How to Activate the Built-in VOIP on your Atom Life - iPAQ rw6828, XDA Atom Software Upgrading

I have only condensed my findings from the below main thread and thought that as and Atom Life owner that I would share the easy was with my fellow Atom users. Works on WM6.xx and possibly WM5.0. All credits go to the original main thread writer and all the members that contributed to the (currently) 155 pages of that thread!

To make is as easy as possible here are the instructions and files that I used to activate the built-in VOIP that WM 6.xx has. For me it works great and Internet VOIP calls are crystal clear and best of all some are totally FREE or at least cheap (cheaper than SKYPE).
Here are the main files required and their original XDA locations:

OK did you know that Windows Mobile has VOIP functionality built-in? Well it does but it has not been initialised by either M$ or the phone manufacturers....wonder why! To use VOIP you first need to have a VOIP or SIP account, they are generally free to register but then require you to purchase credits with them to make calls to certain destinations, however some do offer FREE calls to land lines and mobiles, but you first need to buy minimum credit to give you the "FREE user days" to access those free country calls. There are many VOIP suppliers out there so I will let you choose the one that you like the best. However to start with try www.sipdiscount.com or www.smartvoip.com currently they are offering free calls to CHINA, USA, UK, Australia and many others. Registration is easy and straight foreward, paying for your first lot of credit is not so easy, unfortunately no Paypal or credit card accepted!
Once you have your account (lets assume you signed up with SipDisciount) then you will have a user name and password, also the settings required to get you going are the "SIP Server" address (sip1.sipdiscount.com).
1) Install the CAB file VM VI Black VOIP & Config.CAB
2) Soft reset your Atom Life.
3) Install MORT Script if you do not already have it on your AL.
4) Copy the "SIP Tool Director 0.5" MORT script to your memory card or device.
5) copy the 'ipdialplanNEW.xml.txt' file in to the /windows directory.
6) Locate the original file 'ipdialplan.xml' and using Total Commander or file explorer for SPB Pocket Plus users, select properties, remove the 'read only' attribute and then add the file extention '.txt'
7) Open the new dialplan file 'ipdialplan.xml (Working Example).txt' and select and copy all text.
8) Open the original ipdialplan file and select all text then paste in the new text (overwrite the old).
9) change the properties of the original file back to read only and remove the '.txt' extention.
On the Today screen you should now see a new line 'VOIPSERVICE: BLOCKED'.
10) tap on the normal signal strength meter at the top of the today program, this will open the 'phone' window, then tap 'settings'.
11) scroll along to the 'Internet tab' and select "Whenever available". select OK to exit.
12) Open your Wireless connection and connect to available wireless service.
13) hit the 'START' icon in the TODAY screen locate the 'SIP CONFIG TOOL' and open it. (or if you installed the SIP TOOL DIRECTOR, execute that file for UI).
14) Enter your SIP service provider details; Description, SIP Server, user name, Password. Then save configuration.
15) After a few seconds you should now see the name of the VOIP TODAY plug-in change to your SIP provider and then 'Available'.
16) Tapping on the SIP provider name will change it from 'Available' to 'Selected' and back again, this is actually toggeling between VOIP and regular service providers.
Note: even if you leave it as 'Available' you will still be able to receive VOIP calls from others. However you must have it as 'Selected' to be able to make VOIP calls otherwise your phone will use the standard service carrier.
17) Make the below registry changes:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Enter in the registry:
HKLM\Comm\RTC\Codec (create codec key if it doesn't exist)
UsePreferredCodec DWORD 1
PreferredAudioCodec DWORD 8
--------------------------------------------------------------
Check the following REG entry and enable if required:
HKLM\System\VoIP\SIP
EnablePort5060 = 1
--------------------------------------------------------------
You can check the service provider being used to dial out by opening the phone dial pad (pressing the dial key) and see if your normall cell operators name or your VOIP SIP provider in the top left corner of the phone screen.
You are done and can now make VOIP calls using WIFI connection, to use 3G or GPRS requires some further reg hacking and additional driver files. The method can be found on the top thread link.
ISSUES:
Battery usage is heavy on WIFI and using VOIP so be aware of this!
Sound comes from the loud speakers and not the ear speaker (same as with SKYPE) there is no known fix for this on the Atom Life...unless you know or find one! - EDIT: INSTALL AUDIOROUTE 1.2 AND ACTIVATE TO EARPIECE ONLY AFTER CONNECTING THE VOIP CALL.
I did also include the file "voipbuster Credit balance & smartdialing.cab" which works with SipDiscount or VoipBuster and maybe some others. It installs a Today screen line that tells you your calling credits with these companies and maybe any other SIP account that you open. Just ignore the "Smart dialling" feature and leave the phone number field blank in the set up page.
If you want to try to get 3G and GMS VOIP working use the 'SIP CONFIG Tool' and menu option, it allows gsm/3G Reg hack from its menu system:
NOTE: Do not try to install other VOIP files such as "WM6VoIPFull.cab" or "WM65VoIP.cab" I tried today and they don't work, just crash the Phone function of your Atom Life.

*G*P*R*S*

Hi guys,
new to the forum.
I got 2 BIG (sorry just a newbie..!) question...
i just got an o2 xda.
a) I managed to set up gprs connection to browse internet pages.
My question is... when I insert my sim in the xda, as soon as my provider (wind italy) is recognised a "G" symbol appears next to the radio signal...but after a few seconds it disappears..what does it mean? that the phone is not working under gprs? should i set up something more to allow the phone to work in gprs mode?
b) can i install any application made for pocket pc on the xda? or does a sort of "porting" exist to make them work on the xda?
Thanks in advance
Paolo
a) dont really understand what you mean
1 you ask about if calls are blocked while you are using GPRS
2 you ask if the G symbol mean that your gsm network dont support gprs
b) no, applications for pocketPC compiled for ARM works under all pda's which have pocketPC and an ARM cpu
I think he is asking why the "G", vanishes after initial connection, is that a sign that gprs is not active or is it normal even while gprs is active. Personally I cant get gprs to work with O2 and I have found no solution even though O2 tells me it is available to me.
that's it! I guess the "G" symbol means that gprs is active at the moment (even for calls). So if after a few seconds the "G" symbol is gone, i guess it means that i'm working under gsm and not gprs.
The question is..assuming that what i'm saying is true.. how is possible to make phone calls under "gprs"?
Thanks a lot for your answers.
Paolo
well because autoconf dident include my country or phone company i set up my gprs myself
i did this under
settings
connections
connections
internet settings - modify
new
put a name
select modem -> celluar line (gprs)
typed in the access point of my phonecompany's gprs in my case [Internet]
opened IE
it wanted user name password and domain
i dident type anything at all
but checked save settings
pressed ok and
it loaded the page and i could suft and use messenger and such
Question 1: When the G sign appears when you turn on your radio, it means that GPRS is available. After a few seconds, it always disappears: this does not mean anything. If you connect to GPRS, the G sign does not appear again. If you make a phone call (or receive a phone call) while connected via GPRS, the XDA disconnects automatically from GPRS.
Question 2: Programs for Pocket PC are all compatible with XDA. Just 2 things to remember:
a- some programs are written specifically for some Pocket PCs (like iPaq), so they might not run on XDA
b- some programs related to mobile phones (for managing SMS, fax, ...) are specifically written for PDAs connected to mobile phones (Nokia, ...) and thus not compatible with the Pocket PC Phone Edition
GPRS IE Errors
The logon and password box when you open IE either mean
1. your user name and password for the GPRS connection are incorrect for your provider and contract or
2. You have proxy settings enabled which you don't need
3. You don't have proxy settings and need them.
Hope this helps
Thanks to all,
i managed to understand...that the "G" symbol is disappearing from the main screen but if i "touch" the radio signal a bubble appears with the provider name (ie. WIND) and the "G" symbol on the right side of the bubble.
I guess that means i'm connected in gprs mode all the time. Thanks.
Paolo
GPRS
Hi Paolo.
The "G" symbol means that your XDA have the GPRS Service active by your cellphone provider.
If you have WM2003, to configure the GPRS funcionality you need to go:
- System Panel - Connections and click in "Connections icon".
- "Add a new Modem connection"
- "Enter a name for the connection and select the option Celular Line (GPRS).... Click Next
- Enter the name for the Access Point (of you provider)... Click Next
- Enter the Username and password, if you need it... Click Advanced
- Enter the DNS Servers manualy, if you need it. Click OK and Finish...
And you have GPRS.
Greetings...
Sorry my english, but it is the best i can.
If somebody has foolproof step by step settings for GPRS over O2 using payg sim, I would be very grateful, I have followed instructions from elsewhere but no joy.

No, you;re only part way there. The presence of the G means that GPRS is available, but does not mean you're connected.

Planet 3 on Hermes

Hi, have tried searching fond something for Three in Austria but im in UK? ANyone know how?

Planet 3 Settings
There have been a lot of posts in the aussie forums on this one, and the initial view I got was that you needed 3 separate settings on the 3 network: 1) for the Planet 3 (Intranet), 2) for the Internet, and 3) for MMS.
It turns out that they have done away with the Intranet/Internet distinction so all you need to create is one settings definition called (in my case) "Planet 3 Settings". Create one modem entry under this definition for "Planet 3" and set the Access Point Name for this entry to '3services'. Fill in your username (email address) and password (PIN number assigned to your account) and leave all other fields blank. Oh, I forgot, set the "Select a Modem" box to 'Cellular Line (GPRS,3G)'. You then select "Planet 3 Settings" as the default for "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet" .
I still keep a separate settings definition called "3MMS" and have this selected in my MMS setup, even though it has exactly the same settings as "Planet 3 Settings". One of these days I will swap them over.
BTW, When I access Planet 3 web content, I get average to crappy video - tends to pixelate a lot. Not sure if this is down to connection speed or an old version of Streaming Media Player, but I have had to stick with this version since the newer ones don't seem to work on my re-flashed JasJam (LVSW's WM6).
Cheers
thanks for the reply,i have input the connection settings, where do i go now to view my3 etc? do i use Internet explorer?
cheers
My3 on Planet3
You access Planet3 Home from here: http://three.net.au/grd/gethome.do, then select the My3 Icon from that page. That will automatically take you to the My3 homepage and log you in.
Alternatively, here is the My3 URL: http://three.net.au/alm/gethome.do.
Your choice how you bookmark these.
Cheers
My3 on Planet3....Again
Re: my last post.
The URLs i supplied must of course be accessed from Pocket IE.
Cheers
for myself, on Three Australia, for the connection settings I call it what I want (Planet 3), and the access point name name is '3services' I then do not enter any other settings in - the username and password are left blank. this works fine on my 838pro and has done on all my previous phones

GPRS MMS SETTING For CHINA MOBILE

Hi
I am in China but I AM NOT chinese. I have been looking for the way to set GPRS and MMS for This phone forever and couldn't find. I notice we have a chinese friend in this forum. anyone could help me?
There indeed is a small app designed especially for this purpose.
Just unpack the files into any folder on your device. Click on DataConnection.exe to open the app, select "remove all" to delete all existing connection configurations, then choose the second item named as "中国移动WAP包月". after all is done, click on cancel to quit. Now ur device is capable of surfing the net and sending/receiving MMS.
Also be sure you have a data connection package, by default the data connection for web browsering via China Mobile is charged at RMB ¥0.03/kb.

Hi,
Also living in China, not Chinese. All you have to do for the China mobile GPRS is change the setting to the following and it works just fine:
1. Go to start>settings>connections>add new connection
2. Call it cmwap, set it as a gprs connection, tap next
3. access point name is CMNET
4. username and password are BOTH "CMNET" all caps
5. leave domain blank
6. tap finish
enjoy
As posted above, do make sure you get a dataplan. They have one for 25RMb a month that includes 200MB of GPRS and 300 text messages.
Thanks you very much both of you very appreciated

I've been using a Cingular 8125 with WM5 in Ningbo then Shanghai for the past 8 months. The wireless internet has never worked perfectly since I moved to Shanghai, but when I returned last week with my TyTN 2 (Tilt) it never works. I used the same standard setup CMNET, not username or password etc. No error messages, just it never connects. Maybe the TyTN2 actually does have specific settings.
首先我们进入数据连接菜单里:开始—设置—数据连接原来装有前他的连接都删掉还有拨号连接和VPN连接里都是空的有的话也统统删掉跟着按:GPRS连接 进入再按菜单—添加

mlalahoi,
Thanks for the information!
I'm on CM with the 神州行service.
I applied for the RMB20 package & suddenly, my GPRS settings refused to allow me to connect to the internet.
I made changes to the settings & now I'm good to go.
For the record, these are my settings:
Connects to: Internet
AP: CMNET
Username: CMNET
Password: CMNET
IP Address: 10.0.0.172:9201
I need to input the IP address or else I can't find the website I'm browsing to.
Under Connections | Menu | Advanced | Menu | Options, I configured My Desktop connects to: The Internet.
In Connections | Menu | Advanced, I set my Internet Connection to the entry I created for the GPRS connection above & set the others (Work, WAP & Secure WAP) to Automatic.
Finally, in PIE, I set my connections to Internet & uncheck the Automatically detect settings checkbox.
I'm good to go now.
BTW, what type of service are you on? My RMB20 package comes with only 50Mb of data?!
TIA!

MMS and GPRS setting for the Samsung i900
Hello every one does any one know how to apply the setting for gprs and mms for the i900 samsung
I finally resolved this after a long time. First you have to set up the connection to go to "cmwap", not "cmnet" and configure the proxy settings using one of the methods above. Then you need to configure the MMS mailbox. Open Messaging and choose Tools->Options from the menu. On the list of mailboxes, click on MMS. This opens the configuration. Click the Servers tab and then the New button. Server name is whatever you want, Gateway is 10.0.0.172 (same as proxy), port is 9201 (WAP), Server Address is http://mmmc.monternet.com. The "Connect via" should be the one you already created, then change the WAP version to 1.2. Save this and then on the next screen click on the new name and click on the "Set as Default" button.
Things should now work fine.

Can the Chinese version of the Mate 20 series be used overseas?

The Mate 20 series is one of the hottest phones on the market right now, and as a longtime Huawei fan, I really have to say how impressed I've been by this series: it looks great, it's got a very strong NPU, a super-cool three lens camera system. I love the Mate 20 series and picked a Chinese version up as soon as I could. As somebody who regularly travels internationally, I also pay close attention to the differences between the domestic and overseas versions of devices like this. So I'm sure that a lot of other people are wondering the same thing: if I try to use my Chinese Mate 20 series while overseas, will I run into any problems? If something happens, what should I do? To answer these questions, I checked out some materials on Huawei's official website, spoke to their customer service, and conducted my own little experiments, and I'd like to share what I found with all of you.
First off, the Chinese and overseas versions of the Mate 20 series are actually different model numbers: the overseas versions include the L29, the L09, and the L0C, while the Chinese versions include the AL and the TL. These differences in model numbers reflect different specifications. For example, there is a 4 GB+128 GB (RAM+ROM) model, a 6 GB+64 GB model, and a 6 GB+128 GB model. The Chinese and overseas versions also support different network frequencies. For example, the overseas version supports the B28 frequency band, while the Chinese version does not.
Further, the models for some overseas countries and regions have had to be intensely customized in partnership with local network providers in order to provide full compatibility.
Thus, the unmodified Chinese version may experience compatibility issues in some of these overseas countries and regions. Therefore, if you wish to use your phone as you travel overseas, it is recommended that you purchase the overseas version of the Mate 20 for optimum user experience and more rapid maintenance and other services.
If you have already purchased the Chinese version of the Mate 20 and regularly travel abroad, you may wonder what kind of problems you can expect and how to resolve them. Based on my own experiences, I've found a few possible problems that you might encounter, and through consultation with Huawei's customer service and my own experimentation, I've discovered some possible solutions for each. Although you may not encounter all or any of these, it's always best to be prepared, and I hope this information is helpful to you.
Problem 1:When using a SIM card such as the kind used by Germany's Virtual National Roaming system (this card with two numbers assigned to it, which allows you to freely roam between two countries and their respective mobile networks), you can't access the 4G network while roaming, and can't even call the emergency numbers.
Solution:Try the following:APN: Go to Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile network > Access Point Names and choose to create the correct APN appropriate to your network provider.
Problem 2 :I encountered an error with the number of my voice mailbox, and it won't work.
Solution:Try the following:Go to Dialer > ︙ (menu in the upper right corner) > Settings > More > Voicemail and reset your voice mailbox number (to find your correct voice mailbox number, please check with your network provider).
Problem 3:The method of fee/deduction on my phone is different from what it's supposed to be.
Solution:This is commonly caused by errors in setting up the phone's pre-pay/post-pay system. Go to Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile network > Access Point Names and choose to reactivate the correct APN for your network provider.
Problem 4 :I can't send text SMS messages.
Solution:Go to Messaging > ︙ (menu in the upper right corner) > Settings > Advanced > SMS center number, and enter the correct SMS center number for your network provider. (The SMS Center is only available when a SIM card is inserted in slot 1, and the correct SMS center number should be that which corresponds to your network provider)
Problem 5 :The overseas version closes my apps while they're running in the background or when the screen is locked.
Solution:Go to Phone Manager > App launch, then set your apps to manual management and enable them to run in the background.
Problem 6 :I don't know how to disable the Record call function.
Solution:The Record call function is able to record your calls with other parties, and this must be done in accordance with local laws and regulations. If you have enabled the Auto-record calls function, and wish to disable it, go to Dialer > ︙ (menu in the upper right corner) > Settings > Auto-record calls and choose to disable Auto-record calls. Even while the Auto-record calls function is disabled, you can still manually switch Record call back on for individual calls.
Problem 7 :I don't know how to disable the Call Translation function.
Solution:As part of my research, I learned that the Chinese version of the Huawei Mate 20 Porsche Design has the Call Translation function that supports ten different languages. You can choose the languages involved in the translation on the Call settings screen, and touch the icon of Call Translation in the upper right corner of the screen to enable it. After the Call Translation function has been enabled, your call recording with other parties and both the text and audio record of the translation will be deleted from your phone after the call. (P.S.: This is really useful when traveling abroad; I really wish I had gotten the Porsche Design.)
Problem 8 :Emergency numbers are shown in the call log, and are not automatically hidden or deleted.
Solution:If needed, I recommend manually deleting each emergency call from the call log after the call is complete.
Problem 9 :I can't use Google apps (for example, opening the Google Play store shows an error code; Google Maps can't find my location; Google apps close on startup, etc.)
Solution:Being unable to use Google apps while overseas can be very annoying. Based on my experience, I recommend checking the following solutions, one at a time, in the following order:
1. Check whether your phone has been pre-installed with Google Play services. Go to Settings > Apps > Apps and check whether Google Play services is in the list. (I checked Mate 20, P20, and Honor 10 devices; a lot of the higher-end Huawei models had the service package pre-installed). If Google Play services has not been pre-installed, you will be unable to use Google apps on your device while abroad. You will only be able to open their webpage versions in your browser.
2. Check whether you access the Internet through a Chinese SIM card and roaming data plan. While roaming, your mobile data is actually still being processed through the Chinese network, so you will still be unable to access Google servers, same as if you were in China. Therefore, I recommend you pick up Huawei SkyTone data plan before going abroad, which will let you use your roaming service worldwide and is extremely convenient.
3. Check whether your app management is set to manual. Go to Phone Manager > App launch, and set Google Play services to manual management.
4. You may be experiencing compatibility issues with your version of Google Play services. Go to Settings > Apps > Apps > Google Play services, and perform the following:
a. Touch DISABLE, if it is available. Alternatively, touch the three-dot menu in the upper right corner and then touch Uninstall updates.
b. Go to Storage > MANAGE SPACE, and touch CLEAR ALL DATA.
5. Uninstall and then reinstall the Google Play app, Google Maps, or other Google apps.
