[SOLVED]Unlocked Hero OTA Updates - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yes i know the phone is new and probably will receive updates atm but i just had a few questions.
I live in the US and currently have Tmobile USA. I'm planing to buy an unlocked phone (most likely in the US if i can) and run it on tmobile. Yes i know no 3g, wifi will do.
Question
1) How will updates work if i don't have the provider specified for the phone or a phone with no required provider?
(this should be the same as someone who has an unlocked HTC Dream phone with no other branding. Did you get updates? and if you did how?)
2) Since this phone will be HTC branded will I be able to obtain software updates such as Donut, Eclair, and Flan? (I don't mind manual updates )

you ll be able to get updates ota.. as long as your price plan has internet tariff or you have wifi spots ....doesnt matter your not with the intended provider. alternativley when these clever bots on xda dev find root...most probably be able to manually update.

thats what i was thinking, i will be using wifi.
I was kinda not exactly sure because i read that for the g1's the reason why people got updates at different times was because tmobile sends the updates in many different groups

well had the g1 but i got the update as soon as it came out and im using it orange. never put a tmobile sim in it. that was ota as well on a 3g connection...good luck anyways.

cool thanks for the info!

I hope this is correct, cos as far as i understood it, only the google branded handsets got updated OTA.
I know HTC have RUU programs for updating from PC's and that this was there preferred method that they wanted to use....

well as i always say always trust a senior....i imgained it was the same for hero(ota updates ..) if it is then there should be no problem, if what you say is correct than i have no idea whatsover but still recommend getting a hero, cos they are the nuts! hope this helps and cheers for the post r hedghog and for clearing things up

No probs. From what i hear, Samsung are going down the sideloading route for the Galaxy as well, instead of OTA.
I could of course be wrong, but that is what i heard.
I hope i'm wrong cos OTA is so much easier!!

Hero arriving tomorrow! Do i need to input settings?

Hi,
I have purchased a 1 week old Hero (well a T-Mobile G2 Touch) that I will be unlocking. I also want to upgrade the firmware to the most upto date version. I feel more comfortable with upgrading it to the latest t-mobile version of the rom and seeing what its like, i'm sure i'll get bored and try out a custom rom later but for now i want to play with it with the official rom. Several people have told me that I need to unlock the phone and that it doesnt matter whether i do this before or after I upgrade the rom.
But the question is, I will be using this with my 3 sim in the UK, will the phone know my settings or will i need to input these manually, things like internet settings?
Many thanks

Make sure the device can use a usim card if you want to use it with 3
i hadnt even considered if it would take a usim - surely it does because the hardware is identical to a hero, also i'm sure i've read other people using a t mobile g2 on 3

[Q] Help with activation issue

Hello,
I am currently in the middle of no where New Mexico where all the towers are Alltell (sorry if the spelling was incorrect). This is not so much an issue of reception, but an issue of I am apparently unable to activate my phone over these towers.
I upgraded my phone to the newest Eclipse but was never able to activate due to the Alltell issue and was forced to flash back to stock froyo. I sent my phone to verizon (took a week) so they could reactivate it and upgrade it properly to gingerbread and all.
Here is the issue, they returned it reactivated but still on froyo...if I connect to wifi and allow the OTA update will I need to reactivate again? Because I can not and I would be without a phone again for week.
Thank you for any help or suggestions.

If u take an OTA it just upgrades ur system and android version.
U should not have to reactivate again.
U would only have to reactivate if u sbf/data wipe afterwards.
I have taken OTA many times after sbf to froyo and never had to reactivate once I was already activated.
U will most likely have to take two OTAs to get to 2.3.4. If u are on 2.2.2.
the first one will take u to 2.3.3 then reboot (I do it a couple times to make sure system is settled in) then take the next OTA to 2.3.4
There should be no need to reactivate after OTAs.
I am 99.999% certain of this as I have never had to.
I am sure someone else will confirm this for me.
waynewarrior78
What's Verizon say the reason they didn't put Gingerbread 2.3.4
on your phone? Why they put 6 month old OS on phone I have no
idea.
Anyway I've had 2 OTA update's and have not had to reactivate again.

I dunno
Do to my work, I am unable to leave NM for a while, so I sent the phone to my parents, so that they could bring it to a verizon store.
They told me the associate activated and upgraded it, but obviously the associate lied to my parents who are not tech savy. I absolutely can not stand the morons working in those stores.
Anyways, I really appreciate all the help. Thank you all!
Ed
So I am assuming u went ahead and took the OTAs and they went fine without having to reactivate?
nope
Actually since I am roaming, I need to leave wifi on to update, however, it is not giving me the option to update nor is it prompting me to update...

You mean that when you are connected to wifi and you go to settings>about phone>system update
it doesn't give you an update? That doesn't sound right at all....if u are on wifi it shouldn't matter at all if ur roaming(I would think)....
Hy Ed,
I had a problem getting the last update also just
got it on 11-13-11.What exactly is it saying when you try to
update going to (settings/about phone/system update).
Let us know ok

Check and make sure u don't have "social applications sync wifi only"
apparently that caused problems for someone...was that u img?
ashclepdia
Hy buddy, your right about that. I Don't believe that would
effect Ed if like he said he's on wifi. If that setting is checked it
should work but I never tried to update over wifi
wifi update
The "system updates" option under "about phone" is simply greyed out, thus I cant force it to check for an update. This is due to the phone roaming on Alltell. I have no idea how I can get it to look while on wifi. I have access to slow wifi out here and I left it connected all day, but I have yet to receive a prompt to update and it is still running 2.2.2.
Ed
Ed,
I just though of something Verizon ownes Alltel I'am not
sure if you new that.
{In early 2009, Verizon Wireless acquired Alltel, although the Alltel brand will remain until it is gradually phased out through the middle of 2009. Alltel was a large regional CDMA carrier offering service in 33 states, primarily in the south, midwest, and west. In 2005, the company acquired Western Wireless, a smaller carrier that operated under the Cellular One brand with service in 19 western states.}
So I don't know if that's the case is Verizon trying to tell you it's Alltel responsibility. There is no Alltel .
Something is not right system updates is greyed out. I mean I could put phone in airplane mode & it's not grayed out. You are able to make calls and use internet I assume. Are the call connection's good, internet speed ok ?
The setting that ashclepdia and I were talking about go to (settings/Battery & Data manager/Data Delivery/Social applications & make sure Sync over Wi-Fi only is unchecked.
Hope this Helps
If this was helpful, be sure to press the thanks button!
maybe change settings for data roaming to home only and see if u can get it to take update over wifi?
just doesn't seen right thagit wont even let u look for an update..
has to be SOMETHING u can do to get it.

The reason you don't get the option to check for system updates is because you haven't registered/agreed to the moto terms during the activation. I can suggest some things for you to try but I don't want to chance it if your stuck in NM for a while. If some settings are changed/reset you might loose data connectivity until you go back into a vzw area.
Why does it have to be OTA? Why not just grab one from here?

[Q] Help Needed

Hi All,
I am a newbie here and I am not sure if my question makes any sense. Couple weeks back, I bought an Atrix 4g (US version), an unlocked version (the seller told me that this phone is unlocked using AT&T code) and I am using it with Vodafone (India) sim. It works perfectly and so far I didnt face any problems with this phone. But last week, I got an alert in my phone saying that software update (2.3.4.5.141) is available for AT&T users and enable wifi to download. However, I didnt download and install the update as I was not sure why is it saying the update is available only for AT&T users. Also wherever I read about this software udpate, the name 'AT&T users' comes along with that.
So my doubt here is, what will happen if I, who is not an AT&T user, download and install the software update in my phone ? will it cause any issues in the phone (like getting locked again or bricking the phone)
I have not done any modification like rooting or installing custom ROM and things like that and I am using the phone as I recieved it.
Thanks in advance for your help.
-Qaddaffi
I would personally NOT update the phone since the update would probably relock the phone for the ATT carrier. The update is great I heard.
By the way, when you boot up the phone, does the phone say unlocked in the top left corner of the screen on the Motorola dual core screen?

I've even heard people saying that updating using AT&T, from any rom with an unlocked bootloader, can cause bricks. I wouldn't update under any circumstances.
I hear people are having problems with the 2.3.6 AT&T update anyways, like APN/mobile network issues.

The phone the op means is unlocked by carrier not bootloader.

I believe that the update does not block your phone. The chip lock, as far as I know, is independent of the device firmware update. In your case, I would upgrade.

Oh, my bad. I think I realized that later. Sorry.
If the guy/girl you got the phone from stated they used an "AT&T" code, it might have been unlocked the official way, through AT&T, meaning you wouldn't have any problems updating. Just note that if you update, you may have problems like other people are having. I'm not sure if AT&T's fixed it, or if the problems were from the official update even. It may have been a beta build. I don't know.
I'd say go for it. Just note that rooting might be a problem after you update, if you decide to root it later. I'm not sure if we have a method of rooting for it yet. (I can't look it up right now, sorry)

Rezound south korea

So I am leaving Montana for south Korea soon and was pretty excited to learn that my Rezound is global capable. The only thing is I am unsure if it will work on a Korean SIM card, or how to do so. I am s-off running the first leaked ics ruu. Do I need to ruu to the global firmware? Or will any gsm capable roms work without a firmware update? Also, if there's any one out there who has been to south Korea and could give me some tips on providers to choose from it would be appreciated.
Sent from my ... Rezound
You need to install the official Global RUU, leaks can be problematic because they prevent you from getting OTAs on stock rom and may not be the latest, most stable software.
I think there have been like 2 official firmware upgrades and several leaks between what you are running and global.
You do need a GSM enabled ROM, and one that is based on the global firmware. Simplicity or Newts One XXX 5.08 may be good options for you if u want to stick with a Sense ROM.
You may still need to call Verizon re: international calling, although I wouldn't mention I was rooted.

Thanks for helping. I was a little unclear in my original post however; I actually am running Newts One XXX 5.1.0 currently (awesome by the way). What I am wondering though is this; will the fact that I am not on the global firmware mean that I will need to RUU update in order to get service with a South Korean provider. I do not plan on trying to remain with Verizon as I will be in South Korea for more than a year.

rezound in rok
I'm also heading to the rok and hoping to use my rezound. I'm on stock ics ota. I'm going to see what I get on a stock rom before I do any unofficial releases, but I expect to drop SMS capabilities or maybe data like you see in the states with a T-Mobile sim in. I arrive in Korea on the 31st so I'll update sometime late next week and let you know. I've been to Korea before and I believe we will have to go with SK Telecom as our carrier because it is the only GSM network. The other networks are cdma to the best of my knowledge. Hopefully my next update will be from my phone on a Korean network!
Rezound in South Korea update
In Korea now. I just flashed my phone from a stock OTA ICS, unrooted, s-on over to the Global RUU found on Androidpolice.
I have tried to buy just a sim card from several stores, SK, KT Olleh etc, and the stores all say that I have to go to the headquarters stores located in Seoul, Yongsan Train Station on the top floor. Apparently this is the ONLY way to get a sim for a global phone, other than having a korean national get one for you and give it to you. This weekend I will be going to the headquarters stores and getting a sim, Other problems you may run into are related to being a foreigner in Korea. They will sometimes not want to sell you a phone on a contract because you as a foreigner could disappear at any time without paying the bill. So, they will try to get you to buy prepaid. I don't want to deal with prepaid anything, but that may be a viable option to get a SIM card easily. Just buy a reallllly cheap prepaid phone that has a sim in it, pull the sim and throw it in your global enabled device. Unless you speak Korean, navigating to the headquarters and getting what you want may prove a bit difficult. Fortunately, I do speak Korean, so I will let you know how it goes.
I will update again once I actually have a Sim in my phone!
Thanks for the valuable information so far. I will be arriving there at the end of November and am looking forward to hearing more about how It's going for you there.

got a sim, no data!
Finally got a sim from KT Olleh today. The girl at the counter didn't believe me that the phone would work, but I got her to do it anyway. By the way, don't try to set up service for a phone anywhere in Korea on a weekend. They cannot activate a new phone unless its a weekday. So anyway, got it all setup and the girl sits there and plays with my phone for a while without saying anything to me. Then she tells me that the calling and texting is fine but the phone won't get a data signal. I asked her to set the APN, and she said she did. I checked it out and she had put in the KT APN as alwayson.ktfwing.com Looks right to me, and she seemed to know what she was doing for the most part. Then she started to go on about how Korea runs on CDMA for the most part and not GSM yadda yadda.
So, I have a Rezound, working for incoming and outgoing calls and text on KT Olleh, but no data signal at all. I might repost a similar message in another forum topic to see if any gurus have any advice on how to get it working. Also going to do some more research. I'm new to this but there is tons of information out there. I will post again once I have resolution or give up and buy a new phone!
PS Phones in korea can be REALLY expensive. Dropped 850 on my wifes LG phablet (optimus VU2)!!! Equivalent to the instinct in the states I think?
didn't flash twice
So, I am a phone noob, and did a lot of reading last night. Saw that most people flash rezounds twice anytime putting on new firmware etc. I think I will try that tonight and see if I pick up the data signal.
The ruu's generally need to be flashed twice. However I did not need to do so going to the global, the ruu automatically took care of everything.

Some helpful information that KT Olleh has to say about using a non-korean phone in Korea.
http://expatblog.kt.com/71
The rezound may not have the radio frequency that network uses. That would be the main problem as to why you aren't picking up data.

I am currently in Seoul and have rented an Evergreen Mobile Sim Card that works on KT Olleh's network. I am curious as to whether you were ever able to get your Rezound to work with their Data network, and if so, how? Mine works with Olleh Wifi for free but will not even recognize the 3G, despite my having changed the APN settings, and even going to the Evergreen Mobile office in Yeoksa-dong today (they said they couldn't get it to work after an hour of fiddling with it themselves).
Suggestions? Do I have to root?
Oh, and the link in your above post has expired. Could you summarize what KT said?
Thanks!

Can't update... stuck on 4.4.2

Hi everyone! I got this Unlocked ATT One M8 from someone, and i have a very old software on it, it's like the first one, and when i hit the update buton it tells me that the software is up to date. I am on other carrier than att. Does this matter? Can I update manually? Any help appreciated!
Not sure what the fix is but I had the same issue with mine. No matter what I did (changing date/time/timezone) nothing would make it work and it seemed like it would never check for updates just tell me that I am up to date right away. I ended up using the RUU that was posted in the general section and reinstalling everything.
For me it checks for updates, but after some seconds it tells me I am up to date

It certainly does matter (carrier). AT&T is unique in this regard, in that you need to be connected to AT&T's network to get updates on their devices. One of the many reasons I recommend against getting AT&T devices (or for that matter, most US variants) if you aren't in the US.
RUU, as previously mentioned, if your best bet to update.
