What is a hard reset? - S740, S743 General

The GPS on my Rose has never worked and now I have some other strange issues with the phone (cant read or write sms, some pages wont load in explorer etc) - so I thought I'd try a hard reset. Before I do that, however, I would like to know what that implies exactly. Will the phone go back to factory settings? Will all my messages, files and documents be deleted? If so, what is the simplest way to back up, so that I can just restore everything after the hard reset?
Can I take out the memory card before a hard reset and then put it back after, so that I can keep everything that is on there?
Thanks a lot!

Hard reset will return your phone to a factory state, i.e. the state when you first got your phone - your messages, files, settings, contacts..etc WILL BE GONE.
You can leave your memory card in the phone, it wouldn't be affected by the hard reset.
There is no direct way of restoring everything.
However you can use this application: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705, to back up your messages, contacts, etc. You can even store the backup file on the memory card.

Ok, great, I already have that program. I'm gonna give the hard reset a shot, even though I have warranty left and could as well turn it back to the store I suppose (maybe even get a new one?).
Thank you!

If you were to take it to the store, the first thing they would do is a hard reset anyway. Better to save yourself some time doing it yourself. If you still have problems then take it back.

Data lost because battery went flat ?!!!

I left my XDA on my bed side table for about a week as I'd forgotten my charger. As expected it lost all power - what I did NOT expect is that when I did eventually plug it in to charge EVERYTHING had gone. All contacts, messages, installed software.
In fact it was as if it was brand new - asking me to realign my touch screen and do that stupid Cut/paste tutorial.
Sounds like a hard reset was done....but because it ran out of power?!
Any comments appreciated.
Dan
...it'll happen, one thing you should always do is keep a backup by using wither the built-in backup utility or purchasing Sprite Pocket Backup so that you can quickly recover from a hard reset.
Sprite Pocket Backup is my number one backup application for its simple ability to back up your entire device's data and applications into a .exe file which you can use after a hard reset - it doesn't even require a reinstallation of Pocket Backup! Just imagine how handy it is when you're on the road away from the PC you sync to - invaluable!
If you go to settings....system........permanent save...you will see the option to save all contacts and also connection settings in nvram, then if it happens again you can get them back.

hard resetting

Okay, so now I've played around with my XDA for quite some time, tried a lot of software and collected quite some data.
All this playing and trying led to lots of scrap files and remainders of different soft on my device, and I feel it gets a bit clogged and unstable now (after a year or so). As I have lost the orientation on what files belong to what software I feel it's time for a hard reset and clean reinstall of the software I found useful.
I was careful and most of my data is on SD anyway.
I also saved the my connection and contacts to flash memory.
I got all my third party software on a CD I can use to reinstall from my PC.
Then I ran the SD backup app that comes with the XDA.
It claims it stores all files of the file system on the SD card, and on request restores them all to thier original position, which in fact is not what I want: That'd only bring me back to a point I was at before. I only want to restore the files I really need.
I want to clear the whole device, but do not want to loose my contacts, my inbox and my connection settings. The manual (I only got the german translated manual, which is a poor job in some places) does not exactly say what data will be erased on a hard reset, and which will be unaffected, so I'm a bit scared to do the step right now.
Are there any specific files I could/should keep a copy of before hard resetting the device?
Thanks for your assistance,
Martin
If you have selected "pemanent save", for your contacts etc, they will not be lost by a hard reset, you can also backup connection settings to flash. I think you will need to backup your emails/messages using sync or another method.
guess what happened.
I selected permanent save, but after hard resetting there was nothing restored. That's quite bad because syncing was one of the features that became unstable the last days (always failed after half done) so I could not save my contacts this way. They were about 300. ;-(
Just now I try what comes back fro SD backup.
Martin
make sure you have the latest activesync 3.71
... at least now active sync is working again, so I got at least most of my contacts back onto the device, only the recently added/changed were lost.
The permanent save option has a bad HMI-bug: You are allowed go to the PIM tag, select what you want to do, then go to the connection tag and start the whole thing by hitting the save button, but then your contacts will not be stored, even if you believe they will because a pop up makes you think everything's allright: Instead you'll have to quit permanent save by tapping OK after you checked the boxes on the PIM tag, then open permanent save again and go to the connection tag to save the settings.
I should have known: It's Microsoft, and they love such HMI oddities...
Why can't we have MacOS on the XDA ... [sigh...]
Martin
Have you clicked on permanent save again after doing the hard reset, I had to do that as my contacts didnt come back until I did.
No, I didn't dare to: I thought maybe the second time the empty contacts or something else would get written to flash memory overwriting what ever might still be there ...
Martin
i think u have to click permanant save/ RESTORE after the hard reset!
becarful not to save after hard reset, that will save blank entries ontop of the old entries!
Hi, sorry for budging in.
Whenever I want to do a hard reset, I always save it in SD card. After
that I removed my Sd card before I do the hard reset. Once its is done,
I just have to set the GMT time and restore from SD card and thats all
I have to do. Everything including contacts, connections are in order.
By the way I do the hard reset once month so that I can have a stable
qtek.

Hmmm. yes, of cause I tapped permanent save/Restore after the hard reset. (With no result) What is going to happen if I do it time and again?
I'm afraid the german translation of the text in the screen is misleading. In "Permanent Save" there is one "PIM" page that has two checkboxes (one for Contacts, one for Calendar) and the text says "check the boxes and 1. contacts will be stored to flash and 2. calendar will be stored to flash". Nothing else.
Then there is a "Connections" tag that brings up a page that has two buttons (Save to flash and restore from flash) and a text that says "tap save to save connections and restore to restore connections" in short.
So I understood page 1 is for contacts and calendar data to be saved when boxes are checked and I tap OK, while page 2 is for the connection settings to be saved. Is that true?
Or is it true that I'll have to check the boxes on page one, then go to the second page and choose whether I want to save or restore them? (But why is the second page titled "Connections" then?)
This does neither come clear from the text on screen nor from the manual which basically tells me the same with the same words. The translation is awful. (Hope my english is better than MS's german ... )

How often do you guys in general perform a hard reset*?
I did my first one after a year of permanent uninterrupted use, but reading this forum I get suspicion that others do it on a regular base?
So what's this forum's users experience and recommendation?
Martin
* Except from now beeing able to delete a formerly undeleteable file, I do not see any effects on stability the hard reset had.

copied files to sd card and phone apps are hanging

Hi folks,
has any of you seen this?
I have the atrix 4g, I have a 16GB sd card, I copied some files (like 2GB in mp3) to the sd card, I safely removed the device from my computer, then from the atrix status bar I changed the usb mode to none and it mounted the card just fine, but now when I try to open apps like gallery, music player, files, or even winamp, they will just hang and I have to force close application.
Also, it drying out the battery very quickly, is like is hanging in trying to read the files.
What can I do? I don't want to have to reset the phone.
Any ideas?
Hi, ok I found the process taking all the cpu, is android.process.media, I dont know what is trying to do, how can I tell why is hanging?
I cant stop it either, is it important?
Thanks

I've had this problem twice. I think that the Atrix's software cant handle so much new media at one time. The first time it happened I ended up preforming a factory reset, which fixed everything (Make sure to back up first!) The second time was when I was adding lots of music again, and since I'm doing this constantly, I ended up unlocking and flashing to CM7.
hmmm yes this ain't my first time with this problem either and i had to reset as well. but that's too much work, i have a mod for the lapdock and having to reinstall is a real pain. but anyway I've manage to kill the media process with the kill -9 command using the terminal emulator as root and t this released everything else, gallery and music are working fine. i still don't know what will affect if i don't let the process start again, i might look for an app that would help me prevent it from starting , but if it causes any pain i will try maybe another flash like you said .
thanks
ok, I might have found another solution, may be too prompt but wanted to share.
I kept searching on google and found more options, since killing the media process wasnt very useful, eventually it would start again and hang everything. Basically, go to Settings, Applications, manage applications, all, tab on media storage and then Clear Data, go back tab media share and clear data, then reboot the phone.
After reboot the media process will start again and will scan all drives, I can see it taking something between 20 and 40%, the common at 25%, is way below the 60% that it was using before, so I gave it a second chance and let it running for a while.
Indeed, after some minutes it finished the rescan and cpu went back to 0% on the media process and I was able to open gallery, music, etc.
So, I kept all my files in the sd card, didnt have to factiry reset and the media process went back to normal.
Hope this is permanent, and hope it works to anyone else with the same.
cheers

Virus On My Samsung S5 Has Practically Completely Erased My SD Card. Now What?

Hi everyone!
So the inevitable has happened- a viruses infected my phone that my boyfriend soley uses. I knew viruses existed on Android but I didn't know to what extent.
The phone is a Samsung S5. It is NOT rooted.
My boyfriend was watching 'adult' videos and he has his phone set so you can hold your finger over the screen and not actually touch it to select things (IMO i think that feature is stupid! ). Anyway, While watching a video his finger hovered over one of the banner/block videos that are along the side of the actual video you are watching for too long he guessing and inadvertently selected something. He doesn't recall actually seeing anything download though.
Unfortunately because he likes to download some programs that require you to select in your settings to allow downloads from untrusted sources, he just always leaves that option selected. (Not smart).
He took screen shots of what happened next. I've included the screenshots he took in this post.
At this point his phone was frozen on the screens that popped up. He tried turning it off and on again but once back on the screens were still there and were stopping stopping him from doing anything on his phone. He didn't know what was going on and called me at work. Immediately I knew he had infected his phone, a similar type of virus was huge a few years for computers.
I didn't really know what to do so I suggested doing a factory reset. I figured he must have inadvertently downloaded something, and factory reset would get rid of everything.
When I came home from work he told me he did the factory reset like I said and the pop up screens that were preventing use of the phone were gone but he still thought he had a virus because his contacts were all messed up, they were very old and none of his newer contacts exsited (Im not sure where he got the backed up contacts that he did manage to get back...although they are mostly useless.). As well there are a lot of things missing, over 2000 pictures on the SD card have disappeared along with movies, documents, music etc... Almost 32gb of stuff!
I plugged the SD card into my computer thinking maybe his phone just wasn't reading it properly because the phone did show the SD card and you could view what was on it, but almost everything was missing.
All of the photos/videos were backed to his Google photos and they are all gone! The only thing there now is what is left still on his SD card. Checked Google photos trash and it says nothing was deleted.
His SD card is 32gb and use to be almost full, but now it has 27gb free!!!! Where did almost 27gb of data go!!?? And the approx 5gb of data left is just random stuff that I highly doubt would use up even close to 5gb...
(I just learned while typing this, that he was able to get most of his pictures back from Facebook, so nothing was removed from Facebooks backup)
I researched this for hours and I'm pretty sure this is a type of malicious Ransomeware Virus.
I think the virus is gone due to factory reset... Could I be wrong?
As for the missing stuff, my guess is either the missing data has actually been removed by the virus OR its still on the SD card but encrypted by the virus. (Which means it'd also be compacted?)
If it's still there but encrypted how can I find the encrypted files and unencrypted them.
Thanks for reading! Hopefully one of you will have an answer.
Cheers, Rebecca
This looks like the standard ransomware. I would look to see if there is one out there for android. I'm not sure there is a true version. What I mean by this is it locks out your bootloader. Can't be done on stock Samsung. So I think it is gone.
Now when you say he did a factory reset are you sure he didn't wipe the card by mistake?
The contacts sync with Google and what most likely happened is that have been saving to phone memory and not to the Gmail account. Which he most likely signed into after the factory reset.
As for the back up there should not have had anything that could remove them from Google pics.

data recovery after factory reset.

So I have a s9+ snapdragon running the latest Android 9 pie. My files got wiped out after a factory reset and I wanted to get some closure. Can I get those files back? It was not backed up on Google or Samsung cloud. Nor was it on a sd card. It was in the internal phone storage.
I hear you can recover the data so long as you don't overwrite the data. Files aren't really lost and still technically in your phone. These are pics and video actually. It's all I care about. I hear people saying you have to root phone and do a deep scan of the phone to try to recover the data but I hear you can't root cause it doesn't work on my version of s9+. (Snapdragon and android 9) I also heard you gotta take it to forensics data recovery. I called them but they said nope files are gone. But I read on Google recoverable.
Please anyone, help me. I've been down since I lost my pics and video. I took vids and pics back to my homeland where I haven't been back in 10 years.
PS. I was on vacation when this happened. My company unfortunately has access to my phone and if you miss type your password a certain amount of times it triggers the factory reset and wipes it out. I decided to stop a certain amount of times and then my 20 month old son started pushing buttons and there you have it. Factory reset.
files are lost bud. Sorry
did you ever connect your phone to any cloud for backup purposes?
It's connected but I didn't back up photos or vids. Everything else I did. Is there a way to root this version of phone I have? Temp root at least without tripping Knox?

mostly correct. It wipes the table of contents of storage, but doesnt actually wipe(remove) anything. The issue is that it starts writing 1's and 0's wherever it wants to because as far as it knows, the internal storage is empty (which it isnt). It then starts unintentionally corrupting file after file as it writes system data and everything else it writes. Can he recover the data? Maybe. Is it likely? Not even remotely. The only way to recover it is to turn it off, like now and get it connected to a lunix instance, adb into it and see whats still there. Which is likely nothing usable.
Completely unrelated side note: Youre from Sibiu? I visited there about 2 years ago. Positively GORGEOUS place!! We saw the sun set over cobblestone right between two rows of buildings. It was surreal!

yes there is a way to root it, and thats probably your only hope. Turn the phone off, read up on the new-ish root methods, apply them to your phone and see what you can get via ADB. Dont hold your breath, but that is the only way to get there. Treat it like a recently wiped hard drive, because thats technically what it is. Its the "C: drive" of your phone essentially

Can you please teach me step by step how to do that or point me to a link. Cause thats what i read about how its not really gone. Has to have data over write the existing that was supposedly deleted. Did you mean Linux or lunix?

if i typed lunix, then i meant Linux, and if i typed Linux, i meant Linux. Either way, i meant Linux. So, step by step... eesh thats gonna be a lot. First thing is to turn your phone off if you havent already. Itll keep writing stuff to the internal storage even if it doesnt say its doing so. Thats jsut what it does and it doesnt know that you dont want it to do that while its powered on. If youre able to do so, you can just turn on USB debugging in developer options and connect it to your computer without rooting it but granting permissions for your computer to access the drive. All of this requires having your phone powered on. The most dangerous thing ive told you to do is turn on usb debugging since it will write to the internal storage that you now have access to dev options, and then usb debugging. When the phone is powered on, try to keep it on airplane mode to avoid giving it reasons to actually do stuff. Linux isnt really necessary either as most software recovery tools will recognize the device and storage just fine, but the likelihood of it being able to actually recover anything is slim. If that doesnt get you full access to the internal storage, then youll have to either root or use linux or both. Its been a while since ive attempted this, so forgive me if my steps are off. That being said, these are the progressive steps one would need to take in order to do what youre trying to do.
does it wipe the phone though? Or does the phone allocate the areas where data is as free? If it only installs system and sets the previously used memory as "available or free". it can be recovered
Edit : if your phone was encrypted it wouldn't matter. Did your phone use secure start-up? (required a pin or password etc) then it would show adblock opening.

my company triggered the factory reset after failed attempts of putting password in. see it uses a thing called airwartch or vmware not sure what its called but yea..still hoping to recover vids and pics if i can root my phone and just do a deep scan just not sure how. esp for my version phone of s9+ snapdragon android pie. i have not taken pics or vids. just twitter, fb, email. some internet browsing. but not sure if those overwrite new data as well.

You can try an app called disk digger. It's your best bet. About the best on the market. If you root. Or reinstall the firmware in Odin. Kiss em good bye
The way this works is front to back. A file is normally written from front to back. Once it gets the end. It starts over. Then there goes old deleted files
Files are not deleted until over written. But actually marked for deletion. Not gone till next write cycle
If it can't then their gone. But every day you use your device the chance gets slimmer. Just cause your not downloading stuff. Cache and sick files are over writing.

Probably not.
Which link can you guys point me to to root? I have s9+ snapdragon. What are all my choices? Thank you.
I think I found one but link is broken. Syndicate. I really need this so I can at least do a deep scan of my phone. I need root!
You're right that it's possible to recover the data as long as it hasn't been overwritten. However, it can be difficult to do so without rooting your phone and doing a deep scan, as you mentioned. Unfortunately, it sounds like you can't root your phone due to its version.
You might want to consider reaching out to managed IT services that specialize in data recovery. They might have more advanced techniques and tools to recover your data. It's worth a shot since the pictures and videos mean a lot to you.
Good luck, and I hope you're able to recover your memories!
