving out 12V as I think it's just a straight through usb light socket so i wouldn't imagine it's stepping down that much, only problem is i don't like the chargers with curly cables i want a straight cable or a charger that just has a usb socket on it.
any idea where i could find that?
I have another option of adding another lighter socket on the dash of the car near where the phone is but i don't really like drilling holes in the car if i don't have to!
ok a quick google and i have found a 4 usb port 5v car charger so fingers crossed that will sort my problem out.
it's quite cool as it has surge and over load protection for each port so if one shorts out the others carry on working.
Hi,
I already bought 2 car charger kits but non of them fit, they all have a mini USB and not the special one the Jade needs.
Can anyone give me a LINK for a proper car charger, cause on eBay they sell all the mini USB crab which obviously doesn't work!
Thanks!

[Q] A Good Car Charger?

I don't find a car charger powerful enough to Charge my Phone.
What is the right choice??
Brodit active charger.
I use it while navigating with the screen on and overclocked and charges just fine.
There are plenty of cigarette lighter chargers which offer a USB port instead of a dedicated cable. Simply use your phone's USB cable with this charger. Mine cost like £3.50, and it works just fine on my Hero.
Been using a Technocel Platinum MV3CPCP that came with a Moto Razr v3 with my HTC Sensation and used it previously with a BB8900 with no issues. When in the car listening to the Music app and GPS nav runnin' it eventually drains the battery meaning that the fone is using more power than the charger is providing but it is a USB charger putting out nominal power so this must mean the the fone can use more power than is provided while charging by normal means, yes? ... anyone else with a similar experience?
TIA
Any cigarette lighter USB adapter will be fine to just stick your USB cable into.

HTC Bluetooth Music Adapter--charging issue

Hello,
I have purchased the HTC Bluetooth Music Adapter from Sprint (also known as the HTC Car StereoClip): http://shop.htcpedia.com/htc-car-stereoclip-audio-bridge-a100.html
I've been using it for about a week now, and the battery has completely depleted for the first time. I noticed that I am not able to charge it using a vehicle power charger . I used the included USB cable, and it charges just fine with several different wall chargers I have lying around. It charges fine from a PC or laptop USB port. But when I try to charge it from the vehicle power adapter, nothing happns.
I have an official HTC dual car charger: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OQUJRQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00. This charger is rated (like the standard HTC wall chargers) to put out a current of 1A per each outlet. So I don't understand why this Music Adapter will charge via a wall charger, but not a vehicle, and they have the same output, and are made by the same company. I double checked that the vehicle charger works with other devices. It will charge my HTC EVO 4G LTE, my Jawbone ICON bluetooth headset, as well as other friends' phones.
Does anyone else have problems getting their HTC Bluetooth StereoClip to charge? I know it's not the end of the world--I can always take it inside the house to charge it when it dies every few days, but it sure would be convenient to just have it charge in the car overnight without having to remember to tote it back and forth.
Please help!!
Thanks.
Um, I looked at the pictures of this device. When you are in your car, are you plugging your charger into the phones charging port? Not the port on the Bluetooth adapter. Your phone will never charge if you are plugged into the Bluetooth adapters port.
Are you trying to use it while it is being charged? I think i read before that the stereoclip uses the BT to stream the sound, and i've had a few bluetooth headsets that didn't work if it was being charged, and won't charge if you're actively using it (just tried out of curiosity). Only thing i can recommend is to try a single microusb cigarette charger, maybe its the way the charger is wired.
---------- Post added at 12:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:39 PM ----------
One question that is unrelated to this charging issue: in the bluetooth pairing settings for the stereoclip, does it do phone mode as well as media or just media? My car's headunit does phone and i'd like to see if i can just have each device handle a separate stream.
Hmm. Interesting. Mine charges fine using a rocketfish/best buy car adapter I have and a generic micro usb cable I got from Monoprice. Charging occurs on mine when it's off or on, streaming or not. The adapter and cable also work to charge my phone and jawbone too.
Maybe try change your usb cable or car adapter?

When in the car, my phone sits in the car dock...on the windshield, so yes it is plugged into one of the ports. And I plug another USB cable (from the 2nd port) into the BT Music Adapter. It won't charge. I have to take it inside and charge it from a wall charger.

Okay...I had a spare Rocketfish vehicle charger lying around, and I just went out to the car and tried it. It charges just fine fine!! However, an official HTC vehicle charger with an official HTC USB cable won't charge an official HTC accessory...WEIRD.
So problem "temporarily" solved: I have to have to keep TWO vehicle chargers in the car--the dual HTC for the car dock, and the rocketfish for the HTC bluetooth adapter. This really sucks, and defeats the purpose of me buying a dual adapter. Or, I could just bring the adapter in every 4 or 5 days and charge it inside. It gets about 5 hours of music streaming before it dies. Oh well...
The issue I have with mine is that if I plug it into my Bose soundlink aux port and connect to it, it actually sounds better then just connecting to the soundlink itself. Using the new Apt-x and all.
But I plug it into my car aux in and it doesn't sound any better then my universal one I'd been using on a2dp
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

The dual charger could be splitting the Amps, I've heard of 2A adapters pushing 2 to one port or 1 and 1 if 2 things are plugged in. Did you try charging the BT adapter without the phone plugged into the second port? The BT adapter probably requires a specific minimum amperage where as the phone will just go into USB charging instead of wall charging mode if under 1A.
I tried every possible combination. And I have verified that it puts out simulataneously 2A (1A + 1A). I connected my EVO 4G LTE, plus a friends original EVO 4G, and they both showed "AC Charghing," which means 1A. And of course, I tried charging the StereoClip with nothing else. I don't get it.

Weird is right. I have a dual output car charger in my other car & it works fine with that one too, with 2 devices plugged in. My dual is a generic one I got from Monoprice.
My only other suggestion would be to find a different dual head charger.

It will pair with anything. I use it with my Nexus 7 mainly.
And just as a precaution.. Don't leave this in your car if it is hot where you live.
I had mine in my car, for probably a month. Never used it other then when i first got it to verify it worked. Went to use it again, nada..
Wouldnt charge, wouldnt turn on, nothin. I'm assuming the 100+ degree heat for a month+ destroyed the battery. Sprint provides a 1 year warranty on their accessories, so i was able to swap it out no issue though.

Yes, it will pair with anything. My first HTC EVO 4G LTE (stupid) decided to break, so I was stuck with a Samsung Intercept as a loaner phone for awhile. It will pair with any bluetooth device, however...if that device doesn't support the new apt-X coding technology (like the EVO 4G LTE), the audio may not be as clear, and the connection will likely have intermittent skips (as with the Samsung Intercept).
